Quotes of the day
posted at 9:30 pm on November 14, 2009 by Allahpundit
“All in all, Ms. Palin emerges from ‘Going Rogue’ as an eager player in the blame game, thoroughly ungrateful toward the McCain campaign for putting her on the national stage. As for the McCain campaign, it often feels like a desperate and cynical operation, willing to make a risky Hail Mary pass in order to try to score a tactical win, instead of making a considered judgment as to who might be genuinely qualified to sit a heartbeat away from the Oval Office…
“Yet, Mr. McCain’s astonishing decision to pick someone with so little experience (less than two years as the governor of Alaska, and before that, two terms as mayor of Wasilla, a town with fewer than 7,000 residents) as his running mate and Ms. Palin’s own surprisingly nonchalant reaction to Mr. McCain’s initial phone call about the vice president’s slot (she writes that it felt “like a natural progression”) underscore just how alarmingly expertise is discounted — or equated with elitism — in our increasingly democratized era, and just how thoroughly colorful personal narratives overshadow policy arguments and actual knowledge.”
***
“The Palin problem, then, might be that she cynically incites a crowd that she has no real intention of pleasing. If she were ever to get herself to the nation’s capital, the teabaggers would be just as much on the outside as they are now, and would simply have been the instruments that helped get her elected. In my own not-all-that-humble opinion, duping the hicks is a degree or two worse than condescending to them. It’s also much more dangerous, because it meanwhile involves giving a sort of respectability to ideas that were discredited when William Jennings Bryan was last on the stump. The Weekly Standard (itself not exactly a prairie-based publication) might want to think twice before flirting with popular delusions and resentments that are as impossible to satisfy as the demand for a silver standard or a ban on the teaching of Darwin, and are for that very reason hard to tamp down. Many of Palin’s admirers seem to expect that, on receipt of the Republican Party nomination, she would immediately embark on a crusade against Wall Street and the banks. This notion is stupid to much the same degree that it is irresponsible…
“Once again, one is compelled to ask which would be worse: a Sarah Palin who really meant what she merely seemed to say, or a Sarah Palin who would say anything at all for a cheap burst of applause?”

Who says she doesn’t believe in evolution or that part of it limited to trying to explain how the characteristics of species change over time and can sprout a new species?
Her father was a science teacher afterall.
I don’t understand why Hitchens believes that when a person believes in God, that they also can’t possibly believe in truths that we see from science.

I remember when the media started using this term, Laura Ingraham had no clue what it meant either. During a break, one of her producers had to tell her, and she was horrified that members of the MSM were intentionally calling Americans this derogatory term.
Worse, my 76-year old mom asked me what it meant. I had to use props to show her; teabags and a wide-mouth cup.

As the months and years go by, you will start seeing one, then two, then four candidates emerge from Tea Party efforts. They will be there, they will challenge the incumbents–local elections, city councils, county supervisors, state houses, state senates, congressional seats and it will come…it’ll hit the beach and the liberal guilds will show fissures, they already have. Those fissures will begin to fracture, be forced open, and those ideas will begin to be crushed–the liberal fantasies revealed, as the once silent majority regains its footing and starts stompin’ mud holes in governments across this land.
it’s happening right in front of you….

If you look up ‘erratic’ in the dictionary, you see a photo of Hitchens: Brilliant on some areas, like the jihadist threat to Europe, but a obscurantist crank on others ( like populist conservatives and their message )
Hitchens is one of those quirky Limey quasi-intellectuals who looks down on nearly everyone. He’s good in small doses only……..

I just don’t get where people get the idea that Palin is such an avid bible thumper. I don’t get that impression at all. She also isn’t Catholic as far as I know. She might have her own religious beliefs and hold them strongly, but I don’t get the impression that she wants to force them on other people the way a lot of “evangelicals” do. She might be religious, but she is no evangelist.

Breaking News!
The FBI has been called in to investigate alleged Alaska state funds misdirected by State Senator Jay Ramras with a large no-bids contract to handle all lemonade service for the Senate to Piper Palin, daughter of notorious rogue Sarah Palin. An attempt was made by Machiavellian Miss Piper to kickback some obscene lemonade profits via a piggybank dropoff outside Ramras’s Senate office door.
The case blew up totally when the young Rezko wanna-be’s ethics crusader mother inadvertently discovered the piggybank of her daughter outside the Senator’s door and innocently (sure) turned it in to the Senate Ethics Committee who found in the piggy the perfect penmanship of Piper pushing profound profits with the words: “Thanks Mr. Ramras for helping me.”
UPDATE: Piper Palin’s defense attorney Thomas Flein is very close to getting a good plea-bargain after it was discovered that the Senate Ethics Committee broke the piggy bank with the gavel of the State Supreme Court Justice WITHOUT getting a court order. It appears that the little crony-capitalist gets off with only 10 days detention. Senator Ramras is taking the brunt of the investigation now, and he still can’t find a wife.

Christopher Hitchens is one of five opinion columnists I read without fail because their opinions are always worth reading as (usually) well-informed and well-stated. The others are Charles Krauthammer, Mark Steyn, Camille Paglia and Fouad Ajami. I disagree with Hitch and Krauthammer and agree with Steyn and Paglia about Governor Palin.
Hitch is a somewhat endearing elitist snob whose rather large blind spot is the importance of faith to most of the voting population of these United States. I don’t begrudge him his lack of faith, but his contempt for believers gets old over time, especially since he never seems to appreciate that there are a goodly number who truly appreciate him or realize that, by slamming someone with whom they share their faith, in a manner that denigrates their faith, he truly bites the very hands that feed him.
Where would the oppressed people for whom he so often advocates be without the support of American evangelicals, fascist neanderthals all? In retrospect, who was more likely to have supported intervention on behalf of his beloved Kurds against Saddam, a President Obama or a President Palin? A President Palin, of course. Why? In large part because of a world view/moral compass shaped by her faith. By seeing only ignorance, Hitch misses completely the character, the forthrightness of Governor Palin. I’m pretty sure he thought the same of President Bush in 2000, but he came to begrudgingly appreciate the same characteristics.
Governor Palin embarks this week on an attempt to reintroduce herself to the American people on her own terms. It requires that she address or explain much of what occurred to the detriment of her image in the last campaign. Writers like the Times hack will characterize her explanations as whining or pay back, and completely ignore their substance or anything that portrays her in a favorable light. Fortunately, her book will stand or fall on its own. Her interviews will either dispel or reaffirm the Couric caricature. My bet is that the American people will view her more favorably with the coming of the new year, but will withhold judgment until they see her on the hustings again. By that time, this Administration and its allies in Congress will have turned most independents against the Democrats and they will be looking for a Republican who truly seems to understand their fears and frustrations. I think that Republican will be Sarah Palin.
Mongo Mere Pawn on November 14, 2009 at 11:55 PM
Let me paraphrase every MSM review:
“I hated Palin before the book, and I still hate her. I read the book for things to use against her and here’s what I found.”
