Michael Steele: Some white Republicans are scared of me
posted at 4:40 pm on November 9, 2009 by Allahpundit
Actually, he never says “some.” I’m adding that to give him the benefit of the doubt. Raw Story’s transcript of the exchange:
STEELE: Education and the economy. Education and jobs. Education and small business.
MARTIN: But your candidates got to talk to them. One of the criticisms I’ve always had is Republicans — white Republicans — have been scared of black folks.
STEELE: You’re absolutely right. I mean I’ve been in the room and they’ve been scared of me. I’m like, “I’m on your side” and so I can imagine going out there and talking to someone like you, you know, [you're like,] “I’ll listen.” And they’re like “Well.” Let me tell you. You saw in Christie and you saw in McDonnell a door open because they went in and engaged. McDonnell was very deliberate about spending –
Even better: The guy he said this to is noted Obama apologist Roland Martin. I get what Steele’s trying to do here, conceding Martin’s point to establish common ground so that he’s in a stronger position to persuade him (and his audience), but this isn’t the first time he’s laughed off a nasty racial smear about Republicans uttered in his presence. If he wants to do the common-ground thing, he could at least qualify his agreement by saying that it’s true of a few party members but isn’t true of most; if, in his experience, it is true of most, then he should make that fact loudly known so that conservatives who don’t want to be part of a racist party can walk away for good.
Exit question: Does Steele understand how sensitive most righties are about being demagogued by the left with false, politically calculated charges of racism? The answer must be no or else he’d never let something like this go unchallenged. Click the image to watch.

No, but I will! I let you all know. ;)
Whatchu talkin bout Willis?
The stoking of Discord didn’t start with Obama. He’s just the fruit of it. As for Steele, he’s feeling it, but he’s not savvy enough to finesse it. That’s what’s needed in his position, on this subject and a dozen others.

This is probably just Steele trying to please the audience that’s in front of him.
He does this crap all the time, and it makes him sound both stupid and unprincipled.
This probably would have been a much bigger gaffe 3 months ago, before the left overused the race card to the point of near worthlessness, but it still stings to see the guy who’s in charge of the Republican Party call them a bunch of racists.

in fact if the GOP were smart they would run black candidates in all black democratic strongholds. Look at Alanta and the NYC mayor races or Obama. the black population votes for the black canidate to the tune of 90:1 if not higher. that is racism. If whites who are 70% of the population voted the same way in all elections there would never be a national, senate, or congressional seat won by a black, asian, or lation person. And yet for some reason white are considered the racists. go figure

The GOP is running several black candidates in local or state races. But it has to start where the Dems started 45 years ago. That doesn’t make blacks *naturally* racist, “unseen,” just well-indoctrinated.
If you’re going to come to conclusions, make sure you know the history.
baldilocks on November 9, 2009 at 6:13 PM

This.
The GOP will have to build a foundation with the black community on a local level before it can be successful at a national level.
The Dems haven’t helped poor black communities one bit over the past 40 years. They’ve just used handouts to keep them at a slightly higher level of poverty. Communicating that message, along with offering an alternative, has to start somewhere.

I believe Michael Steele is a phony conservative that has been brought in “AL TAKIYAH” style by Repuplican elite with a hidden agenda of moving the Republican Party center-left.

This is why I give Steele a bit of a pass on this one, though overall I don’t feel too good about his performance.
We/he needs to start running candidates in these districts. We are going to get beat, but we need to present the alternative viewpoint everywhere to make long term progress and also to help upticket races. I don’t really think it is as much fear that keeps this from happening like it should, it is more the practicality of dumping funds into losing battles for a marginal long term gain. Strategically, I think there is more benefit than most do but maybe that is because I am in a deep blue district.
I think it was teed up as Martin saying Republicans don’t often make a real attempt to win these votes, and that is pretty much true. I think that is where Steele was going in agreeing though he went way too far in doing so.
stldave on November 9, 2009 at 6:26 PM
He confuses fearing his idiocy with “fearing” him simply because he is Black.
I avoid using any barrio or ghetto talk on official business emails. His “What up” sounds as stupid and uneducated as The Won’s “shout out”.

Cybergeezer on November 9, 2009 at 6:30 PM
He needs to go. And the only way this isn’t used as a battering ram against the republican party is if prominent black conservatives call him out and tell him to step down. He just does not have the ability to communicate the conservative message in a coherent, intelligent manner. And as far as it being some kind of amateurish “ploy” to find common ground, I think it is worse then that. I think he is personally trying to gain “cred” with these people. That he is trying to prove his own blackness and if that’s the case, that reveals a less then concrete belief in conservative values. If he is truly rock solid conservative, then he doesn’t need to be acknowledged for the color of his skin.
peacenprosperity on November 9, 2009 at 6:31 PM
Not so much a token as a realization of electoral demographics. If today’s demographics were in place in 1980, even Reagan would have had a close call unless he reached out to black, latin and asian voters.
Right now the GOP is losing 95% of black voters and losing Hispanics by a 2-1 margin.

I’m so angry with Steele. With friends like this, who needs enemies? I really don’t want him speaking for me or about me. He’s obviously out of touch with who we are. I don’t care if he’s purple but I do care that he immediately jumped to the other side and says, “Oh, you’re right.” He totally buys into the racist idea and with that, he will do us more damage than good. He is ineffectual and I wish he could be replaced. We need someone like Michelle Malkin. Yeah, I like that idea a ton.

Steele’s got a point, amazingly, and not just about white Republicans…all he has to do is say “raaaaycist!!!”, call up the right ‘black advocacy organizations’ (AKA ‘perpetually whining Democrat tools’) and a career can be utterly destroyed in months. Not to mention the attacks on the target and the family of same, which might well continue for the rest of their lives.

Buddahpundit on November 9, 2009 at 6:48 PM
The biggest problem the GOP has is getting their message out to others, outside of the base. Dems have claimed ownership of the black vote because the GOP’s message is never heard. At least not for long. Trust me, people share some common problems, but if you don’t engage them you loose.
Yes the issue is there, it is not all about race, it is about trust. On both sides.
The lesson is pounded over and over by the libs – race, gender and class the GOP is bad.
If you want to sell beer, burgers, cars or politics to black people take it to them. Knock down the wall get up close, personal and handle your business. Or else the Dems will continue to drown out the truth. Daley has done that for years in Chicago. Plenty of face time. GOP? well, not so much.
Over the years I’ve read some really great comments on Hotair, but here in the South Burbs of Chicago your wisdom is seldom if ever heard.
We are not all lower income, single family home, etc. Fact is we do pretty well.
But if you want it you better come and get. Any effort at this point will be an improvement.
So if Mike is trying with very little help to engage both sides that’s a good thing.
Theory is nice, practice is better. If Mike ain’t up to your standards. Do it yourself.
Because if you continue to allow libtards to define you in the media, school, entertainment etc. you lose.

Steele too often falls into the trap of responding to how the question is framed. He needs to predetermine his message by preparing for the type of question that the interviewer is likely to ask.
If his venue is one that reaches black audiences such as this program, he must focus on the pluses of his party’s message. If education or jobs or the economy is the point he wants to make, he must articulate why and how the Republican party offers the most opportunity for success and self-determination.
The video is not as bad as the transcript suggests, but Steele must present his points as if he has a positive message and stop being so defensive.

Walk away from racism? Our party was formed in 1854 to stop the oppression and racism of slavery. Our party was formed to free people and we have been doing it for over 150 years all over the world from Virginia to Baghdad! Many republicans have died for this cause! We must continue to fight the racist and divisive identity politics of the leftists that have always found a home in the democratic party. We don’t walk away from bigots, we defeat them! Republicans can agree and disagree with each other based upon theories, thoughts, and ideas and not based upon DNA, that’s what makes our party special! If Mr Steele really does feel ignorant bigotry drives opinion within the republican party he should loudly point it out to the rest of us with facts and evidence so that we can rally to condemn it and drive it out of our freedom loving party. If he can’t do that he should be able to articulate why he senses a fear of him as a person within the republican party so that we can correct any misunderstandings that might exist over what motivates other republicans. But make no mistake about it, republicans will continue to maintain our long history of fighting racism and bigotry wherever we find it.

I see that you’re well-indoctrinated also. I don’t do PC but it’s interesting that you assume that I would. Why is that?
Precivil war whites were indoctrinated into 20th century socialism and marxism? I think you’ve got your timelines wrong.
This statement is meaningless.
A true statement; however, do you know for a fact that when such occurs that it is always for that “simple reason?” Of course you don’t. For those who don’t state such explicitly, you’re just assuming.
Again, you’re assuming that you know the reason that every one of that 98% did so.
Question: why did 89% of black voters vote for John Kerry in the 2004 presidential election? Kerry isn’t black.
baldilocks on November 9, 2009 at 8:53 PM
If McCain had had the same racial demographic Reagan had, he’d have won convincingly. The percent of black voters increased by about 10% from 1980 to 2008. The Hispanic percent increased by 3x and the Asian vote at least tripled. McCain lost the combined Hispanic and Asian vote by better than 2-1.
dedalus on November 9, 2009 at 8:55 PM
I am always nervous around a group of black men…I play a lot of tennis, and many are black and it is nervous time.
One small innocent remark and you get the “look”.
Anyone else I can joke around and say, “When I am done with you, you will be my ball boy”…but can’t say that around the black players.
Any number of sarcastic trash talk, and it gets mis construed…”I didn’t know you had that shot”, gets interpreted as meaning I didn’t know a black man had that shot.
Not all are sensitive, but enough so you are always walking on eggs, making sure you don’t say the hundreds of words that many blacks have deemed offensive.
Hispanics aren’t like that, Asians for sure aren’t like that, only one group takes offense at innocent remarks…they should find another hobby…

I get the “black pride” thing…I saw it with Catholics when Kennedy ran, he had the Catholic vote, just like Romney had the Mormon vote and you can bet Lieberman has the Jewish vote.
That is their right and their decision, probably a better reason then many others.
I don’t get why so many think that is racism…it has been that way since the beginning of time.

It’s “soft” racism. I’m asian. And in New York there was an asian candidate. And yes, I was a temptation to vote for an asian, but I didn’t. The guy was a democrat. I love this country and I’m also trying to save it.

A Keith Olbermann sound byte in the making. Now do you understand? Steele doesn’t correct Martin — he leaves Martin’s understated but obvious premise untouched — that all White Elephants are afraid of blacks, and therefore the Republican Party is comprised entirely of racists.
Had Steele corrected Martin in the next sentence, we’d have a different story. But he goes with the flow. Again, stupid — very stupid.
Now, if Steele had expanded that to include white Democrats (whom I suspect are statistically even more afraid of black folks than white Republicans), I’d say fine — go there. But he lets the Olbermann sound bite whip right past, and then adds to it!
If Steele thinks we are all racists, then why is he spending any time leading us? That can’t be what he thinks, but there it is, in his words. Stupid.
