The obligatory “Newsweek dumps all over Palin” post

posted at 4:50 pm on November 14, 2009 by Allahpundit

People on Twitter are nudging me to write about it, but what is there to say? The mainstream leftist take on Palin should be familiar to the point of utter banality by now; the only fresh element to Meacham’s and Thomas’s pieces is that they resist invoking Richard Hofstadter, which means they’re not even good drinking-game material. (That’s especially disappointing in the case of Thomas, who usually leaves no opportunity to demagogue the right untaken.) Andy Levy calls the two articles some of the laziest political writing he’s ever read, which is appropriate: Via Karl, compare this week’s Newsweek cover to this 1995 classic from Time magazine. We’ve been here before, folks. Many, many times.

Thomas:

Obama knows the long odds against a right-wing populist winning the presidency, no matter how good she looks in a skirt (or running clothes), brandishing a gun. He shouldn’t be too cocky, however, because the death of the center is ultimately a problem for him and the whole country. If the Palinistas seize the GOP, they probably cannot take the White House. But their brand of no-prisoners partisanship sure can tie up Congress…

Dwight Eisenhower governed in the 1950s by deftly uniting center and right, and Ronald Reagan did the same in the 1980s. They needed to be flexible to the point of gross expediency. To placate the far right, Ike shamefully refused to stand up for his friend and fellow statesman Gen. George Marshall, who was ludicrously attacked by Sen. Joe McCarthy as “soft” on communism. Reagan piously gave lip service to the right-wing social agenda while doing nothing to further it by legislation; he also chose George H.W. Bush to be his vice president and allowed the ultrapragmatic James A. Baker III to run the White House. The “Gipper” talked tough about the Russians–while doing more than any other president to foster détente. With a slyness that belied their smiling patriotism, Eisenhower and Reagan confused and occasionally exasperated their own followers. But it’s no coincidence the Eisenhower ’50s and Reagan ’80s were periods of unusual peace and prosperity.

“The ‘only good Republican is a dead Republican’ meme again,” sniffs Karl. As for Meacham:

We have been to this movie before, when the unreconstructed liberals of the fading New Deal–Great Society coalition obstinately refused to acknowledge the reality that America is a center-right nation, and that Democrats who wish to win national elections cannot run on the left. We are at our best as a country when there is something approaching a moderate space in politics. The middle way is not always the right way—far from it. But sometimes it is, and a wise nation should cultivate a political spirit that allows opponents to cooperate without fearing an automatic execution from their core supporters.

Meacham, at least, has been consistent on this point. Not so for many of his friends in establishment media, who’ll be clucking in agreement with this sentiment tomorrow morning despite not worrying terribly much last November that Democrats might use their huge majority in Congress to ram through a Great Society II agenda. Funny how the virtues of moderation seem to reveal themselves only when it’s conservatives who are behaving immoderately. (Which, these days, it isn’t.) I wonder, does the fact that independents are starting to break big towards the right affect the conventional wisdom on where, precisely, the moderate middle is located these days, or is it fixed for the time being at wherever our “pragmatist” post-partisan president happens to say it is?

If that’s not enough Newsweek for you, enjoy senior editor Michael Hirsh wringing his hands this morning on CBS over Palin’s “disturbing” vindictiveness. This comes on the same day, mind you, that news is breaking about how Anita Dunn’s fantastically petty attack on Fox News did indeed come from the top, likely ordered by a guy who’s been known to act out the fantasy deaths of his political enemies with a steak knife. Exit question: What’s the most cynical part of Newsweek’s attack? That they’d wait for the week when her book dropped to try to piggyback on the buzz? Or that they’d use that cheesecake photo from Runner’s World on the cover to try to sell it?

OT slightly, but not really in general: I was in a theatre to watch 2012 and saw the trailer for Did You Hear About the Morgans, which was funny right up until they made a crack about Sarah Palin. Yep, they’re obsessed.

I’m just not interested in far-right anti-abortion or anti-all reform agendas.

I’m starting to question her agenda.

If it’s a kick-back to the religious right era, then I’ll probably end up acknowledging her personality….and moving as far and fast away as possible.

AnninCA on November 14, 2009 at 7:10 PM

Idiot. Anti-abortion is not akin to religion. Anti-abortion is akin to the constitutional rights of the every UNBORN BUT LIVING AMERICAN FETUS. You were also a fetus once. Anti-abortion is the MODERATE (READ: RESPONSIBLE) cure for the excesses of LIBERTARIANISM. You and your boyfriend/husband can do it anytime … but beware. You may get knocked off and a “burden” child will be the result. What? You’re only addicted to climax and a baby is anti-climatic?

Idiot. I haven’t seen any real reform from current Administration of Obama.

Idiot. Your mentality is already far left. It’s about time to stop your ignorance about your real political leanings. You may be genius in pretending but you’re still a moron in understanding your own self.

You can start moving. If you don’t mind, may I recommend DKOs and HuffPo for your perfect site to move on.

The hypocrisy of the liberal left and the liberal left media is just unfreakinreal!!! During the campaign the seriously biased media flocked to Alaska and searched under each and every rock hoping for some dirt on Palin, who was a VICE Presidential candidate! But, shamefully, they failed to even do a minimum of vetting on Obama, who was a Presidential candidate! Palin is an intelligent, beautiful, conservative wife and mother of five. Her and her family are an all American, bible-clinging, gun-toting, Constitutional loving, fiscal conservative, Country-honoring, middle American family and are an asset to this Great Country. As Governor, she began by rooting out the corruption in her own party, before moving on to the corruption in the opposing party. From the moment she stepped on the national stage, the media began their savage and unprecedented attack on her, her husband and her children and through it all she showed an amazing grace and determination. After the campaign, left wing liberals began to attack her in the courts, filing 15-20 bogus lawsuits that, one after another were dismissed, none “stuck”.

On the other hand the media ignored, or never bothered to look at Obama and his past or present. Had they taken a few minutes and done a google search they would have easily seen him for what he is. He is an American hating, marxist loving, social justice, redistribute the wealth, corrupt Chicago machine politician who has spent 1.7 million dollars in lawyer fees to keep from having to produce ANY of his personal records. He has in his administration more than 30 unelected. unconfirmed czars that We the People pay and yet they answer to him and him alone, not us. He gave to his union buddies the car companies, bypassing bankruptcy laws that have been in place from the start and at We the Peoples expense! He has labeled half of the people in this country as terrorists while bringing actual terrorists to this country, giving them full rights and a show trial that will cost We the People millions of dollars and decrease our national safety.

I could go on and on and on, listing dozens and dozens things this man and his administration, czars, fellow democrats, union buddies and ACORN cronies have done to We the People and this great Country, things that done by any conservative or republican would have landed them in jail, but it is pointless to try talking about the truth to a liberal, as there is only their way and no other. Most liberals won’t even try telling you that what you are saying is not true, but will immediately resort to name calling and personal attacks. so please continue your frenzied attack on Palin and other conservatives and ignore the destruction of this great Country by our Marxist-in-Chief.

The only thing I ask is that you keep your crying and whining to yourself when you wake up and find that YOUR Freedom and Liberty are gone, the same as mine.

The thing is, the idiots at Newsweak probably think this photo demeans Sarah somehow. (even though she cheerfully posed for it)

These people have DEEP psychological issues.

This photo is like a Norman Rockwell painting for God’s sake! (with a taste of Alberto Vargas thrown in!)

Here you have the beautiful All-American girl next door in a wholesome setting, with the American flag.

This is mom, baseball, and apple pie stuff!

People will see this photo and think “man, I like this gal!”

Stupid liberals.

gary4205 on November 14, 2009 at 10:07 PM

Plus, the initial responses to her book aren’t relevant. It’s a bit like Obama’s misstep in the election, when he said people are “clinging to guns and religion.” The initial response of people is often more forgiving than it should be, frankly. PA still gave him their vote. So did Ohio and other Appalacian states.

However, it builds up. People don’t forget. Now, they see he really did mean that insult. He went after Fox. He uses insults about THEM at teaparties to push his Democrats.

It’s no longer excuseable. He does see them as ignorant and not worthy of being heard.

His words about no Red or Blue states ring hollow now.

It’s the same thing with Sarah. The initial response may sound negative, but I think people are watching carefully. And they are not going to be impressed by the latest left attack on her.

They sympathize with her. More important, they see the press bias.

I trust people to sort it out.

As much as I think the Newsweek cover and accompanying articles are stupid, I’m going to have to agree on the vindictiveness part. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…Sarah seems to hold grudges. I mean she made a joke about John Kerry after he made some comments about while she was overseas and visiting with the troops. I would have left that alone. And let’s face it the whole “I was told Katie Couric has low self-eteem” is just a petty pot shot at her. Nothing else. There is no reason that should be in the book. Pathetic.

Pathetic is the proper word for you.

You’re so full of crap.

I don’t believe in “perfection.” Nobody’s perfect. But right now if I had to chose between Romney or Palin for 2012. I think I would chose Romney for several reasons.

terryannonline on November 14, 2009 at 6:41 PM

Jesus, a friggin’ Romneybot. No wonder you are such an idiot.

So there it comes , you mean Romney isn’t vindictive !? He’s been sniping on Sarah time after time and she never said a bad word about him.

He has? I’m not aware of any sniping. Do have any links to this?

Are you kidding? It was Romney’s people who started the whole flap in Iowa a week or so ago about an event Sarah wasn’t coming to and never asked for money from!

Romney is worse than Huckabee about this sort of thing. Both are sniveling little $hits. The only difference is Romney is sneakier. he attacks from the shadows through surrogates.

One thing about Sarah, she’ll look a son-of-a-bitch in the eye when she calls them out. She says what she thinks.

Now go away.

gary4205 on November 15, 2009 at 12:16 AM

Wait; I voted for Ronaldus Magnus.

noblejones on November 15, 2009 at 12:40 AM

They need to keep her in the girly giddy light and not the serious warrior that she is. I keep thinking of Charlie Dork from CBS news interviewing her and they kept him in the foreground with the solid black man hard shoe in the forground and kept her small looking in the background knees together in the interview. Oh they know how to work the imagery. It shows you she is still a threat. Let her loose and watch her rip it to shreds.

johnnyU on November 15, 2009 at 12:54 AM

Speedwagon82 on November 14, 2009 at 9:19 PM

I agree that a person’s approved publicity photo is just that. Of itself, Newsweek‘s Palin cover photo is no disservice to Palin. It’s her own approved shot for publication.

Categorically dissecting appropriate appearances or behaviors is hypocritical PC bs.

There is nothing in the world wrong with Palin’s great athletic photo. A person would have to be perverted to take offense by her publicity photo. Palin is not the mother of Christ, and those who would criticize the appearance of her athletic publicity shot in a magazine of a different genre can take up their argument with the editor of Newsweek. Palin didn’t ask for the Newsweek cover, and I certainly doubt that she is being paid by Newsweek for the use of her photo. Legally, Newsweek may have to acknowledge the photographer of the shot. And if someone does own copyrights on the photo (the photographer, the sports original magazine or Palin), then they should be paid for its use.

Whose panties are getting twisted in a wad by a photo of an extremely healthy, strong and intelligent woman keeping fit, ready to race, appearing on the likes of Newsweek? Purists of all nitwit sorts who have an inner angst problem with Palin, i.e., whether too chronically defensive or those who have a problem with powerful, beautiful patriotic conservative women.

I have no such problem. Go, Sarah! Palin motivates people to be the best they can be, even in that running gear shot. As with men in the course of daily life, conservative women whose life roles begin with wife, mother, patriot, diplomat and governor are respectable in the course of daily life, whether running or going out to dinner. And whatever mean spirit Newsweek meant to unleash against Sarah just took a big bite out of Newsweek’s @ss. Michelle Obama, no way on God’s green earth can your make-over compete against the real thing that we see in Sarah Palin.

maverick muse on November 15, 2009 at 7:08 AM

Furious. Damn Newsweek! One of the last issues published. Unless on next issue, I see BO with regular head and a child’s body to illustrate the “man-child” persona.

When Drudge published that excerpt of the book, of course I got upset. I was listening to Rush the day she called. Then signal cut. Then she called again. She called from the campaign bus.

Now when I read that I wondered if she was hiding in a corner to not be caught, hung up on her Crackberry to be safe from suspicion, and then called him back.

I am glad when I listened to Mark Levin that when she called him, he could speak to her. I heard him say that yesterday. I could be wrong and it was a cell phone tower switch-where we lose signal for a bit-or, she was being careful and hung up on purpose.

The only ppl who could know about that are Sarah and Rush, off the record.

Of course, please note that is my theory, not that I really believe that.

ginaswo on November 15, 2009 at 9:10 AM

Alot of the whining about Palin being petty and vindictive seems rather sexist to me. Apparently some still expect a female politician to quietly take the insults and smears. When Obama whined about FOX news we never saw the MSM call him petty and vindictive – just the blogs which everyone dismisses as bitter racists.

What’s kind of funny is that some of those same people calling her petty are the ones saying she has no chance of getting elected because of all the negative stuff about her. As usual the detractors want to fault her regardless of what approach she takes.

If indeed she is unelectable – why should she just quietly fade away and let her enemies define her? Why should she slink away based on their lies? Obama has had the entire MSM rising to his defense whenever he is attacked – maybe if Palin had outsiders mounting her defense she wouldn’t have to do it herself.

Persoanlly I believe her because the Scmidts and Wallaces have more to lose by the truth coming out.
In their disdain of Palin they probably figured she would play the game and crawl away without calling them out. I am glad she decided to give her side of what happened.

katiejane on November 15, 2009 at 9:23 AM

Or that they’d use that cheesecake photo from Runner’s World on the cover to try to sell it?

Yeah. The cover. It’s a good photo. Let’s be honest.

simplesimon is just trying to distract from the inadequacies of a president who was hyped up to be something he’s not. Obama can barely speak without a script or teleprompter, cannot hide his disdain for the United States or it’s people and for the life of him, can’t make any decision without having his goons mull over political ramifications.

I appreciate your defense of the photo, but I think you miss the point. Newsweek used this photo deliberately to demean Mrs. Palin. The log in the eye of male journalists is that they automatically size up every female politician as either Mother or Whore. Not hard to see which category they have put Mrs. Palin in.

This sexism reeks.

Liberals gave her that nickname. Why? What is their problem with a woman who wears skirts, keeps a trim figure, and enjoys being beautiful?

rockmom on November 15, 2009 at 9:50 AM

The thing is, the idiots at Newsweak probably think this photo demeans Sarah somehow. (even though she cheerfully posed for it)

These people have DEEP psychological issues.

This photo is like a Norman Rockwell painting for God’s sake! (with a taste of Alberto Vargas thrown in!)

Here you have the beautiful All-American girl next door in a wholesome setting, with the American flag.

This is mom, baseball, and apple pie stuff!

People will see this photo and think “man, I like this gal!”

Stupid liberals.

All you needed to see to know that the left is scared shytless of Palin was the look on Andrea Mitchell’s face after Palin gave her acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention.

She looked like someone had just shoved a hot pepper up her a$$.

Sarah slams AP again. Good for her.

Really? Still Making Things Up?
The book tour starts this week, and I look forward to it! I’m most looking forward to meeting many of you, shaking your hands, and telling you,”Thanks for loving America.” I’ll give you a scoop here and tell you what’s on the book’s Dedication Page – it’s dedicated to you – Patriots – who love the U.S.A. as much as I do.

Amazingly, but not surprisingly, the AP somehow nabbed a copy of the book before it was released. They’re now erroneously reporting on the book’s contents and are repeating many of the same things they spewed during the campaign and afterwards. We’ve heard 11 writers are engaged in this opposition research, er, “fact checking” research! Imagine that – 11 AP reporters dedicating time and resources to tearing up the book, instead of using the time and resources to “fact check” what’s going on with Sheik Mohammed’s trial, Pelosi’s health care takeover costs, Hasan’s associations, etc. Amazing.

We’ll keep setting the record straight, and we’ll keep reminding some in the media that Americans are very tired of their non-objective reporting. A great, recent post that accomplishes this is a Conservatives4Palin post. It’s got some nice fact checking included. As always, they did a great job holding some of the media accountable for spreading more misinformation and for making things up. You can read it here. Enjoy!

And I can’t wait to see you! God bless the fight for freedom! Keep up the great work, Patriots who love this country.

katiejane on November 15, 2009 at 11:18 AM

The photographer must have retained the copyright to the Palin image, which is usually the case with a contracted freelancer, unless the shooter is a staff photographer with the magazine.

What is surprising is most publishers insist on purchasing the exclusive use, for a limited time, of an image (aka, a “rights managed” photo) which avoids the possibility of the image ending up on another magazine cover. The Runner’s World strategy would be to sell more Runner’s World magazines, not Newsweeks or some other pub.

Some possibilities:

Runner’s World sold the image to Newsweek;

The two magazines have the same corporate owner;

Runner’s World didn’t read the fine print on the photographer’s contract, and he / she is getting some good mileage from the shot.

Her legs look odd either because of nylons or Photoshop. Not sure what your thoughts are on the use of the flag. Reagan was well known for caring about how a shot was staged–obviously professionally experienced with the art of image. If Palin aims to be Reaganesque she should also manage photo shoots for her political advantage.

dedalus on November 15, 2009 at 11:27 AM

The media and the Left (redundant) hate Sarah Palin for the same reasons that they hate Dick Cheney. Neither of them tolerates fools, and both have the courage of their convictions.

Andy Levy calls the two articles some of the laziest political writing he’s ever read

And the cover, deliciously enough, is of one piece with the article.

Too lazy to write, too lazy to shoot their own cover shot.

Is this a result of their downsizing? Are they that desperate to save money that they phone it all in?

This is the magazine equivalent of “Leno”.

The Left hates Palin because . . .

A. She’s not a lesbian like Janet Reno and Janet Napolitano
B. She has five children
C. She had five pregnancies and still looks damn good
D. She doesn’t wear Birkenstocks
E. She had the nerve to take her husband’s name
F. She wears skirts instead of pantsuits
G. She eats meat
H. She suppports the military
I. She did not attend an ivy league school
J. She likes men
K. She doesn’t believe in abortion
L. She believes in God
M. She has common sense
N. She doesn’t have a (D) after her name
O. She’s too “common”
P. She believes in small government
Q. She shoots guns
R. She’s shot an animal
S. She’s from Alaska
T. She fishes
U. She handles her own bait
V. She believes in fiscal responsibility
W. She supports drilling for oil
X. Her husband is good-looking
Y. She has a biblical name
Z. She’s patriotic

I’m probably more of an advocate for small government than even Sarah is. I do hope she improves her standing with independents and think she can, since she is more libertarian than some other GOP contenders. I don’t think this photo shoot was staged well for her. The fact that Newsweek used it for a hit piece on her seems to support that idea.
