The obligatory “Newsweek dumps all over Palin” post

posted at 4:50 pm on November 14, 2009 by Allahpundit

People on Twitter are nudging me to write about it, but what is there to say? The mainstream leftist take on Palin should be familiar to the point of utter banality by now; the only fresh element to Meacham’s and Thomas’s pieces is that they resist invoking Richard Hofstadter, which means they’re not even good drinking-game material. (That’s especially disappointing in the case of Thomas, who usually leaves no opportunity to demagogue the right untaken.) Andy Levy calls the two articles some of the laziest political writing he’s ever read, which is appropriate: Via Karl, compare this week’s Newsweek cover to this 1995 classic from Time magazine. We’ve been here before, folks. Many, many times.

Thomas:

Obama knows the long odds against a right-wing populist winning the presidency, no matter how good she looks in a skirt (or running clothes), brandishing a gun. He shouldn’t be too cocky, however, because the death of the center is ultimately a problem for him and the whole country. If the Palinistas seize the GOP, they probably cannot take the White House. But their brand of no-prisoners partisanship sure can tie up Congress…

Dwight Eisenhower governed in the 1950s by deftly uniting center and right, and Ronald Reagan did the same in the 1980s. They needed to be flexible to the point of gross expediency. To placate the far right, Ike shamefully refused to stand up for his friend and fellow statesman Gen. George Marshall, who was ludicrously attacked by Sen. Joe McCarthy as “soft” on communism. Reagan piously gave lip service to the right-wing social agenda while doing nothing to further it by legislation; he also chose George H.W. Bush to be his vice president and allowed the ultrapragmatic James A. Baker III to run the White House. The “Gipper” talked tough about the Russians–while doing more than any other president to foster détente. With a slyness that belied their smiling patriotism, Eisenhower and Reagan confused and occasionally exasperated their own followers. But it’s no coincidence the Eisenhower ’50s and Reagan ’80s were periods of unusual peace and prosperity.

“The ‘only good Republican is a dead Republican’ meme again,” sniffs Karl. As for Meacham:

We have been to this movie before, when the unreconstructed liberals of the fading New Deal–Great Society coalition obstinately refused to acknowledge the reality that America is a center-right nation, and that Democrats who wish to win national elections cannot run on the left. We are at our best as a country when there is something approaching a moderate space in politics. The middle way is not always the right way—far from it. But sometimes it is, and a wise nation should cultivate a political spirit that allows opponents to cooperate without fearing an automatic execution from their core supporters.

Meacham, at least, has been consistent on this point. Not so for many of his friends in establishment media, who’ll be clucking in agreement with this sentiment tomorrow morning despite not worrying terribly much last November that Democrats might use their huge majority in Congress to ram through a Great Society II agenda. Funny how the virtues of moderation seem to reveal themselves only when it’s conservatives who are behaving immoderately. (Which, these days, it isn’t.) I wonder, does the fact that independents are starting to break big towards the right affect the conventional wisdom on where, precisely, the moderate middle is located these days, or is it fixed for the time being at wherever our “pragmatist” post-partisan president happens to say it is?

If that’s not enough Newsweek for you, enjoy senior editor Michael Hirsh wringing his hands this morning on CBS over Palin’s “disturbing” vindictiveness. This comes on the same day, mind you, that news is breaking about how Anita Dunn’s fantastically petty attack on Fox News did indeed come from the top, likely ordered by a guy who’s been known to act out the fantasy deaths of his political enemies with a steak knife. Exit question: What’s the most cynical part of Newsweek’s attack? That they’d wait for the week when her book dropped to try to piggyback on the buzz? Or that they’d use that cheesecake photo from Runner’s World on the cover to try to sell it?

What’s the most cynical part of Newsweek’s attack? That they’d wait for the week when her book dropped to try to piggyback on the buzz? Or that they’d use that cheesecake photo from Runner’s World on the cover to try to sell it?

Do I have to choose?

Wethal on November 14, 2009 at 4:56 PM

I’d say the best thing that Newsweek could have done was use the Runner’s World photo. It needed wider circulation.

Oh wait, Runner’s World might have a larger circulation at this point.

Or that they’d use that cheesecake photo from Runner’s World on the cover to try to sell it?

That one. They couldn’t resist it – even though the sheer vitality and openness of Palin contradicts the headline and the sub-head to the point of cognitive dissonance. To the editor, it’s balance, but it comes across as schizophrenia, too, and serves to underline just how demented and inhumane their approach is. They’re calling an American politician a clear and present danger to everyone - merely for existing.

CK MacLeod on November 14, 2009 at 4:58 PM

Whatever. I just read another leaked tidbit. I am officially beside myself here. It’s like waiting for Harry Potter books! *haha

She took BACK her remark about Hillary whining about the bias in the press. Said, “I should have walked a mile in her shoes.”

It’s official. Whether she’s presidential material or not, throws her hat in the ring or not, agrees with me or not on a few key issues…..I sure do like this gal.

It’s a breath of fresh air. It’s like Annie Oakley goes to Washington.

And she’s just darn fun!

AnninCA on November 14, 2009 at 4:58 PM

Okay, Okay, theydidn’t say she was dangerous but that she was bad news for America. Same thing really. The only person she is bad news for is Obama.

sandee on November 14, 2009 at 4:58 PM

Palin will sell more books this week than Newsweek has readers.

Joke is on them.

sandee on November 14, 2009 at 5:01 PM

I think the timing is to counter the success of the book, and the photo use is to claim her appeal is based on appearance.

As I said in the other thread, it’s not Palin they oppose so much as the people or forces she stands for.

Substitute Reagan for Palin or Gingrich for Palin and you’ll get the same result.

Palin – like Reagan – represents for liberal elite opinion everything they dislike about America. Its, from their view, small town Babbitry, the American flag on the front porch, the religiosity, the nationalism.

That’s what the liberal elite opposes. Palin is the current personification of those forces. Thirty years ago it was Reagan. Thirty years from now it’ll be someone else.

Meacham and Thomas et al. had a chance to support that center-right candidate they believe represents America: John McCain. But they abandoned him and swoon over the most liberal/leftist person we’ve ever had in the White House.

People who support an Obama over a McCain are not the people I take seriously when they lecture us about the center and pragmatism.

No I don’t.

SteveMG on November 14, 2009 at 5:04 PM

I see Palin continues to live, rent-free, inside the heads of the left and MSM.

AWESOME!!!

RedNewEnglander on November 14, 2009 at 5:04 PM

I am long past cynicism or being amazed at the double standard. What I would really like, is to be in the room when they take a seemingly mundane part of life of a conservative and twist and turn it into a piece like those noted. There is some serious pretzel work going on when you can make either Gov. Palin or Rush Limbaugh into a threat on the nation. Especially when you consider Ft. Hood and the the plots disrupted since 9/11/01.

Cindy Munford on November 14, 2009 at 5:04 PM

Newsweek has already declared that they have given up on objectivity, so what would anyone expect.

J_Crater on November 14, 2009 at 5:05 PM

BuckeyeSam on November 14, 2009 at 5:05 PM

My theory to why the left hates Sarah Palin is that she did everything “wrong” and still ended up on top.

She went to a hodgepodge of colleges, got married pretty young, and had a bunch of kids. Then the bitch had the audacity to have ANOTHER kid when she was in a position of power. We all know that the only acceptable answer there for a leftist was abortion.

It reminds them of all the lonely nights they spent with their cats while on their quest for middle management.

Vera on November 14, 2009 at 5:05 PM

Schmidt is fighting back. I frankly believe Sarah. What she’s saying he did lines up with what actually happened.

His version isn’t lining up with reality.

AnninCA on November 14, 2009 at 5:05 PM

Anyway, what’s the saying … Any publicity is good publicity?

darwin on November 14, 2009 at 5:07 PM

Or that they’d use that cheesecake photo from Runner’s World on the cover to try to sell it?

Well, they considered a cheesecake photo of Shea-Porter, but that was vetoed by the editors — neither one of their remaining two readers goes in for that sort of thing.

A magazine, fast becoming irrelevant, if it’s not already there. Does anyone even bother reading this clap trap? I know doctors offices always have them lying around. Good thing I take a book with me.

Newsweak is fast going down the toilet, so it will do anything, and I’m pretty sure that’s ANYTHING to remain above water.

GnuBreed on November 14, 2009 at 5:08 PM

What I hope is that she is able to seize control of the narrative now. Her narrative, I mean, obviously she’s been successful at commenting on ‘death panels’, etc.

But with this book, and the once over of all the campaign and mistakes associated with Schmidt, Wallace, McCain, etc, she can move on and make the history history.

Spirit of 1776 on November 14, 2009 at 5:09 PM

For Newsweek, it was either run with this cover, or let Hugh Hefner take over the mag…

Look, everyone out there is going to try to get their $1.15 minutes of fame off of Sarah’s run-a-way bestseller. No matter how low the need to go.

GoldenEagle4444 on November 14, 2009 at 5:25 PM

or did they mean to compliment her?

They get it. Everyone does. It’s a compliment. Usually losing VP’s slink off and are doomed to bit roles in life.

It’s clear that she has already executed what she said she’d do. She wanted to address the media in this country. That’s an issue that bothers BOTH sides. We all can see the problem clearly. It’s terribly slippery right now. And that’s not good for the country.

A press that runs off of ET style is fun for me and other bloggers, but it’s not informative or smart for the country.

She said she wanted to find a different path to influence the country and continue with her message. It’s absolutely clear she’s done just that. Who else is using Facebook and actually making that format work?

Sarah is a formidible political voice in this country, and the election predictions and/or future of her political career do not change that.

She is, by definition, a force to be reckoned with.

But, if they were thinking it through, which I doubt, that song is sung by the nuns. Maria isn’t destined to be a nun. Maybe they’re hoping Sarah will get out of politics like Maria left the convent.

Either way, it’s a poor choice of headline for their agenda, because Maria is beloved, not scorned as they would wish.

Plus, the initial responses to her book aren’t relevant. It’s a bit like Obama’s misstep in the election, when he said people are “clinging to guns and religion.” The initial response of people is often more forgiving than it should be, frankly. PA still gave him their vote. So did Ohio and other Appalacian states.

However, it builds up. People don’t forget. Now, they see he really did mean that insult. He went after Fox. He uses insults about THEM at teaparties to push his Democrats.

It’s no longer excuseable. He does see them as ignorant and not worthy of being heard.

His words about no Red or Blue states ring hollow now.

It’s the same thing with Sarah. The initial response may sound negative, but I think people are watching carefully. And they are not going to be impressed by the latest left attack on her.

They sympathize with her. More important, they see the press bias.

I trust people to sort it out.

She wore a white dress at the D-Day ceremony in Normandy and looked silly too. There is the classic picture of Michelle scowling at the impeccably dressed (in black for such a solemn ceremony) Mrs. Sarkozy (Carla Bruni).

What some on the left, as well as most “moderates”, don’t understand is that the middle are fiscal Conservatives who favor a strong defense. After 4 years of far-left radicalism on social issues, the middle will vote with the right.

I bet Rahm Emanuel runs off to the bathroom with his copy for some special “private time” with Sarah.

Sarah needs to continue to speak nicely about Levi. His mom is a disaster. His life is a trainwreck.

Nice people don’t pile on when it’s this obvious.

He’s too young. He gets to bat at her.
