Napolitano: Hey, 2010 will be a good year for an immigration debate

posted at 3:35 pm on November 13, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Showing the kind of political instincts that have driven the Obama administration’s poll numbers into negative territory already, Janet Napolitano declared that she expects Congress to take up comprehensive immigration reform … in an election year.  Settling the legal status of illegal workers in a country suffering from double-digit unemployment already apparently qualifies as a higher priority than creating jobs and fixing the economy for people in the country legally for the DHS Secretary  — but as Jammie Wearing Fool notes, we’ll need the jail space after ObamaCare passes:

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano expressed confidence Friday that Congress would introduce a comprehensive immigration reform bill in early 2010 and that debate and passage of the legislation could occur before the mid-term elections later that year.

A lot has changed since Congress last debated the issue in 2007, Napolitano asserted in a major policy speech at the Center for American Progress in Washington, DC.

Yes, much has changed since the debacle of 2007, but not in the way Napolitano thinks.  The economy crashed, for one thing, throwing millions of citizens and legal residents out of work.  Legitimizing cheap labor isn’t exactly a great strategy to get those people working again, and suddenly making immigration reform a priority in the midst of a deep recession is going to go over like a lead balloon.

JWF half-jokes about the incongruity of threatening Americans with prison time for not buying health insurance while looking to give amnesty to illegal aliens, but that’s about as foolish a political combination as could possibly be imagined.  Are Democrats really more interested in enforcing criminal penalties for unconstitutional mandates to buy insurance than they are in enforcing legitimate immigration laws?  Because that’s what Napolitano suggests in her political prognostication.  You can bet that those mandates and their enforcement will form a core argument from Republicans against a push for amnesty — and that they’ll make sure to let Blue Dog district voters know which set of lawbreakers interest Democrats more.

That’s part of what makes a push for immigration reform so unlikely in an election year.  Obama may have been thinking that he could split Republicans in 2010 by pushing the issue, but few in the GOP will go along with amnesty or Amnesty Lite with unemployment in the US above 10%.  They will demand action on economic growth and tell the DHS to just do their jobs in enforcing immigration law.  And in 2010, many Americans will agree with that set of priorities — and wonder at the Democrats’ set — as they go to the polls.

Am I missing anything in this agenda?

Obama may have been thinking that he could split Republicans in 2010 by pushing the issue, but few in the GOP will go along with amnesty or Amnesty Lite with unemployment in the US above 10%.

I still think that’s actually a potentially dangerous area.

It seems kind of unlikely to see amnesty supporters argue that they could only support in during an economic boom – that basically concedes that the legislation is horrible and can only be passed when people are placated with other stuff. If President Obama pressed forward I bet he could still get McCain and Graham to spearhead the issue.

Whatever is really going on must be huge because there is more distraction going on here than in a normal Obama distraction drop 24 hours.

The media’s providing the distraction for them. Here’s an AP article titled Army says morale down among troops in Afghanistan. No notice of the role President Dithers might be playing in this.

Then there’s this quote from the article:

There is also perhaps equal new attention focused on the mental health of the force since a shooting rampage at Fort Hood last week in which an Army psychiatrist is charged.

Don’t waste your time looking for the words “Muslim,” “Jihad,” or “terrorist act.” He’s just a simple “army psychiatrist.”

And this was filed 6 minutes ago.

Perfect timing.

Obama knows that the only people who won’t pay for Obamacare are ‘right-wing, anti-government teabaggers’, so they get thrown in jail.

Once they are in jail and illegals are suddenly citizens, there won’t be anyone to stand in the way of a Democrat controlled USA.

I think it’s a perfect time for that debate. I just heard Nancy Pelosi talk the other day about imprisoning those who benefit from the America system without paying for those services. She said that’s unfair, and justified jail time for offenders…hold on…this just in. I’m being told that Pelosi’s statements were directed at law abiding U.S. citizens and NOT, I repeat, NOT foreign citizens burdening our current system. Sooooooo…never mind. In other news, Hasan snapped, while those who listen to Glenn Beck are extreme terrorists; KSM has the right to be assumed innocent in a court of law, even though he’s already confessed his guilt; and the best way to reduce our deficit is to add a two trillion dollar entitlement.

lorien1973 on November 13, 2009 at 3:43 PM

I think even the GOP has learned its lesson after 2007. Sure there are the McCains and Grahamnestys who still support immigration reform, but they’ll keep their lids shut in an election year with the party poised to gain tons of seats in both houses.

If the Dems’ plan with amnesty is to rile up the Hispanic voters and split the GOP, the outcome will be the exact opposite. They’ll rile up every other constituency in the country against them and cause even more headaches for their more moderate members.

Doughboy on November 13, 2009 at 3:57 PM

It’s not about poll numbers.

Like health care, cap and trade, porkulus, et al – immigration reform will be about ramming something down our throats that yes, may mean the loss of some political capital and Democrat congressional seats, but will fundamentally alter the landscape of American society.

*That’s* the goal.

And once it’s altered, it won’t easily change. Very little in DC get’s ‘un-done’ once it’s put in place.

The Dems realize they have a once in a lifetime – maybe once in a few hundred years opportunity to change America to what *they* want it to be. If doing so means they lose some seats (and maybe the Presidency) in the short term, so be it; they won’t care.

I’m thinking this could kill more than one bird with a rock. The minute the offending illegal signs up for amnesty, ask where he’s working, do they provide healthcare, are they getting assistance, etc.? If so, issue a Social Security card, check their IRS standings to see if they’ve ever filed and paid any taxes (if not issue a bill), and sign them up for gubmint healthcare right then and there.

The woman knows – and so does the fraud in the White House – that Senator McCain, among other “Rs”, will support their amnesty legislation. Not to mention another “do it for Ted Kennedy” movement. It would cause a further rift within the Republican party and, therefore, dilute the political loses during the mid-terms. Not a bad idea….if it works out that way. BUT, as mentioned, the times have changed dramatically and far too many blue dogs would watch their reelection hopes turn into nightmares. Personally, I hope they go for it. I love to watch the losers cry on election night!

1. Check out OutragedPatriots daily.

2. “Amnesty” under any name, in any form, in moderation or not, is a BUNCH OF CRAP, to use a technical phrase.

“pathway to citizenship”, “legalization”, ad nauseum, is as absurd as allowing a convicted burglar to keep the stolen jewelry, after paying a fine.

Amnesty grants the convicted invader his stolen goods – residency. How will that influence future potential invaders? Duh.

And for a litmus test on the real intentions of the amnesty crowd:

How much time did the “comprehensive reform” bills allow for the FBI and HHS to conduct background criminal checks and health checks on illegal aliens before automatically granting them permanent legal residency by default?

In 2006 – 90 calendar days

In 2007 – McCain, et al, changed this to ONE BUSINESS DAY.

Plenty of time to run checks on 12 to 30 million invaders, huh??

So let me finish. The Sec of Homeland Security:

wants open borders
thinks war veterans and conservatives pose a threat
assures Muslims that the U.S. can improve our PC-ness
believes the threat of infectious disease is overstated

We created this department in response to 9/11. Does ANYONE see the irony? (Besides HA commenters.)

Obama needs a Bush think tank to figure this shamnesty strategery all out. Bipartisanmanship and all that. McCain and Graham can lead it in for the big win. Go team!

If history holds, unemployment peaks 1 year after a recession ends. So if positive growth holds going forward, and that is a BIG if, unemployment will peak in late summer early fall next year. Have fun Dems.

Key word here is AFTER. Where’s the graph proving the recession has ended? These buffoons are granting me and my family a generational boon. No more dhimmicraps forever.

One day my grandchildren will be asking me about how bad it was before the country woke up and ran the dhimmicraps out of DC. They are going to be dumbfounded when I explain the wholesale stupidity flowing out of our capitol.

FREEDOM!
