Gingrich: The RNC’s preparing a new Contract With America, sort of
posted at 7:15 pm on November 13, 2009 by Allahpundit
Actually, he says Steele’s working on a statement of “first principles” which might serve as the seed for a new Contract-type platform. Which is super, except that the GOP’s whole problem right now is that conservatives don’t believe them anymore. They have no credibility with the base, which is why (a) Republican party ID is on life support even as “conservative” self-identification is ticking upwards, (b) CPAC’s handing its keynote slot to the main challenger of the NRSC’s favored candidate, and (c) grassroots conservatives are flocking to self-styled “outsiders” like Palin, Doug Hoffman, and Glenn Beck, who’s got plenty of “first principles” ideas of his own to offer them. Under normal circumstances, a site like Red State should be a reliable advocate for the party. Instead, it spent the last few weeks targeting the Republican nominee in NY-23 and today is calling for firings at the RNC over the revelation that there’s an abortion elective in the group’s health insurance plan. Steele himself is nearing the point of toxicity. Not good. So why should we think anyone’s particularly going to care about a statement of first principles? If there’s a GOP wave next year, it’ll be pure disgust at Democratic statism that drives it, not any renewed confidence that the Republicans have embraced their inner libertarians.
Also, how did Gingrich, of all people, end up being the one to break this news? Just today, there’s a new story about him warning the base how “destructive” it’ll be if they go around targeting Republicans with third-party challenges. As I’ve said all along, his point is very well taken, but after the Scozzafava debacle he’s the last guy who should be acting as a liaison to grassroots right-wingers.

Newt… get a clue. You are not wanted!
Steele… get a clue. You are going to be out of the RNC soon!
tired of fakes and party line stupidity.

Keep it, you disengenuous publicity seeking hack. The RNC can just STFU and let us find our own Conservative candidates, and stop trying to shove RINOs down our throats.
tickleddragon on November 13, 2009 at 7:18 PM
The Republican Party is through setting the agenda for conservatism.
Let the Dems run things for a few more years and see how far RINOs get when they slip up and expose themselves as Dem-lites.
Dr. ZhivBlago on November 13, 2009 at 7:19 PM
What will the contract say, that conservatives need to shut the he1l up while the elites tell us what great candidates they have for upcoming elections?
After Scoffalavalava, any GOP contract needs to have its fine print scrutinized.
Bishop on November 13, 2009 at 7:20 PM
Yep…that he didn’t get the message is not surprising. I’m not sure who he thinks he’s talking to anymore. And every other week, I see a new picture of him next to Al Sharpton…credibility? Horse, barn, door, gone.

People are tired of the weak political leadership and have decided to take matters into their own hands.
If they can’t get on board they should just get out of the way.
We don’t need them.

Two areas Newt wants addressed are the environment and education.
On the first – do we get more of the global warming hoax he fell for on the sofa with Nancy?
On the second: shouldn’t the federal governemnt butt out and leave it to local authorities?

Newt made mistakes but he’s 100 miles away from the problems at the heart of Republicans. As long as he’s not advocating moving to the center (he’s not!), then he can be a force to push the Republicans in the right direction.

Criticize Newt when he slips up, but jeez. Judging by the comments, you’d think he was Obama’s clone or something. He’s not.

Have you noticed all the “Republicans” scrambling to somehow be tied to the teaparty movement in an effort to somehow show they are in touch with the pulse of the people…. and trying as hard as they can to try to be in front of and benefit from all the excitement and possibly to try to make sure the Sarah Palin doesn’t get all the momenturm from it and leave them behind…
I see Dick Armey is even a little jealous today for the attention Sarah is getting… does his ego think he will lose his position as a “leader” of that movement…
some of these so called Republican leaders sure have fragile egos and seem to be a little too narcissistic… look at Michael Steele trying to burnish his “black cred” with that liberal racebaiting dolt from CNN, Roland “Fat and Rollie” Martin when he said white Republicans were afraid of him… more like afraid of what stupid thing he was going to say next… another narcissistic idiot only interested in “himself”
this is why both the so called elites in both parties don’t like Sarah Palin…. she makes them look like narcissistic little pissants

The Pubs, led to some measure by Newt (who would name their son after a salamander? That’s as bad as a boy name Sue), botched the first Contract.

I got a call from a solicitor for College Republicans who wanted me to listen to a recorded message from Newt, participate in a poll and give money.
I declined all 3 offers and told the young lady, as kindly as possible, that I wanted no part of a party which included Newt as a part of its intelligencia.
I mentioned the pathetic decision by Newt to endorse Scozzafava over a true conservative and explained to her that he had helped facilitate the destruction and demise of the party with which I had identified for 35 years.
I somehow think that she will get a lot of blowback from people like me and that they will get the message that RINOs can’t raise money anymore.
She said that they wanted to re-build the party from the ground up with young people, and I explained to her that any re-building would be the result of the GOP’s gravitating to a movement which was going on outside of the RNC and with the people.
Good riddance to Newt, GWB, Mike Steele, most of the Rs in the House and Senate.
molonlabe28 on November 13, 2009 at 7:48 PM
The Republican party would not need a new contract if they had not broken the first one. Their abysmal failures domestically lead a majority of Americans to vote for Obama. I take little solace in the fact that Democrats are 10 times worse at governing than the Democrats.
Shtetl G on November 13, 2009 at 7:48 PM
Unfortunately, we don’t have that luxury. If we don’t take back at least one house of Congress in 2010, at least enough to blockade some of Obama’s Socialist agenda, we can kiss the country goodbye.

The Dede endorsement was indefensible, as is his Global Warming position.
But he advocates so pretty slick politicking without advocating Republicans dump conservatism the way, say, Frum does. For instance, his American Solutions things pushes some squishy stuff, but because he’s trying to stake out popular “solutions” that are actually consistent with conservatism but have broad support.
He’s no conservative icon, but as a Republican, it could be much much worse. (What up?)

I’m sure all the DNC pundits & operatives are glad that Newt is spearheading this.
As far as the RNC elite leadership goes, I understand their reluctance to relinquish any “BIG TENT” we can run BIG GOVERNMENT better than those other guys strategy. It is what the mantra we’ve been hearing now for over two years at least. They thought that they could persuade the flyover country’s middle whereby the Independants would flock to them. Choose Republican Lite over the Falsely claiming Democrat- Yes We Can whereby promising everything-Lite. It didn’t work.
The pandering corrupt democrats did a better job of [lying] making exagerated campaign promises [95% of you will not see a tax increase, etc, ... ] they couldn’t keep to the misinformed and gullible public {with a lot of help from the liberal media}. So, Socialist-Liberal-Democrat – Statist won.
Now the RNC thinks it can be trusted again with leading the country out of this “spreading the wealth” Socialist – Liberal – Democratic Government where you will be put in jail if you choose not to participate in HR3200. With brilliant minds like the RNC has now, what else could go wrong?

Newt,
Whatever you’re proposing better be understandable by the 53% of the American populace that elected that immature Kenyan, and the snotty, petulant, childish brats now in charge of our government.
You don’t need HISTORY, or FACTS, or TRUTH in your message…
All you need is a slick techno-package that will resonate with the eight-second attention span of the shallow doofuses who now represent a majority of our voting population.
Give ‘em a message like, somethin’ “edgy” with just a hint of “go f*ck yourself” and you’ll win them over …. maybe for a day or two.
Realize, however that they’re fickle and will tune your message out in a heartbeat if something better sounding comes along.
They’re not very smart.

Triangulating a position paper to give the impression of having passionate convictions, while at the same time leaving all options open for your own future political maneuvering, can take years. Or even (as in Newt’s case) decades.
But if you actually HAVE core values that you’re not afraid to express, all you need to do is simply write them down. It really doesn’t take that long.

Is it just me or are the same people who are calling for “Moderates” like Newt Gingrich and Michael Steele to be thrown out of the GOP the same ones advocating third Party Conservative Candidates? Just how does that work out? We have a more conservative GOP run a candidate and an even more conservative third party run a candidate while the far left that sticks to one Democrat candidate at a time walks to victory.
Ronald Reagan was right when he said that someone who votes with me 80% of the time is a friend and an ally not a 20% traitor. Reid, Pelosi, and Obama are 100% wrong on the stimulus boondogle, Obamacare, Cap & Trade, Card Check, Closing Guantanamo and making the war on Terror a minor police matter for the Justice Dept. to handle with Marquis de Queensbury rules of legal engagement. Conservatives are doing nothing but complaining. I assume you recognize how much of a disaster Obama has been in such a short time in office. So you should be working in favor the only party that can stop what’s going on. That party is never going to be a perfect, purist party. You can’t complain that the Republicans are alienating conservatives, while at the same time, throwing around terms like “RINO.” RINO is a divisive term and it’s only going to help the Democrats in the next election. NY-23 should be a lesson for both the Republican party and conservative constituents. The two need to be in sync or else both candidates fail.

RNC is THE place where Sarahcuda can have the greatest impact on the party and the country, without rising to the level of incompetence. She is the only right-of-center person in America who can stay on message, she is proving to be a master of new media, her fundraising prowess goes without saying, she can both marginalize the “mavericks” and give the Rubio’s and DeVores room to run and support when they need it.

Yeah, I hear you guys and know where you’re coming from. But, do you really think that if the Republicans sweep the 2010 elections it will really make any difference? I gave up that notion months ago.
These Leftists are too powerful and it hasn’t happened overnight. We as a group are largely to blame for letting it happen. We failed to keep a balance in the organs of government, the media, academia and other important facets of society due to our collective reverse-elitism. Given the appalling political correctness, pussy-footedness, and the Socialist-inspired memes that so many fellow Conservatives buy into, makes me think that we’ve already had one leg kicked out from under us and don’t even realize it.
Fortunately, we are (slowly but surely I think) freeing ourselves from the Marxist BS fed to us via our collective pop culture that’s rendered us complacent and impotent for so long. We just have to dig deeper and question said BS more often and more boldly, and leave our comfort zones and quit taking the State-supplied Soma completely. But, I just don’t know if that will happen to enough of us to make any real difference?

(& tell us, Carol, if he answers correctly, what does he win? Is it a new Prius?! That’s right, with over 600 years of crabon offsets!)
Now answer the question, mike_NC9, but answer correctly . . .

Partial rough draft, but it’s a start.

What is with all the conservatives on this site? Don’t you realize we’ve already won?
There is nothing left to do but execute (implement) the strategy. The strategy of supporting (finances, grunt work, etc) individuals rather than the party (GOP).
The Tea Parties are all united in the core beliefs of conservatism – it does not matter if the GOP “gets” it or not.
All the Tea Parties have to do to control the outcome is to vet individuals and circulate the results. Party ID does not matter any more. What matters is whether Tea Parties say nice things about individual nominees. The money will flow ONLY to those nominees that have tea party support. The tea parties are outlaws and that means they aren’t bound by the laws of tradition and conventional wisdom.
Stop trying to interfere with the natural progress of metamorphosis of the Republicans. Concentrate instead with showing the Republicans the path to true enlightenment is to read the tea leaves.
In short, have some faith in what has already worked every place it’s been tried.
Tea Party (the party of know – know we can).

Lighten up Francis. Or don’t. Blame Newt if you need someone to hate. Newt has a lifetime of achievement in his field and is respected by better men than you.
mike_NC9 on November 13, 2009 at 10:46 PM
You could say the exact same thing about the average criminal.
Truth is, you are an enemy of conservatism because you favor competition/fighting in the dugout. Only people who want to lose tolerate dissension among the troops.
So either read to learn or go back to Puff Ho. But otherwise, STFU.

The lameness of your response speaks for itself…wrong a second time. Anyway, I may be better than he is…you wouldn’t know…like you didn’t know the fact that there was no primary in NY23.

You’re not going to prove it in a blog comment section skippy.

Newt has been lying to people for 15 years claiming he wrote the “Contract With America. The C.W.A was written by Larry Hunter, Dick Armey, Bill Paxon and Bob Walker.

well the Tea Party Patriots have ALREADY been working on a Contract FROM America
typical of Newt and Dick Armey (who made the Tea Party Express) to glom onto any grass roots organic movement
This from 9/22:
9/22 Update: A new project from the TeaPartyPatriots: Contract From America:
We would like to introduce you to the Contract From America website, our new initiative, where you can join your fellow Americans in a collaborative grassroots effort to create a document that offers real change in Washington, D.C. and the state capitols. Click here to go to the Contract From America homepage now.
Speaking of TEA Parties, this from Josh Painter:
Tell me again Sarah Palin isn’t running for President.
Oh, and go to hell Dick Armey!

Ironic isn’t it — actually irony isn’t the right world, how about chutzpah? And brought to you from a guy who wants to side with the global warmers. Give me a break! Newt, get off the stage.

How long does it take to come up with
1. Lower taxes
2. No socialized health care
3. Stop spending bazillions of dollars we don’t have
There’s your first principles. Mr. Steele, if you want, I can print out a few flyers at Kinkos and get you started with that too.

Just like the RNC to want and steal the conservation message so as to keep their phony bologna issues alive. You had your chance Newt and you let Clinton back you down. Time to shut up and quit crying. I have always liked you but your backbone always turns to gel, same for Michael Steele

It is about time. Besides the Constitution, the Government needs a set of realistic goals that it can follow. Most of U.S. set goals and revise them upon attainment.
Today, all politicians seem to think it is their right to rewrite the Constitution. The Constitution and Bill of Rights are not a living document. They are the rules established by our founding fathers by which I, you, and everyone else are governed. To change this document is lengthy process for a reason – being able to change the rules that govern U.S. on a whim gives far too much power into the hands of politicians whose egos get in the way.
Another “Contract with American” is a far more realistic method to move the country forward, the only requirement to assure their legality is to review them and assure they support and comply with the Constitution.
My final point is to remember the guidelines for goals. Are they SMART?
* S Specific
* M Measurable
* A Attainable
* R Relevant
* T Time-bound
