Feds dropped inquiry into Hasan’s contacts with jihadis because … he didn’t seem violent
posted at 8:27 pm on November 9, 2009 by Allahpundit
Intelligence agencies intercepted communications last year and earlier this year between Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, who is accused of shooting to death 13 people at Fort Hood, Tex., and a radical cleric in Yemen known for his incendiary anti-American teachings. But federal authorities dropped an inquiry into the matter after deciding the messages warranted no further action, government officials said on Monday.
Maj. Hasan’s exchanges with Anwar al-Awlaki, once a spiritual leader at a mosque in suburban Virginia where Maj. Hasan worshipped, indicate that the troubled military psychiatrist came to the attention of the authorities long before long before last Thursday’s shooting rampage at Fort Hood, but left him in his post. It is not clear what was said in the exchanges, believed to be e-mail messages, and whether they would have offered a hint at the major’s outspoken views or his declining emotional state…
But federal officials briefed on the case said their decision to break off the investigation was reasonable based on the information about Maj. Hasan that was compiled at the time, which they said gave no indication he was likely to engage in violence.
The officials said the communications do not alter the prevailing theory that Maj. Hasan acted by himself, lashing out as a result of combination of factors, including his outspoken opposition to American policy in Iraq and Afghanistan and his deepening religious fervor as a Muslim.
No word on what was in the e-mails. Cooking tips, maybe? Still, consider this progress. All it took for the jihad angle to be considered one possible factor in the shooting is this turd sending e-mails to Al Qaeda; maybe a video of him hanging out with Osama will surface and we can go ahead and nudge it towards “possible main factor.” As for Awlaki, I wrote about him this weekend but this bit from a U.S. counterterror official quoted in a WaPo story last year bears mentioning again: “There is good reason to believe Anwar Aulaqi has been involved in very serious terrorist activities since leaving the United States, including plotting attacks against America and our allies.” If Awlaki was considered a “very serious” terrorist threat as of 2008, how can any e-mail sent to him by Hasan have not been cause for great concern? Even if the e-mails weren’t explicitly violent or threatening, the other red flags in Hasan’s file should have set off alarm bells about where this might lead. It’d be like a U.S. military officer sending telegrams to the German command during WWII. Whatever his reason is, it’s a bad reason.
You’ll be pleased to know, incidentally, that Awlaki considers Hasan a hero whom other Muslims should emulate. As for the hero himself, he’s headed to trial in a military court. Ed thinks that’s good news, but given how far the army evidently went to avoid, ahem, “discriminating” against this guy, I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up with a life sentence instead of the death penalty.

Hasan will spend the rest of his (short) life in a cage, and then he will die.
The effects of his action will last tens or hundreds of years or longer.
If you are not cautious of your conversations, you’ll wake up one day to find yourself under investigation after being accused of making threats during a heated debate.
You don’t think so? Why are little old ladies and Catholic Nuns searched at the airport?

Leftwing P.C. crud.
There need to be no Muslims in the U.S. military, in any capacity (means, no Muslims in the U.S. military).
Their loyalty cannot be relied upon. I think the very premise of much of Islam suggests if not inspires behaviors that run contrary to reason.
Apply that to an unstable mind and you get a crazy man with guns shooting US military on a US military base crying “Allah Akhbar”.
Hasan was clearly unstable, and quite clearly had no place in the US military, as no other Muslims should, either.
Their very ideology is contrary to fidelity to the U.S., as long as the U.S. is NOT a Muslim nation.
And therein lies the trajectory, lest no one has yet noticed.

Handlers are quickly trying to corral Hasan as mentally “troubled” so as to get him out of the grips of the criminal court system of Texas. If he’s tried in criminal court (civilian court, in Texas), he’ll be liable for and almost certainly receive the death penalty and since it’s Texas, he’s nearly certain to be put to death soon after and he should be, from what I’ve read.

whbates on November 9, 2009 at 8:47 PM
I agree with you. As does reason itself.
If and when someone is involved in studying violent, murderous behaviors, that’s more than enough reason to conclude they have such on their minds.
Even moderately able law enforcement, as also other professionals, are keenly aware of that “but he was a good and quiet neighbor” thing when they discover the serial killer next door.
Psychopaths are exceptionally talented at behaving “normally” and inciting others to act out. That’s part of the mental illness, that ability. Others show up as possible help or even as witnesses, they all say, “but he was such a quiet, nice person, I can’t believe he’d do something like that.”
That’s what pscyhopaths do, that’s part of their illness, that manipulation of establishing social trust that is a cover for their actual intents, what’s on their minds.

Section 15.326: When to suspect a person might be a terrorist:
1. He foams at the mouth, makes blood-curdling screams in Arabic, and is wearing a strange vest covered in wires and C-4.
2. He’s on tape chanting “death to America,” provided the tape shows him in the presence of an Al Qaeda leader higher than No. 3 on the most-wanted list.
3. He previously hijacked a jet, flew it into a building, and lived.
4. He’s been caught routinely planting IED’s in his neighborhood, and at least two or more worked.
5. He has made comments expressing mild admiration of Rush Limbaugh, Sarah Palin, or Glenn Beck.
