Video: Obama’s eulogy at Fort Hood

A good speech with a superb ending. Skip ahead to 11:18 of the clip or scroll down to the paragraph that begins “For history is filled with heroes” and go from there. This isn’t the first time The One’s risen to the occasion for a military address: His speech at Camp Lejeune in February was also surprisingly strong, albeit surreal given his prior rhetoric on Iraq. (Same here in the jarringly Bushian line, “They have extended the opportunity of self-government to peoples that have suffered tyranny and war.”) I don’t know if his speechwriters are simply inspired by the subject or if his military rhetoric profits from the contrast with his usual gassy “we are the world” Hopenchange pap, but he did well today. And laying a challenge coin at each of the memorials was an elegant tribute.

Stephanopoulos thinks The One signaled here that he too now subscribes to the terrorism theory of Hasan’s attack. I think that’s already fairly clear from the fact that the president and Gen. Casey attended today; a simple lone nut scenario involving a guy who, say, just got laid off and opened fire in frustration wouldn’t have drawn the same response. Most of you will have read the new WaPo story by now about Hasan delivering a jihadbot lecture at Walter Reed two years ago during what was supposed to have been a medical presentation. What you might not have read is Time’s new piece confirming that that wasn’t the only time he got his jihad on in full view of military personnel:

This officer said he was so surprised when Hasan gave a talk about “the war on terror being a war on Islam” that he asked the lieutenant colonel running the course what Hasan’s presentation had to do with health care. “I raised my hand and asked, `Why are you letting this go on — this has nothing to do with environmental health.’ The course director said, `I’m just going to let him go.’” The topic of Hasan’s presentation, the officer says, had been approved in advance by the lieutenant colonel.

A retired four-star officer says that, based on the evidence gleaned so far, it was Hasan’s career that should have been cut short. “They could have given — him a dishonorable discharge and said what he’s doing works against good order and discipline,” said the general, who also requested anonymity. But rather than any preferential treatment given to Hasan because of his religion, “My guess is he fell through the cracks,” the general said.

The officer who was at Hasan’s presentation thinks “the cracks” had nothing to do with it, that it was a straight-up case of political correctness that kept him on. Exit quotation from Patrick Poole, who lectured an audience of officers about this very problem two years ago and is still waiting for concrete action to be taken: “The military brass can’t claim that they haven’t been warned.”

I know I have said this before but if this is true maybe the president could be more circumspect about the adjectives he uses to label his political opponents. Especially those who are constituents.

He didn’t write the speech. This is just like his pre-election campaign when his prepared speeches were of completely different tone from his extemporaneous yammerings.

Sorry; I can’t give him any credit here. The history that has occurred within your own lifetimes says that what he did was out of political calculation, not heartfelt sentiment.

He did better than I expected on the speech. At least he indicated that these soldiers died as part of a war and not because of some “inexplicable” cause.

I continue to hope that Obama will grow a mature soul in his job as he comes face to face with real Americans, real patriots, and must contrast them with the caricatures he has been taught.

He wrote as much of this speech as he wrote Dreams From My Father. But he delivered it well. Give it a break.

Yes, I was surprised, but he delivered a good speech. I’m glad. I don’t believe he meant a word of it, but I’m so glad for the families and friends that he was respectful.

We are in a world of trouble in this country; I don’t know what it’s going to take to get people to see what is really happening. I was listening to Neopolitano on Beck a little while ago. He was talking about states nullifying federal laws. Maybe this is an avenue toward stemming the tide, I don’t know, but something has to be done. rightistliberal on November 10, 2009 at 5:29 PM

You know what? I can remember when liberals thought that Saddam Hussein was a bad guy. They supported regime change and sanctions right up until the time they thought it was politically advantageous not to. The Clinton administration had years to turn Saddam loose if he was such a victim.

This is the thing about liberals, whether it is Kerry talking about Americans behaving like the raping pillaging armies of Genghis Khan or Ted Kennedy comparing the US military to the regime of Saddam Hussein and Dick Durbin comparing them to the Nazis: liberals support the US military when and if it works for them and even then it is usually a short term support, the kind of support that disappears when things get tough.

So don’t come on a blog like this frequented by people who have supported the military even when it was a not a cool thing to do and pretend to be put out by people who fail to kiss Obama’s behind.

Terrye on November 10, 2009 at 5:38 PM

Unfortunately, this speech will get all the press, not the image of soldiers saluting their fallen brethren. I will never forget watching a group of three soldiers moving from each memorial in military fashion saluting each one. My heart ached for each of them and the families who lost loved ones in the massacre. However, watching those who protect my freedom illustrate the ultimate level of respect for these heroes even as they grieved encouraged me to keep the faith our country will remain the greatest in the world.

To all of the selfless men and women who protect my freedom and the freedom of my children…THANK YOU!

What kudos? “President” Obama is the hood ornament for the politically correct ambulance which gave birth to this islamic terrorist massacre. Just today the MaOist himself was postulating garden variety stress as a reason for this evil. Has anyone forgotten his ballcupping saluteless Pledge of Allegiance? Once you draw a line, it stays drawn. What’s this garbage of “let’s give credit when it’s due?” Obama has declared WAR on you, and you can still muster some kind of truce to evaluate his telepromter reading? The fact that he comes anywhere near our troops, whether it be for a photo op in the dead of night or to play healer in chief, is a vile scene too revolting to stomach. The troops are props for the impOster.

When he’s properly scripted and prepared, Obama can sound very good, very convincing. The problem is that when he isn’t, he shows himself to be callous and self-centered. So it’s hard to actually believe that even though he sounds as if he feels something here, that he actually feels anything at all, except maybe some concern about his own political hide. He failed to show leadership when he needed to; this is too late to fill the gap he left.

The ability to read good speeches written by others from 2 teleprompters is what got this man elected. He is otherwise an empty suit.

I had to provide proof to my own mom, an Obama Cultist, that he uses teleprompters! She actually thought all the speeches he delievered on the campaign trail were from “the heart!” And my mom is an intelligent person! I also have tried to convince her that he, like all other presidents, uses speechwriters.

Anyway, that’s trivial. RIP to these soliders, thoughts & prayers to their families and friends.

visions on November 10, 2009 at 5:58 PM

Excellent remarks from the President. Listened to the whole thing just for good measure. No objections to anything he said. President Bush could have given the same remarks and I would have said the same thing.

I will make only one observation concerning the politicis of the matter. I recall that President Clinton gave a similarly heartfelt speech at the memorial for the Oklahoma City victims back in 1995. He had just had his head handed to him in the 1994 mid-terms, but I recall that his speech in OKC appeared to begin the process of political rehabilitation that led to his re-election in 1996.

It’s all about credibitility folks, and this speech, like President Clinton’s will restore some of President Obama’s credibility with some of the electorate. Whether such calculations went into the preparation and delivery of this speech today or not, it is simply the truth of the matter. There will be many who view this speech as a heartfelt attempt to truly grieve with the families of the fallen, and the MSM will make sure this speech gets wide airplay throughout the country. “See, President Obama truly empathizes with our men and women in uniform. He only wants what is best for our nation. Give him a chance.”

This, the same day we hear that he wants to go to Hiroshima, no doubt to apologize for the brutality of another American president.

Speedwagon82 on November 10, 2009 at 6:26 PM

And that’s collapsing, too.

Liam on November 10, 2009 at 6:31 PM

Mongo Mere Pawn on November 10, 2009 at 5:58 PM

I have no doubt there is truth in this. Obama will try to use this to help himself.

Terrye on November 10, 2009 at 6:32 PM

No one can at this point still doubt that Obama can deliver a good speech, can they? Nor that his speechwriters can rise to the occasion and provide him good words?

What’s important though, isn’t the delivery. Nor the words.

No, not at all.

What’s important is whether his words lend creedence to his actions.

And when it comes to anything except his oft revealed narcissism and pseudo-intellectual devotion to failed economic and social models, his words mean little indeed.

President Pretty Princess speaks prettily indeed.

Why should that be impressive?

Whoever wrote it seems to have some reverence for the military which The Won has not shown previously. I am going to be nitpic a bit though. His descriptions of those who lost their lives were things I had already read about them. I feel that the research into those folks should have been deeper and not just anything found on the Web.

Political points are the most fleeting of all. Remember–the electorate is fickle. And, Obama can’t keep what he gets for long. He’s a squanderer, living for the moment.

People like him never last long in the political arena. In a few days the MSM will forget this tidy speech, moving to something else to enhance their guy. This is already fading into the dustbin of history.

Liam on November 10, 2009 at 6:37 PM

….come here do so just to disrupt and hurt the hearts of decent people….run rampant with vile tactics done with an express purpose of hurting us….reasoned and polite discourse among average people….stomp hurting hearts here, denigrating ours feelings–even those among women

Oh spare me the two-faced platitudinous dog swill. You’re so picked on by the mean trolls who stomp on your decent hearted, reasonable and polite hatred of all things liberal, gay people, Muslims…basically anyone who’s not you. You’re like a classic Southerner. Magnolias and polite smiles out in the parlor, horse whips and prejudice back in the kitchen.

“Good hearted.” Barf.

I think Obama recognized that people wanted him to show respect and reverence for the military today. It was their day, it would have been foolish and self destructive for Obama to fail to rise to the occasion.

I read somewhere that the military had an approval rating of almost 80% among the people of the United States, no other major institution comes close.

You come here for one reason only, to pick a fight and then when you get one you play the victim.

Face it, liberals have been crapping on the US military for so many years that no one believes your crap anymore. And if the man in the White House had an R behind his name, you not only would not watch his speech, you would probably be accusing him of masterminding the assault.

What did I expect? I expected him to give an eloquent speech revering the military because he is the president and it is his job and he would look like an idiot if he did anything else. So I think he really tried today to sound as if he gives a damn, even though he does not.

and btw, Bush was president too and somehow that never stopped the lefties from calling him a liar and a monster and all sorts of things, so spare me the lectures you little troll.

Great speech President Obama.

Please note how lib sarcasm runs rampant over and above genuine discourse. Mocking, insults–we know the rest.

One person dares saying the rest of us here aren’t decent–one who claims a moral high ground. And libs say we’re the arrogant ones!

crr6:

It was a great speech, sounding more like Bush than Obama. If he had sounded like himself, it would have been condescending and self involved. But someone said, go out there and say the sort of thing that Bush might say.

Terrye on November 10, 2009 at 6:49 PM

Terrye on November 10, 2009 at 6:46 PM

Best not to waste time. A lib’s idea of talk has nothing to do with genuine discourse. We all know that, we’ve seen how they who come here from the other side do things. We have nothing to defend despite their accusations. We know how they do things, how nothing ever gets accomplished when dealing with them. Hell, they staunchly REFUSE to be willing to agree to disagree.

The history of their posts tell all, whichever way people want to decide for themselves.

Liam on November 10, 2009 at 6:51 PM

Well, I’m personally relieved he didn’t dial it in. It’s not a day about him, anyway. It was a memorial for those who died.

Jeesh* I better switch to the Clinton thread. That’ll rile me back up against you guys. *haha
