Top McCain aide: Palin’s lying about what happened with Couric

You’ll be pleased to know that this comes on the same day that Maverick revealed he received a signed copy of “Going Rogue” in the mail. The inscription: “J– It’s my turn. –S.”

I’m kidding about that last part. Maybe.

Reflecting on the first set of interviews Palin did as the GOP vice presidential nominee, [Mark] Salter said that the sit downs were “discussed and agreed to by senior members of the campaign staff in consultation with the candidate” and that Wallace did not choose either the journalists or the outlets Palin spoke to.

“Nicolle Wallace, along with others, was tasked with helping the Governor prepare for some of her interviews. She did not decide which interview requests the candidates would accept. Nor was she tasked with securing the candidates’ agreement,” Salter said.

“Those decisions were made by campaign management in consultation with the candidates. Campaign management and the candidates agreed to multi-segment interviews so the Governor would maintain a presence in the media while she was in debate prep,” he added. “And to the best of my knowledge, any interviews the Governor had with the individuals she referred to were approved and arranged by the campaign management with her agreement.”

Former McCain strategist John Weaver was more direct in his criticism, slamming Palin for using the book for “petty and pathetic” score-settling.

“Sarah Palin reminds me of Jimmy Stewart in the movie ‘Harvey,’ complete with imaginary conversations. All books like these are revisionist and self-serving, by definition,” Weaver wrote in an email to POLITICO. “But the score-settling by someone who wants to be considered a serious national player is petty and pathetic.”

Not as harsh as Ann Althouse’s “Sarah Palin is dumb” takedown from this morning, but still plenty harsh. We’re in for a good, solid month of this sniping as she does her grand tour of cable news, aren’t we? Ah well. A toast — to easy content.

Here’s Palin defender Matthew Continetti appearing on “Hardball” this afternoon to plug his new book about her abuse by the media. And here’s the obligatory AP fact-check of her book. Was Sarahcuda really anti-bailout? Hmmm.

While I’m sure this makes sense in that one little corner of your own mind, got a translation for the non-basement-dwelling members of the general public?

voxpopuli on November 14, 2009 at 3:29 AM

I seem to see Ann Althouse’s rant differently.

Ann picks a passage from “Going Rogue: An American Life” that describes the typical relationship between a professional and a client (much like the relationship of a lawyer and client) then proceeds to invoke the Otter defense .. You fucked up – you trusted us!

Does Ann treat her clients (or students) this way ? Are they all “dumb” as well ?

Frankly, it shows just how unprofessional the McCain campaign staff really was, that they would jerk Palin around like this.

The American people are not that irresponsible to elect a moron/drama-queen as POTUS.

AprilOrit on November 13, 2009 at 9:07 PM

I didn’t know you were even running.

The American people are not that irresponsible to elect a moron/drama-queen as POTUS.

I’d love to believe that, but President Clinton and President Obama both prove you wrong.

Greg Q on November 14, 2009 at 4:21 AM

Of course, once again Allah posts the Sarah critics allegation as fact.

You are really a piece of garbage Allah. Why don’t you just apply at DU and get it over with you liberal $#!thead?

Mr Purple on November 14, 2009 at 7:04 AM

Mr Purple needs to calm down.

Personally I don’t believe the McCain Campaign. While it may be true they consulted her before hand, I have a feeling Nicole Wallace did her best to sell Palin on Couric as her first/second interview.

I mean everybody knows Couric was in the toilet after she left the Today’s show. Nobody took her remotely serious. In fact she only got the recognition after her Palin interview. And she rode that wave as far as it would take her. And now, well at least until the book came out, no one paid attention to Couric-again. She got an award for her Palin interview and it was far from a hard hitting interview or investigation. Granted Plain screwed up on one question, but after reading the transcript, you can tell they did their best to paint her in a bad light. There was plenty of better footage they choose not to use. So Couric got her accolades from making Palin look bad and nothing more than that.

Eh. Maybe after the book, it’ll start back up again. Couric will get some more attention and another award.

You guys above are right. Good thing we don’t have a conceited, whiner as Potus with a list of enemies.

Wait….

It kind of appears that Palin and Salter are in agreement here. Palin has only stated that Nicolle talked her into the interview. How does that disagree with what Salter is claiming?

kcarpenter on November 14, 2009 at 9:21 AM

The AP ‘fact check’ story is a glaring example of how we got the JEIC (jug ears in chief) as our current president.

If you libturd tools that fancy yourselves as journalists had done hit vetting pieces on Obamao we wouldn’t be here today.

But, then again, that’s the agenda right? Hold others to some standard that you yourselves cannot even meet.

Err, wait, you have no standards, so NM.

OkieDoc on November 14, 2009 at 9:48 AM

It took ten AP reporters to come up with that list of checked facts? Really?

ddrintn on November 14, 2009 at 9:59 AM

So Candidates will think twice before hiring the folks who lost McCain and Palin the election. Seems straight forward to me. “Buyer Beware” Kind of like a politicians “Angie’s List” Don’t let these people anywhere near your campaign LOL!

Face it, if they were all that, McCain/Palin would have won the election. Obviously Team Obama was much BETTER. So who gets hired for upcoming elections when Palin marks them defective in her Book?

That’s why they are critical of her book – consider the source ALWAYS.

Dude, did you even read the wiki links you posted? did you note the references of the origins of the terms and to whom they apply today?

You must be a product of the government run educational system. Context man, context.

OkieDoc on November 14, 2009 at 10:16 AM

But the score-settling by someone who wants to be considered a serious national player is petty and pathetic.

Um, dude. You guys ran an incompetent campaign, and the only reason why you didn’t get blown out is her.

spmat on November 14, 2009 at 10:35 AM

I don’t know enough, now at least, to say who’s right or who’s wrong on this issue. However, the Democrats just elected a man to the presidency who was less qualified for his job than Sarah Palin was for hers and the strategy of the McCain campaign allowed that to happen.

The campaign should have known that things weren’t going to be easy when the press sent 30 reporters to Alaska, to dig up dirt versus none to Chicago to dig up dirt. Sort of fills you in as to where the media was during the election.

Obama’s campaign has admitted they controlled the media where the McCain campaign (so used to the previously fawning media he got) believed they’d get the same treatment. They should have known, when Charlie started looking distainfully over the rims of his glasses at Sarah, things were going to be tough.

So, whether she’s right or wrong, the campaign strategy was obviously not worth the paper it wasn’t written on. For the McCain campaign crew to insinuate they had a clue is just a joke.

AP ‘fact check’

That’s comedy gold right there. Y’all could a stadium with that kind of info. Oh wait, you tried that in Denver didn’t you?

I get the impression these McCain staffers are worried they might have problems getting jobs with conservative candidates. Then again, this can all be explained by them being merely venal little twits.

aikidoka on November 14, 2009 at 1:01 PM

Palin’s Facebook post….
As you probably have heard, the AP snagged a copy of my memoir, Going Rogue, before its Tuesday release. And as is expected, the AP and a number of subsequent media outlets are erroneously reporting the contents of the book. Keep your powder dry, read the book, and enjoy it! Lots of great stories about my family, Alaska, and the incredible honor it was to run alongside Senator John McCain.

We can’t wait to hit the road and meet so many on the book tour! See you in Michigan first…

- Sarah Palin

njpat on November 14, 2009 at 1:13 PM

I’m sure Sarah told it like it was about the McCain staffer’s. What a bunch of boobs!

MCGIRV on November 14, 2009 at 2:35 PM

In other news, the AP is promoting “Going Rouge” in a roundabout sort-of-way:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091114/ap_en_ot/us_palin_s_book_coattails

Oh, and they’re still going on about Bristol:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091114/ap_en_ce/us_palin_bristol

And they say the media’s biased! Luuuuuuuul
