NFL week 10 open thread
posted at 11:00 am on November 15, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
The Pittsburgh Steelers have the Cincinnati Bengals as their guests this week in their most significant game of the season. Both teams are 6-2, and technically tied for the division lead — but the Bengals own the tiebreaker, having beaten the Steelers earlier in the season. However, the Steelers have improved on both sides of the ball over the last few weeks, and dominated Denver on the road in an impressive 28-10 win. Cincinnati played well against Baltimore to win 17-7, but they have yet to dominate. It will surprise no one that I’m picking the Steelers to win this game at home, taking the division lead and nullifying the Bengals’ tiebreaker advantage. I’ll predict a 28-17 win, with at least one defensive or special-teams TD.
By the way, King Banaian will be at that game, and he didn’t even have the decency to scalp me a ticket! As he well knows, I will be “eating my heart out,” but if he brings me back a Steelers hat, I may forgive him … eventually. And if you missed it in our headlines earlier this week, be sure to read Tim McNulty’s post about why I’m a Steeler fan. And hey, Tim … if you can wangle me a press pass for a game this season, I’ll be in Steel City faster than you can say Jack Lambert, and certainly faster than anyone can say Troy Polamalu.
Last week, I put up another 3-3 record, making me 33-14 on the season but only .500 over the last two weeks. Let’s see if I can’t do better with these picks:
- Detroit at Minnesota — The Vikings come off their bye week, so they may be unprepared — oh, jeez, forget it. The Vikes only lose this game if they get caught in a freak snowstorm at the 35W-94 split. 34-10, Vikes.
- Philadelphia at San Diego — I gave too much credit last week to the Eagles and not enough to the Chargers. I’m picking the Bolts at home, but it should be close. 24-21, Chargers.
- Kansas City at Oakland – The Futility Bowl of the Week. KC barely lost to the Jaguars, and Oakland’s coming off the bye with questions about the head coach’s mental stability. Well, he did agree to work for Al Davis, didn’t he? I’ll pick the Raiders in a mild upset, 17-10, but only because they’re at home for this one.
- New England at Indianapolis – I correctly picked the Colts to win last week, and their defense played better than I expected. The Pats have won three in a row, but against some lousy competition. Peyton Manning is at home, and that will make the difference. Colts stay unbeaten, 21-17.
- Jacksonville at the Jets — Jazz Shaw wants me to stop picking the Giants to win, and this week I don’t have a choice, since they’re on their bye week. So I’ll pick the Jets to win at home instead. The Jaguars have four wins, all but one of them against cellar-dwellers (Houston being the exception), while the Jets have beaten Houston and New England. They’re playing at home, too, and the Jags have only one road win. I’ll call this 27-14 Jets.

BOYCOTT THE NFL.
reliapundit on November 15, 2009 at 11:10 AM
If Minnesota loses today, Favre has promised to reverse the “r” and the “v” in his name, settling all current and future disputes.

Go Vikes. If they win – I might actually finally buy a Vikings sweatshirt.

Me too.

Only game I want to see this weekend: Colts-Pats. The NFL should force my Bucs to watch this game, maybe they’d remember how to win again.

Viking defense could score two touchdowns this week. AP will score twice and Harvin will run one back and score on a 40+ yard pass.
Vikings 38, Lions 6

Not a peep about the Saints? Typical Yankee.
I don’t think so, Bellicheck has had a harder time cheating lately.
And in two weeks… curtains.

Go Men of Steel!
catlady on November 15, 2009 at 11:26 AM
Now you did it. Del Dolemonte is going to get all upset and tell you how the $750,000 in fines that the Pats and Bill got was not for cheating but rather for breaking the rules to gain an unfair advantage.
CWforFreedom on November 15, 2009 at 11:26 AM
Remember the time we got the pleasure of watching the epic beating the Pats laid on the Titans? After a while, I think I was rooting for New England, just to see new records set.

No Cowboys ?? That’s worse than More Cowbell…
The Cowboys thump the Packers because…….that’s just what they always do, Favre or no Favre
Janos Hunyadi on November 15, 2009 at 11:32 AM
It’s hard being a Bolts fan in NorCal. NFL rules dictate we get stuck with 49er and Raider games being televised. Fortunately the Raiders suck and the people (term used loosely) in Oakland can’t afford a ticket to an NFL event. Consequently no sell out equals no televised game from Oakland and that means Bolts TV for us up here…Thanks loads to Al Davis, keep up the great work!
repvoter on November 15, 2009 at 11:33 AM
My Jets should win today, but me thinks Ed’s score prediction is a little high at 24-17…I’ll go with 21-20
JetBoy on November 15, 2009 at 11:41 AM
I live in Cincinnati, but I was born in Tennessee. So, of course, the Steelers are my favorite, and only, team. No other team comes close, even if they lost every game in the season, they would still be the best team. GO STEELERS!!!
I also taught my kids to say, “Boo to the Bengals!” Their grandfather, and Bengals fan, loves that one! lol

The NFL isn’t diverse enough where it counts to have real meaning or value.
BL@KBIRD on November 15, 2009 at 11:49 AM
I’ve been in an NFL pool that’s now neck-and-neck between 6 players. My upset pick of the week is Cinci. And in the Most Awesome Game of the Week, I’m picking the Pats in a nail-biter. It’ll all come down to who has the ball with 2 minutes left in the 4th.
Go Lions! I didn’t pick ‘em (but nobody else did, either), so I can root for an upset.
Nethicus on November 15, 2009 at 11:50 AM
I like this as the NFL game of the week. Like you, I’m tied to a loser, the St. Louis Rams, but will watch the game because I love the New Orleans Saints!
donh525 on November 15, 2009 at 12:01 PM
I’ll take Tulsa over East Carolina, 27-22 in the only marginally decent football game today.
Chris of Rights on November 15, 2009 at 12:04 PM
The ONLY time I don’t root for the Vikes is when they play the Cowboys (hey, get over it, I’m a red-neck, raised a red-neck and will always be a red-neck).
Cowpokes melt the Cheeseheads by 10,
Vikes pillage the Lions by 14.
Waitin for the Boys vs Vikes playoff game.
OkieDoc on November 15, 2009 at 12:06 PM
I’m taking the Patriots over the Colts. Their streak has to end eventually and the Pats are the team to do it.
24-21

smokinjoe on November 15, 2009 at 12:14 PM
They did dominate in that game. I suspect the point was that they have not appeared dominating in general.

joedoe on November 15, 2009 at 12:54 PM
Yawn. Give it a rest.
Fact: The Coach was caught breaking a rule. Not the team members. Call Bill a “cheater” if you want, but don’t insult the team members-especially Teddy Bruschi-by calling them “cheaters”, unless you have proof.
Fact: The NFL will tell you that said incident took place against one team only, in one game only.
Fact: The former Pats employee who claimed to have more evidence of the Pats “cheating” was found by the NFL’s investigation to have absolutely no evidence and no witnesses to prove his claims. He’s back to being a golf teacher in Hawai’i.
Del Dolemonte on November 15, 2009 at 12:54 PM
Nope, Ed’s a hater. He only mentioned the Cowboys last week because it was for the lead in the NFC East. And because he really wanted the birds to beat the boys. Didn’t happen that way and the Boys are on top. Eat your heart out Ed. :-)
conservnut on November 15, 2009 at 1:09 PM
I wonder if the league will allow the Colts to sack Brady. The “nobody’s allow to touch pretty boy Tom” is really getting old. Manning will slice em and dice em. 32-21 Colts.
tommyboy on November 15, 2009 at 1:21 PM
Steelers settle for 3 on the first drive. Sure hated to see that drive run out of gas.
Karmic quesiton- I haven’t gotten my Terrible Towel out in years, because it seems they lose every time. Should I get it out today?
Scott P on November 15, 2009 at 1:22 PM
Aw, crap. I think I just blew it just mentioning it.
Scott P on November 15, 2009 at 1:24 PM
You are so predictable. Seems you need to give your spin a rest. Why 750k in fines? on this subject you are infantile.
CWforFreedom on November 15, 2009 at 1:27 PM
Bengals send your payment to the officials. Good tackle on your special teams./
CWforFreedom on November 15, 2009 at 1:27 PM
Then why was the team fined? Could it be they benefited from their coach giving them the other teams’ plays? As in cheated?
The Pats are forever tarnished as cheaters and deserve to lose every game until their franchise folds…
darclon on November 15, 2009 at 1:28 PM
Fact: The NFL destroyed all of the video evidence during the investigation.
darclon on November 15, 2009 at 1:31 PM
Yes Ed, quit picking the Giants to win. Please. It’s tough enough that they have no defense.
rbj on November 15, 2009 at 1:38 PM
Well at least now he has admitted Bill cheated.
The 12 step program is working.
CWforFreedom on November 15, 2009 at 1:43 PM
Del if you think he only filmed one team I have some land I want to sell you in the liberal utopia of Detroit.
This is not a court of law and I am definitely not buying the NFL’s line . Do you not think they have some investment here? Naivete is cute in children but not adults.
CWforFreedom on November 15, 2009 at 1:45 PM
Go chiefs we got to win.

USC is embarrassing this year. (Hangs head in defeat.)

now all Ed needs is fer ona yinz ta send him some arn city …
mrfixit on November 15, 2009 at 1:50 PM
Translation: “I can’t refute what Del said, so I will call him names”.
Both newspapers in Boston have also refuted the guy’s claims. The Boston Globe found he had a history of serial lying, and the Herald, which originally broke the story, retracted it.
The burden of proof is on those who accused the team of cheating. As I said, so far the only one found to have done anything wrong was the Coach.
Give it a rest.
Del Dolemonte on November 15, 2009 at 2:11 PM
Jets fan?
Del Dolemonte on November 15, 2009 at 2:13 PM
What does that prove, Jets fan? Nothing.
As I said, the NFL investigation concluded that Shawn Walsh had no evidence, and no corroborating witnesses to back up his story.
Del Dolemonte on November 15, 2009 at 2:15 PM
As predicted earlier, you don’t seem to see any similarity between “cheating”, and “breaking the rules to gain an unfair advantage”.
Please…I know many a Cheatriots fan, and they all admit Bellicheat cheated. You’re the only one who seems to think they did not.
JetBoy on November 15, 2009 at 2:18 PM
So Bellicheat and the Pats were wrongfully fined nd punished by the commish?
JetBoy on November 15, 2009 at 2:20 PM
Rams and Saints tied 14-14 at the half.
Totally unrelated-they were fined before the investigation into Walsh’s claims had started.
BTW my source is in the Sports Department at one of the Boston papers. Not a football show or WFAN in New York.
Del Dolemonte on November 15, 2009 at 2:23 PM
Sure you do. And sure they did.
I am going by what the two Boston newspapers reported and what the NFL found. And all of them agree.
If you think the NFL is covering up for the team, why are you still a football fan? Shouldn’t you boycott an organization that excuses “cheating”?
Del Dolemonte on November 15, 2009 at 2:26 PM
Every time Ben Roethlisberger is sacked an angel get its wings.
Mallard T. Drake on November 15, 2009 at 2:36 PM
Well, those two Boston papers wouldn’t at all be partial to those Pats now, would they?
Anyway, you keep on believing that those Cheatriots got a bad rep and did nothing wrong.
You really are blind.
JetBoy on November 15, 2009 at 2:40 PM
That was name calling? The reality is they cheated . The NFL thought enough to fine them the largest AMOUNT EVER. Wonder why?
And again if you do not think they had an interest in stifling the story I have some land in Philly too. Enjoy your afternoon. Back to the game.
CWforFreedom on November 15, 2009 at 2:40 PM
Oh and forever the ( * ) will be there. Maybe not in print but NFL fans know.
later
CWforFreedom on November 15, 2009 at 2:42 PM
Tony Dungy, one of the most respected and honest men in all of professional sports, went postal on Bellicheat and accused him of being a serial cheater. And he was just giving voice to what every NFL coach already knew. It was the first and only time I ever heard Dungy say a critical word about anyone in the sport. That’s all I need to know.

Del Dolemonte on November 15, 2009 at 3:13 PM
Saints now lead the Lambs, 28-17. 10 minutes left in the game.
Jets losing to the Jaxes? They should learn how to cheat like the Patriots.
Del Dolemonte on November 15, 2009 at 3:28 PM
Reason number 33212 why the NFL sucks; The 2 games I have to chose from are Jets v. Jags and Vikes v Lions (and the Favre lovefest).
I just glanced up, but idiots are still crying about the Patriots? Really?
I think the figure skating open thread is two doors down.

The Bengal defense has been unreal this year.
NCC on November 15, 2009 at 4:14 PM
Oh… but they didn’t and lost. So sad.
Bellicheck and his team could have done the right thing and not cheated. But they didn’t and the Patriots are cheaters forever with Cracker-Jack Superbowl rings.
