As a long time resident and still living here in South Korea, I can tell you that this incident barely got mentioned here today. As a matter of fact, it was only after work that I read about it on the news. However, United States Forces Korea (USFK) just recently announced tour normalization for service members staioned in South Korea. http://www.usfk.mil/usfk/ShowArticle.aspx?ID=355
Dear Leader Kim just doesn’t have the same persona as he once did. As a military buff, I can say he was very lucky that his warship made it back across the Northern Limit Line (NLL) in flames rather than finding its final resting place at the bottom of the West Sea. South Korea has one of the most modern and well equiped militaries in the Pacific region.

I'd prefer that instead it floundered in smoking ruins. Any provocation with the NORKs should be settled, with a clear victor. They need to know that any provocation will end only one way: they lose.

Kim doesn’t benefit by allowing a sense of calm to prevail during this visit; he needs to shake things up in order to undermine Obama’s attempts to unify opposition to his nuclear program.

That’s typical of the ham-handed, mountain bandit-style diplomacy of Pyongyang. North Korea makes the Japanese very nervous; they’ll more likely wind up pushing the new Japanese government closer to Washington.

Just in time for President Obama to slap the Japanese the way he has the British, the Israelis, the Hondurans, the Poles, the Czechs, the Germans…. argh.

The exchange of fire occurred as U.S. officials said President Barack Obama has decided to send a special envoy to Pyongyang for rare direct talks on the communist country’s nuclear weapons program.

Actually, this is a good move on North Korea’s part. There is no way in Hell a President who “won” the Nobel Peace Prize on the day he was Inaugurated will ever want to side with a peaceful democracy. How will making a psychotic aggressor even MORE upset aid the peace process?

You can be sure all the terrorists currently lined up for their Obama photo ops are taking notes right now.

Nope. But it is a carefully selected survival kit, containing 1 change of civilian clothing. This is to be used when the war actually starts. The NK soldiers will immediately change clothes, and run into South Korea where they hope to live happy, normal, food-filled lives.

Technically, the Korean war isn’t over yet. We’re just in a ceasefire. There is no peace treaty as far as I’ve ever heard. I’m sure someone can correct me if I’m wrong on that. But, with that said, I don’t think ‘victory’ can be declared.

If we get a strong GOP candidate who wins in 2012, they will really have a foreign policy mess to clean up. Just imagine if BO dithers on all those issues named above.

I forget the movie, but the British Admiral stands on the steps of his 1850′s ship, under attack and being demolished on both sides, unable to issue the command to ‘fire’, while sailors plead. The ship sinks.

Either side could be telling the truth, but who benefits from an incursion into enemy territory? The South has tried offering appeasements aplenty in an effort to de-escalate tensions on the peninsula. They just announced a restart of badly-needed food shipments to Pyongyang, even after Kim Jong-Il’s latest rocket show off of the coast.

This incident gives South Korea perfect cover for an ultimatum: We’ll stop the food shipments until you dismantle your nukes.

Kim: Char-broiled barbecued uranium. Yummy.
