The obligatory “Newsweek dumps all over Palin” post

posted at 4:50 pm on November 14, 2009 by Allahpundit

People on Twitter are nudging me to write about it, but what is there to say? The mainstream leftist take on Palin should be familiar to the point of utter banality by now; the only fresh element to Meacham’s and Thomas’s pieces is that they resist invoking Richard Hofstadter, which means they’re not even good drinking-game material. (That’s especially disappointing in the case of Thomas, who usually leaves no opportunity to demagogue the right untaken.) Andy Levy calls the two articles some of the laziest political writing he’s ever read, which is appropriate: Via Karl, compare this week’s Newsweek cover to this 1995 classic from Time magazine. We’ve been here before, folks. Many, many times.

Thomas:

Obama knows the long odds against a right-wing populist winning the presidency, no matter how good she looks in a skirt (or running clothes), brandishing a gun. He shouldn’t be too cocky, however, because the death of the center is ultimately a problem for him and the whole country. If the Palinistas seize the GOP, they probably cannot take the White House. But their brand of no-prisoners partisanship sure can tie up Congress…

Dwight Eisenhower governed in the 1950s by deftly uniting center and right, and Ronald Reagan did the same in the 1980s. They needed to be flexible to the point of gross expediency. To placate the far right, Ike shamefully refused to stand up for his friend and fellow statesman Gen. George Marshall, who was ludicrously attacked by Sen. Joe McCarthy as “soft” on communism. Reagan piously gave lip service to the right-wing social agenda while doing nothing to further it by legislation; he also chose George H.W. Bush to be his vice president and allowed the ultrapragmatic James A. Baker III to run the White House. The “Gipper” talked tough about the Russians–while doing more than any other president to foster détente. With a slyness that belied their smiling patriotism, Eisenhower and Reagan confused and occasionally exasperated their own followers. But it’s no coincidence the Eisenhower ’50s and Reagan ’80s were periods of unusual peace and prosperity.

“The ‘only good Republican is a dead Republican’ meme again,” sniffs Karl. As for Meacham:

We have been to this movie before, when the unreconstructed liberals of the fading New Deal–Great Society coalition obstinately refused to acknowledge the reality that America is a center-right nation, and that Democrats who wish to win national elections cannot run on the left. We are at our best as a country when there is something approaching a moderate space in politics. The middle way is not always the right way—far from it. But sometimes it is, and a wise nation should cultivate a political spirit that allows opponents to cooperate without fearing an automatic execution from their core supporters.

Meacham, at least, has been consistent on this point. Not so for many of his friends in establishment media, who’ll be clucking in agreement with this sentiment tomorrow morning despite not worrying terribly much last November that Democrats might use their huge majority in Congress to ram through a Great Society II agenda. Funny how the virtues of moderation seem to reveal themselves only when it’s conservatives who are behaving immoderately. (Which, these days, it isn’t.) I wonder, does the fact that independents are starting to break big towards the right affect the conventional wisdom on where, precisely, the moderate middle is located these days, or is it fixed for the time being at wherever our “pragmatist” post-partisan president happens to say it is?

If that’s not enough Newsweek for you, enjoy senior editor Michael Hirsh wringing his hands this morning on CBS over Palin’s “disturbing” vindictiveness. This comes on the same day, mind you, that news is breaking about how Anita Dunn’s fantastically petty attack on Fox News did indeed come from the top, likely ordered by a guy who’s been known to act out the fantasy deaths of his political enemies with a steak knife. Exit question: What’s the most cynical part of Newsweek’s attack? That they’d wait for the week when her book dropped to try to piggyback on the buzz? Or that they’d use that cheesecake photo from Runner’s World on the cover to try to sell it?

Went to the movies last night, and watching the trailers,
there is a new romantic comedy coming up,

and while the Left are claiming SarahCuda is irrevalent,
they have a wise-crack remark about SarahCuda,so um,ya,if
the Leftys aren’t worried, then why mention her name in this
upcoming movie!!

Sometimes you learn the hard way. Palin trusted that the McCain campaign wanted to win; she learned they said they wanted to win, but were more interested in following the PC rules of the DC crowd and media.

alexwest on November 14, 2009 at 7:07 PM

For sure. She played by the rules.

That’s obvious.

AnninCA on November 14, 2009 at 7:12 PM

I think where the government can make a difference is a lot wider than you probably think.

AnninCA on November 14, 2009 at 7:03 PM

Government has always created more problems than it’s solved, and without exception, their solutions always cost more than they predict … always.

Problems are best solved at the local level where people have more control of their government and that’s how the founders envisioned the nation. The federal government has clear, delineated responsibilties … giving them more power is what created the mess we have today. Runaway corruption by life long crooks.

Keep the power local, shrink the federal and state governments and you’d be surprised at what could be accomplished … for an infinitely cheaper price.

darwin on November 14, 2009 at 7:12 PM

I’m just happy that, for one week anyway, there is an Obama-free cover on the newsstands. I cannot stand the rat bastard traitor and it gets very old to constantly have to look at the filthy lying coward’s face when I go to buy food.

I’m just not interested in far-right anti-abortion or anti-all reform agendas.

I’m starting to question her agenda.

If it’s a kick-back to the religious right era, then I’ll probably end up acknowledging her personality….and moving as far and fast away as possible.

AnninCA on November 14, 2009 at 7:10 PM

Hahahahahaha … you obviously have no idea how she governed in Alaska. You also can’t find anything that would even imply she would try to impose that sort of agenda. You need to read her book.

Well, I think there’s a happy medium.

I really do think there’s HCR. But, Obama sure didn’t locate it.

I think a portable HC option enhances our free-enterprise system.

And we don’t even have to turn to a union rep.

It’s a great idea.

I want to see a workable, reasonable plan, too.

AnninCA on November 14, 2009 at 7:17 PM

Newsweek is, was and always will be a purveyor of putrid pig dung. It’s great fun to watch the left soil their underwear over Palin . . . they’re scared to death of her.

I think Sarah is actually moderate. But I have watched her choices in appearances. They have all revolved around far-right, Right-to-Life, etc.

Will she move past that?

I like her tremendously, but I can tell you, honestly, I’m never going to vote for any candidate that makes that their centerpiece.

I am done with voting for all Democrats over their position on this issue. But I personally will not trade that for someone who makes abortion their centerpiece on the right.

Not interested.

That doesn’t mean I don’t like her. If that’s her base, then fine.

She’ll be a very interesting footnote.

Funny how the virtues of moderation seem to reveal themselves only when it’s conservatives who are behaving immoderately.

True. The dirty little not-so-secret secret is that politically Palin is mainstream, while Obama is hopelessly a fringe moonbat. Just on politics alone, Palin would appeal to maybe 60% of the electorate; Obama’s agenda in its totality really appeals to about 20%. The state media knows this. Thus, Palin Must Be Destroyed!!!!

donh525 on November 14, 2009 at 7:23 PM

Yes, I really have always supported public option. What I want is a basic plan, major medical/hospitalization, that is portable.

No big benefits. Just the basic.

Cobra is too expensive.

I want a portable healthcare plan that really helps people bridge in real life.

I am totally alone in my idea, btw.

Nobody agrees with me. They are all way off into arguing for single-payer or way off into arguing that government is dangerous.

I have no illusion that anyone agrees with me.

It’s my own personal fantasy, I guess.

But I do think it’s the solution.

I think the bigger reason is that the state-run media doesn’t know what to do with Palin. They can censor out her agenda but they can’t get past the fact that her story resonates with ordinary Americans.

Put another way, which has more appeal to normal people 1) a PTA President, turned governor, turned national figure. or 2) a Chicago street thug who has never worked an honest day in his pathetic life and has gotten to high national office by pigmentation not accomplishment?

John McCain didn’t betray Palin. He had enough staff and supporters to ensure that she was suitably trashed in the media. McCain resented that he had to have her along to spark any sort of enthusiasm at campaign rallies. In the aftermath of his loss, he essentially stayed quiet and let his underlings attack while he refused to come to her support.

Bottom line, McCain might have been a war hero but he has turned into a bitter liberal politician with the same lack of character and ethics as the filthy lying coward in the White House.

As usual, it’s the Leftists and so called Independents who make the biggest issue out of abortion. It was the Democrats who insisted it be addressed in the Health Care bill, and they will use it as a wedge issue against the Conservative movement. But a call for Limited Government, Fiscal Responsibility and the defense of the Free Market system can unite America. Then, we can talk about the rest.

I’m sure some people dislike Palin for legitimate reasons, but too often the disdain many show for her appears to arise from media fabricated caricature of her or a disdain for her fans. Turn Palin into a your hero for anti-abortion.

America needs a heroine to be against abortion–it’s murder.

I can guarantee, she won’t be a national figure.

She already is a national figure. Too late!
BTW, the polls found that a change in national sentiment has already begun: for first time, over 50% of the population is opposed to abortion on demand.

If the anti-abortionists take her over, and she’s actually only shown up to two events, both pro-life, so it’s very fair for them to consider her a pro-life candidate….then, I’d say, Sarah will be a footnote.

Gov. Palin has always been a strong pro-Life candidate.
Her baby Trig is a living embodiment of that.
Where were you last November? Under your Obama rock?

This country is simply no longer interested in that debate.

AnninCA on November 14, 2009 at 7:42 PM

See my above comment about opinions shifting.
If we aren’t interested in that debate, why was Comrade Urkel babbling about it at Notre Dame University earlier this year?

Uh, no.

If professes to “like” Sarah Palin for her other Conservative views and effective executive record, but is willing to throw her under the bus because Palin is pro-Life, Ann has not “seen the light.”

Methinks she was lying all along.

They try to lure unsuspecting moderates to pick up their rag. Than trash her inside. I wonder if they thought about how many liberals won’t buy it because she’s on the cover.Stupid douches.

donh525 on November 14, 2009 at 8:24 PM

Yes, I really have always supported public option. What I want is a basic plan, major medical/hospitalization, that is portable.

AnninCA on November 14, 2009 at 7:30 PM

I guess you’re a supporter of permitting insurance providers to sell across state lines then.

BacaDog on November 14, 2009 at 8:26 PM

The liberal left looks like they are absolutely terrified. They haven’t done such an ad hominem hit piece on the cover in as long as I can remember. It is basically a middle-school cafeteria debate technique.

Read the cover headline:“HOW DO YOU SOLVE A PROBLEM LIKE SARAH?”

This tells me newsweek, (along with a ton of the liberal left news media), are scared s**tless of this lady. She’s a “one woman affront” to their socialist/marxist agenda. To these morons, she’s “a problem”. To a country that still sees itself as a center-right capitalist nation, she’s the biggest threat to their world, because she has a forum and she can drown out most of their rhetoric just by posting something on her facebook page. This country needs about another 100 “problems” just like Sarah.

Rovin on November 14, 2009 at 8:30 PM

One does not have to be a Palinista (Palin lover_) to see that there is an irrational hatred of Sarah Palin.

What did she do that warrants such hatred and venom?

Nothing that I can see deserves such animosity, save that 1) She is a woman, 2) She isn’t a left wing, elitist, blue blood idealogue, 3) She did not abort her baby, 4) She is known as a Christian, 5) She is considered to be a Conservative, 6) She speaks her mind, 7) She kills her food befor she eats it.

Liberalism is a mental disorder and irrational hatred, misogyny, hostility toward babies in the womb, and racism are a few of its symptoms.

William2006 on November 14, 2009 at 8:30 PM

I haven’t seen a woman referenced along with a “skirt” other than fiction from the Forties. The Left has a true disrespect for women.

Hening on November 14, 2009 at 8:32 PM

Here’s the bigger, bigger reason. The state-run media’s contempt for Palin is a reflection of their contempt for you and me, and him, and her, and those over there. Simple as that.

ddrintn on November 14, 2009 at 7:36 PM

You got that right! Anyone who doubts that should look up the Institute for Policy Studies. They seem to be calling the shots from what I’ve seen, and ddrintn hit the nail on the head…attacking Palin is attacking the Repubulican populus…us average working people. Do a little research on this Communist think tank, and you’ll see it.

It looks like the MSM is waging an all out war on Palin this week.

I fully expect Tina Fey to make an appearance on SNL to try and hammer it home.

commodore on November 14, 2009 at 8:42 PM

I’d say the best thing that Newsweek could have done was use the Runner’s World photo. It needed wider circulation.

Oh wait, Runner’s World might have a larger circulation at this point.

That Palin issue was their best seller, and the online activity so high it crashed their servers for the first time ever!

The article was incredibly popular. And a good one.

gary4205 on November 14, 2009 at 8:43 PM

Just the simple fact that they are quacking in their boots and scared to death of her is reason enough to elect her to something. Hell, make her the Prime Minister of FNC.

Griz on November 14, 2009 at 8:46 PM

This is long…but if you don’t want to hear the whole thing start at 53:00. The Progressives, not the Democrats are running this country. Union are sending this group big bucks and who is it they relate to us? Palin, that is why they will continue attacking her and us.

What do you expect from a magazine led by Jon Meacham. The man literally believes he is intellectually gifted and an authority on many subjects including (but not limited to) religion and politics.

I remember watching slow witted Meacham on Meet the Press hosted by Tim Russert (an actual journalist). L-O_S-E-R.
