Huckabee: Palin’s getting more media buzz than me because she’s attractive
posted at 7:00 pm on November 9, 2009 by Allahpundit
I’m a little surprised Sarahcuda hasn’t gone after him for this. Too early, maybe?
Palin is the party’s rock star.
“Some of the people who had excoriated me and really been very dismissive of me for views that I had taken, and labeled me anything from a populist to an ignoramus — the same people have been very defensive [of] and laudatory to Sarah Palin,” Huckabee noted, adding that he’d invited her to appear on his weekly Fox show but “could never get any contact.”
“I’m glad she’s getting the props — I know I’m not nearly as attractive,” he said with a guileless grin.
If pressed on this, no doubt he’ll go into “aw shucks” mode and insist he was merely paying her a compliment, but this isn’t the first time he’s attributed Palin’s appeal to her looks. Remember this from last November?
Neither was he quite so unperturbed by the Palin pick: “I was scratching my head, saying, ‘Hey, wait a minute. She’s wonderful, but the only difference was she looks better in stilettos than I do, and she has better hair.’ It wasn’t so much a gender issue, but it was like they suddenly decided that everything they disliked about me was O.K. . . . She was given a pass by some of the very people who said I wasn’t prepared.”
He polls well with women and she polls badly, so from the standpoint of pure cynical self-interest, she could score an easy point on a potential rival by challenging his rhetoric as sexist here. Why doesn’t she? Is it because she doesn’t want to call attention to the fact that she and Huck are pretty similar, actually? Or is she thinking strategically, that if she runs and he doesn’t she’ll need his endorsement down the line? Her book tour does include a stop in Iowa…
Don’t laugh at the idea that Huck might not run, either. Does this sound like a guy who’s trying to make friends ahead of 2012?
But some attitudes don’t change. Huckabee met in the spring with Pat Toomey, then the president of the Wall Street-backed Club for Growth, which had attacked him during the 2008 campaign for raising taxes in Arkansas.
“It wasn’t very productive,” he said of the meeting. “I realized then that these guys are just what I thought they were — they’re pay for play, and they do it anonymously on behalf of people who don’t want to be known as the funders of these hit operations. I find that repulsive.”
Given that fiscal conservatives are the people Huck will have to win over to beat Romney, TNR calls this knock on CfG “the functional equivalent of Mitt Romney trashing evangelicals.” Exit question: Is Huck running or not?

Lets all have fun watching Sarah’s Twitter followers explode. She linked the SarahPalinUSA account on her facebook and as of 6:54pm she had 4888 followers. In 8 minutes she’s already up to 5,089.
Fun times.

Not sure what you mean. You agree with him that the only reason Palin gets more media attention is because she’s an attractive woman? I give her a lot more credit than that, and I’m supposed to be some sort of rabid Palin-hater.

Yes, he’s running. The real question is will anyone care? He’s right in one sense. He and Palin are similar in many ways which has to be driving him nutz. His main appeal is with the social conservatives and she’ll easily take their votes from him. How can Huckster top Palin on abortion? She carried a Down Syndrome baby to term.

Huck will run. He is starting to throw jabs at possible opponents, as does Mitt. The only classy person so far is Sarah Palin, who doesn’t need to result to these tactics because A) she is as popular as ever. B) Iowans are willing to pay to get her to the state. C) she is just too classy.
Nothing against Huck. He has a pretty good show, but he is a moderate. Palin is and has govern as a conservative, she’s charismatic, and is very popular.
She’s a winner.

postaldog on November 9, 2009 at 7:18 PM
Palin can’t attack Huck because she needs as many viable candidates as possible as long as possible in this race.
The 2012 Republican Primary is going to come down to “Palin v. Anybody but Palin.” The more the “anybody but Palin” votes are dispersed amongst multiple candidates, the better she does.
If she’s got half a brain (and she may not), she’s not going to attack Huck. She needs Huck.
Proud Rino on November 9, 2009 at 7:18 PM
As you folks at HA know I have asserted that the main problem that Sarah Palin has is that a majority of Americans do not feel she is qualified to become POTUS, or in her terms she must LEGITIMIZE her credentials, worthiness and leadership ability for the highest office in the land.
Having said that has anyone noticed how organized Sarah has been in laying out her itinerary of her book tour and how ‘presidential’ she has acted since the resignation, appeared through her Facebook writings, and in terms of this thread not taken liberties to attack her perceived 2012 GOP primary opponents but to remain above the fray.
Fortunately for Palin supporters Sarah has 12-24 months to turn her negative perception around.

I thought you saw the contradiction.

Huck is far too much of a nanny-state type for my tastes. For that matter, T-Paw’s is included in the bunch. I personally have issues with any governor that decides what’s best for the entire state, such as state-wide smoking bans in private businesses, etc.
If I recall, Huck was also a big supporter of banning trans-fat due to the potential obesity issues.

I don’t mean to be obvious, but last year didn’t Palin tend to get a higher approval rating from men than women? I’m pretty sure if she looked like Dede Scozzafava, her male support would be, ahem, softer.
Palin is the target of a lot of irrational hatred, but she also benefits from a lot of idol-worshipping support. I think you’d have to be thick not to think Palin’s obvious attractiveness plays a role. Nothing wrong with Huck pointing that out.
Until Palin starts showing up on “Red Eye” as often as Huckabee, I’m giving him the benefit of doubt.

I think this is the GOP establishment’s worst fear and why Pawlenty is now in the bullpen (to relieve Romney if Mitt falters), why Gingrich supported Scozzafava and has emphasized his Beltway credentials, and why Huckabee may be going after its endorsement despite a general aversion by the elites, Beltway types, and RINO’s to ‘Jesus freaks’ and those tied too closely to southern yahoos.
