Video: Scenes from the Tucson Tea Party

posted at 1:36 pm on November 11, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

If Democrats think that the House has muscled its way past the Tea Party activists by passing the ObamaCare bill, the Tucson Tea Party sent a message yesterday. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) calls herself a “Blue Dog Democrat,” but that dog didn’t hunt two months ago in a town-hall meeting, and it fell even more flat after Giffords voted to approve Nancy Pelosi’s massive plan to overhaul the American health-care system. Can a Democrat who voted for Porkulus, ObamaCare, and cap-and-trade call herself a “Blue Dog”, or has she become a Lap Dog to Pelosi? Tucson voters gave an answer for that yesterday:

Once again, what’s remarkable about this protest is how absolutely ordinary it is. No one is foaming at the mouth; they’re mostly laughing at Giffords’ hypocritical attempts to cast herself as some sort of moderate while mindlessly following Pelosi and her radical agenda. They’re not an angry mob, as the media has cast the Tea Party movement — they’re a motivated group of voters who are sending a message that will only get louder in the coming year.

Be sure to watch it all. HA reader/commenter Ordinary1 did a great job of putting together a funny and entertaining look at this grassroots activism. Well, entertaining to everyone but Gabby Giffords, that is.

Man those are some scary teabaggers! :-0

That people are willing to show up outside a Congressional office in protest AFTER the vote says all that needs to be said about the legitimacy of the movement. When among themselves Democrats must be really worried about this.

highhopes on November 11, 2009 at 1:45 PM

A vote for a “Blue Dog” is a vote for Pelosi. There is NO way around that fact.

Can a Democrat who voted for Porkulus, ObamaCare, and cap-and-trade call herself a “Blue Dog”

The myth of the Blue Dog continues…

Nobody who is active in Democratic politics could survive very long being a small-government, fiscally-conservative type.

mankai on November 11, 2009 at 1:46 PM

They have to know they are going to lose because of this vote. I’m thinking that the White House promised them good government jobs after they lost their re election bid if they would vote for this.

Nobody who voted for this bill in a conservative district will win. They must know that.

ThackerAgency on November 11, 2009 at 1:49 PM

This is why Pelosi scheduled the vote prior to the recess. She didn’t want the Blue Dogs to hear from the people until they were bought and sealed.

PackerBronco on November 11, 2009 at 1:50 PM

The Tucson Tea Party organizers have done a great job of keeping their efforts in the news. Very dedicated bunch. Kudos to them.

Yes. Giffords must go. She beat the Conservative Tim Bee by 12 points last time around by running as a moderate. She won’t be able to do that this time. Her voting record (among other things) will be her downfall.

I heard that in closed door talks tweenst Clinton and the Won, Tea Party participants were repeatedly referred to as, “Teabaggers”.
WTF?!!
Our POS POTUS has done a lot o’ shite to piss me off, but I am way past pissed now. He learly has no regard for the individual…only the masses that worship at the feet of the Obamessiah.
Both of these massive egos, somehow managed to stuff themselves in to the same room at the same time and proceeded to insult myself and all others that participated in the protests in a most disgusting and vile fashion…and probably got a good chuckle out of it.
I ain’ laughin’….

Also, is it simply because she’s a two-termer that CQ considers AZ-8 “likely Democratic”?

There are supposed to be more registered Republicans than Democrats in District 8, but not by much. The local papers are run by liberal Dems, and they endorsed Giffords last time (and probably will again). The Republican party hasn’t put up much of a fight against her. The Tea Partiers, on the other hand, have been protesting against her relentlessly — not that it’s made any difference in the way she votes. As another commenter noted, Gifford ran (both times) as a moderate, but she’s anything but.

AZCoyote on November 11, 2009 at 2:29 PM

Hey Ordinary1….come up to Prescott and help us out! Ann Kirkpatrick ignored all our efforts. But she made sure she was in the local paper, writing about her “concern”…and she voted for it anyway. We gotta get rid of her, along with Gabby!

How about Democrats. Why give these people special status? They are not special. They are reliable votes for Pelosi and in lockstep with their party no matter how much they claim otherwise.

Blue dogs supposedly cross party lines to vote with the conservatives on particular issues but, frankly, most of the dogs in Pelosi’s pound call themselves Blue Dogs when in reality they are nothing more than Democrats in right-leaning districts. They shouldn’t be given the cover of the moderate label when, like Giffords they clearly are nothing more than Pelosi’s chew toy.

I truly think that the dems are convinced that once this passes, it will be so good and so well received that they will be immune from being voted out of office.
They are convinced that we really need this bill and really want this bill, we just don’t understand it.
Even Bill is convinced that if Hillary’s bill would have passed it would have been great.
This is where people who say there are no differences between the two parties don’t get it…

Bob, she got exactly the same reaction in Sierra Vista the night before, and she looked genuinely puzzled. I said to the guy next to me …. She really doesn’t have a clue…Look at her . All I can say is that she made a HUGE mistake voting for this bill, and against the Stupak amendment. She works for US, not Pelosi, and she’ll find that out in 2010, believe me.

The effects will only be felt in 2012 in a positive sense for the Dims if they can immediately pass AMNESTY with the help of McCain and Grahamnasty. Thus putting 30 million illegals and as many more as can hop the border before the elections in Dim pockets.

The long term consequences are what they think will benefit them. Turning the whole country into a third world, taxed poor, Government dependency.

Keep a sharp eye and a sharp stick out for your RINO’s and Blue Dogs amnesty is a killer!

It’s great to see the Tea Partiers actively opposing this fraud.

However, a lot more will be necessary to beat her. No offense to Doug Hoffman, who made the best of his abilities, but I hope Az-8 folks can find someone better than his type to run against this liberal b****. Someone articulate, charismatic and with lots of money, but also principled. I get the idea the former Republican (forgot his name) talk show host who used to represent this district upset the well-healed suburbanites. You need someone like Bob McDonnell who is smart and can talk to them in their language. And he or she shouldn’t run a one issue (anti-illegals) campaign. Good luck in finding your candidate. Start looking now. Any Republican running in a district full of these shallow upscale dumb f***ing suburbanites who vote for frauds like this Giffords and Obama needs to go to school on the McDonnell campaign.

nelsonknows on November 11, 2009 at 4:46 PM

In 2006 when the Gabster was first elected to congress, the Republicans engaged in a heated primary to succede Jim Kolbe. The NRCC intervened in the race and endorsed the RINO candidate before the vote. The conservative candidate was nominated, but Kolbe, who was retiring, refused to back him. Gabby was endorsed by both local papers and every TV station. She won by about 20,000 votes.

This is just another reason why I hate RINOs!!!I was a precinct committeeman at the time, but this crap drove me away. I haven’t been back since.

Can Tucson still be that shocked at a Dem’s actions after all these years?

Known as the Hippie Capitol of the SW even back in the 90’s and having a hand in shatting out such wonderful hard-core Dems as Raul Grijalva, Tom Volgy and Ed Pastor in a true Chicago-style political machine, it would seem they’re still wallowing in their own socialist filth created in the voting booths.

Where’s John C. Scott to sum it all up when ya need him?

UncleOlaf on November 11, 2009 at 6:42 PM

I live in Tucson in Gifford’s district. She is definitely NOT a Blue Dog. Yet somehow she keeps getting elected. I just do not understand it. Part of the reason is that the Republican party keeps supporting weaker more moderate candidates. I think many Republicans in the past have said why bother voting. The Republicans throw solid conservatives such as Randy Graffe overbooard. Hopefully 2010 will have the GOP supporting a solid conservative or she will win again.

Talked to a die hard Obama fan over the weekend. Told her I had watched C-SPAN and heard parts of the bill read. Told her what was in the bill. Her reaction “WHAT????!, you’re kidding”. When I explained the bill caps doctor’s fees but not lawyer’s fees, gives AARP 1 billion, gives insurance cover by not permitting anyone to sue for denial of treatment, and can send ordinary citizens to jail for up to five years, she could not believe it. I also explained how Big Pharma would be exempt from lawsuits on any and all medications they produced. I think the last straw, which I saved for last, was telling her our Progressive Rep voted against the bill for those reasons. WE have a convert. Now she gets it. Vote ‘em out if they don’t listen. Good on ya, Tucson!!!
