Surprise: Obama addresses Berlin on the fall of the Wall

posted at 5:43 pm on November 9, 2009 by Allahpundit

I’m giving you two versions, the unedited BBC transmission and the censored version that ran on Russian state television (which omits the passage about the Declaration of Independence but not, curiously, the one about the Iron Curtain), thus proving that the old Soviet spirit is alive and kicking. Even in a two-and-a-half minute speech about an event as epochal as the fall of the Wall, somehow he finds a way to make it about him:

“Few would have foreseen … that a united Germany would be led by a woman from Brandenburg or that their American ally would be led by a man of African descent. But human destiny is what human beings make of it,” Obama said.

Skip ahead to 4:30 or so of the Russia Today clip to watch Hillary introduce him as “someone who represents the fall of different kinds of walls.” Even here, history is a handmaiden to The One’s grandeur.

Fox News speculated earlier that Obama might have decided against attending in order to avoid annoying his new partners in peace in Moscow. Think they’re wrong? Watch the BBC clip and count the number of times The One names either “Russia” or the “Soviet Union” as the party responsible for the Wall. The closest he gets is the reference to the Iron Curtain; aside from that, all we really learn here is that there was some vague tyrant that used to oppress eastern Europe but has since receded into the mists of history. Ask the Poles and Czechs how they feel about that “recession” in the wake of our new missile defense arrangement.

Be sure to count the number of references to Reagan and Thatcher too.

Ironic that 20 years ago today, the Wall fell – the wall that symbolized a government that put people into jail or killing them for not doing what government demanded.

But yesterday, the House voted for legislation that will put people in jail for not doing what government demands.

The guy’s ego is writing checks his butt cant cash. Then again it wouldn’t be an Obama speech if he couldn’t make it about himself in some way and their are some that are suggesting that this is the reason why he didn’t attend the event in Berlin, because he would be unable to make it all about him and he would have probably been forced to acknowledge the man who was chiefly responsible for causing the collapse and break up of the USSR – President Ronald Reagan.

Twenty Years Ago
Posted by Lew Rockwell on November 9, 2009 09:20 AM

Tom, how well I remember the faces of George H.W. Bush and James Baker as the Berlin wall came down. They were stunned and horrified, their faces drained of blood. No more big, bad Reds to justify the big, bad regime in the US. It would take our rulers some time before they could come up with another foreign enemy under our beds.

NB: Communism was used to justify the most bloodthirsty regimes in history. But as economic basket cases, they never threatened the US, and indeed tended to be far less imperialistic than the US and Britain, which—as Hans Hoppe points out—have the capitalistic resources to wage war and rule the globe, at least for a time.

Now we are supposed to think that a few hundred foreign “terrorists” (private groups using the state’s war tactics, who were originally trained and funded by the US and its satellites to fight the Russians in Afghanistan) threaten Wichita, and justify a fascist regime in DC. Just like the Cold War that Truman started.

Reagan’s “Tear Down This Wall” speech

That gives me an idea:

Tear Down This Wall speech, Obama version

We welcome change — and hope! — for we believe that flexibility and security go together, though the advance of human liberty can only be made within a country’s own time, on their own terms. Maybe Europe is ready for openness, but not togetherness, for reform but not reformation, for change but not for capitalism. Just as we know when to accept change at home, we know when change abroad can be dangerous, its goals subsuming a reality that we all know: That the Soviets aren’t going anywhere, that there are two superpowers, that a new world order is not coming. But there is one sign the Soviets can make that would be unmistakable, that would advance dramatically the cause of peace. General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization, come and meet me in America, and appear with me in a photo op. See the nation your forefathers demonized as one that oppressed my forefathers, now ready to make its way to the 21st Century. Mr. Gorbachev, open the White House gate. Mr. Gorbachev, have beer with me!
