Video: Hillary’s less-than-enthusiastic endorsement on KSM trial; Update: Paterson disavows decision

posted at 2:00 pm on November 16, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Give Hillary Clinton credit for attempting to be a team player on Meet the Press yesterday, but it doesn’t appear that her heart was in this effort. When David Gregory asks her whether she agreed that Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four other plotters of the 9/11 attacks should get tried in New York City’s federal court, the best she can offer is that she’ll back whatever Eric Holder and his prosecutors decide on the question. Hillary tells Gregory that she won’t “second-guess” that decision, which sounds like she’s at least a little skeptical:

But does that make Hillary “un-American”?

Update: Did Obama even bother to consult with New York’s governor? According to JWF and the New York Daily News, it appears not:

Gov. Paterson on Monday joined the chorus of critics questioning the government’s plan to try Kalid Shaikh Mohammed and four other accused 9/11 terrorists in New York.

“This is not a decision that I would have made,” the governor said when asked about the upcoming federal trial of KSM and his four underlings.

“Our country was attacked on its own soil on Sept. 11, 2001, and New York was very much the epicenter of that attack,” Paterson said after an appearance at a groundbreaking ceremony for a new CUNY campus in East Harlem.

“Over 2,700 lives were lost,” he went on. “It’s very painful; we’re still having trouble getting over it. We still haven’t been able to rebuild that site, and having those terrorists tried so close to the attack is going to be an encumbrance on all of New Yorkers.”

How long before Moran starts calling Paterson “un-American”?

Obama consulted with Mayor Bloomberg, though. Funny how this decision was announced after the NYC election and while Obama was in Asia.

Carter: 444 days, couldn’t get’em home

Reagan: 4 minutes, all safe and sound outside Iranian airspace.

Yeah…I’ll take goofy every gawd dam day.

BobMbx on November 16, 2009 at 2:53 PM

Everyone is saying that it wasn’t Obama’s decision. I guess he doesn’t quite understand that being Chief Executive means the buck stops there.

Even if Obama asked Holder to study the question and devise a plan for it, he picked Holder instead of Gates, thereby insuring a DOJ solution instead of a DoD one.

hawksruleva on November 16, 2009 at 2:53 PM

The KSM decision is, when you consider it carefully, a defining moment for Osama Obama’s administration.
MrScribbler on November 16, 2009 at 2:07 PM

Yeah, he’s rolled all the dice on this one. He’s betting there won’t be another terrorist attack in NYC while this circus proceeds. OTOH, I imagine bin Laden et al will not want to disrupt the proceedings because of what they might learn. That doesn’t mean one of the sleeper loose cannons won’t give it a go.
How abou this,..? We have a Beslan type hostage situation somewhee else with schoolchildren held hostage as a lever to force release of KSM.

Complained about military officers wearing, of all things, their uniforms when speaking to the Clenis.

Instructed Clenis to not return salutes from soldiers; afraid it would show him as a hawk, instead of the walking vagina she wanted him to be.

Comfortable? One word clarifies: Mogadishu

Oh yeah…the military is real comfortable with the Clintons in office.

BobMbx on November 16, 2009 at 2:59 PM

The position of SecState trumps a senator every time. Hillary’s weak ‘endorsement’ says as much as if she came out opposed to the idea of a public trial.

Gov. Paterson here in NY isn’t much loved but the man is right. He has nothing to lose by speaking truth to power without mincing words. Hillary, on the other hand, has everything to lose.

Seems Obowma’s luster is tarnishing among his own Party and he’s not in office yet a full year.

Happy Monday, friends!

Is this similar to the tactics used on John Kyl a few months back? Kyl criticized something, stimulus or some other nonsense and the administration retorted with a “Nice state you got there Kyl, how about we take back that stimulus money?”

Now, Paterson gives Obama the bird, and then, Obama and Holder decide to have the most heinous war crimes tried there in his state, in that city, after Paterson told Obama to get bent.

I see Paterson becoming a conservative here really soon. He may not see it, but the rest of us will. //s

ted c on November 16, 2009 at 3:09 PM

Obama already told Paterson to step aside.

This Obama Administration is hell bent on defying the rule of law, contractual law, the Constitution and its logical application.

Obama means to have all acts of terrorism performed by Muslims against Americans forgiven, legally wiped clean. He personally set the stage by defining Jihad so far as the Chief Executive and Commander in Chief is concerned. Obama is using every means possible to pervert the trial of the 9/11 terrorists from start to finish.

EVEN MCVEIGH WAS TRIED OUTSIDE OF OKLAHOMA!

But Obama insists on trying the 9/11 terrorists inside NYC (simply one example of so many determinations being played out by Holder) so that the trial and EVERYTHING associated therein is dismissed on appeal, never able to be used again in a court of law.

Sorry, but you make it too easy.

Del Dolemonte on November 16, 2009 at 3:13 PM

Given the impotence of the NY “Gov.” Paterson, the Mayor of NYC, Bloomberg himself, should refuse to host the trial(s) in NYC.

At least if the trials are conducted outside of NY, that particular reason to appeal the outcome of the trial is removed.

Amen. Liberty isn’t free.

Giving liberty to a terrorist and to criminals removes liberty from the law abiding citizenry. Obamarx is “spreading the wealth” poverty of hopelessness via empty promises of false hope that lead to disillusionment. Obama would make all slaves to the authoritarian global governance, coercing a dichotomy between the rulers and all others, having proudly destroyed the “middle class” or bourgeoisie, completely eliminating any passage from the bottom to the top.

Hence, “trickle up poverty” as Michael Savage puts it.

maverick muse on November 16, 2009 at 3:29 PM

Hillary, a dyed in the wool leftist, would have been every bit as bad as Obama. She is corrupt as he is, i.e., Whitewater, Travelgate, windfall stockmarket supercash, TOTALLY pro-abort, anti-military, and like Obama, is unqualified and has her brain in the seat of her pantsuit. She is grasping, ambitious, dishonest, lying and I am quite frankly sick of hearing that she would be even a scintilla better than Obama. If she had the chance, she would match or better him in wicked words and deeds.

Upon the terrorists capture years ago, the first thing they DEMANDED was to be taken to NYC and given a lawyer.

Because I love the honor that our military exemplifies, I sadly supported our military when Bush committed them into the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. We knew the ultimate outcome of ANY involvement with Afghanistan and then Iraq (the area of the world ruled by the Koran, the Muslim faith including Sharia Law). But we gave them our all so as to hold the moral ground of sharing democracy, the magic cure-all.

Bush spent American blood, lives and treasure to offer Iraq cake. But Bush FAILED to see through the prosecution of the very terrorists that committed the heinous destruction in the USA that Bush and Congress used as reason to fight wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

How can you “win” anything after 9/11 if you fail to prosecute and convict the 9/11 terrorists?! ESPECIALLY when ultimately you are holding them simply to let them free sooner or later?!

So Iraq eats election cake paid for by the USA. But Bush failed to convict the terrorists he apprehended. So much for bravura. Bush’s failure to try the terrorists in military tribunals proves he’s no real Texan so far as Texans are concerned. A good Texan (Rick Perry or Bob Bullock for that matter–NOT Ronny Earle) would have made certain to take the terrorists through the tribunal process and executed swift justice according to the letter of the law. But a wimpy “compassionate” Ivy League Yankee progressive liberal parading as a conservative wouldn’t and didn’t. SHAME!

Same goes for Cheney.

Obama began his potus campaign A YEAR in advance. That was time enough to hold and complete the military tribunals of these apprehended terrorists before Bush left office.

Bush/Cheney gave the 9/11 terrorists to Obama on a silver platter, carte blanche as to manner of trial and outcome of appeal.

I can only think that Holder believes KSM will plead guilty, as he had already entered a guilty plea in the military court at Gitmo. If he pleads guilty in a criminal trial, the only trial will be over the death sentence, as was the case with Zacarias Moussaoui.

KSM may not want a change of venue either. While he may choose to plead not guilty, I believe he wants to face a jury of New Yorkers just to remind them of how many of their neighbors were killed in his plot.

I’m sorry, but its folks just like AnninCA that are marching this country right off a cliff and into historical obscurity. Someday to be nothing more than a quaint little experiment with feedom. Fatal on November 16, 2009 at 5:05 PM

Gee, I have’nt seen this anywhere else, have you?

Lieutenant Colonel Allen B West (US Army, Ret) Statement on Fort Hood Shooting.

His website

Last Thursday, 13 American Soldiers were killed and another 30 wounded at a horrific mass shooting at US Army installation, Ft Hood Texas. As I watched in horror and then anger I recalled my two years of final service in the Army as a Battalion Commander at Ft Hood.

My wife and two daughters were stunned at the incident having lived on the post in family housing.

A military installation, whether it is Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine, or Coast Guard, is supposed to be a safe sanctuary for our warriors and their families. It is intended to provide a home whereby our “Band of Brothers and Sisters” can find solace and bond beyond just the foxhole but as family units.

A military installation is supposed to be a place where our warriors train for war, to serve and protect our nation.
On Thursday, 5 November 2009 Ft Hood became a part of the battlefield in the war against Islamic totalitarianism and state sponsored terrorism.

There may be those who feel threatened by my words and would even recommend they not be uttered. To those individuals I say step aside because now is not the time for cowardice. Our country has become so paralyzed by political correctness that we have allowed a vile and determined enemy to breach what should be the safest place in America, an Army post.

We have become so politically correct that our media is more concerned about the pre-shooting stress on the shooter, Major Nidal Malik Hasan. The misplaced benevolence intending to portray him as a victim is despicable. The fact that there are some who have now created an entire new classification called, “pre-virtual vicarious Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)” is unconscionable.

This is not a “man caused disaster”. It is what it is: an Islamic jihadist attack.

We have seen this before in March 2003 when a SGT Hasan of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) threw hand grenades and opened fire into his Commanding Officer’s tent in Kuwait. We have seen the foiled attempt of Albanian Muslims who sought to attack Ft Dix, NJ. Recently we saw a young convert to Islam named Carlos Bledsoe travel to Yemen, receive terrorist training, and return to gun down two US soldiers at a Little Rock, Arkansas Army recruiting station.

We thwarted another Islamic terrorist plot in North Carolina which had US Marine Corps Base, Quantico as a target.
What have we seen done with all these prevalent trends? Nothing.

What we see are leaders paralyzed and refusing to confront the issue, Islamic terrorist infiltration into America, and possibly further into our Armed Services. Instead we have a multiculturalism and diversity syndrome on steroids.

Major Hasan should have never been transferred to Ft Hood. Moreover, he should have been administratively discharged from the Army. His previous statements, poor evaluation reports, and the fact that the FBI had him under investigation for jihadist website posting should have been sufficient proof.

However, what we have is a typical liberal approach to find a victim, not the 13 and 30 but rather the poor shooter. A shooter who we hear was a great American, who loved the Army and serving his nation, and CAIR stating that his actions had nothing to do with religious belief.

We know that Major Hasan deliberately planned this episode; he did give away his possessions. He stood atop a table in the confined space of the Soldier Readiness Center shouting “Allahu Akhbar,” the same chant as the 9-11 terrorists and those we fight against overseas in the Iraq and Afghanistan theaters of operation.

No one in leadership seems willing to sound the alarm for the American people. Our Congress should suspend further action on the preposterous and unconstitutional healthcare bill and resolve the issue of “protecting the American people”.

The recent incidents in Dearborn Michigan, Boston Massachusetts, Dallas Texas, and Chicago Illinois should bear witness to the fact that we have an Islamic terrorism issue in America. And don’t have CAIR call me and try to issue a vanilla press statement: they are terrorist apologists, not a civil rights organization.

We have Saudi Arabia funding close to 80% of the mosques in the United States, one right here in South Florida, Pompano Beach.. Are we building churches and synagogues in Saudi Arabia? Of course not. Because they aren’t allowed by the Saudi government.

So much for peaceful coexistence.

Saudi Arabia is sponsoring radical Imams who enter into our prisons and convert young men into a virulent ideology….one resulting in four individuals wanting to destroy synagogues in New York with plastic explosives. Thank God the explosives were dummy. They are sponsoring textbooks which present Islamic centric revisionist history in our schools.

We must recognize that there is an urgent need to separate the theo-political radical Islamic ideology out of our American society. We must begin to demand surveillance of suspected Imams and mosques that are spreading hate and preaching the overthrow of our Constitutional Republic……that speech is not protected under First Amendment, it is sedition and if done by an American treason.

I make no apologies for these words, and anyone angered by them, please, go to Ft Hood and look into the eyes of the real victims. The tragedy at Ft Hood Texas did not have to happen. Consider now the feelings of those there and on every military installation in the world. Consider the feelings of the Warriors deployed into combat zones who now are concerned that their loved ones at home are in a combat zone.

Ft Hood suffered an Islamic jihadist attack, stop the denial and realize a simple point.

The reality of your enemy must become your own.

Steadfast and Loyal,

Lieutenant Colonel Allen B West (US Army, Ret)

Terrye on November 16, 2009 at 5:33 PM

The islamic terrorists won’t need to go after the jurors. They will have the WH do their dirty work for them, by using

SEIU, ACORN, WFP , HCAN, CAIR , ACLU …….
so many choices

I thought Reagan was a bit of a goof.
Never liked his politics.
Never will.

*rolling eyes*
I’m done with all these stories about what someone said at some academic gathering.
I saw an article about how McCain quoted Mao, too. LOL*
Good grief. Great people are often quoted, regardless of their politics.
AnninCA on October 19, 2009 at 2:58 PM

So ann hated Reagan but thinks mao was a great person….does anything else need to be said for or about this horrid creature?

As for Paterson, he’s as irrelevant to this story as anyone else. Once KSM is granted constitutional protections, he must be freed as he was denied due process. To think obama doesn’t know this is just naive.

Didn’t Sheikh Hussain of the WH release the USS Cole killers ?

macncheez on November 16, 2009 at 5:49 PM

Somebody has to have some kind of clip with Hillary saying the exact opposite of what she is saying here.

csdeven on November 16, 2009 at 7:24 PM

That’s not the partner in the Rose Law Firm that I knew.

What do we call “Commies In Name Only”?

Political animals too afraid jeopardize their own comfy nests and willing to sacrifice the Proletariat and the forward march of Socialism.

Disgraceful.

LOL

The fringe Dems will back Obama and Holder on their political play, some aren’t even hiding that its all politics (See Fix News Sunday)

Dems who want to have a job after 2010 and then 2012 are going to run from this or try and act like they aren’t sure. Its something only the far left supports and Obama is caving quickly.

I still think if one juror, judge, cop or prosecutor gets killed by a terrorist attack targeted from this trial Obama should be held for it, everyone warned him, but of course he knows better than everyone.

Did he? Then this decision would make a pattern, wouldn’t it.

Funny how the smartest person in the world, the best attorney in the world, suddenly doesn’t have a legal opinion…
