Bayh’s red-state survival technique: I’m not with these guys!

posted at 2:30 pm on November 16, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

The problems for Harry Reid and Barack Obama in getting the Senate to go along with big-spending, big-government agenda items do not come from Senate Republicans, but from their fellow Democrats in otherwise red states.  Usually, the media focuses on Blanche Lincoln, Ben Nelson, and even common-sense liberal Joe Lieberman as examples of Democrats bucking Reid and Obama in the upper chamber.  Indiana’s Evan Bayh sent out a message to his constituents today, hinting that he may take more leadership in Democratic dissent on Obama’s expansive and expensive agenda.  HA reader Greg D forwards Bayh’s attempt to distance himself in preparation for his re-election bid in 2010:

Getting out of the red

Usually, politicians use their email newsletters to tout the benefits of government programs they voted to create, fund or continue. Today, I am emailing to tell you about the overstuffed appropriations bills I’ve voted against in 2009, because we can’t afford business as usual during this economic recession.

As you will see from the chart below, I have voted against thousands of earmark spending projects this year, including projects to study Monk Seals, combat Mormon crickets, renovate the Hoover building and recover oysters from Chesapeake Bay.

Indiana deserves to have an independent voice in the nation’s capital who will stand up for what’s right. I was one of only three members of my party to vote against the omnibus spending bill because it raised spending at three times the rate of inflation. I was one of only two to vote against the federal budget, because I believe it’s irresponsible for America to keep spending money we do not have.

Before the year is out, Congress will vote to raise the federal debt ceiling again, authorizing Washington to borrow even more than the record $12 trillion we already owe. I won’t do it…not unless Congress commits to a strict new, non-political process to start getting our country’s fiscal house in order.

Enough is enough.

Each citizen’s share of the debt now exceeds $38,000. When our deficits grow, we are forced to spend more and more taxpayer money on interest payments. That money would be better spent on health care for our citizens, education for our kids and tax relief for middle-class families.

We can’t keep charging to the national credit card. Washington needs a credible plan to pay its bills. Last week, I stood up in the Senate and told my colleagues so.

It seems as though Bayh has figured out that the Obama agenda is not very popular, and that Harry Reid seriously miscalculated whatever mandate voters gave Democrats in 2008.  Suddenly, the man who was on Barack Obama’s short list for running mate has disavowed Obama’s big-spending ways.  Bayh now wants everyone to know how independent he is, especially on appropriations and spending.

But is Bayh actually saying anything of value?  Symbolically, breaking with the party means something, but notice what Bayh’s not saying in this message.  He’s not telling Indiana voters that he will block the very expensive and liberty-encroaching ObamaCare proposal, which Reid will shortly propose.  Bayh also fails to mention anything about blocking the Kerry-Boxer cap-and-trade bill, which will kill Indiana’s coal economy and manufacturing sector.

Cutting spending on Chesapeake oysters is easy.  Telling Indiana voters that Bayh will protect their economy by killing cap-and-trade, and protecting American freedom and the private sector by stopping ObamaCare might go a long way toward establishing real credibility as an independent voice.  But the fact that Bayh has to distance himself from Reid and Obama tells us just how badly the Democrats have botched things in 2009.

I think that this is Bayh’s version of “These aren’t the droids you’re looking for.”

teke184 on November 16, 2009 at 2:32 PM

Yep, I got that email today too. I’ve heard Bayh say that he’s against Cap and Trade because it would cost Indiana jobs.

I believe this is Bayh’s way to separate himself from the party without cutting ties altogether.

Oink on November 16, 2009 at 2:34 PM

C’mon Ed – You realize that Obama’s talking points have been specifically that the Health Care Bill will CUT costs.

Even Pelosi was saying that and backing up her assertions with the COB numbers… THEN snuck the 300 BILLON kick back amendment in AFTER the COB’s numbers.

Even Reid is saying this.

Last week, I stood up in the Senate and told my colleagues so.

Last week, just as Obama was leaking that maybe he’d put the deficit on his to-do list sometime next year. Maybe it’s just part of the the new Dem strategy to say “Look at this terrible deficit we inherited, some one needs to put a stop to this. Soon. Sometime. Whatever.”

Beware the Democrats!

Um, Senator, irresponsible, unconstitutional, wild-eyed socialist spending is NEVER good for the economy… but dince you’re a Dem (after Nov 2, 2010)… you’ll soon be making the case that massive spending and taking over more parts of the economy makes GOOD business sense.

He’s voting against “thousands” of penny-ante throwaway bills.

…While he’s voting FOR a small handful of multi-trillion dollar programs calculated to result in large-scale American Socialization program.

I think that falls under the category of: “some of the people some of the time.” That’s not a campaign strategy; that’s a last-ditch desperate dodge.

But as crazy and stupid as it is, it will actually WORK — if the Republicans do what they did last year and help the Democrats convince voters that they’re not the liberal ones.

Bayh is up for election next year. Let’s hope he will vote against cloture for both bills. I ain’t holdin’ my breath.

I’m more worried about how Dick Lugar will vote on them. He’s supposed to be a conservative, but he doesn’t act like one very often. He just go re-elected, too, so he isn’t going to worry about what his constituents think. Not that he ever has.

Any chance of picking this seat up in 2010? Or will this be another missed opportunity for the NRSC?

KeepOhioRed on November 16, 2009 at 2:49 PM

Bayh’s red-state survival technique: I’m not with these guys!

It’s a sham. “Conservative” Democrats will read the tea leaves and know that they’re gonna get killed next fall and decide, “What the hey, let’s shove our biggest, most leftist wet dream of legislation through.” My guess is that the party won’t mind losing a few seats in the short run in exchange for permanently altering the relationship between the government in this country and the governed.

What are they going to do, send divers down to rescue the oysters that fell overboard?

In a single day no less.

I’m sure there’s term for this behavior in DSM-IV.

mr.blacksheep on November 16, 2009 at 3:23 PM

I was one of 20 or so who visited Bayh’s downtown Indianapolis office the same day that others were rallying with Michele Bachman in DC.

Bayh’s representative ushered us into a large conference room and listened to us as we spoke against the health care abomination and Cap ‘n Trade.

The spokesman assured us he was against Cap ‘n Trade.

The spokesman also assured us he was against the health care change as long as it included a government option.

The responses more or less assured us of a reasonable position and at least 3 time I pushed back and explained that we were against any and all involvement of a central government take over of any portion of the health care economy.

This may be the first time in his career that he’ll have realistic opposition in his 2010 bid for reelection. There are two GOP candidates about to do battle for the nomination. One of these is the local leader of the TEA Party movement and has a sizable following already.

Bayh is savvy enough to know he cannot take the state for granted as he has in the past.

Onager on November 16, 2009 at 3:24 PM

Bayh is a Democratic Senator, genius, which is the point of the post. No one’s asking you to comment at all, either.

I concur, Ed. It would be the gentlemanly thing to do. She truly wants to leave but just can’t bring herself to take the first step. Give her a friendly, gentle push out the door and then lock it behind her. She’ll be forever grateful as will we.

Rod on November 16, 2009 at 3:36 PM

I think that this is Bayh’s version of “These aren’t the droids you’re looking for.”

I went with Army of Darkness:

Ash: Whoa! Whoa! Wait a minute. Hold it. W-wait a minute. Y-you gotta understand, man. I-I never even saw these assholes before. Henry you gotta tell ‘em you don’t know me. We never met. Tell him.

I think it’s his version of “out, out, damned spot!”

He’s trying to get the blood off his hands from his Porkulus vote. Sorry, that stain doesn’t come out so easily.

UltimateBob on November 16, 2009 at 3:49 PM

I won’t do it…not unless Congress commits to a strict new, non-political process to start getting our country’s fiscal house in order.

Like a junky commits to giving up crack.

Ed I know many are asking for you to ban AnninCA, and yes she is a troll, but she is damn funny in her niave unicorns and rainbow worldview, and she does show us they way some people actually think (shudder). I would hate for HA to devolve into a group think LGF kinda place.
Being whiney or stupid deserves ridicule, while consistently going against the directives of the moderator (Klingon jokes, attacking the boss lady, and such) deserves a ban.

LincolntheHun on November 16, 2009 at 3:55 PM

I didn’t trust this snake when he was governor and I don’t trust him now. He will turn on Hoosiers and bite us and then tell us that we demanded he do it. He’s counting on his pretty face and faux-conservative rhetoric to carry him to the presidency.

SKYFOX on November 16, 2009 at 3:56 PM

And while your at it Ann, don’t forget to wipe your Obama.
milwife88 on November 16, 2009 at 2:51 PM

Yeeech. You have insulted turd cutters everywhere.

Barack Hasan Obama is self-wiping.

Ed, please ban LincolntheHun too because he’s …. he’s … not like the rest of us group-think zombies. Oh, and because he thinks Ann is funny.

Just kidding, you ol’ softy.

BTW, I thought Huns were made of stronger stuff. Atilla’s not going to be too happy when he finds out you’re against impaling Ann on the ban spear.

An Indianapolis Tea Party organizers is running.
http://politicalhairlips.com/indiana/indiana-senate-candidate-richard-behney-running-for-2010/
He’s a small business owner (Attaboy Plumbing), but I don’t know much about him

We know quite a bit about him. Richard Behney is the real deal-a true patriot and small businessman who stood up and said “ENOUGH.” He has been speaking at townhalls all over Indiana to excellent reviews. Since Bayh and Lugar just take turns playing Conservative depending on who is up for re-election…Hoosiers are ready to say Buh-Bye to Bayh and Hello to Behney!Check out http://www.richardbehney.com

indypat on November 16, 2009 at 4:21 PM

Bayh is a liberal douchebag who bluffs his way around Indiana with faux-conservative blather and name recognition. Hoosiers are famously stupid and I have no doubt that hundreds of thousands pull the lever for Bayh with absolutely no idea how he votes on anything.

If he had a strong rival who was willing to show the Hollywood buttsniffing he has enabled, he would go away.
