Video: Obama’s eulogy at Fort Hood

posted at 4:13 pm on November 10, 2009 by Allahpundit

A good speech with a superb ending. Skip ahead to 11:18 of the clip or scroll down to the paragraph that begins “For history is filled with heroes” and go from there. This isn’t the first time The One’s risen to the occasion for a military address: His speech at Camp Lejeune in February was also surprisingly strong, albeit surreal given his prior rhetoric on Iraq. (Same here in the jarringly Bushian line, “They have extended the opportunity of self-government to peoples that have suffered tyranny and war.”) I don’t know if his speechwriters are simply inspired by the subject or if his military rhetoric profits from the contrast with his usual gassy “we are the world” Hopenchange pap, but he did well today. And laying a challenge coin at each of the memorials was an elegant tribute.

Stephanopoulos thinks The One signaled here that he too now subscribes to the terrorism theory of Hasan’s attack. I think that’s already fairly clear from the fact that the president and Gen. Casey attended today; a simple lone nut scenario involving a guy who, say, just got laid off and opened fire in frustration wouldn’t have drawn the same response. Most of you will have read the new WaPo story by now about Hasan delivering a jihadbot lecture at Walter Reed two years ago during what was supposed to have been a medical presentation. What you might not have read is Time’s new piece confirming that that wasn’t the only time he got his jihad on in full view of military personnel:

This officer said he was so surprised when Hasan gave a talk about “the war on terror being a war on Islam” that he asked the lieutenant colonel running the course what Hasan’s presentation had to do with health care. “I raised my hand and asked, `Why are you letting this go on — this has nothing to do with environmental health.’ The course director said, `I’m just going to let him go.’” The topic of Hasan’s presentation, the officer says, had been approved in advance by the lieutenant colonel.

A retired four-star officer says that, based on the evidence gleaned so far, it was Hasan’s career that should have been cut short. “They could have given — him a dishonorable discharge and said what he’s doing works against good order and discipline,” said the general, who also requested anonymity. But rather than any preferential treatment given to Hasan because of his religion, “My guess is he fell through the cracks,” the general said.

The officer who was at Hasan’s presentation thinks “the cracks” had nothing to do with it, that it was a straight-up case of political correctness that kept him on. Exit quotation from Patrick Poole, who lectured an audience of officers about this very problem two years ago and is still waiting for concrete action to be taken: “The military brass can’t claim that they haven’t been warned.”

Remember…everything Obama says has an expiration date.

It’s ok, looks like we can point back to this speech when he slashes the military budget, bows before dictators, and throws Israel to the wolves in Iran.

It will be the new rallying cry: “But but but, remember the speeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeech!!!!! His speech really made me feel like he loved the military for at least 10 minutes!”

Words are certainly important. But, it’s ACTION that I’m looking for and NOT seeing. The man has a talent for delivering a carefully worded speech – no doubt about it. But there’s little doubt that he’ll be right back on the campaign stump tomorrow, seeking to turn this country into the “Former United States of America”.

It seems like they give them out like candy these days.

You’re supposed to be able to whip one out at a bar, and anyone that can’t equal it has to buy you a drink. If they trump it you buy. Though I’ve been in a lot of bars and have never actually seen anyone do that.

BadgerHawk on November 10, 2009 at 4:39 PM

We have been at war so long now. The soldiers deserve them like candy. This has been such a long difficult fight… sometimes it feels like the fight is not just with jihadi’s but with many Democrats as well.

The President should give honor to them like this every day. Maybe he has seen enough now that he can see the damage he has done to them in the past…

NO that is just wishful thinking.

It gave me a tear when Obama when around at the end. I thought he was placing their purple heart by the pictures but it was a Commander’s Coin.

I wonder if they would still get purple hearts as they where killed in the war on terror.

When will Ogabe be flying over to Afghanistan to give a speech to our soldiers who are shot at and bombed every day by jihadist Muslims?

Maybe when they have the next Olympic vote he could stop by. That date should coincide with when all of McChrystal’s requested troops arrive.

Emily M. on November 10, 2009 at 4:20 PM

Exactly what I was thinking while watching. He was reading a good speech. Bush would have been in tears halfway through, and Clinton would have at least faked a little emotion. The coins were a nice touch, though. The cheering and clapping as Obama took the stage was pretty disturbing too, since this was a military memorial and not a Democrat one. I hardly believe those cheers came from the military members assembled…I guess the press just couldn’t contain themselves.

rightistliberal on November 10, 2009 at 4:38 PM

Interesting.

So, (for Badger enjoyment) the reason I recieved a USMC coin was for a funerl of a young USMC corp and a older USMC Sgt (WWII) who both died on the same day and were both related. The Corp’s man was in afghanistan and him grandfather the Sgt had passed away quietly and no one could pick up either as they were thei only family.

I donated MY time to both these Marines, took off for a week.. picked up the Corp and flew back to Alaska when his grandfather wanted to be buried and asked the Sgt Major of the army base to help me as well as the Marine ad with the funeral prep. I also had a few other items for these two brave men… and had their Marine family there to honor them in death.

WTF have you done? Have you ever done anything besides piss and moan? WTF has Obama done besides a speech? The Families deserved more then that… maybe you should get that through your head.

A challenge coin? I am unfamiliar with these but what exactly do you “challenge” a dead soldier to do? Decompose uniformly?

I don’t get it.

Guardian on November 10, 2009 at 4:25 PM

Ed mis-used the vernacular. “Challenge coins” are usually specific coins for a military outfit or organization. Traditionally one member of an organization pulls his coin and begins tapping the coin on a table, in an NCO club or service club but any bar will do. Every other member of the same unit pulls their coin out and begins tapping them until one poor sod who doesn’t have his coin has to buy a round for every other member of the unit who has thier coins. If everyone has the coin the guy who started the “challenge” then has to buy a round.

The origins of the “challenge coins” are vague and varied. In the USAF they seem to go back to aircraft gunners in the Army Air Force who used to get a coin called the “bulldog coin” about the size of an old half dollar. In the club a gunner would start tapping his coin and so forth.

You can also cchallenge another member of your unit by pulling your coin out at an inopportune time. In 1992 when I was in Mogidushu, Somalia I met the Senior Enlisted Advisor from the Air Mobility Command. I was the only E-9 (CMSGT) at Mogadishu and when he got off the plane he challenged me with his E9 coin (mine was safely tucked away at my home in Illinois) He made me buy a bottle of scotch for the Chief’s group when I returned.

I’m still plotting my revenge 17 years later!!!

BadgerHawk on November 10, 2009 at 4:56 PM

All states lower their flags in a soldier from their state dies. Sometimes it is multi state. But the U.S. Flag is never lowered unless the president says and all flags on the poles are switched out daily. Most are given to the Fallen’s family.. some are auctioned off. The Flags come with a statement of the day they were flown.

Oops, this is my full reply on “Challenge coins”

Ed misused the vernacular. “Challenge coins” are usually specific coins for a military outfit or organization. Traditionally one member of an organization pulls his coin and begins tapping the coin on a table, in an NCO club or service club but any bar will do. Every other member of the same unit pulls their coin out and begins tapping them until one poor sod who doesn’t have his coin has to buy a round for every other member of the unit who has their coins. If everyone has the coin the guy who started the “challenge” then has to buy a round.

The coins Ed was referring to are the “courtesy coins” usually handed out by senior officers on special events. For instance a senior officer inducted into the “Order of The Sword” by his /her NCOs would be expected to hand out his coin to all the attendees. It’s not used as a challenge coin, those are specific to units, groups, pay grades, etc.

The origins of the “challenge coins” are vague and varied. In the USAF they seem to go back to aircraft gunners in the Army Air Force who used to get a coin called the “bulldog coin” about the size of an old half dollar. In the club a gunner would start tapping his coin and so forth.

missed the part where Obama said we will honor the memory of the 14 dead by rooting out radical Jihad wherever we may find it.

Mr. Obama made absolutely certain to distinguish himself again as NOT Bush. Decency was the best hope.

This was a eulogy, not an opening argument in a court of law prosecuting terrorists. Unfortunately, of his own accord, Mr. Obama will make certain to subvert the judicial process in favor of jihad that he insists is a myth, as with the denial that there is a war on terror (or any harm in further debt to international powers, specifically China). After all, Obama appointed Holder as Attorney General though Holder has explicit conflict of interest in favor of defending the Jihadists who performed the heinous terrorism against America on 9-11-01, and Holder has explicit conflict of interest to enable Black Liberation Theology and New Black Panther domestic terrorists intimidating and accosting citizens attempting to legally vote in peace.

Those who believe in God, we are at the point where we must pray for the preservation of our divinely inspired Constitution, for God to work on Obama to do what is right for our Constitutional Republic, and for God to prevent Obama from further harming our Constitutional Republic.

Why should we dismiss the murders and woundings that Hasan performed against his American comrades at Ft. Hood now that the Memorial Eulogy by Pres.Obama is said? We should not turn the page as if PC is not yet the same threat as ever.

the man has a delivery and a cadence that is better than any president since Reagan.

Pavel on November 10, 2009 at 5:02 PM

Yeah, that’s what is important in a speech, delivery and cadence.

BTW, he has the most monotonous cadence I have ever heard and his delivery would stop in it’s tracks if the teleprompter broke down.

fogw on November 10, 2009 at 5:08 PM

A good speech with a superb ending.

Get a room.

So BlowBumble can read a script that someone else has written for him. We’re giving Teh One credit for being literate now? Raaacccissst!

PC and a lack of Occam’s Razor led to this tragedy. Let’s hope that when an obvious situation presents itself in the future, we all apply a little common sense. This could just as easily been a shopping mall full of civilians.

Let us also hope the wheels of justice don’t get bogged down in a turf battle.

Someone else mentioned that they were from a local mosque.

BadgerHawk on November 10, 2009 at 5:04 PM

I asked my source if he has a source (I could find none on google). Do you have one? And if they were local, what was the point in having them show up and hang with the potus? To rub it in?

Blake on November 10, 2009 at 5:11 PM

I did not start it. Look at the first few comments.

rightistliberal on November 10, 2009 at 5:06 PM

And here I thought you said you weren’t in kindergarden.

sammypants on November 10, 2009 at 5:11 PM

That’s better than sounding like a moron.

rightistliberal on November 10, 2009 at 5:08 PM

So, like–you’re saying you’re better than yourself?

Or do you find pride being an imbecile?

Why not go someplace where you and the rest of your kind can feel happy ‘yessing’ yourselves to death? Really–you and the others of your kind who come here don’t want to change minds. You seek only to hurt the hearts of good people. You think yourself somehow better, somehow justified. But hurtful people, against those of us here who have lost loved ones, are not nice people at all.

Thank you for the link, the pictures are just heartbreaking. All of the families are in my prayers.

Lip service on the part of the most anti-military, disgraceful and disgusting Chief Executive to ever walk the Earth.

Nothing more.

Ryan Gandy on November 10, 2009 at 5:13 PM

And all the libs boycotted, didn’t they?

Nah–no question of their patriotism.

Liam on November 10, 2009 at 5:05 PM

To be honest, most people try to behave themselves at times like that. Back when I was a sweet young thing, I watched Kerry on TV calling our troops murderers..today very few people will say that sort of thing in public, except the 20% that call themselves liberal anyway. But no, this is Indiana, people don’t tolerate disrepectful behavior toward the military.

Unless you are in the Peoples Republic of Bloomington.

Mission Accomplished, kid.

Del Dolemonte on November 10, 2009 at 5:13 PM

I see no evidence that Obama did a good job–just some people saying he did. I think he did OK, but that’s about it.

Christien on November 10, 2009 at 5:14 PM

And who are you to decide that, jackass?

upinak: You forget, the bar is so low that when Obama and his people do something right he is aclaimed (Well, maybe aclaimed is to much). Is it a bone to real America, or do his words mean something.

davod on November 10, 2009 at 5:15 PM

They don’t want truth, they don’t want so much as polite discourse.

Please! Don’t respond to them. Their aim is to hurt hearts, not win minds or persuade to their point of view. Look how they slander us and walk away feeling GOOD about it!

Please–ignore them.

First successful terrorist attack since 9/11 - just 10 months into Obama’s watch. What did the demon-in-cheif know and when did he know it? Wasn’t he briefed about this guy, since the FBI was watching him and he had contacted Al Quaida? I want answers from Obama – WE HAVE HAD ANOTHER TERRORIST ATTACK ON DOMESTIC SOIL ON HIS WATCH – THE FAMILIES OF THE DEAD SHOULD DEMAND ANSWERS FROM THIS TREASONOUS B#$%^rd. NOW!!!

tigerlily on November 10, 2009 at 5:17 PM

At least they have not been sending them to fight wars on false premises or issuing statements like “you fight with the army you have” and if that means you get blown up because vehicles lack armor, so be it.

Anyways, we can continue this war on some other thread.

For now, all I want to say is thank you. And RIP.

1. What you stated are refutable lies.
2. Drop dead.
