Video: Obama’s eulogy at Fort Hood

posted at 4:13 pm on November 10, 2009 by Allahpundit

A good speech with a superb ending. Skip ahead to 11:18 of the clip or scroll down to the paragraph that begins “For history is filled with heroes” and go from there. This isn’t the first time The One’s risen to the occasion for a military address: His speech at Camp Lejeune in February was also surprisingly strong, albeit surreal given his prior rhetoric on Iraq. (Same here in the jarringly Bushian line, “They have extended the opportunity of self-government to peoples that have suffered tyranny and war.”) I don’t know if his speechwriters are simply inspired by the subject or if his military rhetoric profits from the contrast with his usual gassy “we are the world” Hopenchange pap, but he did well today. And laying a challenge coin at each of the memorials was an elegant tribute.

Stephanopoulos thinks The One signaled here that he too now subscribes to the terrorism theory of Hasan’s attack. I think that’s already fairly clear from the fact that the president and Gen. Casey attended today; a simple lone nut scenario involving a guy who, say, just got laid off and opened fire in frustration wouldn’t have drawn the same response. Most of you will have read the new WaPo story by now about Hasan delivering a jihadbot lecture at Walter Reed two years ago during what was supposed to have been a medical presentation. What you might not have read is Time’s new piece confirming that that wasn’t the only time he got his jihad on in full view of military personnel:

This officer said he was so surprised when Hasan gave a talk about “the war on terror being a war on Islam” that he asked the lieutenant colonel running the course what Hasan’s presentation had to do with health care. “I raised my hand and asked, `Why are you letting this go on — this has nothing to do with environmental health.’ The course director said, `I’m just going to let him go.’” The topic of Hasan’s presentation, the officer says, had been approved in advance by the lieutenant colonel.

A retired four-star officer says that, based on the evidence gleaned so far, it was Hasan’s career that should have been cut short. “They could have given — him a dishonorable discharge and said what he’s doing works against good order and discipline,” said the general, who also requested anonymity. But rather than any preferential treatment given to Hasan because of his religion, “My guess is he fell through the cracks,” the general said.

The officer who was at Hasan’s presentation thinks “the cracks” had nothing to do with it, that it was a straight-up case of political correctness that kept him on. Exit quotation from Patrick Poole, who lectured an audience of officers about this very problem two years ago and is still waiting for concrete action to be taken: “The military brass can’t claim that they haven’t been warned.”

Obama Suggests Still Possible Hasan May Have Cracked Under Stress

What good does it really do?

Sir Napsalot on November 10, 2009 at 4:19 PM

With all the evidence now coming out regarding the signals that Hasan has been sending for years and how the brass have chosen to ignore them.

Has the govt left itself open for any wrongfull death suits?

I realize that the cases for the military dead vs. the civilian contractor dead will fall under different laws.

Everything that man does is calculated to make him look good. So he was made to look patriotic today.

And then he’ll go back to apologizing for America. As the Green Room post notes, he wants to go to Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Not hard to figure out why.

This whole problem of Jihadi’s in the military could be solved by a simple question as part of the entrance questions for anyone planning to enlist.

Are you a Muslim?

If yes, throw the application in the trash.

End of problem.

It really is that simple.

Like it or not, we are at war with Islam. Islam declared war on the USA a long time ago. To believe otherwise is foolish.

Good speech. It seems Obama is coming around to the possibility that this was related to the war on terror overseas contingency operation.

I won’t give BHO any props just yet. There may be a White House announcement tomorrow that it was the wrong speech on BHO’s teleprompter.

You know, kind of like the 40,000 troops he was going to deploy to Afghanistan.

PoliTech on November 10, 2009 at 4:22 PM

For the sake of the families of the fallen in attendance I’m relieved he kept the emphasis of the speech in the proper place. Laying the coins was also nice.

Unfortunately, when it comes to the military, his gestures just seem so empty.

I saw that and thought, “Great, he’s helping whatever diminished capacity/insanity defense is available under the UCMJ. [not that it would fly very far with Hasan's jury of his peers - fellow officers]. And perhaps he’s signaling he would never sign the death warrant for Hasan, if that’s what the jury gives Hasan.”

He let his true feelings be known when he gave his shout out. This is just the show that he has to put on because he is president. It needed to happen and I’m glad the words were good even if the speaker is a hollow man.

Theworldisnotenough on November 10, 2009 at 4:25 PM

Sorry, I think that it’s rhetorically ineffective to have a clown such as Obama rattle off personal anecdotes about those who died. It works for me only if the anecdotes come from someone who knows the fallen personally.

Also, listen for the emphasis that he places on the word “faiths” when he speaks of the composition of our military. Why is that point even relevant for the occasion other than to say, “Hands off the muslims.”

I confess, as far as I’m concerned, Obama and anything military are oxymoronic.

The One’s risen to the occasion for a military address: His speech at Camp Lejeune in February was also surprisingly strong, albeit surreal

What is surreal is NOT reality. ‘Surreal’ is an art form, having a connotation of art and fantasy. It’s in the minds of the painters, having nothing to do with reality. Think of an acid trip…

Obama, as president-in-name-only, should have stuck to reality. Reagan got it, got the difference, the night after Challenger exploded.

I find no equation between a real president and one in-name-only.

Why are we calling what the FBI and the Army did to condone terrorism as ” PC”? I know the term has historical significance, but what our authorities are doing against our country and its people to placate muslims is not by any strech an act of PCness. Its plain and simple muslim-appeasement, pandering to terrorism and aiding and abetting in the killings of Americans.
“PC “does not begin to describe the intensity of hate these people have against our country and its people. How far these people , starting from WH to DOHS to DOJ to Army file-pushers will go to protect a muslim terrorist , even AFTER he has killed 14 people is not “PC”, muslim appeasement and pandering to muslim terrorism, and should be called as such.
Shame on you Gen Casey for sounding like a LGBT spokesman addressing SanFransisco City Hall.

This terrorism not only happened on Mr. Obama’s watch, but according to this administration’s PC agenda.

We are diverse. PC does not “make” us diverse.

PC is a Marxist Research Project meant to destroy our Constitution and our American Dream. PC functions within our government to destroy our Constitutional Rights, eliminate the security from rule of law, and distance government officials from their Constitutional responsibilities, charges and duties.

To the extent that PC is enabled, we are doomed.

As soon as PC is seriously and successfully prosecuted for having fostered terrorism and for being un-Constitutional by nature (“special” preferential = prejudicial bias, and “reverse discrimination” denies equality opportunity regardless of race, creed or gender), there’s hope we can believe in.

Impeach PC

At least they have not been sending them to fight wars on false premises or issuing statements like “you fight with the army you have”

So, like Nam, Bosnia, and Somalia never happened, right? A figment of the vast right-wing conspiracy, huh?

I posted daily at dkos for about two years. HotAir doesn’t even come close to that place with regards to venemous hatred.

God Bless our soldiers.

Yet, I wonder how many more speeches he’ll have to give because of his indecisiveness in Afghanistan. I’d rather he give bad speeches and make good decisions.

His first duty is the security and safety of our country, our citizens, and our soldiers, but I don’t expect much of either from a waffling, muslim apologist who’s looking for nothing less than world approval.

Sorry for jumping off topic. It’s not appropriate in this thread.

If Obama made the troops there feel better, fine, more power to him. But I’d be much more willing to set aside differences with the man if I actually thought for a minute he believed what he said.

I’ll e-mail you later tonight once I get home.

No worries.

As for my coins. I got the two in the army years ago, mid 90′s. 1 was for doing CPR on my Col. who was having a heart attack. The other was for helping out a guy with a broken leg who was doing a halo night jump…

The other three are more special to me though.

What he meant to say was “you fight with the army the jerk before you left behind”.

He was being nice and truthful.

As approprate today as tomorrow, a thank you to all who have served and serve still today.

I am not sure how is that relevant to you being a jackass. You are like the Kossians: filled with hate. You guys breed in the same pond.

rightistliberal on November 10, 2009 at 4:38 PM

Seeing how you shifted your target from singular to plural in mid-post, I’m on safe ground in telling you to choke on your ad hominem verbal diarrhea elsewhere.
