Palin hints to Oprah: I might consider a talk show

posted at 9:00 pm on November 11, 2009 by Allahpundit

The great convergence hath come to pass, my friends.

Oprah asked Palin directly whether she wanted to get into the talk show business. Palin demurred and, according to audience members interviewed outside the studio, suggested she was considering the move. Palin did not give a direct yes or no answer.

In addition, at least one audience member noticed tension between Oprah and Palin.

Oprah “kept on her and on her,” said Lauren Espie of Oprah’s inquiries into Palin’s plans to host a talk show. But Palin “bluntly never responded.”

This was the big takeaway from the interview? Not “death panels” or McCain aides kneecapping her or Levi Johnston turning out to be the ultimate D-bag? Way to seize the moment, Oprah. As for the book, Mark Halperin’s got a bullet-point sneak preview (nutshell: heavy on media-bashing, light on policy) but this piece at Daily Finance about how it might not end up being the cash cow everyone expects is more interesting. Hmmmm:

If Palin’s advance is as high as $5 million, then HarperCollins wlll need to sell more than 400,000 copies of Going Rogue to cover the advance and expenses for marketing and overhead…

Within the industry, figures for both print runs and pre-orders are notoriously inaccurate. Publishers inflate print-run figures — a good rule of thumb is that the actual print run is half of what’s reported — so the 1.5 million-copy press run of Going Rogue is likely closer to 750,000. The Amazon-Target-Walmart price war has made cheap copies plentiful, but their sites’ “bestseller” rankings indicate high velocity, not necessarily high sales; if several hundred copies of Going Rogue were rapidly pre-ordered, the book would shoot up in the rankings.

I’m going to inch out on the limb and guess that a book promoted with heavily hyped interviews on Oprah, Barbara, Greta, Hannity, and O’Reilly(!) is likely to end up making money. Dude, she was pledging autographed copies at that pro-life event in return for $1,000 donations. The grassroots is going to eat it up.

Incidentally, if you missed her latest Facebook post, she’s now objecting to the characterization of her comments about “In God We Trust” on American coins, insisting that they had nothing to do with Obama. Fair enough, but even so, her point was that they were part of a trend — and as Fox News demonstrates, that “trend” was short-lived. Exit question: How does a good conservative atheist boy support a candidate who thinks “we too often move God to the side in our public life”?

Update: Ever vigilant for media bias, Palin supporters are accusing me in the comments of having written a misleading headline. All I can do is give you what’s in the story. Quote: “Palin demurred and, according to audience members interviewed outside the studio, suggested she was considering the move.” I added “hints” to the headline. Good enough?

Oh, and here’s her Facebook note about Oprah:

Willow, Piper, and I are in Chicago and just wanted to let you know that I had a great conversation with Oprah today. We taped the show for Monday, November 16th, and enjoyed it so much that we went way over on time. The rest will air on Oprah.com. Oprah was very hospitable and gracious, and her audience was full of warm, energized and (no doubt) curious viewers.

- Sarah Palin

The interview went over on time? Extra material for Oprah.com? Sounds encouraging. We’ll see.

I watched Huckabee’s show once. He was interviwing Joe the Plumber.

It wasn’t good. I don’t think anyone with political aspirations should go that route.

The one question never put to her by perky Katie Couric. It really blew my mind how whenever the Media talked to or about Sarah Palin they skipped over her record. I guess they didn’t want to make Obama look small by comparison.

ddrintn on November 11, 2009 at 9:37 PM

Atheists are not very tolerant of people with faith. But to answer the exit question, there would not be any candidate who wouldn’t be a person of faith. An atheist is simply not going to run for president.

heh
She is in Oprahs head and on her turf!
Oprah is leaving network for cable her ratings are DOWN after her endorsement of Teh One and her seeming rejection of Sarah
MANY of her viewers were middle class women who on my side of the aisle did not appreciate her comments at the big LA Kennedy Oprahah show that women didnt have to vote for Hillary just because we were women! Didnt know that until OPRAH told me!

frakker

anyway, she then didnt interview Sarah after she gave BO and MO time and went on tour

Oprah is old news and will never have what she had with millions of middle class women viewers

which would leave a BIG fan base that already think Sarah is great! and she could be the anti-VIEW!

I bought 10 copies from Amazon at about $20 something each,

1 from Johnny Beth to get it signed by Sarah in Cincinnati on the 20th for $28, and

one of the PRE-SIGNED copies for $1,000 in Milwarkee (to be mailed). I am officially one of “Sarah’s Rogues”, whereas before I was just…roguish.

Of course I REALLY REALLY care for Moms and babies, and Wisconsin RightToLife is doing great work especially with teenagers and young adults.

This struggle will be won by convincing the youth.

Belle #1: My husband bought me this fur coat.

Belle #2: Well, isn’t that nice…

Belle #1:And when he proposed he gave me this 3 carat diamond ring.

Belle #2: Well isn’t that nice.

Bell #1: and then we went on a cruise in Tahiti

Belle #2: Well, isn’t that niiiice.

Belle #1: What about you?

Belle #2: Well… my husband sent me to charm school and I learned to say “Well isn’t that nice” instead of “f^@# you, bitch.”

… not sure why, i just felt like throwing that into the conversation…

ok so an audieunce member says something and that is the big breakway from the interview? Without people seeing it? Hmmm sounds like a set up.

Palin would never be stupid enough to show her hand on what she is or will do in the future. The moment she does so she losses the element of “surprise” If she says she is out of politics she losses funding. If she says she is in politics she brings the attacks back and forfeits the private citizen label. Palin will play it close to the vest until she annouces her attentions. and she will do that when SHE is ready. I imagine it will not be until after 2010. she may guest host for a year or so to get her face and ideas out to the public but I do not see her doing a huck. I could be wrong.

Well if you believe that people can rise from the dead, walk on water, create wine by waiving your hand over water, feed a village with a fish and a piece of bread, yes that is a prerequisite, however if you think that some guy in the 1800s was able to decode another installment from this book with a golden seer stone, then that is just too much. At least that is what the polls say. Yeah we get the rulers we deserve.

I believe in a higher power, and I would vote for a fiscally conservative atheist any day.

Besides, Obama doesn’t believe in God and he is President. He joined that Church in Chicago to gain political connections and hasn’t found a church since he’s been in the White House. He openly campaigns for death. I know I shouldn’t question his faith, but he sure struts like an atheist.

I really don’t get all the speculation about Palin’s political future. All the talk from both sides mean nothing. If she decides to take a shot at it in 2012, the primaries will decide if she has what it takes. None of the potential candidates will be anointed without going through the process.

joedoe on November 11, 2009 at 9:47 PM

How can any Republican win without the mammoth snarky conservative-atheist voting block?

Erich66 on November 11, 2009 at 9:47 PM

Not that anybody even cares or clicked here on purpose or will gobble up every word because Sarah Palin isn’t even Alaska’s Republican governor anymore and her GOP presidential ticket lost last year big-time and critics made a lot of fun of her habits and family and her clothing and the way she talks and didn’t get an abortion and then quit as Alaska’s governor.

And she’s got no chance of succeeding in national politics because she’s a dim conservative and no one cares anything about her to the point that her book publisher, HarperCollins, only printed 1.5 million advance copies of “Going Rogue,” coming out next week.

Delicious sarcasm from Andrew Malcolm.

Every choice made by a person of faith is informed by that faith. Few are capable of compartmentalization to the degree seemingly required by the more vocal and vociferous atheists and agnostics. Comes to that, even when I was an atheist, I wasn’t devout about it. I didn’t feel the need to proselytize my non-faith or denigrate the beliefs of others.

Faith and reason are not mutually exclusive. In my view, it is more rational to presume the existence of a Creator than not. And while I’m at it, atheists have given humanity what? Inversions of faith such as communist ideology in toto? The guillotine? The Gulag? The killing fields of Cambodia? Explain to me please how you, as nonbelievers, can argue from a position of pure reason.

Enough snark. You’re an atheist? That’s nice. That’s also irrelevant.

BadgerHawk on November 11, 2009 at 10:12 PM

Nah. I remember the last Palin poll here, and it kind of disappeared when it didn’t give the “right” results.

cs89 on November 11, 2009 at 10:10 PM

“Disappeared”? It had something like 1,000 comments.

Better on “I’m a Celebrity: Get Me Out Of Here”

JetBoy on November 11, 2009 at 9:28 PM

No way dude.

Sarah is an outdoorsy type. She’d be just fine on Survivor.

Sapwolf on November 11, 2009 at 10:11 PM

Obama on Survivor. That I’d LOVE to see. LOL

Do you ever post here without ragging on Faith. You don’t know whether all posters here believe in God or not . We ALL know where you stand. Understand?

donh525 on November 11, 2009 at 10:15 PM

Suggested? Vague word, open to (mis)interpretation.

How does a good conservative atheist boy support a candidate who thinks “we too often move God to the side in our public life”?

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

ROFL…the atheists or “anti-theists” and the more wild-eyed fundies have more in common than they realize.

ddrintn on November 11, 2009 at 10:09 PM

Yeah, show me the supernatural bullsh!t that I believe in from some guy that wants 10%. The State lovers that comprise most atheists are worse because they want us all to give nearly 50%. I don’t sell false promises.

Maybe the only that could be considered “supernatural bullsh!t” that I seem to sell is that people can actually handle the truth after being snookered for so many years. If that’s the case, I am misunderstood, because I could give a damn if people could handle it or not. At least we would be in a state of honesty.

I’d like to teleport Obama back to the heydays of Cabrini Green.

See what I mean? LOL

Look, all you have to say is “I’m not a Christian and don’t believe in God”. We can fill in the rest.

ddrintn on November 11, 2009 at 10:17 PM

Believe what I believe or you are stupid.

Thanks Lev!

Exit question: How does a good conservative atheist boy support a candidate who thinks “we too often move God to the side in our public life”?

By contemplating the last avowed atheist who became President of the United States.

That post was heavily commented, but I don’t remember seeing it ever mentioned again after that post.

Did I miss it? When AP ran all the “Palin has high unfavorables,” did he include a reference to it?

cs89 on November 11, 2009 at 10:22 PM

By the way: How do you “bluntly never respond” to something?

Another mountain out a mole hill post.

How does a good conservative atheist boy support a candidate who thinks “we too often move God to the side in our public life”?

How does that statement affect your life or threaten it in any way? You’re not going to the “looming theocracy” card are you?

Dongemaharu on November 11, 2009 at 10:23 PM

What’s up with the “Sassy or Trashy Bikinis” pictures link right next to the “Sarah Palin in Pictures” link in the middle of the LA article??? WTF

You could be right that the slim minority of humanity that disavows all “supernatural” stuff has the “truth.” Personally, I think the vast majority who see something more to life than this mortal existence comprehend reality more “truthfully.”

We’ll see- eventually.

cs89 on November 11, 2009 at 10:25 PM

Well with Mitt commiting political hari-kari your choices are dwindling. Defeating Obama must be the ultimate goal.

AP:

Ever vigilant for media bias, Palin supporters are accusing me in the comments of having written a misleading headline.

You write misleading anything about Palin…haw haw haw!
