Japan expert to ABC: Yes, Obama’s bow made him look like an idiot

posted at 7:45 pm on November 15, 2009 by Allahpundit

So much of an idiot, in fact, that according to Tapper’s source, at least one Japanese paper isn’t running the photo out of embarrassment. This tool actually groveled himself into a minor international incident.

The good news for O-bots? It wasn’t unprecedented. Nixon evidently made a modest bow to Hirohito in the early 70s. The bad news?

“Obama’s handshake/forward lurch was so jarring and inappropriate it recalls Bush’s back-rub of Merkel.

“Kyodo News is running his appropriate and reciprocated nod and shake with the Empress, certainly to show the president as dignified, and not in the form of a first year English teacher trying to impress with Karate Kid-level knowledge of Japanese customs.

“The bow as he performed did not just display weakness in Red State terms, but evoked weakness in Japanese terms….The last thing the Japanese want or need is a weak looking American president and, again, in all ways, he unintentionally played that part.

A senior White House official (read: Axelrod or Emanuel) assured Politico this morning that no Japanese observers “would say anything other than that he enhanced both the position and the status of the U.S., relative to Japan.” Consider that spin exploded, thanks to ABC.

And yet, having said that, I’m not convinced that the “groveling” explanation for the bow is necessarily the correct one. For one thing, his protocol office is famously run by imbeciles. They may very well have simply given him bum advice: “Be sure to hunch way the hell over and stare at the ground. They all do it that way.” For another thing, and somewhat notably, Japan isn’t a stop on The One’s world apology tour. It could have been, but he declined the opportunity to turn it into one. So why give the emperor the full Hopenchange treatment, then? Is it just … reflex at this point? Or is it actually a sign of how keenly aware Obama is of the messianic hype that follows him around the world? Maybe he figured that, as the newly anointed global Jesus, he’d better go out of his way to show deference to Japan’s divine ruler lest it seem like he was “pulling rank.” Think of it as “Superman II,” if the main characters had landed on Earth convinced that they had to “rebuild Krypton’s relationships” with the universe. In that case, you don’t kneel before Zod; Zod kneels before you.

My Irish grandmother knew more about protocol than these over paid fools in our State Department.

But symbolic subservience to a foreign ruler is worse. When Miss Manners sees American citizens delighting in bowing or curtseying to royalty, she tries to remind herself that they are just being silly, not treasonous. When an American official does it, we can only hope it was because he was noticing that his own shoelace was undone — and not that he recognizes the divine right of kings in general, or the authority over us of that king in particular.

52% of the electorate certainly behaved that way last year, which, at the time, I’d likened to a bad night of drinking. To those of us who were not drunk on Hope and Change, this year has been a nightmare, while to those who were, there is great denial of the danger they have placed themselves in.

52% of Americans got drunk on the Obama kool-aid, and now the rest of us are suffering from the hang-over. Unfortunately, 3 more years of it.

The real story here doesn’t have anything to do with foreign relations protocol…it has to do with domestic protocol. The fact that this tool bowed reflects badly on our country…not on Japan…they are just laughing at this idiot. The joke is on us, not them.

AUINSC on November 15, 2009 at 9:08 PM

It’s even worse than that. I’ve lived in three Asian countries, Japan one of them, for quite a few years. And I think I can safely say that not only did he look week, but the bow, had it even been appropriate, was executed poorly. He looked like an uncoordinated oaf. That was multicultural Obama following his totally clueless perceptions of a foreign culture. The funny thing about most multiculturalists, they have no real understanding of other cultures.

That’s true because Progressives, have proven to be intolerant ideological bigots, they actually believe they are superior. For no reason anyone can fathom. They just keep telling each other, they are superior “echo chamber” you know Anita Dunn thought, that Mao reference made her appear intellectual. She had to posture in front of High School children. That’s some deep seated insecurity going on there if you have to get reassurance of your id from teens. Over compensating for self doubt. Anita ask herself am I really a hypocrite? Anita then ask herself, would hypocrisy make me appear superior or is it actually just an intellectual conundrum. No Anita, you are really twisted, and don’t know up from down. They really are chasing their tales/tails.

My expert in the family advises Obummer:

First off, you obsequious jack-ass, you don’t bow and shake hands at the same time. You’d think that Indonesian charm school would have taught you that. Secondly, as President of the United States, you sure as hell don’t do a deep 90 degree bow to anybody, including the so-called Emperor of Japan, who only has that role thanks to U.S. General Douglas MacArthur. If you wish to demonstrate cultural “sensitivity,” then a 30 degree bow from the waist, neck straight, would have been acceptable. Even then, the Japanese don’t expect foreigners to bow, and often laugh at the foreigners who do it.

There are so many reasons this is just plain wrong.

Obama is supposed to represent cultured and suave. He’s supposed to have taken a course on traditional East Asian greetings – after all, he’s the first Pacific President. He’s supposed to have a sense of history. And as we’ve seen, nothing the current administration does is “accidental.” The constant “Obama is smart” chattering is getting extremely annoying. Obama would do better to pull a Bush and just laugh at his lack of knowledge on a correct greeting, but instead he and his cohorts try to rationalize their mistakes.

There is an absolute disconnect between Obama’s numbers and his policies! Something is wrong here. Is the fix in? It has to be! Does half the country really think our President should grovel on the world stage? Does half the country think it is bygones will be bygones with terrorists?

Obama hasn’t done one decent thing in his entire first year!
The fix has got to be in!

Obama, worse than Nixon in every way.

Hmm, where are all the lefty Japanophiles to call this expert a right-wing nutjob?

misterpeasea on November 15, 2009 at 10:13 PM

There are so many reasons this is just plain wrong.

Obama is supposed to represent cultured and suave. He’s supposed to have taken a course on traditional East Asian greetings – after all, he’s the first Pacific President. He’s supposed to have a sense of history. And as we’ve seen, nothing the current administration does is “accidental.” The constant “Obama is smart” chattering is getting extremely annoying. Obama would do better to pull a Bush and just laugh at his lack of knowledge on a correct greeting, but instead he and his cohorts try to rationalize their mistakes.

MeatHeadinCA on November 15, 2009 at 9:33 PM

It is all a lie. Everything ever said about or by Obama is a lie.

I think he was really born to a black mother and white father in some po dunk city and was plucked off the street and given this part to play and his whole story is totally made up! Not one thing he does makes any sense at all!

Okay one thing. His grandparents chose a communist to be his black mentor growing up…there is some truth in that somehow, because he does love communism.

But he doesn’t know history. He doesn’t know anything about any culture where he was supposed to be exposed so thoroughly! He just doesn’t seem to know anything about anything. You would think something would have worn off about Japan if he really was raised in Hawaii, Indonesia, and California!

You would think he would realize the importance of protocol in foreign relations! It’s like the concept of other people’s cultures and sending messages by doing things wrong never occurs to him!

And now its on to China, where Chairman Maobama will get down on his knees and beg the Chicoms to buy more of his bonds.

james23 on November 15, 2009 at 10:16 PM

Do you think when he meets Kim Jong Il that he’ll set him on his knee and playfully grab at his belly..

“I’m gonna get that tummy….”

Good times. Good times.

Gaffes, mistakes, lies, and confusion. Added to that a jaw-dropping ego.

That’s OBAMA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

betsyz on November 15, 2009 at 10:20 PM

He was heard to be muttering something like, “Kiss my a..” as he bent over so I think he was insulting someone behind him. (Biden? Hillery?)

Rod on November 15, 2009 at 10:25 PM

Think of it as “Superman II,” if the main characters had landed on Earth convinced that they had to “rebuild Krypton’s relationships” with the universe. In that case, you don’t kneel before Zod; Zod kneels before you.

Fool. Zod kneels for no Earthman.

ZOD IN 2012

And yet, having said that, I’m not convinced that..

I just got here, but can I just say….classic Allahpundit!

Japan expert to ABC: Yes, Obama’s bow made him look like an idiot

We know, we’ve seen him do it before. But thanks for pointing it out for the world to see.

UltimateBob on November 15, 2009 at 11:15 PM

The real reason he bowed? He knows that he’s the smallest, green-behind-the-gills fish in a big pond. He is an insult to America.

CynicalOptimist on November 15, 2009 at 11:18 PM

The funny thing about most multiculturalists, they have no real understanding of other cultures.

Very true. Does anyone else recall Obama sniffing about how embarrassed he was by Americans that can’t speak the language of a country they are visiting, only to have it revealed later that the Snob-in-Chief speaks precisely zero languages, excuding English? But after all, he has the right woozy, wooly attitudes about other cultures…why learn anything about them?

Jeffersonian on November 15, 2009 at 11:20 PM

I suppose, our dear reader does not know, what fool he makes of himself.
