Obamateurism of the Day
posted at 8:05 am on November 16, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
A while before people began debating Barack Obama’s obsequious bow to Emperor Akihito, he had created a controversy over the lack of respect demonstrated during a Memorial Day ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington. Lucianne.com had it on her site last week, and a number of Hot Air readers sent it to me over the weekend:

Presidents do not normally salute except to return a salute, because they do not wear a military uniform. However, they do usually put their hands over their hearts instead, as one can see the other civilian on the dais doing. President Obama appears not to know what to do, which is yet another indication that Obama needs a better protocol office.
Update: Reader Paul A forwards this from FactCheck, which says that the reason Obama was not saluting was because the others on the dais were saluting him while the band played “Hail to the Chief.” Be sure to read it all; it does appear debunked.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.
Illustrations by Chris Muir of Day by Day. Be sure to read the adventures of Sam, Zed, Damon, and Jan every day!

These actions are clearly intentional. And, they do not pass by unnoticed by Americans. And, sadly, they do not pass by unnoticed by our enemies either.
Impeach. Now.

This is at least the second time around for the bow and the crotch salute.

What are the chances that the people in the protocol office are Chicago hacks who have some connection to Daley? Now, if it were the state flag of Illinois or some Chicago banner or such, then Obama would be doing hand stands.

Why would a POTUS need a protocol office to know that you put your hand over your heart when the national anthem is playing? You’d think he wasn’t raised as an American. Oh wait.

What a pile of sh*t this man is.
angryed on November 16, 2009 at 8:16 AM
I don’t think this is a result of clueless behavior. After being in the Illinois state legislature and the US Congress he could not help but know flag etiquette by now.
This is on purpose. I’m just not sure what the exact message is supposed to be, and to whom it is being sent. It is, though, ominous.
Yoop on November 16, 2009 at 8:17 AM
Zero is above everything. He’s making up new rules as he goes along. Bowing to other foreign leaders and not putting his hand over his heart. At least he should be standing at attention.

kingsjester on November 16, 2009 at 8:18 AM

cmsinaz on November 16, 2009 at 8:18 AM
Putting his hand over his heart would indicate a love of country. As Dr. Krauthammer and the Powerline guys have noted, Obama has a deep hatred of the racist, imperialist, capitalist US. It does not deserve to be powerful or successful. (And his policies are designed to change that power and success.)
His entire upbringing, from his lefty parents, grandparents, and education soaked him in anti-Americanism. The only saving grace, as his wife commented, of this country is that it elected Obama, making her proud for the first time.
A man who listened to Revrund Wright’s “G*ddam Amerikkka” for two decades cannot put his hand over his heart in affection and loyalty.
It’s intentional.

kingsjester on November 16, 2009 at 8:27 AM
Patriotic Americans have no use for a protocol office except when they visit other countries. There is no need for a “protocol office” when you are attending a truly American ceremony. There is a need for training and timing, but not a show of patriotism. That is, the assumption is that you arrive with some degree of patriotism, respect and awareness of the state of the fallen. It is clear from the photograph that the training, timing, patriotism, respect, and awareness may not be “in order” on the dais.
ted c on November 16, 2009 at 8:27 AM
You think anyone had to “instruct” George W. Bush on how to show respect for the country and office?

Obama’s “handlers” are on the precise page of music both they and Obama appear to want to be on. Thus, Obama’s “handlers” are being quite effective.

This is a Military thing, Obama hates the Military, thus the intentional show of disrespect, nothing more, nothing less…
doriangrey on November 16, 2009 at 8:31 AM
Isn’t there a non partisan protocol office for the president, one that has continuity from administration to administration to help ensure that the new guy knows what to do?
“During this ceremony, Mr. President, when the national anthem is playing, put your right hand over your heart. Next week when we travel to country X that has a king/emperor all you do is shake hands; remember that Americans do not bow.”
He has to have been told how to act and when. Either The Whine thinks He knows better than professional protocol officers and does what He wants, or else He is deliberately snubbing.

More importantly, there isn’t a point in any ceremony I can think of when the POTUS shouldn’t be saluting or rendering honors in some way- Unless of course the filthy lying coward thinks that Veteran’s Day is all about him because he intended to go into the military at one point and since he would obviously come out a war hero, the ceremony was all about him.

blatantblue on November 16, 2009 at 8:34 AM
Giving the benefit of the doubt to Obama, I still think it is worse than a weak protocol office. He never really thought about gratitude or pride or patriotism until the last year and a half. He is childlike, unaware of the sacrifice of others and not appreciative. I pray he is not resentful and that he is simply, totally unprepared to function as commander in chief. A lack of humility in the face of this event may simply be a lack of maturity and that’s the best case scenario.
clorensen on November 16, 2009 at 8:35 AM
Wrong DG, this is an American thing. The filthy lying coward does not know what it means to be an American and he hates those of us who stand up for America instead of ascribing to his universal government mindset. Shorthand- Obama hates America.

highhopes on November 16, 2009 at 8:40 AM
When I first saw this photo, it reminded me of the other time he was caught doing this, at some campaign rally with Hillary and others–who clearly knew what to do. When the first photo of “no hand on heart” came out, he gave some lame, professorial excuse that his grandfather had taught him to put his hand over his heart for the Pledge of Allegiance and to “sing” for the National Anthem.
As always, he’s never wrong, it’s always someone else’s fault. He’s teaching his daughters the same lesson–she got a poor grade on a test because the study guide didn’t match up with the test. When will our long national nightmare be over?

I don’t know what Gen McChrystal thinks about all this dithering but, IMO, there should come a point when he offers up his retirement letter as a show of no confidence in the dithering coward that is more interested in worldwide apology tours than the fact that American troops are getting killed while he is out there on the party circuit like some sort of Eurotrash playboy.

Sadly, the people here at HotAir (especially Ed and Allah) give Obama too much credit. As horrible as it is to think and/or say it, all of the stuff that Obama has done can only lead us to one conclusion and that is that Obama hates this country and he’s destroying it on purpose.
Rush says he hates saying it, but he can’t just ignore what’s going on.It should be the same with everyone. That’s why this country is pretty much on life support right now. People are afraid to question the motives of authorities and leaders, when it’s those people that need to be questioned the most. I know we don’t want to “be like” the libs when Bush was in office, but that doesn’t mean we can’t connect the dots and tell the truth.
This president has been slapped on the wrist and treated like he’s just an infant and doesn’t know what he’s doing because he’s black and we don’t want to be labeled a racist. Look how Obama ran his campaign… he knows exactly what he’s doing.

This is part and parcel with the flag pin flap from the campaign- he doesn\’t like the flag, and is not patriotic, but doesn\’t want to get caught out and lose face, so he comes up with some lame spin that appeases folks for the moment and then goes back to business as usual. It works because no one wants to even entertain the idea that this guy really is what he seems- so unamerican that he doesn\’t like the flag, apple pie or mother. But the really interesting thing about this thread is the main argument about Obama is thus: Is he doing it all on purpose or is he an empty suit? Either way it is terrifying to think about.
