Obama: We’re totally cutting the deficit, um, next year

A very special message from the same guy who wants you to believe that universal health care will be “deficit-neutral.” Even Politico’s reporters can’t help laughing at him:
President Barack Obama plans to announce in next year’s State of the Union address that he wants to focus extensively on cutting the federal deficit in 2010 – and will downplay other new domestic spending beyond jobs programs, according to top aides involved in the planning…
All presidents promise deficit reduction – and almost always fall short. There is good reason to be skeptical of this White House, too, on its commitment.
For starters, the White House has not dropped plans for an aggressive global warming bill early next year that will be loaded with new spending on green technology and jobs – that would be paid for with tax increases. Democratic lobbyist Steve Elmendorf says the White House focus on deficit reduction could easily kill the cap-and-trade effort. “I think this means cap-and-trade has to go to the backburner,” he said.
Additionally, there is no evidence Democrats are willing to aggressively cut the biggest parts of the budget, such as entitlement programs and defense. Former President Bill Clinton told Senate Democrats at their policy lunch this week that one of the biggest reasons to finish health care is to allow Obama to focus on economic concerns next year – in part with more spending. Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) said afterward that Clinton had advised getting health care out of the way to “clear the tables and allow the focus to be on jobs and education and infrastructure.” None of that is free.
Says Byron York, surveying the bloodbath in Virginia last week, “So now — well, not actually now, but after passing the massive national health care bill — they have resolved to attempt to convince those independents that they’re not seeing what they’re seeing.” Precisely. Imagine how total The One’s belief in his own ability to B.S. must be that after the stimulus, TARP II, the nationalization of GM, and ObamaCare, he’s actually planning to sell himself as a deficit hawk — while still pushing for cap-and-trade. If he gets voters to buy it, it’ll be a mind trick on par with the “these aren’t the droids we’re looking for” scene in Star Wars. Exit question: Since this is completely politically motivated and designed as damage control for the midterms, I’m guessing the deficit reduction will be done purely through spending cuts (and donations!). When does he finally get around to talking about our inevitable tax hikes? The day after election day in 2012, right?
Update: A question from the comments: Does this mean The One’s a “teabagger” now?

This is the rhetoric for ‘10 and ‘12 as well. Those who pay attention know better, but the voting public? Remains to be seen.

This was the major reason for the attacks on Fox: they’re bleeding independents and moderates who are worried about this debt and other economic policies.
And those folks are increasingly turning to Fox for news/commentary.

So their cutting the deficit next year. You mean like when they start collecting taxes for the new health care fiasco before they actually start spending money on it? Nice trick there Bambi.
rockhead on November 13, 2009 at 5:34 PM
Easy: Just retreat from Afghanistan and Iraq, and every other foreign base. Then slash the military by 90%. Then create that “civilian security force” as a jobs program. Then increase taxes by 800%. Then hyperinflate the dollar so that the national debt is about the same value as a couple of loaves of bread. Then confiscate all property.
Problem solved.

Actually, cap-and-trade needs to go into the toilet, flushed thoroughly, never to see the light of day again. “Skyrocketing utilities…” I understand that. Heat is a big deal to me in the winter.
I have always listened to what Obama says. Sometimes, even with Obama, words mean something…and this cap and trade is something really BAD.
As for cutting the deficit…that just means Barack wants more taxes.

He’s going to copy FDR again. Obama is going to make the budget deficit neutral by raising the top tax rate to what it was in 1933, 63%. And by top he means anybody with a job.

Most of the Dems who voted for Obama don’t care about the deficit. They just want their Obama money.
If independents don’t leave him in droves, then America is in deep deep trouble.
hawksruleva on November 13, 2009 at 5:44 PM
Need I point out something blatantly obvious?
With the Stimulus, we’re at a.. $1.7 trillion deficit? If he only spends $1.5 trillion, he’s cut the deficit by $200 billion.
So, for any future President, they should spend $2 trillion into the red their first year, then spend the next 7 spending not quite as much as $2 trillion and claiming you’re a fiscal conservative.
Nethicus on November 13, 2009 at 5:44 PM
They’ll try to cut the deficit by raising tax rates
which ,as in the past, will result in less tax revenue.

Then he anounces from overseas that he’s going to reduce the deficit right after sticking this nation with a multi-trillion dollar government healthcare take-over.
When do impeachment hearings begin?
Rovin on November 13, 2009 at 5:53 PM
He’s already charged all his spending to his first year in office. That’s how he’ll claim to have cut the deficit later. He’s already “bought” the money that he hasn’t spent yet, and so it will look like the deficit has declined. But it’s only a “cut” because the deficit it’s compared to includes money that he’s still spending.

Thank you and it looks we are headed in that direction as much as it hurts to think it.

Cutting this deficit in half is nothing, really, because half of it is more than it ever was under previous presidents.
Lib tries to boost Obama, with embarrassing Bush and all Republicans as their main goal, aren’t valid or so much as intelligent.
If libs ran their personal budgets the way the government does they might face RICO charges. But they don’t get it. To libs it’s Dem vs. Pub, and the country and their fellow citizens be damned. Don’t believe me? Look at what the libs who infect this site post–their own words.
Note how the libs who post here speak of Bush and Republicans, instead of what’s best for the country and their fellow citizens.

By year 2 Obama will create about 70% of the debt Bush did in 8 years. So I’d call that chance slim to none.
Chuck Schick on November 13, 2009 at 5:56 PM
BTW, he and the Dems are in a box now (well, they put the entire country in a box, but anyway…). We are well on our way to a double dip recession/depression…raise taxes (even if he just let’s the Bush tax cuts lapse) and the economy instantly implodes like a black hole. Yet, there is no way he’ll betray his nutroot base by cutting spending…his entire being is constructed of massive expansion of government and spending. At the same time, every day the economy continues to slide, the more people become away of smoke and mirrors. I suspect he’ll just make up some ‘created or saved jobs’ BS like he did with porkulus…an ongoing farce of epic proportions. He’ll just claim a bunch of non-existent cuts or keep right on doing what he’s doing.

Obama/Pelosi/Reid may drop it, but the EPA won’t. They’ll enact CO2 controls/cap’n trade as part of their on-going assault on hazardous air pollutants currently underway. That’s why he’s floating this possibility out there now. That’s why ObaMao continues to put the numbers of escalated troops for a surge into monetary figures rather than as a means of defeating the Taliban and alQuaeda. He wants that money for domestic programs instead.

The Afghan War was DOA as soon as our Affirmative Action Hero was elected. He is building an excuse that we will not lose since we could not win since we had no clear objectives. He is also pulling for the troops to find OBL so he can declare victory and leave.
What is killling Him is that President Bush eventually showed extreme courage and WON in Iraq.
The Dems haven’t won a war since WWII and that war was esentially just a question of time (albeit a horrible meatgrinder and economy test) by the time we got into it. And I shall not mention the sun never rising on the Kenyan Empire as that might be considered racist.

These deficit cuts are like what the Dems did in 90s when the Pubs had Congress. The Dems wanted a 10% increase in the school lunch program, the Pubs three percent. They all settled on six percent.
Ten minutes after the agreement, the Dems were out before their MSM cronies screaming the Pub CUT the program.
Same thing here, but in reverse. If the Dems want a 12% increase but decide on 10%, they’ll call it it cut. Never mind the deficit is going UP by 10%.
Man, if we could manage our personal finances in the same way without being charged under RICO!
