Happy birthday, Marine Corps!
posted at 2:20 pm on November 10, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Today the Marine Corps celebrates its 234th birthday! The Commandant of the Corps has issued this celebratory video, and all of us at Hot Air want to join in congratulating the fine men and women of the Marine Corps, past and present, on this auspicious occasion:
Almost equally auspicious has been the performance of the Marine Corps team in the Project Valour-IT fundraising contest! Soldiers Angels has its annual Project Valour-IT fundraising drive to provide that technology to as many of these veterans as possible, and the blogosphere has responded by raising more than $81,000! The Marine Corps team has already raised 95% of its goal, leaving the rest of us in the dust.
Eight years of fighting terrorists abroad has wounded many of our men and women in the armed forces, some profoundly enough to make it difficult for them to reintegrate into society without the assistance of the adaptive technology that will allow them to become productive back home. But we need your assistance. We had hoped to raise $125,000 this year, with an understanding that 10.2% unemployment would make that a challenge. We have one day left in the contest; I’m on the Air Force team this year, and you can help wounded veterans receive adaptive-technology laptops to help them regain their productivity by donating now:
It’s difficult to think of a more worthy cause than helping those who lost so much in defending America to return to a normal life. If you can, please donate as much as possible, and help us meet our goal.

Me ‘n major dad as his squadron loads their last 53 into the C-5. They lit out for Saudi Arabia and the First Gulf War about 40 minutes later. (We got stuck behind as our squadron transitioned from our A-6E’s to F-18′s.)

What a nice present to the United States Marine Corp on its birthday!
CHOSIN RESERVOIR NORTH KOREA 1950
Among our still fighting survivors,
many appear to be walking dead,
yet still combat capable.
Two thirds are wounded, yet they carry on.
All are suffering from frostbitten skin.
frozen ears, faces, toes, and fingers
are commonplace.
Some walk on frozen,
thus living on borrowed time.
Their faces are grotesque, dirty, unshaven.
gaunt with hunger from short rations.
All are bone eary from lack of sleep.
They have been under incessant attack
for three days and four nights.
Some of the wounded are so disabled,
they cannot move to generate body heat.
They freeze to death in horrible stiffness.
Equipment and vehicle wreckage
is everywhere
To add to the burden,
it is snowing again…
If low, heavy clouds persist,
There will be no air cover or support
to hold the enemy at bay…
as we move to break out!
Unlike Anita Dunn, I am not a fan of Chairman Mao. Neither are most Marines.

OT and a different branch of the armed services, but the Fort Hood memorial began about five minutes ago.
The second speaker just mentioned a passage from Isaiah that’s used in cases of fallen soldiers. In the passage, the Lord asks, “Whom shall I send?” And each of the fallen soldiers is present to say, “Here, am I, Lord, send me.”

Obama is speaking now at the memorial. Did you hear the women screaming and the celebrity whistles when he ascended the podium? It makes me sick to my stomach. It’s a frickin’ MEMORIAL.
John the Libertarian on November 10, 2009 at 2:56 PM
That pissed off Obama, I expect.
I really think Obama needs to find a way to RISE to being Satan. The Devil would probably make Obama the ‘recipent’ of his watersports.

OT Obama says Hasan stressed: “I think everybody understands how outstanding the young men and women in uniform are under the most severe stress — there are going to be instances in which an individual cracks.”

During the first Gulf War there was a rumor going around that someone called some big hotel in Bagdad and tried to book it for a banquet on 10 Nov 1991. Of course (the story went) the hotel was glad to take the large reservation until it learned the party trying to make the reservation was the USMC.
Too good to be true of course, but a good story anyway.

Thank God for the US Marines, Semper Fi!
Coincidentally, Pres.Obama’s address to the fallen at Ft.Hood was good.
/He needs to quit listing skin colors. “White, Black, Brown” does not include “Yellow and Red” or mixtures. So unless Obama intends to slight members of our military from our own American Native Tribes or from Asia, he needs to become color blind like all mature people are and quit the juvenile color code references. E pluribus unum.

My dad was a thirty year three war (WWII, Korea, Vietnam) combat Marine, most of it in Force Recon. He was one of the first Marines to graduate from the Special Forces school and Ranger school … more decorations than you can count but never a “war story” from him. At times as kid I felt like I lived with the “Great Santini” but in retrospect I would not change a thing. Happy 84th birthday dad! Happy 234th Marines!
