Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 9:23 am on November 14, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Here’s a rare Saturday OOTD for Hot Air readers, but this one can’t wait for Monday.  Andrew Malcolm reports on Barack Obama’s latest breach of protocol, this time with Emperor Akihito of Japan:

How low will the new American president go for the world’s royalty?

This photo will get Democrat President Obama a lot of approving nods in Japan this weekend, especially among the older generation of Japanese who still pay attention to the royal family living in its downtown castle. Very low bows like this are a sign of great respect and deference for a superior.

To some in the United States, however, an upright handshake might have looked better. Remember Michelle Obama casually patting Britain’s Queen Elizabeth on the back during their Buckingham Palace visit? America’s royalty tends to make movies and get bad reviews and lots of money as a sign of respect.

Obama could receive some frowns back home as he did for his not-quite-this-low-or-maybe-about-the-same-bow to the Saudi king not so long ago.

Seven months ago, the White House insisted that Obama didn’t bow to Saudi King Abdullah, understanding the terrible breach in presidential protocol that it represented.  They tried to tell reporters that Obama was picking something up off the floor, which the video clearly shows was a lie (at the link).  Take a look at the picture of Obama’s bow to the son of Hirohito.  Do you see anything on that immaculate floor that requires retrieval?

American Presidents do not bow to royalty.  In fact, heads of state do not bow or genuflect to each other in the normal course of diplomacy.  At least, they didn’t until this amateur came into office and failed to learn from the first time he did it.  What will the White House say this time?  He got stomach cramps?

Update: Here’s video of the bow from a reader that wishes to remain anonymous:

Clearly a bow … and clearly not reciprocated.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

George Washington; Thomas Jefferson; Teddy Roosevelt; Gens Patton, MacArthur, and Eisenhower; Truman, Nixon, and Reagan are all spinning like tops in their graves. Hell, even JFK and Robert Kennedy are probably smacking their foreheads in disgust.

Meanwhile Qaddafi is going around now bragging, “Hey Vlad! Bet he’ll drop to his knees and suck MY d*ck before he does yours!!!”

Until now, my disagreement with Obama has been all policy. Now, I hate the guy. While Bill Clinton also disgraced the office, it was a personal, self-control issue. The disgrace Obama has brought to the presidency is larger in scope and deeper in significance. Obama must simply not understand that he is a temporary holder of that title. The presidency is an honor that has been bestowed upon only 44 men in our entire history. As one of those, he has a responsibility to return it in the same condition he received it, if not better. Bowing before monarchs does not achieve that goal.

On a side note, I wonder when Althouse will notice that the only monarch before which he did not bow was the female one.

This action (the bow) by Mr. Obama brings to my mind that he who now holds the office of the President of the USA is in Singapore talking to Russia about them “helping” with Iran and Afghanistan. I’m not the most knowledgeable person here, nor do I pretend to be very smart, but doesn’t it give one reason to pause as to just how much he will “bow” (or maybe a better word would be “grovel”) to the Russians? I for one am a little scared…

Indeed, jelly fish. It’s indicative of all he’s doing.

He is the first post-U.S.American president, and really not an American at all. For 230 years, given this country’s beginning, and given that Australia/Canada are still “subjects”, this is no doubt RIDICULOUS and SHAMEFUL.

Not to forget that it would be with any emperor, but this one is the son of the one who ordered Pearl Harbor, over 2000 dead…

He would bow to bin Laden if he’d find him alive.

Obviously the significance of this has flown right over your head! This is just one more nail if the coffin of the USA. Obama is trying to intimate that America is not a leader anymore. He is like a puppy giving deference to an old alpha male. It shows the total disobediance to everything America stands for, and for what our forefathers felt–that America bows to no one!

Not only does this buffoon break Presidential protocol, but he can’t even properly perform a traditional Japanese greeting. He’s an embarrassment on so many levels, the state department has scores of people on the pay-roll whose job it is to keep the Prez up to speed on protocol. simplesimon on November 15, 2009 at 11:18 AM

I noticed in the video he actually kept on bowing. I also noticed that he carefully kept his bow to the empress at a less obsequious level. This implies that he was acting deliberately.

A nod of the head might have been “respect for age from youth”. The bow that he performed was not even “employee to master” or “inferior to superior”. It was either “slave to master” or “subject to monarch”.

Even someone as ignorant of bowing protocol could see that. I might be expected to bow to the emperor as “civilian to monarch”, but he was expected to be “head of state to monarch of another country on that monarchs home territory”.

Whether a person (who admits having been) born subject to the laws of a foreign power can become Commander In Chief of the US armed forces is a genuine and necessary question of law, not a conspiracy theory.

NightmareOnKStreet on November 15, 2009 at 3:06 AM

You promote what you think is best. I’ll focus on the 2010 elections, then 2012.

Loxodonta on November 15, 2009 at 7:11 AM

Lox, I agree, to each his own, but I don’t see it as “either/or”. Both plans of action dovetail nicely; like a one-two punch. Because even if the specific statute to remove a president for ineligibility the writ of quo warranto fails in the District Court in D.C., the discovery process may yield information which will, no doubt, hurt Obama’s re-election chances (along with the Dems for not vetting him properly) in both upcoming elections..
.
The big differences, imo, between your plan to wait until the elections in 2010 & 2012 and using quo warranto are:
.

~~First, if quo warranto succeeds, Obama will be removed immediately and all his programs, actions & legislation will be reversed. Then a new election will be held. It’s a TOTAL MULLIGAN.
.
~~Second, waiting to change the balance of power in 2010 is a gamble because even then, the Repubs may not want to go through the impeachment process/mess & turn independents off (like what happened with Clinton)

.
~~Third, allowing Obama to complete his term is going to set a precedent for ignoring the Constitution, as well as allowing a candidate to lie under oath on his application that he is Constitutionally eligible.
.
~~Fourth, by allowing those born with allegiance to and governed by other countries (as Obama has told us he was in his own autobiography- page 26 of “Dreams of My Father”) to be POTUS, we open the door for almost no control over who becomes our Commander-in-Chief. That is a national security issue, not just a legal issue.
.
~~Fifth, if we ignore the Art.2, Sec. 1, Cl.5 (NBC) requirement, will we next ignore the age requirement of 35 years or the 14 year residency requirement. Maybe our next “Messiah” will be 25 & looking for his first real job.
.
Lox, I fully support your choice to wait another one to three years to try to effect change in Congress & then the White House. I’m not “promoting” only one course of action anymore than you are. I am hoping that by reading about quo warranto, people will realize that there is more they can do than just wait for the next election to remove a potential national security risking usurper from continuing to run our country into the ground and our military into oblivion. His actions can be reversed & new election held (= no Pres. Biden) Knowledge is power. What anyone does with it, is their choice.

A bow has meaning. Bending at the waist is a sign of subservience, especially in Asian culture.

There are really only two options here. Either Obama is completely ignorant of protocol and has no idea how to act in social situations, or he is intentionally marking his (and thus the US’s) subservience to Japan.
