Top McCain aide: Palin’s lying about what happened with Couric

posted at 8:28 pm on November 13, 2009 by Allahpundit

You’ll be pleased to know that this comes on the same day that Maverick revealed he received a signed copy of “Going Rogue” in the mail. The inscription: “J– It’s my turn. –S.”

I’m kidding about that last part. Maybe.

Reflecting on the first set of interviews Palin did as the GOP vice presidential nominee, [Mark] Salter said that the sit downs were “discussed and agreed to by senior members of the campaign staff in consultation with the candidate” and that Wallace did not choose either the journalists or the outlets Palin spoke to.

“Nicolle Wallace, along with others, was tasked with helping the Governor prepare for some of her interviews. She did not decide which interview requests the candidates would accept. Nor was she tasked with securing the candidates’ agreement,” Salter said.

“Those decisions were made by campaign management in consultation with the candidates. Campaign management and the candidates agreed to multi-segment interviews so the Governor would maintain a presence in the media while she was in debate prep,” he added. “And to the best of my knowledge, any interviews the Governor had with the individuals she referred to were approved and arranged by the campaign management with her agreement.”

Former McCain strategist John Weaver was more direct in his criticism, slamming Palin for using the book for “petty and pathetic” score-settling.

“Sarah Palin reminds me of Jimmy Stewart in the movie ‘Harvey,’ complete with imaginary conversations. All books like these are revisionist and self-serving, by definition,” Weaver wrote in an email to POLITICO. “But the score-settling by someone who wants to be considered a serious national player is petty and pathetic.”

Not as harsh as Ann Althouse’s “Sarah Palin is dumb” takedown from this morning, but still plenty harsh. We’re in for a good, solid month of this sniping as she does her grand tour of cable news, aren’t we? Ah well. A toast — to easy content.

Here’s Palin defender Matthew Continetti appearing on “Hardball” this afternoon to plug his new book about her abuse by the media. And here’s the obligatory AP fact-check of her book. Was Sarahcuda really anti-bailout? Hmmm.

I think Gov. Palin would have to have a few more imaginary conversations to make up for the stuff the campaign “leaked” about her. This is these people’s livelihood, it’s not surprising they won’t want to appear bad at their job.

I wouldn’t believe it if McCain himself said it, say nothing about his “professional top aids”. The man is a great American military hero. He should retire now; write a book or something, because he’s becoming politically irrelevant very rapidly. Even AP has to admit; McCain is very old news. Palin is worth a couple hundred hits per post.

GoldenEagle4444 on November 13, 2009 at 9:26 PM

The Republicans are more afraid of Sarah than the Dem’s. The only reason McCain came as close in the election as he did, was do to Sarah. Stay tuned to Rush on Tuesday, he will have Sarah live on his show. Next week will be great Rush and Sarah together and my 10 copies of her book. Guess what my liberal friends are getting for Christmas …LOL

Wade on November 13, 2009 at 8:48 PM

+1,000,000,000!!!!

Wade wins post of the year.

Thank you for divining the central issue of the next year. To reform the Nation and restore the Old Republic, the first thing Palin has to do is take back the Republican Party for Reaganism.

The people around McCain represented the go-along, get-along, “we are in it for our share of the pork” crowd.

The ONLY reason why people like Salter, Wallace, and Schmidt are upset that Obama is in power is that the Democrats on the Hill and in the White House have shut them down from the really lucrative lobbying contacts. When Bush left town, he took his Republican piggies with him. All that occured was that Obama replaced Bush’s piggies with his own rather Hungry Hogs. Rahm Emanuel’s job is to make sure that the hogs get fed.

Palin has built a career in Alaska against that kind of thing. The people in DC hate her for that. They don’t want to see her and her kind of populism take over the GOP. They like the GOP the way it is: a Rich Man’s lobbying club the way it was under the Bushies. Every few years the GOP can go out and gin up the goobers with talk about gay marriage and Birth Certificates and whatnot, but as long as the same Republicans in DC control the party, NOTHING EVER CHANGES.

Palin and her people, the Reagan coalition, are a threat to that. The Washington GOP would just as soon live with a Neo-socialist Obamist Government than lose their perks. Trust me on this if you trust me on nothing else.

This is from Drudge this morning.

Going Rogue: An American Life
by Sarah Palin
Chapter Four; Section 8, pages 255-257

By the third week in September, a “Free Sarah” campaign was under way and the press at large was growing increasingly critical of the McCain camp’s decision to keep me, my family and friends back home, and my governor’s staff all bottled up. Meanwhile, the question of which news outlet would land the first interview was a big deal, as it always is with a major party candidate.

From the beginning, Nicolle [Wallace] pushed for Katie Couric and the CBS Evening News. The campaign’s general strategy involved coming out with a network anchor, someone they felt had treated John well on the trail thus far. My suggestion was that we be consistent with that strategy and start talking to outlets like FOX and the Wall Street Journal. I really didn’t have a say in which press I was going to talk to, but for some reason Nicolle seemed compelled to get me on the Katie bandwagon.

“Katie really likes you,” she said to me one day. “she’s a working mom and admires you as a working mom. She has teenage daughter like you. She just relates to you,” Nicolle said. “believe me, I know her very well. I’ve worked with her.” Nicolle had left her gig at CBS just a few months earlier to hook up with the McCain campaign. I had to trust her experience, as she had dealt with national politics more than I had. But something always struck me as peculiar about the way she recalled her days in the White House, when she was speaking on behalf of President George W. Bush. She didn’t have much to say that was positive about her former boss or the job in general. Whenever I wanted to give a shout-out to the White House’s homeland security efforts after 9/11, we were told we couldn’t do it. I didn’t know if that was Nicolle’s call.

Nicolle went on to explain that Katie really needed a career boost. “She just has such low self-esteem,” Nicolle said. She added that Katie was going through a tough time. “She just feels she can’t trust anybody.”

I was thinking, And this has to do with John McCain’s campaign how?

Nicolle said. “She wants you to like her.”

Hearing all that, I almost started to feel sorry for her. Katie had tried to make a bold move from lively morning gal to serious anchor, but the new assignment wasn’t going very well.

“You know what? We’ll schedule a segment with her,” Nicolle said. “If it doesn’t go well, if there’s no chemistry, we won’t do any others.”

Meanwhile, the media blackout continued. It got so bad that a couple of times I had a friend in Anchorage track down phone numbers for me, and then I snuck in calls to folks like Rush Limbaugh, Laura Ingraham, Sean Hannity and someone I thought was Larry Kudlow but turned out to be Neil Cavuto’s producer. I had a friend call Bill O’Reilly after I was inundated with supporters in Alaska asking why the campaign was “ignoring” his one-air requests for a McCain campaign interview. I had another friend scrambling to find Mark Levin’s number. Aboard the campaign plane I was within twenty-five feet of reporters for hours on end. Headquarters’ strategy was that I should not go to the back of the aircraft and talk to the press. At first this was subtle, but as the campaign wore on, Tracey or Tucker would call headquarters to request permission, and someone in DC would respond, “No! Absolutely not- block her if she tries to go back.”

From this it looks like Wallace was in on the decision. Palin never said Wallace had the final say on the decision.

These idiots are walking right into a set up and they don’t even know it. Sarah is going to do to them what she did to the AK GOP. The Mac people forgot one of the fundamental truth about election, campaigns and political parties. If you have the people on your side you usually win. This is what happened up in AK. The DC elites and the GOP just do not see it coming and never will until its to late.

Dr. Carlo Lombardi on November 13, 2009 at 9:33 PM

That does not contradict the excerpt as presented in the other thread. In that purported excerpt, Palin says that Wallace kept selling a Couric interview and that Palin eventually agreed to it.

I’m curious to buy the book to see if that excerpt is actually lifted from the book. I’m suprised by it, because it portrays Palin as very passive. A strong exec would have made it clear to the hired help that they were talking to the next Vice-President of the United States, and that only the next President of the United States–personally- could refuse her anything.

Was Sarahcuda really anti-bailout? Hmmm.

No mystery about AP–he was all for it.

james23 on November 13, 2009 at 10:44 PM

Well, I think the campaign staff is actually showing rather than telling.

They are, of course, defensive. However, there are other ways to handle it besides the way they are doing it.

There was a good article on what went on, and Sarah has a few people who saw it the way she’s telling it. They already have been fighting with each other.

I take it that McCain really might be clueless as to what all was going on.

AnninCA on November 13, 2009 at 10:45 PM

Has Nicolle Wallace directly and personally refuted the conversation taking place as described by Palin? The is the only contradiction that might possibly matter.

Palin has so far demonstrated a track record of honesty though time and again she’s the target of what time after time turn out to be baseless and flat out false charges.

KittyLowrey on November 13, 2009 at 11:07 PM

Oh, and nice to see her upcoming interviews promoting her book is referred to as a “grand tour”.

KittyLowrey on November 13, 2009 at 11:09 PM

Slightly on the topic of Palin lying, the fact that Lynn Vincent’s name isn’t on the front cover of the book she co-wrote (at least) doesn’t do anything for Palin’s credibility.

angryed on November 13, 2009 at 11:40 PM

Based on this recent episode of Hardball you can see that the Far Left will NEVER, NEVER abandon the narrative that Palin is an idiot or moron.

That Matthews or the guy from the Nation would even hint that Palin has written nothing, including her Facebook entries or the book itself is preposterous. If you are anywhere rational the only way you could believe such rot is that you have been totally removed from the world or in a coma for the last year.

And then trying to claim that Palin falls well short of Reagan is an attempt to create a narrative if Palin is not the next Reagan why should you consider her for higher office?

That’s similar to saying Tom Brady will never be Joe Montana, so he should quit playing professional football as a QB.

Matthews tries to brand Palin as perhaps permanently damaged as a result of the Couric interview.

They try to belittle her as a back-stabber and liar.

But when it is all said and done this is a resurrection of the effort made by the MSM during the 2008 campaign to diminish and marginalize her.

The difference is now she has almost 1m members on her Facebook willing to defend her to the death and she no longer has to listen to McCain or his people.

Pfffft. Don’t sweat it. They’ve never, ever abandoned the narrative that Reagan was a moron, either. How many times was he mentioned during the fall-of-the-Berlin Wall festivities? Or Thatcher? Or John Paul II?

Tyrone Slothrop on November 13, 2009 at 9:31 PM

+100

Wallace & Schmidt are toxic waste. No self-respecting Republican will ever even consider hiring either of these clowns. Just the fact that Pawlenty hired a bunch of McCain campaign staff makes me never wanting to vote for him.

Maybe McCain himself was not directly involved in all of this crap. I’d like to give him the benefit of the doubt, but I frankly don’t know anymore.

Sarah was the sole shining light in the abyss know as the McCain Campaign.

Norwegian on November 14, 2009 at 12:36 AM

I don’t know all the behind the scenes goings on, but I do know this much. John McCains campaign was stagnant, almost to the brink of non existent, until Sarah came a long. Love her, or hate her, she lit a fire that has yet to burn out.

The staff of John McCain didn’t, and couldn’t have done for his campaign what Sarah did, and there is obviously a lot of jealousy, and animosity toward this woman. What I find truly sad is…this abuse, and crap not only came from the left, it came from a lot of Republicans as well, and for that…they look petty, vicious, and in the same line as the lying liberals, that did their damndest to make this woman cower, and run home with her tail between her legs.

capejasmine on November 14, 2009 at 12:38 AM

You want dumb, look no farther than Althouse:

1. She voted for obama
2. She cries when people don’t agree with her
3. She slept with one of her blog commenters

Blake on November 13, 2009 at 10:00 PM

Ouch…. That’s going to leave a mark.

All three are true though. I must say I have lost all respect for Althouse after her pathetically weak posting today.

Norwegian on November 14, 2009 at 12:41 AM

McCain’s career is nearing its end. Palin needs to figure out how to drive the news coming out from her book. Ideally, for her, the topics should bolster her position as a leader and agenda shaper. She should avoid the petty stuff with last year’s political hacks. She should be picking fights with Obama.

dedalus on November 13, 2009 at 8:51 PM

You mean like this:

Obama Administration’s Atrocious Decision

Horrible decision, absolutely horrible. It is devastating for so many of us to hear that the Obama Administration decided that the 9/11 terrorist mastermind, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, will be given a criminal trial in New York. This is an atrocious decision.

Mohammed and his terrorist co-conspirators are responsible for the deaths of more than 3,000 Americans. Thousands of American families have suffered through the loss of loved ones because of the disgusting attacks launched against the United States, and now this trial venue adds insult to injury, in addition to compromising our efforts in the War on Terror. Heaven forbid our allies see this decision as a reason to become less likely to support our efforts in the future.

Criminal defense attorneys will now enter into delaying tactics and other methods in the hope of securing some kind of win for their “clients.” The trial will afford Mohammed the opportunity to grandstand and make use of his time in front of the world media to rally his disgusting terrorist cohorts. It will also be an insult to the victims of 9/11, as Mohammed will no doubt use the opportunity to spew his hateful rhetoric in the same neighborhood in which he ruthlessly cut down the lives of so many Americans.

It is crucially important that Americans be made aware that the mastermind of the 9/11 attacks may walk away from this trial without receiving just punishment because of a “hung jury” or from any variety of court room technicalities. If we are stuck with this terrible Obama Administration decision, I, like most Americans, hope that Mohammed and his co-conspirators are convicted. Hang ‘em high.

I wholeheartedly support the survivors and the families of the victims in their appeal to the president regarding this matter. You can read more about it here.
