The obligatory “Newsweek dumps all over Palin” post

posted at 4:50 pm on November 14, 2009 by Allahpundit

People on Twitter are nudging me to write about it, but what is there to say? The mainstream leftist take on Palin should be familiar to the point of utter banality by now; the only fresh element to Meacham’s and Thomas’s pieces is that they resist invoking Richard Hofstadter, which means they’re not even good drinking-game material. (That’s especially disappointing in the case of Thomas, who usually leaves no opportunity to demagogue the right untaken.) Andy Levy calls the two articles some of the laziest political writing he’s ever read, which is appropriate: Via Karl, compare this week’s Newsweek cover to this 1995 classic from Time magazine. We’ve been here before, folks. Many, many times.

Thomas:

Obama knows the long odds against a right-wing populist winning the presidency, no matter how good she looks in a skirt (or running clothes), brandishing a gun. He shouldn’t be too cocky, however, because the death of the center is ultimately a problem for him and the whole country. If the Palinistas seize the GOP, they probably cannot take the White House. But their brand of no-prisoners partisanship sure can tie up Congress…

Dwight Eisenhower governed in the 1950s by deftly uniting center and right, and Ronald Reagan did the same in the 1980s. They needed to be flexible to the point of gross expediency. To placate the far right, Ike shamefully refused to stand up for his friend and fellow statesman Gen. George Marshall, who was ludicrously attacked by Sen. Joe McCarthy as “soft” on communism. Reagan piously gave lip service to the right-wing social agenda while doing nothing to further it by legislation; he also chose George H.W. Bush to be his vice president and allowed the ultrapragmatic James A. Baker III to run the White House. The “Gipper” talked tough about the Russians–while doing more than any other president to foster détente. With a slyness that belied their smiling patriotism, Eisenhower and Reagan confused and occasionally exasperated their own followers. But it’s no coincidence the Eisenhower ’50s and Reagan ’80s were periods of unusual peace and prosperity.

“The ‘only good Republican is a dead Republican’ meme again,” sniffs Karl. As for Meacham:

We have been to this movie before, when the unreconstructed liberals of the fading New Deal–Great Society coalition obstinately refused to acknowledge the reality that America is a center-right nation, and that Democrats who wish to win national elections cannot run on the left. We are at our best as a country when there is something approaching a moderate space in politics. The middle way is not always the right way—far from it. But sometimes it is, and a wise nation should cultivate a political spirit that allows opponents to cooperate without fearing an automatic execution from their core supporters.

Meacham, at least, has been consistent on this point. Not so for many of his friends in establishment media, who’ll be clucking in agreement with this sentiment tomorrow morning despite not worrying terribly much last November that Democrats might use their huge majority in Congress to ram through a Great Society II agenda. Funny how the virtues of moderation seem to reveal themselves only when it’s conservatives who are behaving immoderately. (Which, these days, it isn’t.) I wonder, does the fact that independents are starting to break big towards the right affect the conventional wisdom on where, precisely, the moderate middle is located these days, or is it fixed for the time being at wherever our “pragmatist” post-partisan president happens to say it is?

If that’s not enough Newsweek for you, enjoy senior editor Michael Hirsh wringing his hands this morning on CBS over Palin’s “disturbing” vindictiveness. This comes on the same day, mind you, that news is breaking about how Anita Dunn’s fantastically petty attack on Fox News did indeed come from the top, likely ordered by a guy who’s been known to act out the fantasy deaths of his political enemies with a steak knife. Exit question: What’s the most cynical part of Newsweek’s attack? That they’d wait for the week when her book dropped to try to piggyback on the buzz? Or that they’d use that cheesecake photo from Runner’s World on the cover to try to sell it?

So much hype for a book that is practically being given away on amazon. The angry white losers haven’t had anything to celebrate for a long, long time. This is a big deal for them i guess.

The fact that Newsweek used it for a hit piece on her seems to support that idea.

What a surprise.
They underestimate Governor Palin and overestimate NObama at their own peril.

Evan Thomas is almost as much of a left-wing shill / cheerleader as E.J. Dionne.

A few years from now, little children will be saying “Daddy, what was Newsweek”?

Newsweek revamped its design to a very strange format as a part of a Hail Mary attempt to stay in business.

It won’t work, though, and Newsweek has once again laid off more staff.

As much as I appreciate the hot pic of Sarah on the cover, I wouldn’t pay $5.00 to read that liberal tripe.

Forget about it.

Robert Samuelson is the only decent writer Newsweek has on its staff.

Meacham’s history is telling. He became National Affairs Editor at Newsweek nearly 15 years ago, later moving up to managing editor. He steered the formerly center-left news magazine in a sharply leftward direction.

Oh, and guess which direction their circulation has been going ever since?

The ignorance of the Left is always stunning, the way they cast Reagan as hypocritical for talking tough on Communism while lobbying for detente is either wilful lies or political naivety. Reagan’s method was to vilify the Soviets in the public square to show he wasn’t afraid of them while offering a way out of the growing pressure upon them behind the scenes. It was effective strategy that worked much better than soft words in public.

I am waiting for some breathless Reporter to hold up a receipt for a Product and say “She lies. She said She paid 7.87 and this shows she clearly paid 7.78. How can you trust someone who makes such a glaring error ?” Its not like she was off by 2 trillion dollars or something.

The Sheer mindless panic of these Elitist snobs is disgusting to watch as they look down their noses and pronounce an American Citizen who didn’t go to a fancy school and get a prestigious degree to hang on a wall as not worthy enough for their Government. Always amazing to see Reagan quoted by Newsweek as an example of balance and moderation. That wasn’t exactly their take when he was still politically active.

These yahoos haven’t grasped yet that Reagan was always more in the mainstream than they ever were, and that Palin probably doesn’t have a single position on the issues that could fairly be described as radical.

I hope in her upcoming interviews or her campaign Sarah says:

“Ya know _____, I just wish the media would have spent 1/3 the time vetting Presidente Pinnochio, his Czars, his policy positions and his past associations as they have publishing lies and filth about me and my entire family. _____, I have been thouroly vetted, the lyin presidente has not and the American people are suffering as a result.”

Sarah is uniquely qualified to take on Pinnochio and the lefty America haters know it!

dhunter on November 15, 2009 at 5:23 PM

I mean really, think about how the crr6′s, simple simons and bleeds blue types have to come here, day after day.

They have absolutely nothing to point to as evidence of their own value or worth (not unlike the current administration of the current Nobel Peace Prize recipient) so here they are -with their denouncements.

And so it is with Newsweek, and MSNBC, and TIME, and the N.Y. Times etc.. All the bastions of the marginally brighter crr6s, simple simons, bleeds blues. They tried running ObaMao’s picture on their respective topsheets endlessly; until the utter lack of any accomplishment to scribble about between the covers became a bit embarassing. Although, Michelle does have great guns.

And so they must endlessly denounce the opposition. To do that you need a face: Sarah. They think they have an easy target. The problem is they’re far too obtuse to get a tangent on the fact that they are giving her a brand equal to the One’s. That, and the fact that the only substance required of her at this point is a deft counter-punch -which she keeps effortlessly demonstrating. And, if she so chooses, she can simply power-broker that brand recognition to her chosen candidate(s) anytime in the future.

Thanks, guys!

Do you remember when most of us were introduced to Sarah!

The 2008 Republican National Convention .
She made her first impression………….

Sarah Palin’s big moment in St Paul last night. The young governor of Alaska issued a rallying cry to the conservative Republican base that will go down in the annals of the culture wars as one of the most energising opening salvos of recent times.
I was just your average hockey mom, and signed up for the PTA … I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a “community organizer,” except … ROFLOL

And the she debated Joe Biden…

Remember?

To you surprised, scared, hateful, wetting in your bed liberals ……………

***BEHOLD*** The Second Coming of SARAH PALIN!!!
No handlers, just an ordinary citizen.

And it’s going to be 24/7 Sara Palin. And it ain’t going to STOP!!!

She was embarrassing. She’s still embarrassing. She quit after 1/2 a term in office, she can’t even write her own book (it was ghost written by Lynn Vincent). She’s a neocon who talks like she cares about the Constitution and cares about fiscal conservatism. George W. Bush talked that way too when he was running for office in 2000 and 2004. How’d that work out for us? He shredded the Constitution with The Patriot Act, grew the federal government like a Democrat, and ran up deficits that we can only repay if we crank up the printing presses to 11. Some conservative he was.

You say she gives you a “thrill up your leg” but maybe you should quit thinking with that leg and start looking for a real conservative instead of yet another one that kisses up to the neocons and AIPAC.

Ask a kid today, or even a grownup. The only place you see Newsweek is doctor’s office waiting rooms, and even there, it’s being pushed aside by outdoors, sports, people, and other mags.

The SNL skits made it into the public consciousness. But a lot of the dirt thrown up by the media is only being consumed by news junkies and die-hard partisans. We get mad about it, the left gets titillated by it, and the average voter never notices.

Sen. McConnell had a good observation on this Sunday. Wallace asked if the GOP was in trouble because of Palin and conservative attempts to take over the party. He said it showed that more and more people believe that it’s worth running for GOP offices, and that had to be good for the party.

I think the “old white guys” will each deal with the conservative shift in the party in their own way. The some will leave, some will try to join the movement, and lots of GOP lawmakers will quietly thank God for the chance to finally follow their conscience.

DrMagnolias on November 16, 2009 at 11:09 AM

How do you solve a problem like Sarah Palin?

Listen to her. She knows how to solve lots of problems. There’s only one problem she hasn’t solved yet–the media.

We’ve had other Governors resign their office under far more scandalous circumstances, such as Jim McGreevy and Eliot Spitzer, and Mark Sanford probably won’t be far behind.

Yet the left-wing press continues to bash Sarah Palin, while Spitzer, McGreevy, and Sanford have dropped off the radar screen–why? Because they know that, if Sarah Palin became more media-savvy and got her message out clearly without having to rebut personal attacks, her ideas would catch on with the general public (including independents) and she would be unstoppable. If the left-wing press really believed she was a dimwit or a right-wing nut, they would ignore her. They bash her now because they are AFRAID of her!

Reagan piously gave lip service to the right-wing social agenda while doing nothing to further it by legislation;

Reagan did what he could. The House was controlled by Democrats throughout Reagan’s two terms, and the social agenda is controlled by the Supreme Court, and Reagan tried to name Robert Bork to the Court.

The “Gipper” talked tough about the Russians–while doing more than any other president to foster détente.

Reagan talked tough to the Soviet leaders during his first term to force them to back down. Up through 1983, he was dealing with hard-liners Brezhnev and Andropov, and he decided to end the butt-kissing of the Carter years. He also talked tough with Gorbachev early on, and walked out of talks with him in Reykjavik, but when Gorbachev backed off and made concessions, Reagan was brought back to the bargaining table. Reagan’s motto was “peace through strength”, and he exemplified it perfectly. If you’re the strongest kid on the block, no one wants to mess with you, and that’s the best way to ensure peace.

Unfortunately, the lefties at Snooze-weak haven’t figured that out, 20 years after Reagan left office.

he also chose George H.W. Bush to be his vice president and allowed the ultrapragmatic James A. Baker III to run the White House. The “Gipper” talked tough about the Russians–while doing more than any other president to foster détente.

No, it shows that “independent” does not mean “moderate” or “centrist”. Hoffman is an independent, as he is not a Republican or Democrat. So is Bernie Sanders.

The break you describe is happening because Republicans are leaving the party in search of an option that will satiate the far-right cravings fueled by talk radio and such. This does not significantly affect where the center is. It just means that some races that could be won by Republicans will be won by Democrats since Republican votes will be drained off by far-right third party (i.e., “independent”) challengers.

Wow, it’s Sarah news 24-7 elsewhere. Her line-up this week is hot, hot, hot. And then a big bustour to small-town America.

I thought she was smart to whet people’s appetite by staying off the interview circuit.

Looks like I was right!

Fun stuff, eh?

Palin supporters refute AP article, point by point.

It’s a really good read.

Check it out on Conservatives4Palin blog.

What I want to know is why that Runners World photo in not in my Sarah Palin calendar?

Dasher on November 16, 2009 at 1:59 PM

Gee, and the lib media ate up Obummer in a swim suit surfing in Hawaii. I thought Sarah’s picture was in better taste. Not photo shopped either, to make certain improvements.

Kissmygrits on November 16, 2009 at 2:02 PM

Hmmmm. This post is still up… Does that have anything to do with the Newsweek cover???

I…. wonder…..

xax on November 16, 2009 at 2:44 PM

Does Newsweek think a similar picture of Michelle Obama flay across barcode scanners like this one will?

Visualize MyBelle in a runners outfit striking a cutesy pose next to an American flag…

CORRECTION: Visualize MyBelle in a runners outfit striking a cutesy pose next to an American flag

2nd CORRECTION: Visualize MyBelle in a runners outfit striking a cutesy pose next to an American flag

There. Listen to those cash registers, baby! I expect the White House will be demanding said tribute to “The Gun Show” post haste.

But it’s no coincidence the Eisenhower ’50s and Reagan ’80s were periods of unusual peace and prosperity.

Shows you how much they hate SP, according to heretofore lib view, the ’80s were a time of rising homlessness and a blind eye towards AIDS.

I.M. Shatner on November 16, 2009 at 5:16 PM

No, because Michelle Obama’s ass is far too large.

I have a message for Juan McShame.
John,

Your campaign racked up legal costs in Alaska and said repeatedly it would pay for them. When the bill was submitted, it was turned down after the election. Your campaign said it would have paid if you had won.

Real men, gentlemen, and officers are men of their word. What are you?

Blacksmith8 on November 16, 2009 at 9:07 PM

Idiots will believe Palin actually posed like that for the cover of Newsweek.

redslippers on November 16, 2009 at 10:13 PM

The choice of photo for the cover of this week’s Newsweek is unfortunate. When it comes to Sarah Palin, this “news” magazine has relished focusing on the irrelevant rather than the relevant. The Runner’s World magazine one-page profile for which this photo was taken was all about health and fitness – a subject to which I am devoted and which is critically important to this nation. The out-of-context Newsweek approach is sexist and oh-so-expected by now. If anyone can learn anything from it: it shows why you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, gender, or color of skin. The media will do anything to draw attention – even if out of context.

So much hype for a book that is practically being given away on amazon. The angry white losers haven’t had anything to celebrate for a long, long time. This is a big deal for them i guess.

simplesimon on November 15, 2009 at 1:14 PM

In simplesimon’s attempt to belittle others, he instead belittles himself, and demonstrates his own bigotry.

What the hell is a “neocon?” This is a term that I only ever hear from leftists and I’ve never ever actually been able to find a real meaning for the word. It seems to be a leftist nothing-word. A term designed to trigger a emotional response, but otherwise devoid of meaning.

leereyno on November 16, 2009 at 8:17 AM

Leereyno – are you serious? Google Neoconservatism and you will see that it has been around for a few decades now and Irving Kristol, the father of neoconservatism, was hardly a liberal. Neocon is not a derogatory word – it’s a political philosophy.

By the way, Sarah looks very beautiful on that magazine cover.

LODGE4 on November 17, 2009 at 8:07 AM

Wow, six pages of comments, and only one commenter has the least bit of discomfort with Palin standing next to a flag tossed like a beach towel over a bar stool and using it as an elbow rest.

Hey, it’s not touching the ground!

skylark on November 17, 2009 at 1:52 PM

More Sarah respecting the flag? Sure!
