Palin hints to Oprah: I might consider a talk show

posted at 9:00 pm on November 11, 2009 by Allahpundit

The great convergence hath come to pass, my friends.

Oprah asked Palin directly whether she wanted to get into the talk show business. Palin demurred and, according to audience members interviewed outside the studio, suggested she was considering the move. Palin did not give a direct yes or no answer.

In addition, at least one audience member noticed tension between Oprah and Palin.

Oprah “kept on her and on her,” said Lauren Espie of Oprah’s inquiries into Palin’s plans to host a talk show. But Palin “bluntly never responded.”

This was the big takeaway from the interview? Not “death panels” or McCain aides kneecapping her or Levi Johnston turning out to be the ultimate D-bag? Way to seize the moment, Oprah. As for the book, Mark Halperin’s got a bullet-point sneak preview (nutshell: heavy on media-bashing, light on policy) but this piece at Daily Finance about how it might not end up being the cash cow everyone expects is more interesting. Hmmmm:

If Palin’s advance is as high as $5 million, then HarperCollins wlll need to sell more than 400,000 copies of Going Rogue to cover the advance and expenses for marketing and overhead…

Within the industry, figures for both print runs and pre-orders are notoriously inaccurate. Publishers inflate print-run figures — a good rule of thumb is that the actual print run is half of what’s reported — so the 1.5 million-copy press run of Going Rogue is likely closer to 750,000. The Amazon-Target-Walmart price war has made cheap copies plentiful, but their sites’ “bestseller” rankings indicate high velocity, not necessarily high sales; if several hundred copies of Going Rogue were rapidly pre-ordered, the book would shoot up in the rankings.

I’m going to inch out on the limb and guess that a book promoted with heavily hyped interviews on Oprah, Barbara, Greta, Hannity, and O’Reilly(!) is likely to end up making money. Dude, she was pledging autographed copies at that pro-life event in return for $1,000 donations. The grassroots is going to eat it up.

Incidentally, if you missed her latest Facebook post, she’s now objecting to the characterization of her comments about “In God We Trust” on American coins, insisting that they had nothing to do with Obama. Fair enough, but even so, her point was that they were part of a trend — and as Fox News demonstrates, that “trend” was short-lived. Exit question: How does a good conservative atheist boy support a candidate who thinks “we too often move God to the side in our public life”?

Update: Ever vigilant for media bias, Palin supporters are accusing me in the comments of having written a misleading headline. All I can do is give you what’s in the story. Quote: “Palin demurred and, according to audience members interviewed outside the studio, suggested she was considering the move.” I added “hints” to the headline. Good enough?

Misleading headline. Nowhere does Palin say “I might consider a talk show”. In fact, she never responded.

Oprah is stupid, but she isn’t dumb. She knows if she didn’t give Mrs. Palin a cakewalk interview she’d have caught Hell for it. Afterall, Oprah said Obama is “the one we have been waiting for”. I’m fairly confident Sarah knew this as well.

Be like me. I feel much safer in a MOB of Christians than one on one with a muslim. (Yes, I work with some of ‘em). Just know that people like Sarah Palin (and it’s the majority in the U.S.) aren’t interested in killing you, Allahpundit.

AP: to answer your question, you have to decide what is core to your life and figure out if Sarah (if she runs and if she makes it past the nomination process) is more in line with your values than Obama.

Personally, my guess is you’ll still vote for the Megan McCain.

He never ceases to amaze me. Bravo!

Palin with a talk show? I think it’ll be a bad idea. I’m a Palinista and I think it will diminish her. She’ll be on TV/Radio everyday or each week and she won’t be such a commodity as she is now.

Tension between Sarah Palin and Oprah Winfrey? Big shocker given Oprah foisted this idiot upon us all her “ONE”. Oh and I gather she (Oprah) thinks Denmark’s socialist system is far superior to our own. Something tells me these two powerful woman don’t exactly share much common ground. And lest we forget Oprah Winfrey stuck up her nose at Palin during the campaign, something about “Maybe after the election I don’t want to be biased” or words to that effect.

Sharr on November 11, 2009 at 9:14 PM

Palin already has her own shows, whenever she shows up the rating of that show skyrockets.

I am pretty sure her book is going to make money. Even if Amazon and Wal-Mart are in a price war they still have to buy the books for what they were listed for. The profits of Amazon and Wal-Mart would go down not the book. If Amazon and Wal-Mart didn’t think they’d make money off the book there is no way they’d lower the price.

Exit question: How does a good conservative atheist boy support a candidate who thinks “we too often move God to the side in our public life”?

Hey it’s a big tent. It’s her opinion and others have that same opinion. That’s the beauty of America even if our beliefs are different doesn’t mean our values or principals are different.

I don’t think the coin thing bothers me much. I see her point. I think people are making a bigger deal out of that than needs to be.

I suppose you would have to ask yourself the question, “Does this harm me in any way whatsoever?” And, if you’re not an idiot, you would answer no and support someone who stands for pretty much everything else you desire in your government. If you’re sitting around waiting for a candidate who refuses to say “God bless America” in public, you’ll be waiting a very very long time.

Sounds like Palin is playing her cards fairly close to her chest and not revealing definitely what it is she intends to do. Its a smart play in a way because it prevents her critics from being able to pin her down into a particular role. By being non committal about what she intends to do career wise she can keep her political opponents and media critics off balance and unable to come up with a specific strategy to deal with her.

As for How a good conservative atheist boy can support a candidate who thinks “we too often move God to the side in our public life”? You do it The same way a good conservative Christan boy can support conservative candidates of different faiths or even no faith and that is by focusing more on the big issues that are important to conservatives like a strong national defence, limited Government, and fiscal conservatism and also by examining a candidates record and in Palin’s case how she governed Alaska during her time as Governor to get an idea about how she would lead if she were to be elected President. Remember a persons actions speak louder than their words.

Oprah asked Palin if she’d consider a TV talk show, and Palin gave her stock answer when asked about her future: “I’m not ruling anything out.” That’s it. The audience member was likely not familiar enough with Palin to know that is how she always answers such questions.

Exit question: How does a good conservative atheist boy support a candidate who thinks “we too often move God to the side in our public life”?

How did she Govern Alaska?

Atheists are not very tolerant of people with faith. But to answer the exit question, there would not be any candidate who wouldn’t be a person of faith. An atheist is simply not going to run for president.

Oprah “kept on her and on her,” said Lauren Espie of Oprah’s inquiries into Palin’s plans to host a talk show. But Palin “bluntly never responded.”

Ha, like all Liberals Okras’ skeered of the Sarahcuda,
Skeered she’ll be in those long unemployment lines the Pinnochio Presidente is cookin up if the Sarahcuda jumps into the talk show biz,

Liberals beware the prey has become the pedator,
the hunted the hunter!

Skeered of the pitbulls bite?
Sickem Sarah Sickem Girl!

Oooooo…. ratings death match between Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck. But would Sarah wear lederhosen? Mmmm mmmm mmmm.

bitsy on November 11, 2009 at 9:21 PM

She could just be a guest host for Glenn when his next organ explodes!

Talk shows are so much easier than actually completing one’s work as an elected official.
Better book her for half a season, though…

I added “hints” to the headline. Good enough?

If you really want to know – and I suspect you don’t since you were such an ass in your update – you could add “Oprah audience member says…” at the beginning. That would be accurate, considering the story also says Palin “bluntly never responded.”

I think I have now become a sage. When I started calling her “Puckabee”, it was because she was a beauty queen trying to act like a hokey know nothing to win the dummies, like Huck with his Gomer Pyle of the cloth routine (See Brer Rabbit Foreign Affairs piece), combined with the Hockey mom meme (of course now she is a reluctant Hockey Grandma, hahahaha). I really didn’t think she was going to put so much stock into the polls that she is trying to out Christ Huckabee.

I will never refer to her as Palin again, it is Puckabee from now on with no exceptions. She has become the “Puckabee”.

Hey Sarah could do Big Brother and we can lock her in the house with botox nan, harry reid, plugs, and find a few others so she can discuss politics with them. LOL

With that crowd I think Celebrity Death Match would probably be a better format to use.
