Top McCain aide: Palin’s lying about what happened with Couric
posted at 8:28 pm on November 13, 2009 by Allahpundit
You’ll be pleased to know that this comes on the same day that Maverick revealed he received a signed copy of “Going Rogue” in the mail. The inscription: “J– It’s my turn. –S.”
I’m kidding about that last part. Maybe.
Reflecting on the first set of interviews Palin did as the GOP vice presidential nominee, [Mark] Salter said that the sit downs were “discussed and agreed to by senior members of the campaign staff in consultation with the candidate” and that Wallace did not choose either the journalists or the outlets Palin spoke to.
“Nicolle Wallace, along with others, was tasked with helping the Governor prepare for some of her interviews. She did not decide which interview requests the candidates would accept. Nor was she tasked with securing the candidates’ agreement,” Salter said.
“Those decisions were made by campaign management in consultation with the candidates. Campaign management and the candidates agreed to multi-segment interviews so the Governor would maintain a presence in the media while she was in debate prep,” he added. “And to the best of my knowledge, any interviews the Governor had with the individuals she referred to were approved and arranged by the campaign management with her agreement.”
Former McCain strategist John Weaver was more direct in his criticism, slamming Palin for using the book for “petty and pathetic” score-settling.
“Sarah Palin reminds me of Jimmy Stewart in the movie ‘Harvey,’ complete with imaginary conversations. All books like these are revisionist and self-serving, by definition,” Weaver wrote in an email to POLITICO. “But the score-settling by someone who wants to be considered a serious national player is petty and pathetic.”
Not as harsh as Ann Althouse’s “Sarah Palin is dumb” takedown from this morning, but still plenty harsh. We’re in for a good, solid month of this sniping as she does her grand tour of cable news, aren’t we? Ah well. A toast — to easy content.
Here’s Palin defender Matthew Continetti appearing on “Hardball” this afternoon to plug his new book about her abuse by the media. And here’s the obligatory AP fact-check of her book. Was Sarahcuda really anti-bailout? Hmmm.

the_nile on November 13, 2009 at 8:31 PM
Wallace, as a former CBS employee and friend of Couric, could still have done this on her own. Salter was not necessarily present every time Wallace and Palin talked.
Wethal on November 13, 2009 at 8:31 PM
Perfectly fine for McCain’s “senior campaign officials” to anonymously trash Palin for MONTHS after the campaign — but petty and pathetic for her to tell her side of the story?
Mmmmhm.

Dear Senator McCain,
-
It is time to retire.

And take your Rino aids with you.

I’m not a defend-against-all Palin person, but McCain staff inspires suspicion.
exception on November 13, 2009 at 8:34 PM
I think Palin is a disaster, but I still believe she was screwed by the McCain campaign.
The lies about her will never stop, and this book thing is going to prolong the whole ridiculous saga.
I had hoped she would take a few years off, relax, reboot, and then come back, but, alas….
Nessuno on November 13, 2009 at 8:34 PM
Wasn’t John McCain the one that gave up on Mi. in the campaign and Sarah trying her best to visit Mi. and possibly land the state? I think I know whose side to put my faith in.
fourdeucer on November 13, 2009 at 8:35 PM
I would expect the campaign staff to rally around each other and around McCain. I don’t really object to the latter part of that – they owe him some loyalty.
As to Althouse and others (unquestionably we’ll have Frum linked here). Hey, let them dog-pile all they want. As long as Ace fisks their silliness, it’s worth it every time. I’ll read one mindless post by some net genius to prep me for an Ace evisceration every time.

We can only hope that Goldwater’s state would replace McCain with a better representative.
MeatHeadinCA on November 13, 2009 at 8:36 PM
It’s interesting that they’re no longer anonymous McCain aides, but are letting themselves be identified.
Wasn’t Weaver fired by McCain and replaced by Steve Schmidt?
Wethal on November 13, 2009 at 8:37 PM
Given the choice between believing John McCain and his campaign staff vs Sarah Palin, I’ll go with Palin.
Skandia Recluse on November 13, 2009 at 8:38 PM

Yes, Weaver was fired.
Enoxo on November 13, 2009 at 8:39 PM
Hmmm, who is the media afraid of????
ohiobabe on November 13, 2009 at 8:40 PM
The lies didn’t just attack Palin , they attacked her supporters to , she does the right thing opening it up. If they had protected her instead of leaks and attacks, she would have had something to be loyal to.
the_nile on November 13, 2009 at 8:40 PM
If McCain had been more like Goldwater instead of like McCain, he’d probably be president.
ncborn on November 13, 2009 at 8:40 PM
With staffers like these, who needs enemies?
I wish they would just shut the hell up.
NavyMustang on November 13, 2009 at 8:41 PM
Shut up.
You’re pulling an Ace of Spades with that. You have to be.
BadgerHawk on November 13, 2009 at 8:42 PM
The biggest loser in all of this: John McCain. Boy, will this hurt his primary chances in Arizona. The base despises anyone who attacks Palin, and rightfully so. This happened on McCain’s watch.
I don’t believe a word out of these McCain staffers’ mouths.
Also, I don’t want to see Nicole Wallace on ‘Hannity’ or any Fox News show again.
cubachi on November 13, 2009 at 8:43 PM
And as much as I like Althouse, that post was just stupid.
Palin’s at fault for not being assertive enough in managing herself during the campaign, but she should have deferred to McCain’s people because she was inexperienced.
BadgerHawk on November 13, 2009 at 8:43 PM
Yes, probably, but then McCain decided he was too Mavericky to actually step out of his MSM-mold.
MeatHeadinCA on November 13, 2009 at 8:44 PM
Gee, who to believe……
Mark Salter as told to Politico? Well, that’s 2 strikes.
Besides, Salter’s statement is that it was all done with senior campaign staff in consultation with the candidate, which is almost a non-statement.
We already know that anonymous campaign staffers trashed Palin with sometimes ridiculous falsehoods, so I think it’s clear who really needs to rehabilitate their images.

This is a CYA exercise. These staffers are not to be believed. I’ll take Sarah over these vermin anytime.
BetseyRoss on November 13, 2009 at 8:45 PM
Perhaps over the next 3 years,
Sarah can Rope-a-dope the Libs into a state of exhaustion.
-
I wonder why they simply don’t ignore her.
-
Or do they want her to be the candidate that Barry has the best chance to beat in 2012.
-
The NYT/MSM picked McMain because he was the easiest to win against in 2008.
-
They tried this with Bush senior in 1980.
-
Daily shories had him walking on water before the
convention because they didn’t want Regan to be president.
-
That didn’t work out to well for them.

The Republicans are more afraid of Sarah than the Dem’s. The only reason McCain came as close in the election as he did, was do to Sarah. Stay tuned to Rush on Tuesday, he will have Sarah live on his show. Next week will be great Rush and Sarah together and my 10 copies of her book. Guess what my liberal friends are getting for Christmas …LOL

I’m sure Sarah is just relating the tale as she saw from her point of view. Personally I know I never contributed to a political party in my life untill I sent the $11.00 to get a McCain Palin yardsign when he announced her as a running mate. I went on to bus out to Henderson Nevada for the campaign in the two weekends before the elections. McCain gave it away when he said that Obee was an honorable man. He should have said we should all be afraid of his policies.
The yard sign was stolen on the second day.

As Andrew Sullivan suggested: Let’s waterboard the whole stinking lot of them!
Mr. Joe on November 13, 2009 at 8:51 PM
McCain’s career is nearing its end. Palin needs to figure out how to drive the news coming out from her book. Ideally, for her, the topics should bolster her position as a leader and agenda shaper. She should avoid the petty stuff with last year’s political hacks. She should be picking fights with Obama.

Working my tail feather off~my new job doesn’t allow me to have HA up and running, so my time here is going to be limited for awhile. :(

HornetSting on November 13, 2009 at 8:52 PM
Sometime you just have to go with your gut, and mine says Sarah is an honest person. Political hacks – not so much.
So until I am proven wrong, all this garbage just makes me even more of a Palin supporter.
huckleberryfriend on November 13, 2009 at 8:52 PM
What cuts them out to be campaign staffers in the first place is their ability to all people “liars” with no basis in fact. Nothing in the testimony above actually conflicts on a factual (and even less a provable) basis with anything Palin said.
CK MacLeod on November 13, 2009 at 8:52 PM
I look forward to seeing Mrs. Palin disassembling the statist in the 2012 debates. Ol’ Sheriff Joe was just an appetizer. She’s going to clean the floor with the 0ne, then I’m going to revel in her election, then inauguration. The day after that, I become a troll at HotAir.

Wow…MSNBC messed up. They played the CBS clip a little longer than I’ve seen it before. Has anyone else heard Palin say “Alaska isn’t a foreign country” before? I haven’t seen it in the MSM. That has been Palin’s point all along, that she took Couric’s question as a put down that she was from Alaska, and this clip shows that this true.

I wish these McCain losers would realize that without Palin, they would have lost by double digits. The ONLY time they were ahead was after Palin came on the scene. McCain screwed himself by “suspending” his campaign and voting for that POS TARP bill. Bah. I voted for Palin and against Obama, not FOR McCain. I am sure I am not the only one.

Sorry I’m more inclined to believe Palins version of events at this stage than a) anything coming from former McCain campaign staffers (who by the way are probably vying for campaign staff jobs for 2010 at the moment an need to justify themselves to potential new bosses) and b) the MSM who over the last twelve months, when it comes to Sarah Palin has demonstrated a complete lack credibility, ethics and journalistic integrity.

Who’s telling the truth? Well we’ll probably never know for sure since we’re dealing with “he said, she said.” People can make up their minds regarding who is more credible.
But at the end of the day, if the only thing Palin accomplishes the rest of her life is assuring that none of these staffers will ever again be in a position to screw up a Republican campaign, she will have performed a valuable service to the country.
Erich66 on November 13, 2009 at 9:02 PM
It is time for McCain to step down in Arizona. Pass the reins to a conservative who can win.
And McCain’s staff are full of shit. I do not trust any of them. Granted, I do not care to hear Sarah whine because it does not help her in the long run. But I trust her more than Schmidty the Bald Headed Buthead.

She should just allow MSNBC and “anonymous McCain staffers” to tell the tale?
joey24007 on November 13, 2009 at 9:06 PM
Not the best simile for someone trying to say “she’s lying”. In “Harvey”, Elwood (Jimmy Stewart) is the only one who can see Harvey, and the pooka is most certainly there. In fact, as becomes quite obvious, the only one who is honest and who knows what’s really going on is Elwood — and the tactics and motives of his relatives are quite disreputable. Getting back to Harvey, the “imaginary” friend is quite capable of physically affecting the world around him if he chooses.
So, if Sarah Palin is to be equivalenced to Elwood P Dowd, all the more power to her.

Wallace was brought in as a “communications director” specifically to manage Palin’s media engagements. She may not have made the final decision but her input would almost certainly have been influential.
And John Weaver skewering anyone for “petty and pathetic point scoring” is laughable. This turd was fired by McCain in Summer 2007 and spent the rest of the election cycle as the MSM’s Rent-A-Gob whining about McCain’s “rightward turn”.

I mean, seriously, how do you lose to a guy like this?
regardless of what you think of Palin, McCain had the WORST campaign staff ever. It’s as if a bunch of children ran his campaign. While I worry about the Obama administration, I am not sure McCain would have been any better. Look at the people he surrounded himself with and trusted to make decisions on his behalf.
