Clinton to Dems: “The reason the tea-baggers are so inflamed is because we are winning”

posted at 5:27 pm on November 10, 2009 by Allahpundit

Bob Menendez made a reference to “teabaggers” last week and Tapper tweeted something about how you never know when a politician uses that term if he/she is aware of its sexual application.

I’m pretty sure the Clenis is aware.

Former President Bill Clinton told a room full of Democratic senators Tuesday that passing health care reform — which he failed to do 15 years ago — is not only a moral issue but also “an economic imperative.”

Clinton argued that even “the most cold-hearted person” ought to support health care reform simply from an economic standpoint. He reminded Democrats of the political momentum their failure to pass reform in 1993 delivered the House of Representatives to the Republicans the following year…

Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) said Clinton described the ongoing tea party protests against the Democratic agenda as a sign his party was making progress.

Whitehouse quoted Clinton arguing: “The reason the tea-baggers are so inflamed is because we are winning.”…

He stressed to Democrats that they can always go back and retool initiatives and amend whatever overhaul they pass, calling it, “a big complex organic thing.”

I think he’s right that they’re winning, actually, if “winning” is defined in terms of whether a bill passes or not. The abortion death struggle will give Reid a headache and they’ll probably have to end up dropping the public option, but Clinton’s strategy is a sound one: Pass anything you can pass now, then spend next year doing whatever it takes to woo voters and minimize the inevitable GOP gains in the midterms. The ratchet on federal entitlements only turns one way, i.e. towards expansion, and it’s a lot easier to make the ratchet turn when Congress’s every move isn’t under the media microscope the way it is now. All they have to do is ask themselves a simple question: Do they think they can hold both Houses next year? If yes, then the smart thing to do is to pass whatever they can, bid a few vulnerable Blue Dogs farewell, and use their reduced majorities to finish the job on the bill next year, under the radar while some other issue has America’s attention.

As grim as the polls are lately for ObamaCare, Ace is probably right that only a further steep slide into the 60+% realm will scare enough Dems in the Senate that the entire initiative will have to be scrapped. Which, of course, was the point of sending the Clenis to the Hill today — to remind them, in physical form, of what happens in congressional elections when major health-care bills are taken up and then dropped. No wonder either that the GOP is trying to kickstart tea-party activism anew: Until just this past week, ObamaCare’s polling reached its nadir in August, during the townhall protests. If popular outcry can spike again up to or near the 60 percent range, Senate Blue Dogs may feel they have no choice but to walk away again, 1994 notwithstanding. Exit question: Who’ll end up teabagging whom?

Update: A centrist Democrat from a newly red state holds a finger to the wind and sends a signal.

Besides its a bit rich for a man to make fun of a grass roots political organisation by describing them with a euphemism for a sexual act that unlike most members of the Tea Party movement he has most probably physically performed himself given his well known philandering and proclivity risky sexual affairs.

If by winning Bubba means, misrepresentation, deception, guile, lies, manipulations, spin doctors, partisan parliamentary tactics, and unchallenged propaganda by our self-appointed watch dog media, then yes they are winning.

I know it is hard for astute political junkies like us to understand, but the majority of the Obama electorate are still oblivious to the true aims of these radical marxists. They believe the slogans, spin, and euphemisms. Most are intellectually incapable of equating his policies and agenda with marxism, and Obama and his Svengalis are exploiting this ignorance. When these people finally awaken and realize they are now serfs it will be too late.

DeathB4Tyranny on November 10, 2009 at 5:58 PM

The fact that they’re sending WJC up to give the Dems senators a pep talk shows that this is in trouble of falling apart. Maybe not by much, but this is far from a sure thing. The problem that Obama and Co. have is that the Senate leaves for three weeks tomorrow which puts them back in town on Dec. 2nd. That means that Obama will have one more bad UE month plus the howling from constituents during the break.

If this was really in the bag, then why the rush to pass “something” before year end. What’s coming down the pike (excl. 11/2010) that makes them want to rush this so fast? My money is on increasingly poor economic news. The “Obama needs to shuffle his priorities” meme is already started to take hold and will only get stronger if UE keeps headed northward. There’s a reason that Obama keeps saying that UE could top 11% before things turn around – he knows what’s coming and he’s trying to slide this beast under the door before it slams shut.

Actually, that’s their number one lie – they would like people to think that they have more than a passing interest in ‘Liberty’.

But just look at what they want to do to this country, they want to throw you in jail for not buying health insurance,

They want to tell you what you can and cannot say, and whether you can defend yourself, does that sound like Liberty?

It’s an insult to them because like all of their self-labeling, it eventually becomes attached to failure and they have to “move-on” so to speak.

All this should tell you something about their ideology.

Juno77 on November 10, 2009 at 6:05 PM

Unfortuantely AP is right. If the Dems are smart, they would pas anything that creates an entitlement. Has any entitlement been overturned? I can only think of HI and the massive revamping of TennCare (correct me if I am wrong on the later).

WashJeff on November 10, 2009 at 5:36 PM

While there’s definitely something to this, the two major entitlement programs, SS and Medicare/Medicaid, actually did address real problems (not in the right way, in my opinion, but they did), i.e. people who were near retirement age were afraid to retire because they didn’t have retirement assets saved and FDR needed them to retire to clear out spots in the workforce and people who were over 65 couldn’t get health insurance in the private market. Also, those entitlements only kicked in, at first, right near when a person was at about the average life expectancy, so they weren’t something people had to deal with from cradle to grave.

However, this entitlement would basically cover a person’s whole life and, for most people, would be a step down from what they have now. It’s really not an “entitlement” (although in some respect it is), it’s a redistribution of health care access from those who have it now to everyone. The 80% of people who are currently satisfied with their health care access are not going to like it. Even liberals are going to piss and moan about wait times.

All that, even if true, doesn’t mean it will be overturned, I just think it’s very risky for the Left to take the Krugman view that people will just grin and bear it. Unlike other entitlements, the government will actually have to deliver something with accountability on this one and people won’t forget what they had under the current system (again, 80% satisfaction ratings) so soon.

I’ve used the analogy of SkyNet from the “Terminator” movies as what I think will happen if it passes. The minute it does, the entire system is going to get all f-ed up and people are going to be pissed. This stuff is way too complex for those idiots in Congress to have the slightest clue how to improve it. Even they know it, as evidenced by the fact they won’t subject themselves to their own laws.

venividivici on November 10, 2009 at 6:05 PM

Wasn’t he bagging his tea with Monica?

bloggless on November 10, 2009 at 6:05 PM

The ratchet on federal entitlements only turns one way, i.e. towards expansion, and it’s a lot easier to make the ratchet turn when Congress’s every move isn’t under the media microscope the way it is now.

That’s a flawed assumption, and it will fail, it’s just a question of when not if.

DFCtomm on November 10, 2009 at 6:05 PM

Winning? Be careful what you ask for. Krauthammer made the point that if this does pass it will be a millstone. From the junk I hear… it will raise costs, cause more unemployment, and cut medicare. They really ought to start over.

And that’s just for starters – you want to get the disapprovals above 60%? Begin a massive media blitz using the actual language from the Pelosi bill and inform the public what they’re new “reformed” health premiums will cost. If done right, the Dems will wish that it was polling in the 60′s as they run away from it faster than a scalded dog. There’s a way (several really) to kill this pig, it’s just a question of whether the oppos are prepared to be as ruthless in killing it as the Dems are in trying to pass it.
