Flashback: NYT blasts Clinton for … almost bowing to Akihito

posted at 11:40 am on November 14, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Both Allahpundit and I referenced this blast from the past at the time Barack Obama bowed to Abdullah earlier this year.  It’s worth posting again, not just because Obama pulled another boneheaded protocol violation and bowed to an emperor, but in this case bowed to the same emperor with whom Bill Clinton almost committed the same protocol violation.  Douglas Jehr, in a 1994 New York Times report, made it clear that had Clinton actually executed a full bow, it would have destroyed a precedent dating to the founding of the Republic:

It wasn’t a bow, exactly. But Mr. Clinton came close. He inclined his head and shoulders forward, he pressed his hands together. It lasted no longer than a snapshot, but the image on the South Lawn was indelible: an obsequent President, and the Emperor of Japan.

Canadians still bow to England’s Queen; so do Australians. Americans shake hands. If not to stand eye-to-eye with royalty, what else were 1776 and all that about?  …

Guests invited to a white-tie state dinner at the White House (a Clinton Administration first) were instructed to address the Emperor as “Your Majesty,” not “Your Highness” or, worse, “King.” And in what one Administration aide called “some emperor thing,” an Army general was cautioned that he should not address the Emperor Akihito at all as he escorted him to the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery.

But the “thou need not bow” commandment from the State Department’s protocol office maintained a constancy of more than 200 years. Administration officials scurried to insist that the eager-to-please President had not really done the unthinkable.

The New York Times didn’t have much to say after Obama’s bow to Abdullah despite having scolded Clinton in this manner for almost bowing to Akihito.  Now that Obama has done “the unthinkable” twice, and this time to Akihito, will the New York Times have anything to say about it?  Will any of the national news media inquire as to whether the Obama administration has changed American protocol from its 233-year norm of not bowing to royalty, and exactly what “hope and change” that represents?

Will any of the national news media inquire as to whether the Obama administration has changed American protocol from its 233-year norm of not bowing to royalty, and exactly what “hope and change” that represents?

Why, of course they will, Mr. Morrissey. After all, isn’t all the fine organizations in the national news media absolute paragons of objectivity and nonpartisanship? Why, I’m sure they’ll report criticisms of Obama exactly the same as if a Republican had done it. Certainly they would never, ever, ever cover up Obama’s boneheaded moves in order to make Teh One look good and advance the liberal cause.

I can hear it now. The lib blogs will say that bowing is better than getting sick all over them. Didn’t Bush get really sick at a Japan state dinner or something? I don’t remember the details.

I love how drudge has this bow, all front and center. It makes Obama look like the idiot he is.

Is he going to bow to the commander of the Chinese Airborne Task Force that is going to conduct a tactical air assault operation outside LA, Seattle, Phoenix?

Is he going to bow as he meets the Chinese Naval Commander at the Port of San Diego where he will transfer authority of our naval base there over to Chinese control?

At what point does our sovereignty mean something?

Let’s see what kind of country there is left for your daughters and grand daughters after you get done destroying it there Your Bowness.

Will you bow to an American Soldier who earns the Medal of Honor?

Will you bow to an American Athlete who beats the Chinese, or the Japanese athletes during an Olympic contest?

Will you ever subjugate yourself to the office or to the country which you are supposed to represent? The office you hold far exceeds your small suited ability to fill it. It has been held by men of character and is now occupied by a mouthpiece that can do nothing more than turn the heat up.

Pathetic.

Look, in Japan everybody bows to each other. Equals to equals. Superiors even bow to inferiors. So if Obama had give a 15 degree bow in greeting towards the Emperor of Japan, I wouldn’t be too upset.

Yes it breaks precedent, but to the Japanese it wouldn’t signify more than respect for their country and culture- it would not be seen as genuflecting and would not signal accepting the authority of the Emporer.

But no- Obama has to go and give a bow of much more than 45 degrees, it looked like 80 degrees or more. That’s the way you bow to make a deeply felt apology- or to a superior.

That is totally unacceptable.

Apparently Obama is bowing again this time to the Japanese emperor (I guess the one who is related to the one who came out of the hills to sign the peace treaty after WWII–which happened in Obama bizzaro history only). Althouse had this youtube clip on proper bowing protocol for da One.

Mr. Joe on November 14, 2009 at 12:06 PM

I agree with Sackett about the Japanese tradition of bowing, but when Maobama just happens to bow very deeply to a foreign emperor after spending the last year apologizing for America’s existence, it might just tell us a lot about Barry’s pathetic foreign policy stance..or that he is incompetent.

Awesome point. American and allied prisoners of war during World War II were forced to bow very deeply to Japanese prison guards as a sign of submission. My dad fought in the Pacific in WWII. He died last Spring. I miss him, but frankly, at least he’s not alive to see this.

DannoJyd on November 14, 2009 at 1:25 PM

Barack Obama will eventually take the emperor and many other world leaders down in his quest to declare himself emperor of the world. but for now he is content with subjugating himself to allow world leaders to believe he is working with them, assisting them in making the world better. “Oh that president obama, his is such concerned nice guy”. He was very careful not to betray his true feelings about Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Half of the american don’t see who and what this man is nor do too many of the world leaders.
