CBS, ABC on Obama Af-Pak decision: Never mind

posted at 8:48 am on November 10, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Yesterday, CBS reported that Barack Obama had decided to send 40,000 more troops to Afghanistan, adopting Gen. Stanley McChrystal’s Plan B.  Earlier, McClatchy reported that Obama had decided on sending 34,000 troops, splitting the difference between Plans B and C.  Now CBS and Bloomberg both report that Obama hasn’t made any decision yet, while ABC says that Obama has expanded his options to Plans A, B, C, D, and E:

Senior administration officials tell ABC News that President Obama at his war council meeting tomorrow will assess five different specific strategies for Afghanistan and Pakistan, the recommendations put forward by Gen. Stanley McChrystal being one of those five strategies.

At his meeting with the Joint Chiefs of Staff on Friday, October 30, President Obama asked Pentagon officials to assess in detail the four other strategy options — missions, troop requirements, cost. All five options increase the levels of US troops in Afghanistan. The president has not yet been presented with those four new assessments.

All five options will be discussed in detail when the Joint Chiefs and other senior officials meet with the President tomorrow.

As for those reports on Obama having already decided …

President Barack Obama’s national security adviser dismissed reports that the administration has reached a decision to send thousands of additional troops to Afghanistan.

Obama hasn’t received final options that he has requested, neither has he reviewed those alternatives with his national security team, said National Security Adviser James Jones, responding to reports by the Associated Press and CBS News. The AP reported Obama would add “tens of thousands more forces,” while CBS said he plans to send four combat brigades plus thousands more support troops.

“Reports that President Obama has made a decision about Afghanistan are absolutely false,” Jones said in a e-mailed statement today. “Any reports to the contrary are completely untrue and come from uninformed sources.”

The earlier reports came from White House sources.  Either the Obama administration wanted to float some trial balloons that could later be disavowed, or someone in the West Wing is unhappy about the options Obama is considering.  I’d lean heavily towards the first option, which could easily be tested: CBS and McClatchy can make their sources public.  After all, this administration is calling them and their sources liars, essentially, so what do they owe their sources anyway?

Why is the Obama administration floating these trial balloons three months after McChrystal reported back on the necessary resourcing for the Af-Pak theater and the counterinsurgency strategy Obama himself championed for the last three years?  He’s the Commander in Chief, and this is not a political campaign.  Before now, Obama used the elections in Afghanistan as an excuse for his dithering, which this has very obviously become.  That excuse expired two weeks ago, and now we’re getting a flurry of trial balloons rather than leadership and a decision.

It’s time to make a decision, Mr. President, one which you’ve had three months to make.  If Obama is just now getting around to hearing back on five options, then he either needs to fire his staff for their lack of preparation or admit that this has been a low priority for him while Americans fight and die on the front lines.  One does not win wars by waiting three months to decide on whether to properly resource the only real option for victory.

Perhaps this president has been waiting to hear what Code Pink wants him to do. It wouldn’t surprise me at all.

scalleywag on November 10, 2009 at 8:57 AM

Hey Obama, I realize it may be a tough to decide which tie to wear in the morning, but this is a little more important. This is your decision, you chose to become the leader of the United States. Show some backbone and do something. You will be criticized either way. Great, even mediocre, leaders realize that. Quit playing games and put forth a plan that our troops can work with. Flip a coin, use one of those little magic eight balls, or better yet, listen to the General you put in charge of Afghanistan and use his plan.

Obama has decided to end the rift between the west and Islam once and for all by mandatory conversion of the entire US to Islam. A White House spokesperson said ACORN will be converted first and sent out heavily armed to force the conversions.

Why are folks upset about the delay? It’s clear what is happening before us, social programs are the priority. There is no concern with social programs costs since the funding will come from the military after they become law. Obama will claim we can’t afford the war and bail. He said as much about the Iraq theater on the campaign trail. I recall Obama saying the Iraq expenses could be used for healthcare, daily costs, etc. Just watch, it’s going to happen.

This marks the conclusion of a careful policy review that I ordered as soon as I took office. My Administration has heard from our military commanders and diplomats. We have consulted with the Afghan and Pakistani governments; with our partners and NATO allies; and with other donors and international organizations. And we have also worked closely with members of Congress here at home.”

He can’t NOT send troops to Afghanistan because it is politically unacceptable in DC and he will dither and dather till 2012 if it means that he would not send any troops to Afghanistan. His end goal is US withdrawal from the Good War.He does not care if withdrawing would imply a Taliban takeover of Afghanistan or if girls in Afghanistan get acid sprayed on their faces for the temerity of going to school. In his delusional mind, the Taliban are not evil. Only the US is evil and imperialistic and guilty. Only the Western world is sinful. I feel sorry for those who volunteered to go to Afghanistan but the CinC is not serving them but is serving himself. I will be happy to be wrong but sadly,I don’t think the ditherer-in-chief will ever prove me wrong.

I agree with the commenters here, that Obama is putting off the decision for political reasons.

But I also think there’s another component: he’s just not capable of making the hard decisions. He’s a law professor turned junior senator. The law professor in him needs 100% of the information about an issue before he can make a decision.

Colin Powell (not one of my favorites, but he’s had some good things to say about leadership) would tell him that a leader makes a decision once they know 40 to 70% of what they need to know–and then they go with their gut. Unfortunately, the junior senator in him doesn’t have the “gut” he needs to make the tough decisions.

Obama needs to apologize to his troops and their families for being such an ineffective POS.

During the Armada crisis, many an Englishman was brought into national service to protect the crown. These men were at sea ready to combat the Spanish invasion and fight ship to ship. When the national crisis was aided by bad weather and poor Spanish seamanship, the new crisis was how to honor the promises given to all of these men that came to the aid of the crown?

The solution was simple. The men were kept at sea and many died from lack of nourishment and fresh water. Those that had signed on to keep England free became victims of keeping the crown from debt. In a parallel gesture, the crown of B.O. and his royals not seeing any threat to their wealth or security sees no reason to take seriously the safety, well being or assistance to Afghanistan or the Americans stationed there. Our allies are smart enough to pull the plug and run. The enemy, unlike the Spaniards, are in perfect position to take the funds being funneled to them (some probably by Obama supporters) and take the fight to kill Americans.

England did not elect Queen Elizabeth, but Americans elected the current king and his court.

The Community Organizer in Obama is getting the DoD and State Dept. (+ Biden) in a room to discuss, negotiate and organize. Then come back later and discuss, negotiate and organize some more. All the while hoping that events transpire to change the problem so that Obama can get the group together to discuss, negotiate and organize some more.

Obama is about the “discuss, negotiate and organize” part, not the set a goal, find a solution and implement part.

albill on November 10, 2009 at 10:00 AM

The explanation of why he won’t commit troops is very simple. Obama is hoping with all his might that Afghanistan implodes while he “debates” thus allowing him to withdraw from the theater with no political consequences.

Daveyardbird on November 10, 2009 at 10:07 AM

He cannot make a decision on Afghanistan because he is led by his advisors (General McCrystal, Michelle, and Valerie) who aren’t congruent. He is 100% political animal, so he doesn’t actually know what to do since the teleprompter hasn’t been programmed to tell him what to say yet.

No capability to “change” or to even grow up, completely and totally failing at the on the job training he was counting on. He has never had anyone tell him no, a perfect storm of massive incompetence, radical puppet masters (Soros, et. al) feeding him his positions and a facade of giving a good speech and image projection by the MSM.
I would have a modicum of respect for the guy if he would actually man up and govern as a liberal president, but he can’t even do that. He has to waffle on every point and rely on others to guide him in how he should respond. My guess is that he doesn’t crap unless Rahm tells him to, remembering the time he did it on the oval office rug and got smacked in the nose with a rolled up newspaper.
I am looking forward to a grown up returning to the office of president.

Obama really is a man-child. Even if you don’t have children you can relate to who he is because you were a child once.

Everything he says is based on childish statements:

1. “Me! Me! Me!” – He wants something newer and better and nothing is good enough.
2. “He did it!” – He will not take responsibility for anything that he does even if he did it.
3. “It’s not fair!” – He feels that he can make the best decisions for what is right and what is wrong.

Instead of picking an option (I know, decisions aren’t Dumbo’s strong point) and pissing off half of America, he’s being a pu$$y and pissing off ALL of America.

Maybe he should just consult his Magic 8-ball and just get it over with already.

I still can’t believe that Obama was elected to the office of President.

However, Steven Crowder’s latest video- asking people if they know who the Vice President is- explains an awful lot.
