Michael Steele: Some white Republicans are scared of me
posted at 4:40 pm on November 9, 2009 by Allahpundit
Actually, he never says “some.” I’m adding that to give him the benefit of the doubt. Raw Story’s transcript of the exchange:
STEELE: Education and the economy. Education and jobs. Education and small business.
MARTIN: But your candidates got to talk to them. One of the criticisms I’ve always had is Republicans — white Republicans — have been scared of black folks.
STEELE: You’re absolutely right. I mean I’ve been in the room and they’ve been scared of me. I’m like, “I’m on your side” and so I can imagine going out there and talking to someone like you, you know, [you're like,] “I’ll listen.” And they’re like “Well.” Let me tell you. You saw in Christie and you saw in McDonnell a door open because they went in and engaged. McDonnell was very deliberate about spending –
Even better: The guy he said this to is noted Obama apologist Roland Martin. I get what Steele’s trying to do here, conceding Martin’s point to establish common ground so that he’s in a stronger position to persuade him (and his audience), but this isn’t the first time he’s laughed off a nasty racial smear about Republicans uttered in his presence. If he wants to do the common-ground thing, he could at least qualify his agreement by saying that it’s true of a few party members but isn’t true of most; if, in his experience, it is true of most, then he should make that fact loudly known so that conservatives who don’t want to be part of a racist party can walk away for good.
Exit question: Does Steele understand how sensitive most righties are about being demagogued by the left with false, politically calculated charges of racism? The answer must be no or else he’d never let something like this go unchallenged. Click the image to watch.

Ugh! When is Steele gonna get some balls and actually deliver?
Republicans should be WINNING with all the grist for the mill out there. Instead they are such bad jokes!
Thank goodness for the TRUE conservatives.

Oh, for sure my arguments with liberals are FAR more fun and heated. Never thought about joining Log Cabin tho, as I don’t want to be seen as a “gay Republican”…just a “Republican”. The gay part is just there.

Steele’s problem is that he thinks himself as a Black Republican. He should start seeing himself as a Republican. IMO, anyone seeing themselves as [Fill-race-here]-American is already a racist themselves.

If righties would exclude from their numbers the persons about whom charges of racism are true, then the false attacks would abate, or at least fall flat among moderates and independents.

I have come to the conclusion that the majority of dems (dimbulbs), and the republicans in Washington are schizophrenic..on drugs or all of the above. I say give them ALL random drug tests and psychological evaluations at least once a year.. at least..

At this rate, Steele will be the first black Republican President; He’s just as un-qualified as Barakie boy.
Cybergeezer on November 9, 2009 at 5:16 PM
Michael Steele could be so helpful if he would leave the famous Blacks alone and go into the Black community and preach the Republican credo. Individual responsibility. Set goals. Stay in school. Study hard and make something of yourself. Most Black teenagers think that they will make it big on American Idol or get football or baseball scholarships. They don’t have confidence in their abilities because they do not see education through until they meet their goals. Way too many come from single parent households that do not hold education in high esteem. Life is a grind when you depend on others to get you through. Read “others” as the government.
He needs to tell them how he succeeded and how his whole family succeeded. Being a rapper is the “easy” way out and that’s what most of them aspire to. They do not know how to achieve a goal for thememselves, the individual. They sure do not teach this in schools.
When you take the label of Republican or Democrat off the table and start talking principles then almost all people agree that what we call Republican principles and values are preferable.
BetseyRoss on November 9, 2009 at 5:16 PM
Michael, Michael, Michael.
They are not afraid of you because you are a scary black man. You are not a scary black man. That is a stupid stereotype anyway. And it is obvious you are a nice guy. No one is afraid of you.
That is part of the problem.
Conservatives would feel better if the left feared you. Not for being a scary black man, but for being a committed Republican and conservative who was moving the party forward and putting the liberal adgenda in jeopardy. Rahm Emanuel is a little yap dog of a man, harmless physically, but people fear him because he is a scary infighter.

It’s not only ludicrous conservatives are being called ‘racists’ by the libs & W.H. – but, to have a leading party member insinuate the same is maddening. If he truly feels that way I would strongly suggest he find another line of work, because he sure hasn’t pulled the conservatives and rinos together. We’re further apart than before his chairmanship.

What does the Chair of the RNC have to say about Republicans to leave?
Republicans are fascists. You’re absolutely right.
Republicans are trailer trash. You’re absolutely right.
Republicans are greedy. You’re absolutely right.
Republicans are heartless. You’re absolutely right.
Republicans are stupid. You’re absolutely right.
What liberal stereotype about all Republicans would the RNC Chair have to agree to that would end his Career as RNC Chair?

If Steele faces nothing but racism as a result of his position, he’s either very brave or very stupid to stay in the position.
By my lights, he’s facing far less racism than any of his Democratic brothers. After all, it isn’t his side that’s assuring that 30% of all blacks never are born…
unclesmrgol on November 9, 2009 at 5:19 PM
It’s not just Mr. Steele, most Republicans in the spotlight feel compelled to agree with the interviewer and/or chastise the base. Eric Cantor did it last week. I am begging them to stop falling for it. It makes them look as squishy.

What a missed opportunity. He could have addressed the racism within the Democrat party, he could have talked about the proud beginnings of the Republican party and their fight to end slavery, the many first black Republicans elected after the civil war, he could have said a lot of things but instead this brilliant high paid representative of the GOP agreed with the opposition about a lie and had a little laugh at our expense.

Cybergeezer on November 9, 2009 at 5:27 PM
There’s a huge disconnect that takes place within every discussion of race and Republicans. In much the same way that lots of us want to hear good Muslims speak out, decry and rally against every instance of terrorism, minorities seem to be waiting for the same vigilance against racism by Republicans.
In each case, the lack of clear and determined resistance to terrorism and racism gives the mistaken impression that the silent group condones such evils. When Muslims do not raise the roof against terrorism it is as if they stand in support thereof. An equal dynamic occurs regarding racism and Republicans. This inverse relation puts Muslims and Republicans at a respective disadvantage when discussing these issues.
Steele is a talented communicator. His give and take are good. In this case he should have not have conceded the error. It would have been more instructive to acknowledge frustrations on both sides of the aisle.
Though, Roland Martin is a special kind of dunce. I do not think any level of cerebral-jitsu could best such demagoguery.
***
For the record, terrorism exponentially trumps racism on my evil-meter. Terrorism is a tactic employed by bigots everywhere. But they are not equal. I’m not even sure that I would classify racial-bigotry as evil.
Whatever.

Steele has a tactic of conceding points to win common ground, especially within the black community. Like (I’m paraphrasing), “yeah that Rush Limbaugh is just an entertainer and a goofball, but I’m the head of the Republican Party.” Steele should give up that tactic. It gets him in real trouble. I think he’s trying so hard to avoid being called an Uncle Tom that he goes out of his way to denigrate others.

I, for one, am scared sh*tless of Mr. Steele. I’m afraid that his fetish for political correctness and foot-in-mouth disease will cause the GOP to squander a huge opportunity to move conservatism back to its rightful place in our national politics. Saturday the GOP to surrendered a huge strategic victory over Pelosicare by thumping their chests and voting for the Stupak Amendment. Morons. We’ve got morons on our team. They gave the Blue Balls Democrats cover to vote for Pelosicare instead of forcing them to make a tough choice by voting for the bill with abortion funding in it. And to think that Boehner’s office took a call from some dickhead Catholic cardinal who warned him not to play politics with abortion? While the Catholic church is lining up behind Pelosicare!? I’m a Catholic and I wrote them and told them to shove off themselves.
Gawd, how will we ever stop this insanity if we keep playing beanbag while the other side is playing smashmouth? Don’t look for Steele to figure this out in time for 2010. If we get it done it will be IN SPITE of the GOP.

There is no membership list for being on the right, so this is a bit hard. As for Steele, he’s had his share of Oreos thrown at him, so he’s gotten it from both sides; but to affirm a blanket statement like Martin’s is the height of stupidity.
We do have to be diligent in calling out the racists in our midst, such as this:
Since Steele’s vocation is law, and not ownership of a food company, the above is obviously appealing to a racial stereotype.
As for racism, we’ve all seen it for all sides. My favorite is my ultra-liberal neighbor two doors down; she generous to a fault, but does have a blind side. She told us when we were her guests at dinner one time, “I waited a long time to rent to a black. For a long time. I got a lot of whites applying, but I waited.” This person would have a cow if I called her racist for enforcing such an landlording acceptance test. I suspect, most liberals would find nothing wrong with what she did. I and my wife did held our peace until we got home; I guess my neighbor thought we were understanding co-liberals because we are a mixed-race couple.
unclesmrgol on November 9, 2009 at 5:36 PM

This silliness ought to cure those idiots that insist on playing the game of political correctness. Steele was put up there because Obama got elected and the GOP needed a quota candidate who could actually ask Obama why he wore black shoes without being labelled a racist.
Declare war on PC -call it what it is a weapon to stop truth from being heard – fire Steele, his conservative priciples and love of america are apparently less of a priority than his skin color -or he’s just incompetent.
Take on the black issue head on. The mantra is: the left is aborting them more than whites -keeping them forever victims in order to control them on the left’s plantation of the soul. Build the families again, get those trouble making boys some dads and discipline to avoid jail and drugs.
