Quotes of the day
posted at 9:30 pm on November 14, 2009 by Allahpundit
“All in all, Ms. Palin emerges from ‘Going Rogue’ as an eager player in the blame game, thoroughly ungrateful toward the McCain campaign for putting her on the national stage. As for the McCain campaign, it often feels like a desperate and cynical operation, willing to make a risky Hail Mary pass in order to try to score a tactical win, instead of making a considered judgment as to who might be genuinely qualified to sit a heartbeat away from the Oval Office…
“Yet, Mr. McCain’s astonishing decision to pick someone with so little experience (less than two years as the governor of Alaska, and before that, two terms as mayor of Wasilla, a town with fewer than 7,000 residents) as his running mate and Ms. Palin’s own surprisingly nonchalant reaction to Mr. McCain’s initial phone call about the vice president’s slot (she writes that it felt “like a natural progression”) underscore just how alarmingly expertise is discounted — or equated with elitism — in our increasingly democratized era, and just how thoroughly colorful personal narratives overshadow policy arguments and actual knowledge.”
***
“The Palin problem, then, might be that she cynically incites a crowd that she has no real intention of pleasing. If she were ever to get herself to the nation’s capital, the teabaggers would be just as much on the outside as they are now, and would simply have been the instruments that helped get her elected. In my own not-all-that-humble opinion, duping the hicks is a degree or two worse than condescending to them. It’s also much more dangerous, because it meanwhile involves giving a sort of respectability to ideas that were discredited when William Jennings Bryan was last on the stump. The Weekly Standard (itself not exactly a prairie-based publication) might want to think twice before flirting with popular delusions and resentments that are as impossible to satisfy as the demand for a silver standard or a ban on the teaching of Darwin, and are for that very reason hard to tamp down. Many of Palin’s admirers seem to expect that, on receipt of the Republican Party nomination, she would immediately embark on a crusade against Wall Street and the banks. This notion is stupid to much the same degree that it is irresponsible…
“Once again, one is compelled to ask which would be worse: a Sarah Palin who really meant what she merely seemed to say, or a Sarah Palin who would say anything at all for a cheap burst of applause?”

Memoir Is Palin’s Payback to McCain Campaign
“Going Rogue,” the title of Sarah Palin’s erratic new memoir, comes from a phrase used by a disgruntled McCain aide to describe her going off-message during the campaign: among other things, for breaking with the campaign over its media strategy and its decision to pull out of Michigan, and for speaking out about reports that the Republican Party had spent more than $150,000 on fancy designer duds for her and her family. In fact, the most sustained and vehement barbs in this book are directed not at Democrats or liberals or the press, but at the McCain campaign. The very campaign that plucked her out of Alaska, anointed her the Republican vice-presidential nominee and made her one of the most talked about women on the planet — someone who could command a reported $5 million for writing this book.

Nothing against the woman but frankly, I wish she would go away. We need a serious contender for the GOP. She isn’t it. I understand that she wants to grab hold of her celebrity and make the most of it while she has the chance. More power to her. BUT the GOP needs a very strong, very experienced, very competent, very honorable, very courageous leader. Who is it? It’s not her.

I’m still confused. Are you sure this isn’t an Obama thread?
BacaDog on November 14, 2009 at 9:43 PM
This is a joke, right? It was insulting enough that her experience(or lack thereof) was used by the drive-bys last year to disqualify her from being VP, while the guy heading the opposing ticket had an even thinner resume. But now after Obama’s first year in office has been an unmitigated disaster, these people really wanna double down on that card?
I didn’t used to believe this, but I think this whole “experience” argument is starting look a little too misogynistic. Or at least it appears to stem from a bias against a conservative woman. Has any man, Republican or Democrat, ever been accused of being unqualified as much as Palin? Hell, Romney only had one term as governor. And he’s been out of office for 3 years. Where are all the charges from the media that he’s not ready for prime time?

This brief historical reflection takes care of the lazy charge, made by Matthew Continetti in his new book, The Persecution of Sarah Palin, that liberal dislike of his heroine is no more than “a distaste for those who hail from outside America’s coastal metropolises; a revulsion toward people who do not aspire to adopt the norms, values, politics, and attitudes of the Eastern cultural elite.” Gruening’s career also illustrates the major difference between a solid résumé and a perilously emaciated one.

Interesting that a lot of these anti-Palin pundits will look back at Reagan with memories (I’m reading lately) of a person who knew how to do this or that (being generally pragmatic), but at the time, I sure remember this same type of media treatment, don’t you? He was to be fear because of his ultra-right, dogmatic approach to politics.
Not necessarily comparing Ms. Palin to Mr. Reagan, but he had a good team around him and they were able to push through it (though I can’t remember as many GOP’ers sniping at him they way they are at SP…maybe so, I just don’t remember it).
It’ll sure be interesting to see if Sarah has the right stuff as well. Hope she’s building a trusted supporting staff.

One of the things the Democrats will never understand, now that Palin is her own woman, is how their relentless attacks on her actually attract voters to her.

Barack Obama was a half-term senator with ZERO experience in balancing a state budget, overseeing a national guard, and was NEVER responsible for day-to-day decisions of being a mayor/govenor. Funny, I don’t remember anyone at the NY Times making the “expertise” argument vis a vis Obama vs McCain. Hell, this:
is basically how Obama got elected in the first place, as well.
changer1701 on November 14, 2009 at 9:57 PM
The endgame was too important. The election of the first (half)black President was too big a story, and the fact that his politics were left of McGovern was the icing on the cake. So the media made up whatever narrative necessary to sell him to the public.
Suddenly ties to terrorists, anti-Semites, and racist preachers were no big deal. A complete lack of executive experience wasn’t a problem. A far left voting record was considered mainstream and pragmatic. And how dare anyone ask to see his real birth certificate or college transcripts?
The drive-bys hitched their wagon to the electoral equivalent of the Titanic and now they have to suffer the indignity of being dragged down with him. But they’re not about to go quietly. If it means smearing common, everyday Americans as “teabaggers” or doing everything they can to trash Sarah Palin, so be it. The next 3 years are going to be very ugly not just politically, but also in the way those events are covered by the media.
Doughboy on November 14, 2009 at 9:57 PM
“Yet, Mr. McCain’s astonishing decision to pick someone with so little experience (less than two years as the governor of Alaska, and before that, two terms as mayor of Wasilla, a town with fewer than 7,000 residents) as his running mate……..”
With Obama being elected, and with less experience, this whole point is moot. I the people that make this accusation don’t recognize that, they have a serious problem. As a President, Obama is proving why he’s not ready for prime time, with his comments overseas and his decisions on legislation at home.
Does anyone think Sarah Palin would have proposed a $787 billion stimulus package that did nothing, like Obama’s? I don’t even believe John McCain would have done that, but we’re not talking about him.

I think Hitchens has a point even though I don’t appreciate the way he wrote it. Her fan base right now is probably not going to like it when she has to move to center to appeal to a wider voter base. And, yes, if she wants any chance at being a serious contender for 2012 she’ll have to move to the center.
terryannonline on November 14, 2009 at 10:07 PM
I think Hitch has always been a social uber-leftie. His big change seemed to be his hawkish approach to Iraq and Afghanistan. These comments by him shouldn’t be too surprising to us.
This coming week reminds me of how it was before her big convention speech; “can she do it?”, “will she bomb?”, “what if she stumbles?”…etc. The left has definitely brought it up a few notches for this book release. Hope she brings her “happy Amazon warrior” game!
