Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 9:23 am on November 14, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Here’s a rare Saturday OOTD for Hot Air readers, but this one can’t wait for Monday.  Andrew Malcolm reports on Barack Obama’s latest breach of protocol, this time with Emperor Akihito of Japan:

How low will the new American president go for the world’s royalty?

This photo will get Democrat President Obama a lot of approving nods in Japan this weekend, especially among the older generation of Japanese who still pay attention to the royal family living in its downtown castle. Very low bows like this are a sign of great respect and deference for a superior.

To some in the United States, however, an upright handshake might have looked better. Remember Michelle Obama casually patting Britain’s Queen Elizabeth on the back during their Buckingham Palace visit? America’s royalty tends to make movies and get bad reviews and lots of money as a sign of respect.

Obama could receive some frowns back home as he did for his not-quite-this-low-or-maybe-about-the-same-bow to the Saudi king not so long ago.

Seven months ago, the White House insisted that Obama didn’t bow to Saudi King Abdullah, understanding the terrible breach in presidential protocol that it represented.  They tried to tell reporters that Obama was picking something up off the floor, which the video clearly shows was a lie (at the link).  Take a look at the picture of Obama’s bow to the son of Hirohito.  Do you see anything on that immaculate floor that requires retrieval?

American Presidents do not bow to royalty.  In fact, heads of state do not bow or genuflect to each other in the normal course of diplomacy.  At least, they didn’t until this amateur came into office and failed to learn from the first time he did it.  What will the White House say this time?  He got stomach cramps?

Update: Here’s video of the bow from a reader that wishes to remain anonymous:

Clearly a bow … and clearly not reciprocated.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Illustrations by Chris Muir of Day by Day. Be sure to read the adventures of Sam, Zed, Damon, and Jan every day!

Let’s all work towards that day when we find out.

Very low bows like this are a sign of great respect and deference for a superior.

Well to be fair, he is inferior to just about everyone. The slimy hairball my cat just coughed up on the floor is superior to o.

Monica on November 14, 2009 at 9:28 AM

Proof: foolish ass.

NEVER take your eyes off the other’s eyes. Besides leaving yourself vulnerable, it is a sign of disrespect, if not to your host, then to all those whom you represent.

Lordy, lordy, didn’t Pookie Obama at least see the Karate Kid once?

maverick muse on November 14, 2009 at 9:28 AM

I really don’t care… if he wants to bow let him bow…

TXUS on November 14, 2009 at 9:29 AM

He tripped over a crack in the floor. Or else the Republicans photoshopped the whole thing. Oh yeah…

The PowerLine guys are all over it too.

Malcolm thus misses the difference between Macarthur and Obama. Obama is not particularly deferential either. Obama is a man of extraordinary arrogance. He seeks fundamentally to transform the United States. With him, a new age begins.

Drained Brain on November 14, 2009 at 9:29 AM

Obama the man can bow all he wants. But he’s acting as the President of the United States on an official state visit. Obama’s not bowing. The President of the United States, the chief executive and leader of our country, is bowing.

amerpundit on November 14, 2009 at 9:35 AM

Yeah. Our ‘american’ President is as much American as a Typhoon-Class boomer.

And about as helpful as one, to boot.

Hey Dear Leader, thanks for the 2012 GOP campaign picture.

Heck, we could even have a contest captioning it.

I wonder what they will say about this at LGF. I remember reading a thread where Chucky, in his defense of Obama, said that John Adams bowed to King George III on his visit to England. After it was pointed out that Adams was not the president at the time but the Minister Plenipotentiary to England Chuck still persisted that because Adams did it, it was OK for Obama to. I think he may have finally admitted his mistake but it took a while.

WisCon on November 14, 2009 at 9:38 AM

Is he that ignorant or purposefully trying to do things differently?

It’s hard to believe either is possible. Either no one told him about the uproar over his last bow, or they did and he just doesn’t care and thinks he’s doing something useful by showing extra respect.

Oh, I know: he was trying to show that the first bow was no big deal…”see, I do it for everyone!”

Cluelessness is, unfortunately for all of us, the most likely cause.

MamaAJ on November 14, 2009 at 9:39 AM

He can’t help himself. It seems to be an instinctual thing with him to bow before “royalty”. Nauseating.

greggish on November 14, 2009 at 9:39 AM

Ed is correct. American Presidents don’t bow, because they represent the office and America, not their own narrow interests.

That’s right. Even as a bow of Western humility, it sucks so badly with his poor hunched over posture. So much for the great athlete propagandized during the potus campaign, lauded by the international press, notably Der Spiegel.

Where’d the uplifted jaw and look down that nose go? Left at home to use on his own minions, US.

Obama’s only show of strength is a viciously sadistic antipathy for Constitutionally loyal Americans. Otherwise, this picture says it all. Kick my bony, perverted masochistic global @ss.

maverick muse on November 14, 2009 at 9:40 AM

He bows to the Emperor of Japan and King of Saudi Arabia, but only slightly bows his head when meeting the Queen of England and his wife ‘pats’ her on her back.

Pretty much tells it all right there.

I think Obama is trying to do damage control. He doesn’t want us to think he only bows to Muslim royalty. Yeah, douchebag, it worked, we are totally convinced.

Can we force DC into secession and start a new country with 49 states (not including the ones Obama counted)? This is getting extremely embarrassing.

I think what is happening is he has not a clue. If his chief of protocol said to strip naked and dance the Charleston while wearing a funny hat, the only thing he would be worried about would be to find a hat big enough to fit. And the media would say how innovative.

mandalis on November 14, 2009 at 9:41 AM

Anyone who was 10-12 in the sixties, having grown up watching all the great movies about pirates and the Britannia Rules the Waves and movies about the Queen of with the Queen as a figure in them, would want to do a classic Errol Flynn “My Queen” bow if they ever met her.

For the Saudi king, and the Emperor of Japan, yeah, a handshake will do. Even step in close so they have to look up at you, and get that pic for the papers. How unsavvy of BO.

The One’s staff must understand the oriental culture better if they are going to sell U.S. out to the Chinese. There are certain protocols in the orient regarding bowing.

In this case the Presidents bow is too low. While bowing more than 15 degrees is a sign of respect for the elderly in this case President Obama is bowing far too deep. This action shows he is maintaining his goal of making U.S. subservient to every other nation in the world.

There’s another point of view to consider. So long as the next potus repudiates Obama’s errors as they occur, that new potus does not “inherit” the onus, but pursues his own constituents’ platform course.

Even Obama is not “cleaning up” any trouble he “inherited” from Bush. Bush handed the Iraq War Victory on a silver plate in the transition in office.

Bush should never have left the 9/11 terrorists awaiting the next potus to determine handling. Exactly what were any of the deaths, injuries and losses FOR in our wars in Iraq and Afghanistan (and Pakistan) if those responsible to 9/11 are not executed promptly as legally AND MORALLY required? Shame on Bush’s administration for handing the outcome of the 9/11 terrorists into this amoral Marxist Obama administration’s hands on a silver platter. The Chief Executive and the Commander in Chief who got Congressional approval to commit warfare against al Qaeda refused to fulfill his official duties by having “neglected” to show the stamina that even FDR had. Look hard at “compassionate conservatism” to see how it IS progressive socialism, Mary Poppins sugar coated Marxism.

Obama is anti-Constitution, and is augmenting and INITIATING more terrorism, so much more trouble, he refuses to admit.

As if ignoring, denying or postponing would grant protection from the obligations and duties of office. “It reeks of human blood!
