Chavez: American deal with Colombia means war
posted at 12:55 pm on November 9, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
One might be tempted to dismiss Hugo Chavez’ latest saber rattling as meaningless, another crazy statement from a lunatic bent on destroying the wealth of his nation in order to play Mini-Me to the Castro Brothers. However, the move of troops to the Colombian border and the threats Chavez made this weekend of war do not reflect lunacy, but a bid to grab power and influence in Latin America at the expense of a weakened US. He wants the US out of Colombia, and Chavez apparently believes he has an American President he can bully towards that goal:
Venezuela’s President Hugo Chávez yesterday ordered the country’s military to prepare for a possible armed conflict with Colombia, saying soldiers should be ready if the United States attempts to provoke a war between the South American neighbours.
Mr Chávez said Venezuela could end up going to war with Colombia as tensions between them rise, and he warned that if a conflict broke out “it could extend throughout the whole continent”.
“The best way to avoid war is preparing for it,” Mr Chávez told military officers during his weekly television and radio programme. Venezuela’s socialist leader has also cited a recent deal between Bogota and Washington giving US troops greater access to military bases as a threat to regional stability.
The Government of Colombian President Álvaro Uribe Vélez rejected what it called “threats of war from Venezuela’s government”, saying that it would protest at Mr Chávez’s comments to the Organization of American States and the UN Security Council.
It took America’s enemies a couple of years to take Jimmy Carter’s measure during the Cold War. It has taken less than that for our enemies to take Barack Obama’s measure. The US has had a military alliance with Colombia for years while Chavez has been in power, under both Democratic and Republican Presidents. However, Chavez never made it a pretext for war until now, although he issued a similar threat last year without moving troops to the border.
Chavez hopes to bluff Obama out of Colombia and Latin America as a whole. He has backed Colombian rebels for years now, especially the Communist insurgency FARC, which made the mistake of keeping the evidence, discovered in a Colombian raid. He wants to dictate terms to Colombia in the short term and depose its elected government in favor of a socialist regime in the long term. Chavez wants to make Venezuela into what Fidel Castro hoped Cuba would be: a world power intent on humbling the US in our hemisphere. In order to do that, Chavez needs to chase the US out of Latin America altogether and leave a vacuum for Chavez to fill.
Until now, Chavez hasn’t found an American President he could bully into withdrawal. The strange response to the Honduran crisis apparently has Chavez believing that Obama is particularly malleable, although it could also be that Chavez has taken the lesson from Obama’s handling of Iran. It certainly shows that siding with leftists like Chavez, Daniel Ortega of Nicaragua, and the Castro brothers in Cuba in support of runaway leftist Manuel Zelaya didn’t endear the US to these martinets. Instead, just like Carter’s feckless foreign policy, it has emboldened those who oppose the US and the agenda of freedom.
Chavez is certainly a nut, but there is a method to this madness, and Colombia should be very, very worried.
Update: I routinely misspell Colombia, and did it all over this post. Many thanks to those who alerted me to it.

Well, if keeping the peace means preparing for war, our support of Columbia is right on target.
It’s time for Gran Colombia to rise again, in Chavez’ view. But the putative government of the restored country may not be what Chavez thinks it ought to be.

NoFanofLibs on November 9, 2009 at 1:04 PM
By Chavez announcing this particular threat, along with all the evidence Colombia has from the FARC raids, I think that Colombia has the pretext they need to decimate the Venezuelan military if they choose to do so.
They’ll take a hit, short-term, for being called the aggressor here but humiliating Chavez and decimating the Venezuelan military will weaken FARC, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Nicaragua, amongst others.

As a fellow traveler, Bill Ayer’s son has extensive experience advising the regieme. In fact, Hugo knows the other side of Obama better than a significant portion of our populace. The first audience is Columbia and any other Latin American nation. Obama is an after thought.

Chavez is brilliant, like Khrushchev measuring up Kennedy (and Putin with Obama), Chavez has measured up Obama, it is a gamble but the odds are well on his side, and the downside is little.
He will be known as the man who stood up to the U.S., even in losing he will be a hero.
If, and that is a big IF, he does lose, Obama will still extend his hand of friendship.
More then likely, Obama will be confused, wait to long to react.
On this day of Berlin wall coming down…think if this would have happened under someone like Reagan…before the sentence was finished, Reagan would have had a few choice words, and support would be on it’s way to Columbia.
Military must act swift…something Obama has no idea of.

Chavez cries wolf every week. Perhaps he means it this time, but it’s probably just another bluff. However, I think President Peace Prize is looking for a way to get closer to Chavez. I could see this playing out as an opportunity for “dialogue,” a backdoor way to reward Chavez and his FARC buddies.
Golden Boy on November 9, 2009 at 1:07 PM
Columbia would win this “war” pretty easily. Within hours, Columbian Kfir C.10′s and C.7′s would leave the Venezuelan Su-30′s in smoldering heaps in the high jungle’s. Then they’d take leisurely passes clusterbombing Chavez’s armor columns.
By the time the rag-tag remnants of Chavez’s infantry exited the jungle for the first march on a city, Columbia’s helicopters would pulverize them.
There’s no real evidence that Chavez could mount a realistic threat to Columbia militarily. That’s not the point though is it. Chavez’s only hope of continuing power is to increase the militaristic stance of his government and create the boogey-man threat to the uninformed citizenry.
Columbia would embarrass Chavez, and while I’m not wishing for war, I’d like to see Chavez taken down a peg or two not to mention I’d smile at the waste of money he’d not be able to readily regenerate when Columbia blows the heck out of his oil fields.
Jason Coleman on November 9, 2009 at 1:07 PM
Or they are an attempt to quiet discontent over lack of electrical power and adequate water supplies and rally the people into accepting “greater sacrifice” for patriotic reasons.
crosspatch on November 9, 2009 at 1:07 PM
I didn’t realize that Columbia was so well trained and armed militarily.
Still, no matter how well trained, the right thing to do would be to send support immediately to Columbia to show that Chavez is taking on more then he can handle….but it won’t happen.

Wikipedia, which is nearly always correct on the facts, claims the Colombian army is nearly twice the size of Venezuala’s army. Plus, hasn’t the Colombian army been in a hot war with FARC for years and years while the Venezualans haven’t?
All in all, and I’d want to hear Fausta Wertz weigh in on this before actually putting my money down, but doesn’t Colombia seem like it’s easily the better bet should war erupt?
Of course, the Won will undoubtedly back Ewwwgo. Because the whole mess is George Bush’s fault.

Chavez loves to talk big and take an aggressive posture whenever possible. I have little doubt that Obama will cave to Chavez if he is really threatened. After all the President has no spine or any willingness to stand up for his country.
However I also do not doubt that this matters little to Chavez. Oh, he wants to be a hero who stood up to the ‘Americanos’ alright but what he really after is taking down Colombia. Either way he will attack the Colombians I am sure of that. I am equally sure that Colombia will smack Chavez silly. So for Chavez it will be an interesting situation: He becomes a ‘hero’ for removing us from Latin America and takes a massive prestige hit from a defeat at Colombian hands.

Anyone taking bets that either Obama or Biden will wake up and realize that Chavez is roadkill for the making, and that all they have to do is send 1 CBG and a an F-22 Squadrons and maybe a Marine brigade or two to make this happen, very surgically?
.
Is this the international crisis that Biden predicted?
.
Continued diplomacy looks bad, a retreat (abandoning Colombia) would look wrong.
.
The only good thing about this is that it’s happening immediately after the Healtch Care bill passed the House, Obama’s popularity is very low, and very many Democrats are really sweating its obvious unpopularity.
.
The Democrat-controlled Presidency may not have a clue, but the Democrat-controlled House and Senate probably do.

Perhaps Congress will take action.

Is this true? The Colombian armed forces have been fighting drug lords in their own country for years, but are they strong enough to resist an attack from Venezuela AND the internal problems with the drug lords?
Obama and Hillary Clinton would be wise to take this threat seriously. Besides the problems with the drug trade, Colombia is very strategically located. It is the only South American country with ports on both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. If Chavez got control of Colombia, would Panama be next?

The Colombia-Venezuela border: a political row disguises an escalating drug war
FRIDAY, 06 NOVEMBER 2009 05:27 PABLO ROJAS MEJIAFor months, it has been clear that the border area presents a significant security threat for both Colombia and Venezuela. Many of the drugs that come out of Colombia are taken to Venezuela by land or boat en route to Central America and Europe. The FARC and ELN have a presence on both sides of the border, as do drug gangs and paramilitary groups. Nevertheless, so far, government responses have been ineffective and, crucially, totally uncoordinated. As violence continues to escalate, each country accuses the other of harboring illegal groups.
