An Army officer’s outrage over Fort Hood
posted at 3:35 pm on November 12, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
The Army as an institution has been neutered by decades of political correctness and the leaders in Hasan’s chain-of-command failed to act accordingly out of fear of being labeled anti-Muslim and receiving a negative evaluation report. The counter-terrorism agencies knew Hasan was communicating with Al-Qaeda and dismissed it as academic research instead of delving deeper into the probability that a terrorist had infiltrated the ranks.
Even four hours after Hasan stood on a desk yelling Allahu Akbar! and opened fire, the FBI stated that they were not investigating the attack as an act of terrorism even as there were still reports of other gunmen on the loose. Meanwhile, the Army continues to dismiss it as a “tragedy” and an “isolated incident by a lone gunman” while the media has invented the psychological condition of post-traumatic stress disorder by proxy. There is more concern for promoting the appropriate information operation campaign and maintaining the illusion of safety than there is for actually exposing the weaknesses and faults in the system that allowed this to happen. We’re even being told that damage to the Army’s efforts at diversity would be a greater tragedy than the murder of the twelve soldiers — how ironic the week of Veterans’ Day.
This has nothing to do with being anti-Islamic. After numerous tours to Iraq and working with countless cultural advisors on Ft. Bragg, I know dozens of Muslims who I respect and admire greatly. This has everything to do with force protection and security being trumped by the concepts of political correctness and diversity. This has everything to do with a hypocritical system and culture that breeds timidity and dismissiveness in the interest of career advancement. If I preached a white-supremacist ideology or described Timothy McVeigh as a hero to the cause of freedom and liberty, how long do you think I would still be in the military drawing a salary, receiving educational benefits and getting promoted like Hasan did?
The author of this piece, Army Major Shawn Keller, is currently stationed at Fort Bragg. Be sure to read it all, but this last paragraph makes a point that seems to have been lost in the media — and the example he uses perfectly exposes the media hypocrisy Keller blasts. Just seven months ago, the Department of Homeland Security used McVeigh as an explicit example of an ideological extremist as a warning to watch veterans for “extremist” tendencies. In fact, let’s look at the language from the report (emphasis mine):
After Operation Desert Shield/Storm in 1990-1991, some returning military veterans—including Timothy McVeigh—joined or associated with rightwing extremist groups.
The media gave Napolitano and the DHS plenty of sympathetic coverage over conservative outrage over using McVeigh to smear federalists, free-market voters, all pro-life activists, and the like. They claimed that the McVeigh example made such warnings about extremists among mainstream conservatives valid. Many media outlets dismissed opposition to the report as tea-party outrage.
Yet here we have Nidal Hasan, who explicitly “associated with” Anwar al-Aulaqi, a figure that American intelligence suspects of operational involvement in 9/11, who yelled “Allah akbar!“ as he shot more than 50 people and killed 14 of them, and who repeatedly told his colleagues that the US had declared war on his faith and that suicide bombings could be justified. Does the media connect the dots the way they attempted with conservatives who espoused such radical thinking as federalism? No. Instead, we get offered this kind of analysis from Time today:
Hasan was a walking contradiction: the counselor who himself needed counseling; the proud soldier who did not want to fight, at least not against fellow Muslims; the man who could not find a sufficiently modest and pious wife through his mosque’s matchmaking machinery but who frequented the local strip club. A man supposedly so afraid of deployment that he launched a war of his own from which he clearly did not expect to return alive. “Everyone is asking why this happened,” said Hasan’s family in a formal statement, “and the answer is that we simply do not know.” (See pictures of the aftermath of the Fort Hood shootings.)
But if this is the new face of terrorism in America, we need better facial-recognition software. Hasan’s motives were mixed enough that everyone with an agenda could find markers in the trail he left. For those inclined to see soldiers as victims, he was a symptom of an overstretched military, whose soldiers return from their third and fourth deployments pouring out such pain that it scars their therapists as well.
In other words, we’re back to blaming the war for the terrorism, instead of the other way around.
What we have here is a political correctness double standard that has already gotten people killed. The media and this administration are perfectly willing to paint normal political thought as dangerous extremism while demanding that people don’t connect the dots that obviously form a pattern. Keller has it diagnosed perfectly.
Update: Bill Kristol has a depressingly rational prediction:
Major Keller will get in more trouble for writing this, than anyone in Hasan’s chain of command or elsewhere in the government will get for failing to do their job.
Or more than Hasan did for his series of statements before the shooting, or his contacts with al-Aulaqi, or …

Even if one would argue that Islam itself is not a violent doctrine, there are surely strains of it that are. Wahabbism is definitely a violent ideology and the 19 hijackers that destroyed the WTC were not deranged but ideologically motivated.
.
It is the height of irresponsibility and wicked callousness about the safety of our soldiers and population at large to deny this and not see an obvious instance of this in Hassan.
.
People want to know why we haven’t suffered another terrorist attack. One of the reasons is that the Jihadists are winning the ideological battle as our leadership at the highest levels has adopted the point of view that there is no such thing is an evil Jihadist.

My youngest son expressed a desire to join the military during his senior year at high school. A brother in law had made a career in the Army and my son wanted to travel the world like his uncle had done. I suggested we discuss it with his uncle (circa 1996 I believe). His words then sure seem to ring true today. “If you have better options, stay away. There is no future here if you are a white male”. Over a dozen years ago he told us the diversity gig was going to destroy the Army.
Very sad.

I read a national poll that said between 60 & 70% of the American public believe Ft. Hood was terrorism and about 25% didn’t. If this is true, then there is some hope and change out there that I can believe in.
Is it too optimistic to think that by denying reality the Left and The O Man are unintentionally solidifying the base of their opposition and driving the squishy middle and/or independent voters to the right?
Bruno Strozek on November 12, 2009 at 3:55 PM
Sadly, I tend to agree with Mr. Kristol on this. The Army doesn’t tend to take well to officers stating strong opinions on controversial issues in public. They expect those kinds of remarks to be “taken up the chain” so their superiors aren’t put on the spot in a public fashion. He might not be disciplined directly for it, but he might also find his next tour in some really cold place.

This is OT, but a young soldier injured in the shooting called a local radio talk show guy yesterday, and he may get in trouble for what he said. He was visited in the hospital by both Bush and Obama, and he said Obama was sort of robotic, and didn’t talk with any of them personally, just a little speech to the group in his ward.
Plus, the WH advance guy was obnoxious to the soldiers, telling them to get rid of “offensive” literature on their bedside tables, and that they better not try to to shake the President’s hand unless he offers first. Outrageous.
The soldier said Bush was wonderful, spending time with each soldier, holding hands with them, and speaking very warmly and personally with each.

Sadly, that’s probably true. But kudos to Major Keller for having the guts to know it and speak out anyway. We need more of this kind of courage and clear thinking in our military (and our government) — a lot more.

AZCoyote on November 12, 2009 at 4:11 PM
Sorry, Major. That’s a politically correct cover statement to give your argument legitimacy that it really doesn’t require. The fact is, islam is a death cult whose teachings and edicts against infidels are quite clear. The mere fact that the Army has “cultural advisors” is another glaring example of cultural diversity run amok. Given a choice to choose between their “religion” and their “friendship” to you, those same muslims you respect and admire greatly wouldn’t hesitate to cut your throat, either literally or figuratively.

My son was discharged from active duty in January with some evidence of PTS. He has found ways of coping and even seems happy at times, although there is some underlying stuff.
My mother asked him about this Fort Hood stuff, and thought he was going to go ballistic. Not on her, but in general. Apparently, he was subjected to a whole bunch of PC nonsense during his time that he still hasn’t recovered from, and looked at this whole thing realizing that the Army – that was supposed to look out for his well being while he was putting it all on the line – was playing stupid mind games and ignoring obvious dangers to him and his fellow soldiers.

One thing I’d like to see covered is why the **** did a cop directing traffic have to come into one of the biggest military bases in the country to save them from one armed man? Are US military bases so poorly protected that you can walk in with a gun and waste a few dozen people before the traffic lady shows up to bust a cap in your ass? This level of lax security on a MILITARY BASE is downright criminal. I don’t know the details but I have a pretty good suspicion nobody was carrying guns because of some stupid liberal “zero tolerance” policy against firearms (on a military base!!!). All US military personnel should have to carry a firearm on their person at all times when they are on duty (and by on duty I also mean sleeping in a military bunker).

I commend MAJ Keller for having the stones to step out and kick the PC party line in the nuts and write this piece. I’d like to see PC dragged kicking and screaming into Congress and have it die a violent death if there happens to be men and women there who would be willing to expose it.
The memories of 14 people and the scars of 30 people demand it. Congressional activities need to come to a full stop now and get to the bottom of this knucklehead’s jihad. He needs to be flown to DC and testify in a gurney if he has to in front of the people of this country.

I predict not. The one thing I truly loved about the military, they can’t fire you. They can screw with you, they can give you lousy duty stations, but they can’t fire you. I always said about being the military “the beauty of being right is never having to say you are sorry”.
While it’s true that if the good Major had hopes of becoming a General, those are now probably shot to hell. There are rules about evaluations, superiors have to justify adverse comments or marks. Those being evaluated have the right to rebuttal anything adverse. Plus, he’s a Major, not a Private First Class.
What happens to this Major will all depend on how much spine he has and how willing he is to stand his ground. After reading his article, I think he’s in great shape.

Very true. I and several others have explained several times why the Joes at FT Hood were not armed. It is done not only to prevent loss/theft of weapons but also due to the drug and race fights that occurred in the early 70’s. So weapons are kept locked up.
Better security means a higher level of inconvience for civilians so events like this occur and will continue for a few more years.

This is another reason why the REAL story of the “flying imams” must be told – and their attempt to silence vigilant citizens by labelling them “anti-Muslim” and suing them out of their life’s savings.
It’s also why it needs to be told that Obama’s lawyer – at the behest of Rahm Emanuel and David Axelrod – threatened media network heads TWICE (once before and once after the election) with DESTROYING THEM THROUGH “DIVERSITY” ENFORCEMENT if they reported Obama’s eligibility issue.
These people are playing for keeps. This is how they intend to destroy us. Until we know the enemy’s plan and resolve how to make sure it CAN’T work, they will keep doing this and they will destroy us.
The first step is for all of us to be courageous enough to say to heck with the PC, even if my livelihood and family is threatened. The only way this can work against us is if we cower apart rather than stand together and bravely confront.
There should be no way Michelle Malkin – and Ed Morissey and Allahpundit, and every other reporter or talk show on earth – has to fear for her family if she says (like Lou Dobbs) that maybe the most powerful man in the world should have to show his documents like any Little League player has to.
THIS WILL KILL US. The only way to defeat it is with the courage of speaking the truth, whether people will call us names and not like us any more or not.

The only people on a military base that have a weapon are those who are getting ready to deploy(and they make damnd sure you have no access to Ammmo) and those who are on guard duty. Military bases are zero-tolerance gun-free zones. It’s a policy that probably saves lives because if you know what bored soldiers are like, you wouldn’t want them armed either. I’m speaking from experience, I’m not bashing the military.
When you deploy to Iraq you have to fly there on American commercial airlines. You have to disable your weapon before you get on the plane, even though you don’t have any ammo and there is nobody but soldiers and flight crew on board. Take out the bolt and put it in your pocket where it grinds against your skin for 16 hours. No knives on your person whatsoever, but checked baggage is fine. It’s crazy but thats what Top-down one size fits all rules are like.
Mord on November 12, 2009 at 4:29 PM
I’m sure for him that that is a true statement, however, it is well past time for all to learn to separate the ideology from its adherents in order to understand Islam. Just because one knows a Muslim does not mean they know anything about the ideology itself. This is evident in that his superiors thought that he was “perverting” Islam and that sending Hasan to a class to study would benefit him.
It is also imperative that we understand that just because a Muslim does not seem violent, does not mean that we are not under threat. The biggest threat is that of stealth jihad being waged by seemingly benign moderate propagandists, including those Obama is surrounding himself with in the WH.
These propaganda Islamist groups are working in our education system to rewrite the history of Islam, they are working through our courts to alter workplace regulations, within our prison system to convert, and even within our governments and financial institutions to force the submission of non-Muslims to sharia law.
Connie on November 12, 2009 at 4:29 PM
This has come up so many times and sorry, but it is a poor idea and it will never happen.
For one, the majority of soldiers have an automatic (three round burst) rifle as their weapon. These weapons require a great deal of control and the security measures to prevent their theft or misplacement are incredible. I would have to show up every morning and sign my weapon out and then, then not even be able to drive my own POV because it’s against regulations to transport a military weapon in one. The majority of the military would not want to do this. We all understand why it’s essential to have your weapon all the time while deployed, but not in The States. Would you want to be responsible for your weapon, every day of the year?
And the bottom line, it would not prevent the onset of an attack like this. It might end it quicker. But I don’t think the added burden would justify the logistical nightmare this would cause.

What a stinking pile of poop that statement is!
That “scarring” of therapists is just a huge unadulterated bunch of bunk. I worked as a therapist for years. Intrinsic to therapist training is learning to listen to, even bear, terrible pain without emotionally internalizing it. It’s part of the job. Any mental health practitioner worth the designation, knows to never enter the profession if he/she can’t resist becoming a victim him or herself. To stay at a therapeutic level of detachment is a learned skill that, if not mastered, is an instant disqualifier. For any competent psychiatrist to be somehow helplessly “scarred” to the point of murder and mayhem is just a patent, unadulterated crock.
There was something entirely different, and far more egregious, going on with this Hasan fella.

He can get sent to a retention board for making these comments and tossed out “for the good of the service” or be recommended for Withdrawl of Commission by the first General in his chain of command. Or be sent somewhere crappy with out any family (if he has one) and forgotten until he does not have a family anymore. Or sent on premenant travel so he lives out of his suitcase until he quits.

good post, I agree…there’s something odd about it to say the least…nobody had any hand-to-hand training? I also hope that details come out to allay my concerns..

As a former Special Forces soldier from Ft. Bragg 1989-1996, I too praise Maj Keller for his courage to be a truth-teller. Having seen firsthand the way senior NCOs (myself) and especially officers, must jump through all the right hoops and put the PC blinders on to not only advance but merely stay out of trouble, is the PRIMARY reason I took the $1 million worth of SpecOps training and found someone to pay a lot more with no hassles. I still hope that someday the DoD machine will wakeup and see what their policies do to morale and retention.
Lead the way Major Keller!!

Demosthenes, Churchill, Cicero and many others suffered for speaking against PC wishful thinking concerning the looming threat on the horizon; when no one else would.
It was/is still the right thing to do.

I fear Bill Kristol has it nuts on. It may not be overt, but Major Keller is going to find his detailer hard to reach in the future and/.or be looking at some raunchy assignment and a lack of promotion in years to come.
The encountergroupification of our war fighters is no laughing matter and must be strenuously opposed.

I am in Texas. Concealed carry, 45 and 380 backup, four magazines 45 and three 380 and eyes wide open. Afraid? Naw.

If a Muslim shoots someone his religion is the last thing they will mention.
But if a Veteran shoots someone his Veterans status will be mentioned in the first line.

I don’t agree with anything that is going on but like I said yesterday “Le Placard”, the movie is what has happened. And Ann Coulter has pegged it.
Also, as Thomas Sowell said in our current culture this guy might walk free and if he chooses to go to a foreign country they may cheer his arrival.
It’s sick but true, apparently. So change it or get used to it.

You mind referencing that? There may be some obscure article in the UCMJ or DoD policy I am not aware of, but that sounds incorrect to me. I know Generals assigned to key billets get some kind of oversight, but that’s all I know of.

This is a former Army officer who is not surprised to see massive amounts of PC, CYA and blind ambition amongst the higher officer (and NCO) ranks of our military.

Hasan was an Army psychiatrist, not a therapist. His role was, best I can find out, essentially to review returning soldiers’ files, make diagnoses, and prescribe medications. I’m guessing he never spent more than ten or fifteen minutes with any single patient.
From what I’ve heard, talking to some military medical people I know, the military uses psychologists and therapists, not psychiatrists, for counseling sessions.

Pray for Major Shawn Keller and all of our fighting men and women.

.
In states where there is concealed carry there is much less crime. Who is better prepared and more circumspect in their dealing with arms than our soldiers. This is an insane policy.
.
It would prevent many would be attackers if they knew that 100 people were armed and ready to deal with them.
.
This policy makes no sense in our times when many are out to get any American and especially our soldiers. At the very minimum, it would have drastically cut the losses due to the attack.

If he does get in trouble I hope we hear about it –Between congress and the White House – this is getting real Old – we have the Season upon us and we should have some Holiday shopping – if for some reason we have shootings – expect a lull and then “THE PEOPLE” will more than likely be heard again in Washington .
