Obamateurism of the Day
posted at 8:05 am on November 12, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
It’s not easy for children to grow up in the White House. They have to live in a media fishbowl with an army of reporters looking for the most excruciating details of their lives in order to sell a few glossy magazines or supply gossip for a nation of Nosy Parkers. For the most part, Barack and Michelle Obama have done a fine job in maintaining the privacy of their two young daughters. This, however, was not the President’s finest moment:
The New York Times reported it rather straightforwardly:
President Obama marked the first anniversary of his election on Wednesday by calling on states to toughen their education standards – and wound up calling on parents to toughen theirs, too, as he confessed that his 11-year-old daughter, Malia, recently got a 73 on her science test. …
Then, to a chorus of oooohs from the crowd, he said that Malia, a sixth-grader at Sidwell Friends School in Washington, had come home with a 73 on her science test not long ago. He recounted how, a few years ago, she had come home with a grade in the 80s, believing that she had ‘’done pretty well.’’ He and his wife corrected her, telling her that their goal was “90 percent and up.’’
“So here’s the interesting thing: she started internalizing that,’’ the president said, adding that when she came home with a 73 on the science test ‘’she was depressed.’’ He asked her what happened, and she said the study guide didn’t match up with the test. So she vowed to study harder.
“So she came home yesterday, she got a 95,’’ Mr. Obama said. “But here’s the point: She said, ‘You know , I just like having knowledge.’’
The moral of the story, in the president’s view: “Don’t just expect teachers to set a high bar. You’ve got to set a high bar.”
No, the moral of the story should be not to use your child’s shortfalls as ways to score political points. It’s embarrassing enough to have your parents tell stories about your failures to other family members and friends; it’s absolutely mortifying to have a parent do so in a nationally-televised speech. In fact, it’s precisely these kind of natural childhood stumbles that the Obamas have done well to keep away from the media in order to keep some level of normalcy for their daughters, rather than force them to live their lives overly self-conscious.
As New York Magazine put it, Chelsea Clinton is somewhere grimacing in commiseration. At least Obama didn’t fly his daughter into a war zone with sniper fire, though. (h/t: Beth C)
Update: Fixed the video.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

The moral is that the filthy lying coward and his fat-assed wife can’t have it both ways. They can’t scream bloody murder when an activist group puts up an ad that refers to “the President’s daughters” and then use their kids lives as examples for the press. They are terrible parents in the way they use their kids as props.
As to the idea that the parents, not the teacher should set a high bar- sounds good. If you aren’t going to an snobby school like Sidwell Friends, your NEA teacher is probably less than interested in pushing you to greater success.

I don’t know about the “For the most part, Barack and Michelle Obama have done a fine job in maintaining the privacy of their two young daughters” thing. They trot them out or stage “candid” moments for photographers whenever it’s convenient for them. If it’s not convenient, all the sudden it’s “Hands off! Our daughters aren’t props!”
That said, if my Dad had done something like that I’d have been mortified.
crazy_legs on November 12, 2009 at 8:17 AM
Barry and Mo have no shame. They will use anyone and everyone to score points for their agenda — even humiliating their own children, making up stories or telling out and out lies to gain a sympathetic ear.

Yet.
To be fair, it’s hard to do well in science when your father does not understand basic math or economics.

Good to see she is picking up passing the blame like the old man.

Fun with math for the Obama girls. If 300K Americans lose their jobs each month thanks to daddy’s bad policies, how many months will it take for unemployment to equal daddy’s approval rating.

The moral of the story is that Ogabe’s daughters attend a fancy private school (say “Sidwell” with an English accent), an option he would deny to other parents.
Besides, Ogabe probably told one of Malia’s Secret Service agents to “explain” to the teacher how grades should be assigned to his kids.

I cringed when I heard that quote, too, but when you’re trying to reach an audience that sees you and your family as living in a world that is far removed from them, it’s not a major crime to dredge up a small anecdote (with a positive ending) to emphasize the commonality.
I wonder if this logic applies to a political figure who puts their daughter on a national magazine cover and the talk show circuit, after an error in judgment with more far-reaching consequences than a 73.
Bleeds Blue on November 12, 2009 at 9:04 AM

Excuse me? Isn’t Malia an 11 year old child? She should not expect her teachers to teach? Well okay, Michelle and Barack should be teaching work ethics to Malia, but I thought Democrats believed in leaving parenting to schools.
Bottom line: Of course we should expect our teachers to teach that mediocrity is NOT acceptable. Our entire society should teach this but unfortunately we teach sucking off the taxpayers teat is quite acceptable and should not be judged as “bad”.

Obama tells one brief story with a happy ending in one speech. Palin pushes a daughter and new mother who’s dealing with challenges too numerous to name — including a jerk boyfriend — onto the national stage with her baby, so that Sarah can look all supportive mom-y and pro-life.
I’m sure Bristol woke up one morning after four hours of interrupted sleep and said — “gee mom, how about a media tour and new gig pretending to be pro-abstience for a company that markets garish clothes to tweens.”
Bleeds Blue on November 12, 2009 at 9:37 AM
Good enough to get you wetting your “O” branded Huggies at the thought of staying on topic.
Tell me, little tardlett. Is speaking English as a second language, supposed to be an insult in your world? When reaching into my back of insults, I just can’t seem to get myself excited about something along the lines of, “Oh ya, well you speak Spanish!”
So are you going to man up, for one in your pathetic little life, and address using your childs mediocre grades, to score political points among the tards?
MNHawk on November 12, 2009 at 9:41 AM
Maybe the kid should be learning all of the topic being studied, rather than only studying for the test. In the real world, you have to solve the problem which exists and not the problems which the teacher invented.

Where do you get that Sarah Palin “pushed” her daughter to go on the national stage?
Perhaps Bristol is just as independent thinking as her parents are. She mainly wanted to get the point across to young women NOT to have sex because of the consequences.
Maybe Bristol liked the idea of getting paid by People Magazine. She is, after all, raising a child by herself.
You say Sarah Palin ‘pushed’ her onto the public scene. I think you are a Liar.
Obama absolutely pushed his very YOUNG daughter into the spotlight, for POLITICAL purposes.
Nice try, but No Cigar. Quit reaching and admit you’re wrong.

petefrt on November 12, 2009 at 10:04 AM
On topic? Like your Eric Holder link?
Some of my best friends speak English as a second language. All of my best friends speak it better than you write it.
“‘Tards?” I thought once Sarah came to national prominence, you people might find a different insult.
And no, I don’t think that one line in one speech was an egregious (look it up) mistake.
I don’t buy any of that for a minute.
Bleeds Blue on November 12, 2009 at 10:05 AM

SKYFOX on November 12, 2009 at 10:21 AM
Now see, that wasn’t so hard now, was it little one?
I do find it interesting, however, that you don’t think Obama sending out Eric “bagboy for bribes” Holder, to Chicago strong arm that DC councilman, who wants nothing more than the child appearing with him, to get the same quality of education that your corrupt president’s own children get, is germane (look it up, along with tard) to the topic?
Maybe you just might enjoy the irony of a president, too much of a coward to release his own grades, hiding behind the mediocre grades of a child?
Or maybe, you can just aim a little higher, than corrupt Chicago machine trash, the next time you step into a voting booth. It would save you much time, always having to write, and whine about what others say of your Sugar Daddy in Chief.

BetseyRoss on November 12, 2009 at 10:55 AM
I don’t know. I watched this apparently in a vaccuum and didn’t see anything wrong with it. In fact, I think his message about getting parents engaged in their kids education is an excellent one. I know that sounds like common sense to many of us, but as someone who has a bit of exposure to education (I don’t work in the field), this is a real issue for kids in lower income families — I hope his words reach their ears.
Yeah so he talked about his daughter’s test score — so what? It’s hardly tabloid material.
