NFL week 10 open thread
posted at 11:00 am on November 15, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
The Pittsburgh Steelers have the Cincinnati Bengals as their guests this week in their most significant game of the season. Both teams are 6-2, and technically tied for the division lead — but the Bengals own the tiebreaker, having beaten the Steelers earlier in the season. However, the Steelers have improved on both sides of the ball over the last few weeks, and dominated Denver on the road in an impressive 28-10 win. Cincinnati played well against Baltimore to win 17-7, but they have yet to dominate. It will surprise no one that I’m picking the Steelers to win this game at home, taking the division lead and nullifying the Bengals’ tiebreaker advantage. I’ll predict a 28-17 win, with at least one defensive or special-teams TD.
By the way, King Banaian will be at that game, and he didn’t even have the decency to scalp me a ticket! As he well knows, I will be “eating my heart out,” but if he brings me back a Steelers hat, I may forgive him … eventually. And if you missed it in our headlines earlier this week, be sure to read Tim McNulty’s post about why I’m a Steeler fan. And hey, Tim … if you can wangle me a press pass for a game this season, I’ll be in Steel City faster than you can say Jack Lambert, and certainly faster than anyone can say Troy Polamalu.
Last week, I put up another 3-3 record, making me 33-14 on the season but only .500 over the last two weeks. Let’s see if I can’t do better with these picks:
- Detroit at Minnesota — The Vikings come off their bye week, so they may be unprepared — oh, jeez, forget it. The Vikes only lose this game if they get caught in a freak snowstorm at the 35W-94 split. 34-10, Vikes.
- Philadelphia at San Diego — I gave too much credit last week to the Eagles and not enough to the Chargers. I’m picking the Bolts at home, but it should be close. 24-21, Chargers.
- Kansas City at Oakland – The Futility Bowl of the Week. KC barely lost to the Jaguars, and Oakland’s coming off the bye with questions about the head coach’s mental stability. Well, he did agree to work for Al Davis, didn’t he? I’ll pick the Raiders in a mild upset, 17-10, but only because they’re at home for this one.
- New England at Indianapolis – I correctly picked the Colts to win last week, and their defense played better than I expected. The Pats have won three in a row, but against some lousy competition. Peyton Manning is at home, and that will make the difference. Colts stay unbeaten, 21-17.
- Jacksonville at the Jets — Jazz Shaw wants me to stop picking the Giants to win, and this week I don’t have a choice, since they’re on their bye week. So I’ll pick the Jets to win at home instead. The Jaguars have four wins, all but one of them against cellar-dwellers (Houston being the exception), while the Jets have beaten Houston and New England. They’re playing at home, too, and the Jags have only one road win. I’ll call this 27-14 Jets.

Well I’m sure glad I didn’t say “go broncos” earlier. My, my my.

I guess that’s because nobody — NO BOD EE — except the Beltway Brigade, gives a bloody damn about the Skins. And they only care about them at cocktail parties in Georgetown, where they can appear, but not be, “real” men. -_*

It’s sad…I was in D.C. for a wedding in 1999 (2 years to the day before 9/11 no less) and the entire town was excited about Snyder’s buying the team. Not just the girly-men politicians, but the little folks too. Now they want to run him own of town.
Del Dolemonte on November 15, 2009 at 6:16 PM
Sorry, I meant they want to run him OUT of town.
Del Dolemonte on November 15, 2009 at 6:17 PM
Hey, if you’re from Virginia Beach they are the hometown team.
Cindy Munford on November 15, 2009 at 6:27 PM
That fumble just now in the Oakland-KC game was hilarious! Sure to make blooper reels.
WannabeAnglican on November 15, 2009 at 6:29 PM
Dismal game for Dallas. Sad offense. Numerous injuries. And about to go down 10-0.
WannabeAnglican on November 15, 2009 at 6:39 PM
Wow, I did not realize the Rangers & Brewers were playing tonight. 3-0. Looks like a decent pitchers duel.
rbj on November 15, 2009 at 6:43 PM
Sorry for the stereotype, but I’ve been there in those dinners and coctail parties in Georgetown, listening to drivelers drivel on about their “team”.

WHO DEY!
tomas on November 15, 2009 at 6:58 PM
Ed, I take back everything I said. The Cowboys SUUUUCCCCKKK. and deserve to be ignored.
Of course I will forget all that by next weekend and call you a hater again.
conservnut on November 15, 2009 at 7:01 PM
Anybody but me think Newt and Dallas Cowboy coach Wade Phillips were separated at birth?
TXUS on November 15, 2009 at 7:10 PM
Geezzz Louise! Why are they not handing the ball off to Barber there?
Paper sack for my head time………..
conservnut on November 15, 2009 at 7:14 PM
Not separated, twins. But momma only had one tit and Wade had to suck daddy.
conservnut on November 15, 2009 at 7:16 PM
How did those Steelers do today?
Oh, nevermind…
Khun Joe on November 15, 2009 at 7:22 PM
I love my Vikings, especially after Sidney Rice’s dominant game. Brett Favre & Adrian Peterson had pretty good games offensively & Ray Edwards dominated on defense.
Clearly, the Vikings & Saints are the dominant teams in the NFC.
LFRGary on November 15, 2009 at 7:28 PM
Well, small consolation, but at least it’s not a shutout.
conservnut on November 15, 2009 at 7:34 PM
Chiefs Win! Chiefs Win!
Two Down, Seven more to go and we can get a wildcard spot!
Wolftech on November 15, 2009 at 7:42 PM
Figured my Packers would blow chunks so I decided to get some work done, figures. What did Capers say to the defense to get them to play a whole game?
Side note, I think maybe today was Brian Westbrook’s last game in the NFL, darn shame.
lowandslow on November 15, 2009 at 7:49 PM
Go Bears?
jimboslice on November 15, 2009 at 7:52 PM
That’s like sayin’ “At least it was my cousin I kissed and not my sister.
mmmmmm……I don’t think Ed did so well today. Congrats to the Packers and the Bengals.
Rovin on November 15, 2009 at 7:57 PM
Bengals D/ST really got it done today. Great pressure, multiple sacks and batted passes on 3rd down. Game MVP goes to Bengals rookie Bernard Scott.
Christien on November 15, 2009 at 8:12 PM
Olbermann is even lying about football analysis now. He claims the refs ruled it belonged to Dallas but it was not reviewable so the Packers get the ball. The refs never said Dallas recovered it.
He just inserts lies into confusion to make it hard to call him on his lies. He’s just practicing his craft with his football analysis.
Buddahpundit on November 15, 2009 at 8:18 PM
LT is back. Chargers win 4 in a row immediately after I vowed to never watching them again.
Geochelone on November 15, 2009 at 8:24 PM
90 yard drive. Peyton makes it look soooooo easy.
tommyboy on November 15, 2009 at 8:48 PM
Randy Moss makes it look sooooooo easy.
rslancer14 on November 15, 2009 at 9:24 PM
Brady to Moss for a touchdown. Beautiful.
Geronimo on November 15, 2009 at 9:25 PM
Totally irrelevant, because they’re cheaters, remember?
By the way, how does one “cheat” when making a circus catch like Randy Moss did?
Cheaters now lead 24-7
Del Dolemonte on November 15, 2009 at 9:38 PM
(Applause)
Del Dolemonte on November 15, 2009 at 9:40 PM
Meh, that argument doesn’t bother me. Brady, Moss, Welker, watching the Patriots play whoever is something I look forward to all week.
And the Colts are my second favorite team, so tonight is a good night.
Geronimo on November 15, 2009 at 10:18 PM
Just when they were written off and left for dead…how about them Packers?! What an awesome defensive performance by Charles Woodson and crew!
packsoldier on November 15, 2009 at 10:24 PM
Sarcasm, my friend! Read back earlier in the thread.
Del Dolemonte on November 15, 2009 at 11:18 PM
3 and a half minutes left, Indy has the ball but are 13 points in the hole.
Del Dolemonte on November 15, 2009 at 11:23 PM
Colts are coming back! 34-28 NE 2:23 to go.
Del Dolemonte on November 15, 2009 at 11:27 PM
Refs blew that spot……it was a first down, but Indy made a good comeback just the same. Eastern games are so boring.
Rovin on November 15, 2009 at 11:46 PM
Un. Freakin’. Believable.
That’ll teach ‘em not to punt. They had that game in the bag….then gave it away.
Grrrrr!
Geronimo on November 15, 2009 at 11:48 PM
Belichick’s gonna have a hard time ‘splanin’ this one.
Rovin on November 15, 2009 at 11:55 PM
What a joke….got to follow the script no matter what. I was pretty much done with the NFL after their little “diversity” experiment in Miami, after tonights work in fiction the NFL might as well be the WWF!
Buh bye….
dmann on November 15, 2009 at 11:59 PM
ROFLMAO ha..ha..he..he
Ed, stick to politics. There is always next year, maybe you’ll do well in the draft.
Who Dey? Nobody in the AFC North!!!
HellCat on November 16, 2009 at 12:01 AM
Colts: Epic win!
Patriots: Epic fail. :-(
I only saw the 4th quarter of the game. It was enough.
Mojave Mark on November 16, 2009 at 12:49 AM
Go Saints! :) :) :)
Theophile on November 16, 2009 at 3:11 AM
The Bengals could go undefeated for three years and still not be respected. The same goes for the Bearcats. So what – who cares? We’re lovin’ it here in Cincy.
RustBelt on November 16, 2009 at 6:53 AM
A pretty convincing argument that BB made the right call. They estimate NE’s winning percentage at 79% if they go for it, 70% if they kick. You can play with the numbers to fit the game situation a little better, but the call still looks good even with the numbers significantly tweaked.
RightOFLeft on November 16, 2009 at 8:30 AM
While I’m delighted by the Colt’s win, I don’t fault the coach’s call on that fourth down. He had faith in his team and knew he had to keep the ball out of Manning’s hands, especially in the last two minutes. No guts, no glory.
SKYFOX on November 16, 2009 at 8:35 AM
I wouldn’t have mattered if Pats did Punt. Colts were destined to win that game and in spectacular fashion.
tommyboy on November 16, 2009 at 9:27 AM
Never truer words spoken.
Only the ESPN panel spoke positively of the Bengals.
Of course, going 2-0 against both the Ravens and the Steelers IS a tad difficult to dismiss away as a ‘fluke’.
