Obama to Congress: Back off the Hasan probe

posted at 10:13 am on November 14, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

In the aftermath of the massacre at Fort Hood and the deaths of fourteen people, some members of Congress demanded investigations into why the Army and the FBI failed to identify and stop Major Nidal Malik Hasan before he had an opportunity to commit mass murder.  Some of the revelations from Hasan’s past, including communications with an al-Qaeda recruiter in Yemen, have Rep. Pete Hoekstra and Sen. Joe Lieberman promising to conduct separate investigations into the failure of counterterrorism efforts.  President Obama warned Congress to stay out of it, at least until the FBI finishes investigating the shootings:

President Barack Obama on Saturday urged Congress to hold off on any investigation of the Fort Hood rampage until federal law enforcement and military authorities have completed their probes into the shootings at the Texas Army post, which left 13 people dead.

On an eight-day Asia trip, Obama turned his attention home and pleaded for lawmakers to “resist the temptation to turn this tragic event into the political theater.” He said those who died on the nation’s largest Army post deserve justice, not political stagecraft.

“The stakes are far too high,” Obama said in a video and Internet address released by the White House while the president he was flying from Tokyo to Singapore, where Pacific Rim countries were meeting.

There are two separate issues to be investigated, however, and nothing prevents them from being investigated in parallel.  The first is the shootings themselves, which so far appear to be fairly cut-and-dried, at least in terms of identifying the shooter.  Several witnesses saw Hasan shooting, and the military and FBI have publicly stated that they believe he acted alone.  They certainly have enough evidence already to try Hasan, which will give the victims and their families justice.

But at the same time, we have to make sure that we don’t have other Hasans waiting in the wings, and we have to fix the failures in our counterterrorism efforts that allowed this to happen.  That can’t wait until after Hasan’s trial, which could take months.  Furthermore, that oversight authority belongs to Congress, not the FBI or the CIA or even the executive branch.  Congress has to investigate the series of decisions made that shrugged off Hasan as no threat even though he made a number of contacts to a figure considered a suspect in the 9/11 plot and who openly recruits for al-Qaeda, behaved so oddly that his colleagues considered him “delusional” and complained up the chain of command about his apparent disloyalty, and who may have sent a lot of his money to Pakistan, according to reports from the House Intelligence Committee.

The families of the victims deserves justice.  The American people deserve an accounting of the failure quickly enough to fix the problem so that more American families won’t have to cry for justice after other attacks.  Fortunately, this country can walk and chew gum at the same time.

Dear President Obama,

Go f*ck yourself. You have turned the War on Terror into “political theater” in an attempt to pander to your base. The result of that is 14 dead people at Fort Hood. You are now going to be crucified for the fact that your “political theater” was and is deadly to Americans.

If you didn’t want that to happen, you shouldn’t have played political theater with national security. Because it is now far too late for you to be complaining about it.

Osama Obama’s plea to Congress brings up the inevitable question raised by so many of his actions: what is he trying to hide?

Is there some tie between Hasan and the Traitor-in-Chief, no matter how small, that might be exposed? Did the White House/Justice Department/FBI/CIA know — and suppress — some piece of information at the Chicago Jesus’s request that might have stopped this act of terrorism before it happened?

I wonder if there is an inconvenient truth in here that would show yet another unsavory aspect of our America-hating boss-man.

The tactic is this:

Had Holder not have brought up KSM, then we would’ve been heading into Sunday talk shows talking about the Ft Hood Massacre and how it was or wasn’t Islamic terrorism. So, in order to avoid a “bad weekend” for the administration, we have to pay millions for a terrorist to come thumb his nose at the families of 9/11 victims.

The Ft Hood incident was terrorism conducted on Obama’s watch and this ought to be the story of the day. There are 14 funerals underway, 30 other people nursing scars, stitches, and pain…

Obama seeks to shift the momentum and cover his own bad news with more bad news. This is simply plain stupid, selfish, and decidedly unAmerican.

An enemy of our country attacked those soldiers. You’re right, we should rise up and see to it that those soldiers get awarded the Purple Heart. An act of terrorism has occurred on our soil, by a sworn enemy of this country. When a soldier is wounded by an armed enemy, then they are eligible for a Purple Heart. I don’t want Congress investigating didly here. They can damn well wait until Army CID has finished enough to make some judgments. The Army will get the answer much quicker than Congress ever will. And they won’t politicize their findings either.

I admire JoeMentum, but this is a bad idea. Sorry, Ed. Your supposition that the Army hasn’t already figured out what went wrong and taken or will be taking steps in the near future is wrong. And it is severely doubtful that there is anything in ANY White House files which has ANY bearing on this case. The evidence is in Army and NSA files and needs nothing else to be found.

I vote Congress shut the Hell up since they are the primary cause of this problem (political correctness and crippling of the intel capabilities of the USA) for the last 40 years. Look at how the obfuscations of the causes of 9-11, like the firewall between FBI and CIA was washed over like so much detritus. Jamie Gorelick’s policies were a major and exceptionally damaging cause of the intel failures for 9-11. And she is still walking around breathing and making millions to this day.

Sorry. Congress needs to keep their dickskinners off this until the Army is finished. Not like me to agree with his Nibs, but he is correct in this case.

Some way to honor our Veterans during the occasion we commemorate their service – Veterans Day. By ignoring Hasan’s 14th murder victim.

Dr Evil on November 14, 2009 at 10:21 AM

Washington Times: Pvt. Francheska Velez, a 21-year-old Chicago native, was six weeks pregnant when she was gunned down. Her unborn child is the 14th victim, but the death so far has been ignored by our government.

Weeks before the Nov. 5 shooting at Fort Hood, Velez had been driving fuel tankers in Iraq when she learned she was pregnant. Because of the good news, she rotated home early to take an assignment outside of the war zone. She had come to the room where the terrorist struck to fill out paperwork related to her pregnancy. Had she not been pregnant, she still would have been half a world away serving in Iraq at the time of the shootings.

Fort Hood terror attack — 0

Like when a Muslim who has expressed support for killing infidels, has links with terror plotters, and considers himself a “soldier of Allah,” and shouts “Allah Akbar!,” as he opens fire, then kills 14 innocent Americans.

Obama has failed to protect us (Ft. Hood) from terrorism, less than a year into his presidency -a presidency that has succumbed aggressively to the Lord Chamberlain disease of appeasement -especially to those nations that are breeding grounds of terror.

By any standard, his game is one of failure. Congress, he doesn’t own you yet. Glad to see the first sign of independence from the White House Puppet master. Be prudent, secret where necessary, but start the investigations, but don’t stop with Ft. Hood. Continue investigating the czars and the pro-Marxists in the administration, ACORN, SEIU and elsewhere. I like being friendly, generous, and kind to people who look or think differently than me, especially those who have faced bias or other hardships. I’m very intolerant of bigotry and elitism. I doubt a racial, ethnic, or sexual slur has ever exited my lips.

But freedom, truth, competence and the content of one’s character always come first.

And political correctness is a form of elitist bigotry that turns a blind eye to the truth, competence and character, while suppressing freedom and discriminating in a biased manner. To me, it is just as wrong as the bigotry that it supposedly seeks to squelch. And, as this case shows, it also results in death.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

From every mountainside, let freedom ring.

And when this happens, when we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God’s children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, “Free at last! free at last! thank God Almighty, we are free at last!”

— Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968)

I have not yet given up on that dream. Political correctness must end.

.
How many millions of Americans are in almost the same predicament? The difference is there are millions of people (at other conservative blogs that aren’t afraid to discuss the subject) trying to warn them to GET OUT NOW!!!
.
There are so many reasons that Obama is not fit to be POTUS. The first, if not the most glaring of which, is his own admission* that he was born a British citizen which makes him Constitutionally ineligible. That revelation alone means he was (nor can he ever become) a natural born U.S. citizen at birth. They are mutually exclusive. Well versed in Constitutional law, he was fully aware of this when he swore otherwise in his POTUS candidacy statement of eligibility.
.
We all need to start demanding that Obama be removed from office now via the statute created for this very purpose quo warranto

“Because a quo warranto is the only proper action to review the eligibility of a sitting President – and because such an action requires a trial of facts – Congress empowered the DC District Court to hold such a trial (by jury if requested by either party) when the eligibility of the President (or any US national office holder) is called into question…”

.
Or continue to allow yourself to be silenced into oblivion boiled alive.

Lox, one course of action doesn’t preclude the other. But a writ of quo warranto gets Obama packing the U-Haul a whole lot sooner than 2012.
.
With all due respect, this country seems to have reached a tipping point in recent days. With the Fort Hood attack, Obama’s shout-out/don’t jump to conclusions speech right afterward, and his message to Congress to “lay off the Fort Hood investigation” in light of the fact that the shooter/terrorist Major Nidal Hasan was one of the members of of Obama’s Task Force for the Homeland Security Policy Institute (see Appendix C, page 29), the decision to hold the terrorists’ trial in a NYC criminal court rather than a military tribunal, not to mention his plans for spending trillions of our tax dollars or putting us in jail for not buying health insurance, I really don’t think we have time to wait for another brutal campaign spin cycle.
.
Remember Obama’s sarcastic response to McCain’s decision to suspend his campaign and come back to D.C. to deal with the financial crisis? Obama said, “Some of us can walk AND chew gum at the same time.” I’m just suggesting we show Obama we’re not the morons he thinks we are.

Hmmm…

Obama’s decision to put Khaled Sheikh Mohammed through a civilian criminal trail in New York City, instead of a military trial or indefinite determent, is another example of the incredible blindness and danger of political correctness. I’m expecting Obama to take the same approach in the Fort Hood terror attack. We are indeed back to pre-9/11 foolishness.

Out of Political Correctness, the only casualty at ft Hood to be awarded the Purple Heart will be the Muslim–Hasan.

MaiDee on November 15, 2009 at 12:53 AM

These people deserve the Purple Heart.

We need to make it so.

They were killed by an armed enemy of our country. A traitor in uniform who had no allegiance to the country that gave him so much. He was a traitor, a treasonous bastard, an Islamofascist terrorist that, if caught on the battlefield, would be in gitmo today (at least for the next 6 mos since it won’t be closed in Jan).

ted c on November 15, 2009 at 1:01 AM

ted c on November 15, 2009 at 1:01 AM

Yes. From purpleheart.org:

Criteria For a Purple Heart

The Purple Heart is currently awarded pursuant to Executive Order 11016, 25 April 1962, Executive Order 12464, 23 February 1984 and Public Law 98-525, 19 October 1984.

A. The Purple Heart is awarded in the name of the President of the United States to any member of the Armed Forces of the United States who, while serving under competent authority in any capacity with one of the U.S. Armed Services after 5 April 1917, has been wounded or killed, or who has died or may hereafter die after being wounded as follows:

4. As a result of an act of any such enemy of opposing armed forces.

6. After 28 March 1973, as a result of an international terrorist attack against the United States or a foreign nation friendly to the United States, recognized as such an attack by the Secretary of the Army, or jointly by the Secretaries of the separate armed services concerned if persons from more than one service are wounded in the attack.

If Hasan’s actions are a terror attack, which seems obvious to me, regardless of the MSM and presidential obfuscation, and Hasan had links to international terrorists, which it seems, then it doesn’t matter that Hasan was a US citizen. Instead, Hasan was acting as an enemy of the United States, committing an Act of War against the United States.
Therefore, each of the 11(?) active military deserve a Purple Heart.

Criminalizing one’s political opponents is a common practice of the Left. I don’t want to emulate it. And trying to remove two opposing presidents in a row from office might give that impression, wouldn’t it?
.
If our country has reached a tipping point with this president, let’s deal with it like we always have at the voting booth and not tip off the deep end.

Loxodonta on November 14, 2009 at 10:38 PM

.
If we weren’t fighting for our very lives, I’d take a more laid back approach, as you suggest & wait for 2012. But everyday this usurper is in office he is changing, damaging and making us less safe. So I’d rather not sit around and sing Kumbaya while he dismantles our country, one piece at a time.

.
Asking Obama to reconsile his “born British” statement with the oath he swore that he was Constitutionally eligible for POTUS is hardly “criminalizing” him. He may well be a citizen or even native born but he cannot be a natural born citizen at birth unless he had no other governments to answer to and no divided loyalties.
.
His answer is what may criminalize him. Let’s put the responsibility squarely on him. We are ready to have him removed from the Oval Office by any non-violent legal means possible, like a writ of quo warranto in District Court in Washington D.C. Challenging his British born citizenship vs his U.S. natural born citizenship at birth only leads to criminalization if he’s guilty. And if he’s guilty, he needs to go… yesterday. .

Whether a person (who admits having been) born subject to the laws of a foreign power can become Commander In Chief of the US armed forces is a genuine and necessary question of law, not a conspiracy theory

Or, perhaps Ed or AP will come up with another image of their own. I would like something other than that face in every Fort Air thread.

CWforFreedom on November 15, 2009 at 11:33 AM

Ron Kuby is right about this:

“[Mohammed's] goal in the legal system is not to beat the rap. His goal is to use the legal system as a forum for his own ideas and to embrace martyrdom through that system.”

I hope I am wrong on how this plays out, but I suspect that “Judgment at Nuremburg” this will not be. Holder and Obama gave KSM a hell of a last request, a chance to play (granted KSM’s own sick twisted version) of “A Man of All Seasons” or “Braveheart.” Take your choice.

Maybe its’ entirely appropriate that the Army is heading up this investigation with the help of the FBI and Texas Rangers, but count me skeptical that the organization that has Hussein Obama as its Commander In Chief would HEAD UP the investigation thus under orders be subject to shutting it down or covering it up!

Why would Pinnochio Hussein Obama demand congress shut down its investigation? Shut it down until he and Holder can do a thourogh whitewash of and elimination of the evidence that points directly at them and this EPIC FAILURE of and administration?

Perhaps Holder is runnin a bluff and when the heat gets hot enough offer to keep the trials in Military Court rather than NYC in exchange for a hush up of Fort Hood.

Is there anyone left that trusts this administration and their wild claims?
Jobs saved or created?
Dollars saved by Gov’t Healthscare?
Economic recovery in the midst of climbing unemployment?
H1N1 national crisis when it’s no where near as dangerous as the regular flu?

This admin is packed with radicals and losers from the Clintoon Admin, the same folks who gave us 911!

SG1_Conservative on November 15, 2009 at 11:57 PM

The first is the shootings themselves, which so far appear to be fairly cut-and-dried, at least in terms of identifying the shooter. Several witnesses saw Hasan shooting, and the military and FBI have publicly stated that they believe he acted alone. They certainly have enough evidence already to try Hasan, which will give the victims and their families justice.

You think that’s the entire scope of the investigation Obama is talking about? Did you bother reading the article which you linked?

Obama already had ordered a review of all intelligence related to Hasan and whether the information was properly shared and acted upon within government agencies.

“There is an ongoing investigation into this terrible tragedy,” Obama said. “That investigation will look at the motives of the alleged gunman, including his views and contacts.”

“We must compile every piece of information that was known about the gunman, and we must learn what was done with that information. Once we have those facts, we must act upon them.”

You’re claiming Obama only wants an investigation of who committed the shooting when that’s clearly not the case. Why are you lying about this? Why are you more interested in using this tragedy as a political football than getting the information?

Political correctness, in part at least, killed these troops. A bunch of bureaucrats didn’t want to offend a Muslim who was clearly doing something amiss. Radical Islam has long since declared war on us but we have too many who live in denial of this fact and it’s getting our people killed. It isn’t over either. We got 3 more years of Obama still but hopefully only another year of a Congress which lives in that same state of denial.
