Japan expert to ABC: Yes, Obama’s bow made him look like an idiot

posted at 7:45 pm on November 15, 2009 by Allahpundit

So much of an idiot, in fact, that according to Tapper’s source, at least one Japanese paper isn’t running the photo out of embarrassment. This tool actually groveled himself into a minor international incident.

The good news for O-bots? It wasn’t unprecedented. Nixon evidently made a modest bow to Hirohito in the early 70s. The bad news?

“Obama’s handshake/forward lurch was so jarring and inappropriate it recalls Bush’s back-rub of Merkel.

“Kyodo News is running his appropriate and reciprocated nod and shake with the Empress, certainly to show the president as dignified, and not in the form of a first year English teacher trying to impress with Karate Kid-level knowledge of Japanese customs.

“The bow as he performed did not just display weakness in Red State terms, but evoked weakness in Japanese terms….The last thing the Japanese want or need is a weak looking American president and, again, in all ways, he unintentionally played that part.

A senior White House official (read: Axelrod or Emanuel) assured Politico this morning that no Japanese observers “would say anything other than that he enhanced both the position and the status of the U.S., relative to Japan.” Consider that spin exploded, thanks to ABC.

And yet, having said that, I’m not convinced that the “groveling” explanation for the bow is necessarily the correct one. For one thing, his protocol office is famously run by imbeciles. They may very well have simply given him bum advice: “Be sure to hunch way the hell over and stare at the ground. They all do it that way.” For another thing, and somewhat notably, Japan isn’t a stop on The One’s world apology tour. It could have been, but he declined the opportunity to turn it into one. So why give the emperor the full Hopenchange treatment, then? Is it just … reflex at this point? Or is it actually a sign of how keenly aware Obama is of the messianic hype that follows him around the world? Maybe he figured that, as the newly anointed global Jesus, he’d better go out of his way to show deference to Japan’s divine ruler lest it seem like he was “pulling rank.” Think of it as “Superman II,” if the main characters had landed on Earth convinced that they had to “rebuild Krypton’s relationships” with the universe. In that case, you don’t kneel before Zod; Zod kneels before you.

Actually, I think it is.

I think this is the apology.

He couldn’t go and call Harry Truman a war criminal. But–as head of state of the warmongering country that bombed the poor hapless peace-loving citizens of Hiroshima and Nagasaki–he can bow obsequiously to the current Emperor as proof he’s sorry for the past sins of his poor benighted country.

Actually, AP, I think Obama sees himself as Superman in “Superman IV”. An arrogant elitist being who wants to rid the world of nuclear weapons and other Bad Things, and who believes the world will mindlessly applaud him, like they applauded Supes in the movie. And he thinks conservatives are as dumb as Nuclear Man, but we’re also backed by Teh Eeeevil Military-Industrial Complex people, like Lex Luthor.

I think he fancies himself such a Citizen of the World that he’s going to show off how much he knows of other culture’s customs. (Remember when he criticized Americans for not speaking French – which he probably doesn’t either?).

He always thinks he’s the smartest guy in the room, and now that he’s president, he thinks that’s been confirmed.

But his knowledge of other cultures is spotty, and he has no idea of how the president of the United States should behave.

So on top of everything else that makes him look like an idiot…..Porkulus, Cash 4 Clunkers, the auto takeovers, overall economy, Iran jabbing their finger in his eye, the missile shield announcement on a solemn Polish holiday, the pitch in “mom” jeans, failure of a trip to Europe to woo the Olympic Comittee, the deficit, unemployment, the “Czars”, Anita Dunn, Rev. Wright, Joe Biden, New Jersey, Virginia, “Jobs” summit, bowing to the Saudis….

…and then he goes and does it again.

The first time I read this, I thought that they meant that the position and status of the U.S. became greater as compared to that of Japan, which seems to be a competitive statement contrary to the no-American-exceptionalism tone of the administration. Then I realized that it’s just incredibly inept use of language. The meaning must have been intended as “from Japan’s perspective” rather than “relative to Japan”.

Obama’s bow violates a fundamental precept: NO TOUCHING while bowing.
The one thing that virtually everyone who teaches bowing etiquette stresses is under no circumstance try to combine a bow with a handshake. Never look to the ground. Have a straight back (show you have a spine).

Multiculturalists fancy themselves knowledgable about other countries but rarely spend the considerable amount of time to study how other people live, particularly in matters of etiquette. I think this guy’s right. This is why Obama abased himself and the United States before the Emperor of Japan: out of shame.

But this is only a shame that Obama and his malformed, adolescent advisors are conscious of.

This Great Fool, Obama, is apparently unaware that, had the Japanese had their way, our country would no longer exist. But not for the military might of the United States, Hirohito would have defeated us (and the Canadians) and turned us into a vassal nation. Obama should thank God that someone did something about that. He would hold us all to account for the firebombing of Tokyo, but no American should regret that. Because, as all Americans at the time well understood, no Japanese citizen was prepared to surrender.

Instead, Obama humiliates himself and all but urinates before Hirohito’s son.

General LeMay and MacArthur are turning in their graves at the sight of this deformed and disgusting parody of a Man writhing before the Chrysanthemum Throne.

“Smart diplomacy” apparently involves groveling in apology for events half a century old.

His protocol office needs to hire a few cultural anthropologists or psychological anthropologists. Sure, they may be liberal as hell, but they should be able to educate the rube on the differences between ‘shame-based cultures’ (such as most East Asian cultures, and the Islamic cultures) and ‘guilt-based cultures’ (such as most of the Western cultures.)

By kowtowing like this in obvious apology for the indignity of what the U.S. did to the Emperor’s father, he has publicly acknowledged our so-called shame. When you do that in places Japan, you may as well offer them your neck upon which to place their boot. Even the Japanese press are embarrassed for us. That’s saying a lot.

See, this wouldn’t be an issue at all if Obama had kept it at a Japanese-style bow. You know, hands at sides, a 5-10 degree incline, sort of a nod. That’s how you’re supposed to do it, if you’re going to do it. Otherwise, a firm handshake is all that is required.

Obama’s bow to the emperor’s wife was the correct form. If only he’d kept it to that for the emperor…
