Poll: What was the Obamateurism of the Week?
posted at 10:00 am on November 15, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
It’s time once again to choose the Obamateurism of the Week — and this week, our friend Chris Muir should take a bow for his new OOTD graphics! One has to wonder who Obama will blame for these follies, especially since he doesn’t seem too shy about airing poor performances in the family. Of course, Obama still could confuse this award with another, or simply not show up at all. Americans might be in the mood to make a trade already, but they’ll have to wait for 2012.
Previous “winners”:
- Giving 2 minutes of “shout-outs” before getting to the Fort Hood shooting
- Accusing Cheney not focusing on Af-Pak just before heading out to 3 fundraisers and a golf outing
- WH retreats on Fox News war when other broadcasters object
- Obama declares war — on liberal bloggers and Fox News
- US was on “path to recovery” before durable goods orders fell, mass layoffs rose
- Obama goes to Copenhagen (and comes home empty)
- Taxes, definitions, auto insurance, and Merriam-Webster dictionaries
- Throwing Poland under the bus on missile defense on 70th anniversary of Soviet invasion
- Obama warns of “partisan scare tactics,” warns “people will die” if ObamaCare stalls
- Obama doesn’t check to see if schools in session for his national speech
- Getting all wee-wee’d up
- The “public option” is just like the Post Office!
- We’re going to listen to other people’s ideas, except that people who disagree should shut up
- Snitch Central for ObamaCare dissenters
- Rushing legislation bad in 2004, essential in 2009
- Obama opines on Gates arrest without “having all the facts”
- Obama salutes the Ghana flag
- Obama jokes about Alaska sale with Russians
- Obama uses union and DNC plants at health-care town hall
- Obama plants a question on Iran with HuffPo
- Change in Iran coming because “Obviously, after the speech I made in Cairo…”
- Flashing his soles to the camera while talking to Netanyahu
- “If you actually took the number of Muslim Americans, we’d be one of the largest Muslim countries in the world.”
- “We can no longer afford to spend as if deficits do not matter and waste is not our problem.”
- Siccing Tim Geithner and Charlie Rangel on tax cheats
- Phony Churchill quote on torture throws Grandpa under the bus
- Torture probe flip-flop
- Obama covers up IHS while quoting Jesus
- Austrian is a language?
- Obama bows to the Saudi king
- 1908 Model T got better gas mileage than today’s SUVs

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Can we start calling Obama “Lil’ Bow Wow.”

Back to tough decisions. I have to go with our troop every time.

Ed, these are getting tougher. So many choices…. so many choices…..

Key West Reader on November 15, 2009 at 10:05 AM
Ed, you should have the Obamas reversed so that it really shows what he is doing. Kissing *ss.

Cindy, I agree. It’s starts with the troops. God bless them.

Is it me or are these getting harder to choose every week?

No question: Bow to your sensei!
The Joker is not incompetent. Everything he does is designed to chip away at our morale and destroy what is great about the USA. On that front, this is one of the most wildly successful administrations EVAH!

canditaylor68 on November 15, 2009 at 10:08 AM
Decisions, decisions. I’d like to dither, but sometimes you just have to make up your mind. I think the bow was really, truly an amateur moment. The others were just classless and clueless.

Just like last week I’ll ask. This all happened in one week? Sheesh!

Had to be Ft. Hood. GW understood duty. Barry understood Saturday.
Patrick S on November 15, 2009 at 10:10 AM
I almost voted for “Bush goes to Ft. Hood, Obama to Camp David,” but that still makes me so angry that I just couldn’t click it. So, I went with bowing to the emperor. That really was amateurish, rather than blatantly self-centered, political, and disrespectful, like the Fort Hood snub.

Really tough—between his lack of empathy for our troops and bowing, yet again, to a monarch.
Like Cindy and bloggless, I went with the troops. Groveling is becoming second nature for this POS, but his disregard for our troops was a kick in the teeth.

These are getting harder and harder Ed.
In the future I could see having an “Obamateurism of Sun-Wed” and an “Obamateurism of Thurs-Sat.”
29Victor on November 15, 2009 at 10:19 AM
I’m beginning to think we should start ranking the Obamateurisms each week, rather than vote for one. We could rank from most egregious to least egregious, because they are all bad. Somehow they do seem to keep getting worse each week though, don’t they?

Fort Hood. The soldier should have come first…well…for a normal President.
Bishop on November 15, 2009 at 10:20 AM
I can’t pick from among these, because they represent very different things.
The deep bow to the Japanese emperor was not a gaffe; he did this intentionally, and it is all part of his move to bring America down a notch or two in the world. He doesn’t give a fig what the symbolism is to all the rest of the world, because he lives in his own little world and he’s remaking reality to conform to it. Just more of your run-of-the-mill Obama narcissism.
Confusing the Medal of Honor and the Medal of Freedom is inexcusable for a president, but it’s typical of this one. He doesn’t give a d*m* about military honors.
Which brings us to Fort Hood. Just as he doesn’t give a d*m* about military honors, his only concern about the military is that it costs so much and is crimping his ability to remake America into Euro-style statism.
Blaming business owners for not hiring is just the natural extension of his blame everybody but him and/or congress for the economic mess. See narcissism above.
Outing his daughter’s poor performance on a test is another example of how he uses whatever he has to to make his point or get what he wants. See narcissism, a trait that makes effective parenting impossible.
Now the Lieberman one is interesting. Makes me wonder who he’s relying on for his information about Israel.
10 months in and he’s shown himself to be far worse than Jimmy Carter. And the sh*t hasn’t really started to hit the fan yet.

Had to pick Obama not going to visit the wounded troops at Fort Hood. The bowing thing is just plain amateur. Not visiting the troops is criminal.
sandee on November 15, 2009 at 10:22 AM
I’ve always enjoyed how Obama’s apparently both an egotist with no respect for those around him and also an over apologetic wimp who has no pride for his position.
Typhonsentra on November 15, 2009 at 10:22 AM
I voted for the bow, it was a total amateur move.
Going to camp David instead of Ft Hood shows that he does not give a f_ck about our troops, Oboobi’s more worried about officials proving this was a terror attack.
SHARPTOOTH on November 15, 2009 at 10:23 AM
The Bow.
I hope the ghost of MacArthur haunts him every night!
One of the reasons we had to punish the Japanese with the Bomb was to break irrevocably their fanatical devotion to the Emperor, their religion of Shintoism not being unlike jihadi Islam today and Ogabe undoes all this with a single bow.
Unreal.
Obowma will likely throw in an apology for Hiroshima and Nagasaki while he’s at it, too.
Jenfidel on November 15, 2009 at 10:23 AM
Don’t get me wrong, I had great fun on the “Bowing” thread but the president just doesn’t understand the people he is “leading”. How do you not go immediately to your “family” to comfort them in tragic times? No, he has to rest up so he looks good in the photo opportunities to come. Mr. Obama’s new theme song should be Toby Keith’s “What About Me”.
Cindy Munford on November 15, 2009 at 10:24 AM
Somebody needs to tell our dingbat President that you don’t have to bow to anybody in Japan. They ain’t the enemy.
Really Right on November 15, 2009 at 10:25 AM
I chose the Ft. Hood embarrassment because, for me, it included the stupidity of the shout-out.
texabama on November 15, 2009 at 10:26 AM
I don’t know if the bow was any more amatuerish than the others. After the so-called bow last time, he had to have deliberately done it this time. No accident, he’s just a jackass. Almost like a screw-you type of bow to all of his detractors. He personifies “classless.”
I had to vote the troops, but they were all embarassments.
XWing5 on November 15, 2009 at 10:26 AM
I voted for the snub of the Ft. Hood victims, but the bow was also a snub of the American military. Let’s not forget who this is that he bows to. This is the son of Emperor Hirohito, who authorized the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. Our President denigrates himself before Hirohito’s heir. Shameful and disgusting.
Dee2008 on November 15, 2009 at 10:28 AM
It was a toss up for me between not going to Ft. Hood and the bow. We know Obama hates the military, so I guess it shouldn’t be surprising he didn’t go immediately to Ft. Hood. However, it is protocol that the President of the United States not bow, didn’t he learn this lesson the first time? I had to vote for the bow.
behiker on November 15, 2009 at 10:28 AM
Exactly . The other leaders did what normal leaders do . Obama was exceptional.
CWforFreedom on November 15, 2009 at 10:28 AM
His indifference to our troops is so far beyond egregious, I think Obamateurism doesn’t cover it. So, I chose the bow.
Lightswitch on November 15, 2009 at 10:30 AM

We need an OOTDay so we are not forced to overlook all the worthy choices.
DeweyWins on November 15, 2009 at 10:33 AM
I had to go with the troops. Of all the things that Obama has done, none of them rise to this. It was the blanatant shining moment where it is obvious to all of the country that he hates us. This was an epiphany. He removed all doubt. Then he followed up with the trials in NYC. The bowing was and still is the symptom of hating his own country and maybe himself. This is a pathetic excuse for a man.
BetseyRoss on November 15, 2009 at 10:33 AM
Nothing contradictory in this at all. He sees himself as better than the country he represents. He doesn’t apologize for himself, he dissociates himself from America’s “sins” and apologizes for that for which he assumes no personal, individual or ideological responsibility. His comment at the OAS summit was classic – don’t blame him for the Bay or Pigs, he wasn’t even born yet.
ProfessorMiao on November 15, 2009 at 10:34 AM
Don’t mind at all. File it next to LOL.
canditaylor68 on November 15, 2009 at 10:37 AM
I’m not sure Americans, especially red-meat eating Americans realize how deeply the perception of the arrogant American runs outside of your borders. Even with countries that like you, people still don’t like you. That is, they do and they don’t at the same time.
I think Obama bowing to the Japanese emperor is a great and amazing gesture. An overdue one. You can’t imagine how much positive goodwill these small moves will create “on the streets” of many different countries.
The bowing doesn’t make American military or economic power any less. It only reduces the impression that many instinctively have of arrogant Americans who think their sh1t don’t stink and they’re the best. It’s partially an irrational sentiment, but it is real nonetheless, and gestures like this bowing will reduce it.
It costs nothing to be respectful and polite, and can pay big dividends.
AlexB on November 15, 2009 at 10:38 AM

Please tell someone who cares about being “liked,” i.e. a gathering of liberals.
Drained Brain on November 15, 2009 at 10:43 AM
I went with “Blaming Business Owners for Not Hiring,” for two reasons:
1) It shows Obama’s complete ignorance of business; and
2) It shows his belief that the world revolves around him: if business owners are not hiring, he believes, they must be doing it to make him look bad.
My son was stationed at Ft. Hood until recently, so the Ft. Hood Obamateurism was a close second.

An excellent comment on proper bow technique and Barack Obama’s attempt at it:
Foreigners are not expected to bow, as they lack the requisite knowledge of the elaborate etiquette governing this for at least 1000 years.
This BHO bow, because of its degree of declination and the shamefully rounded back, is in Japanese eyes the bow of a crippled toilet attendant to his supreme master.

It’s not respectful; it’s obsequious. I suppose we should ask Obama to shine their shoes, too.
And never, ever ask for “respect” in return, because what you really believe is that they are better than America, and Americans should be servile towards them.

UltimateBob on November 15, 2009 at 11:10 AM
Anyone wonder if he did the bow just to deflect later attack ads showing his bowing to the Saudi king? The argument would then go “well he does this with other foreign leaders too.” In that case, it would not be an amateur move but a calculated one.
I picked the Medal confusion, since he presented the thing HIMSELF a month earlier. Doh! And it was part and parcel of the ‘shout out.’
All the choices are worthy of course.
GnuBreed on November 15, 2009 at 11:11 AM
So, Ed–
What are you planning to do with the weekly winners of this (sadly, all too accurate) contest? At the end of the year, or on Jan. 19, 2010, are you going to compile them all in one mega-post? Do we get to vote for an Obamateurism of the Year? Or do you envision brackets, like the Obamateurism of the first quarter, the second, third and fourth, and then a sort of championship vote to choose the Obamateurism of the Year (with a wild card of Allah’s choice)?
Lurking Vet on November 15, 2009 at 11:13 AM
its a tough choice. early on this stuff seemed funny. the ipod and the dvd’s. Its not funny what he has done to this country. I have a hard time laughing at him anymore.
Although the funniest most cherished moment of his adminstration is when Hillary was asked what her husband thought. I watched that video over and over. Now thats funny!
cubbieblue25 on November 15, 2009 at 11:13 AM
Bowing before the emperor was just THE WON poking a finger in the eye of the American citizen. We can get over that, and eventually give some payback.
Deciding to give a shout out, then run off to Camp David for the weekend, instead of acting like the CinC and visiting the troops at Fort Hood goes far beyond anything else. Those are the people who risk everything to protect all of us, and his sorry a$$ too. They accept that as duty. Obama shirked his duty.
Obama’s actions, in this case, sends many messages and has many ramifications now, and far down the road.

There are many things I miss about George and Laura Bush. While not one of the official duties of a president, their quiet, humble dedication to others in need is such an important message to all of us. In the end, it’s not the hoopla and the bright lights that count, or great wealth or the trappings of power, it’s simple acts of human kindness and love, from one human being to another, that mean the most.

The man obviously could care less about the military, and it has always been obviouse to most people in my unit he doesn’t. The look on his face when he “was forced” to lay a wreath at the tomb of the unknowns was one of a kid being forced to do something against hiw will. Maybe that is how he really felt, or maybe it is just a result of not knowing how to fake the proper emotion for such an event.

Bush goes to Ft. Hood, Obama to Camp David
-
Why not the bow? Because he already bowed to a far worse peer… and because I think this low bend and ring kiss actually helps him (intentionally?) defuse past and future bowing to Muslim leaders.
-
The Fort Hood-isms all (each one of them), show Zero’s total lack of respect and connection to the troops. This hole is no leader of men.
