ABC: FBI knew Hasan tried to contact Al-Qaeda

posted at 9:30 am on November 9, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Would it normally be considered a national-security problem if a high-ranking military officer had tried to contact an enemy of the United States during wartime?  ABC News reports that the FBI knew that Major Nidal Hasan had attempted to contact al-Qaeda and its associates months before Hasan went on a shooting rampage at Fort Hood, killing 13 people.  Did the FBI tell the Army about it?  That gets rather murky:

U.S. intelligence agencies were aware months ago that Army Major Nidal Hasan was attempting to make contact with people associated with al Qaeda, two American officials briefed on classified material in the case told ABC News.

It is not known whether the intelligence agencies informed the Army that one of its officers was seeking to connect with suspected al Qaeda figures, the officials said.

One senior lawmaker said the CIA had, so far, refused to brief the intelligence committees on what, if any, knowledge they had about Hasan’s efforts.

However, the Army certainly had enough information to know that Hasan was a problem:

A fellow Army doctor who studied with Hasan, Val Finell, told ABC News, “We would frequently say he was a Muslim first and an American second. And that came out in just about everything he did at the University.

Finell said he and other Army doctors complained to superiors about Hasan’s statements.

“And we questioned how somebody could take an oath of office…be an officer in the military and swear allegiance to the constitution and to defend America against all enemies, foreign and domestic and have that type of conflict,” Finell told ABC News.

Meanwhile, the imam with whom Hasan associated — with his own ties to the 9/11 terrorists — has issued a statement calling Hasan a “hero,” a “man of conscience” who successfully resolved the conflict of being Muslim and a member of the American armed forces.  Anwar al-Awlaki now lives in Yemen, but he used to run mosques in Denver, San Diego, and Falls Church before beating feet after the 9/11 attacks.  ABC reports that Awlaki runs a jihadist web site, which is where he posted his support of Hasan.

Did Hasan commit his act of terror alone or under instructions from Awlaki and his AQ associates?  That’s what investigators want to know, but either way it seems that a 9/10 attitude has re-entered national-security considerations.  Anyone attempting to contact al-Qaeda should have been arrested, or at the least kept away from military bases.  Why did our counter-terrorist efforts leave Nidal Hasan in position to actually deploy into a combat theater if the FBI knew or even suspected these attempts to contact the enemy?

It sounds a lot like the law-enforcement model of counterterrorism that failed us so spectacularly from 1993 to 2001.

Update (AP): In case you missed WaPo’s story on Hasan over the weekend, note what he told a neighbor on the morning of the murders after handing her a Koran: “I’m going to do good work for God.”

Update (Ed): Verum Serum has more on al-Awliki and Hasan’s “heroism”.

Update II: Joe Gandelman asks the right question: “If American intelligence agencies missed the signs pre-911 and they missed a big hint pre-Foot Hood, exactly what are they missing now, as you read this post?”  I would also add this: “And why are they missing it?”  Because in this case, it seems as though political correctness over the feelings of Muslims has played a part in hamstringing action — and that could be the case with other potential threats, too.

Leaders place responsibility on their own shoulders.

Cowards place blame on the most convenient target.

Leaders care about the dead and wounded and their loved ones.

Cowards change the subject.

There are children who have lost parents. Parents who have lost children. Spouses who have lost the loves of their lives. A brave woman is recovering from wounds because she was willing to die in order to stop this terror attack.

What shall we do about all this?

What is the most important thing?

Don’t jump to conclusions.

He got no specific warnings Libtard. Show me the memo that said “This guy is hijacking this plane at this time and he’s flying it into this building”.

It doesn’t exist. You try to lend credibility to your facts with words like “specific” … but there were no specifics – and there WAS a lot of useless noise.

But regardless of my fourth grade response skills – you’re still not honest enough to answer for the FACT that Bush kept us safe for 8 years after that and Obama lasted only ten months.

That’s a fact dude.

Now go ahead and personally insult me again because you find the facts hard for you to argue with. :D

But, having been warned, he ordered the various intelligence agencies to step up their efforts to discover a threat, and pay special attention to any otherwise obscure bits of intelligence they might receive.

Questions for Obama:
1. Will you perform enhanced interrogations on Hasan to determine if any more attacks are planned?

Uhh … absolutely – my EIT team is headed to texas now with hot chocolates and herbal teas – I’m confident they’ll get to the bottom of things.

2. Will you ask for the death penalty?

Isn’t that a bit extreme? You have to remember – a certain amount of this is OUR fault since this nation was a bit of a monster before you guys got smart and elected ME president!

3. Will Hasan be housed at Gitmo? Or a stateside prison?

Well … let’s let the judicial process play out here – don’t jump to conclusions. Just because he shot all those people doesn’t mean he’s guilty – and even if he is … doesn’t mean it’s his fault. We need to be open about these things and not shoot from the hip. Everything is on the table. Maybe we can rehabilitate him – wouldn’t that be a great thing?

Some of you honestly do strike me as advocating against all Muslims. Not everyone here, of course. But there’s a lot of posts suggesting just that.

AnninCA on November 9, 2009 at 10:39 AM

While we dither and claim to not be at war with Islam, Islam has has most clearly and repeatedly declared it is at war with us. While the internment camps for the Japanese Americans in WWII were an unpleasantry, they saved American lives. The level of infiltration of Japanese intelligence assets was pervasive, as documented in “At Dawn We Slept”, the benchmark recognized by historians as the seminal work
on the days prior to Pearl Harbor.

War is serious business, until we start taking it seriously we are going to continue to get hammered. We are losing this war as currently pursued, if we continue down this path, and after much blood and treasure wasted, we will find ourselves either destroyed or part of a Caliphate under Shariah rule.

Which is worse Anninca? Temporary unpleasantry, or permanat subjugation? Under which will the concept and practice of liberty and justice best prevail?

A hint, Nisei citizens have led their lives and thrived in our midst since the end of WWII.

Gorelik put up the “wall” between FBI and CIA, and Billy was too worried about fat interns and did not have the guts to kill Bin Laden 3 different times, and perhaps as many as 10, according to Michael Scheuer, head of the CIA Bin Laden unit.

This is Obama’s baby now. It has been since Jan. 20, 2009. He is blameworthy on every problem that we are now facing. He has done nothing to alleviate any of our problems as a nation. He has weakend us both here and overseas, he has taken over companies, he has spent our wealth, and he is trying to control our lives through health care. We have all seen and understood that he is not a leader. He puts our safety at risk every day. His upbringing and background suggest he is a Communist. His early associations also indicate it. He, himself, has admitted seeking out these types of people. He also sought out William Ayers in Chicago. These are all known facts that he has lied to the American people about. Read his books(if you can stand it) It’s all in there.
He has made “rookie” mistakes, yet they have not been corrected. He makes no effort to correct them because he doesn’t think he’s wrong. He makes no effort to even seek out any information.
I just want a president that doesn’t have a deep seated hatred of the USA and loves it as much as I do. My other standard is the same as the Constitution’s. He must be a natural born citizen of the US. He isn’t. Even according to his fake short form BC. His father never sought out citizenship, wasn’t a citizen and left the country when he was done with whatever he was doing. Both parents need to be citizens of the US. They weren’t. It doesn’t make any difference where he was born. No sense of duty or citizenship was ever passed on to this president by anyone in his family or his close associations. He went to foreign schools during his early schooling. His later schooling included alcohol, drugs, and visits by his grandfalther(being a “progressive” is putting it in nice terms)and him to Uncle Frank where they solved the problems of the world communist style.
This man should not be anywhere near the White House or any seat of power. He could not pass an FBI investigation for any secret clearance with his background. I know how tough that investigation was. My husband had to go through it a few times. He could not associate with a couple of friends that escaped from behind the Iron Curtain because of this. It wasn’t until he retired that he could be in contact with them again. Both had become citizens, married, and raised good families with American values. None of them were Obama voters.
It’s time for impeachment. We have made a terrible, terrible mistake. It’s time to start finding a way to correct it.

9/11 commission testimony on the Aug.6. 2001 PTB
(will not take a cnn link)

Notice who is put in charge of handling this threat situation.

Liberal hero Richard Clark (shown to have lied in his 9/11 testimony that Bush did not take al-qaeda seriously when he was found on tape Praising Bush and their attention to the terrorist threat).

For the essential crisis management task, we depended on the Counterterrorism Security Group chaired by Dick Clarke to be the interagency nerve center. The CSG consisted of senior counterterrorism experts from CIA, the FBI, the Department of Justice, the Defense Department (including the Joint Chiefs of Staff), the State Department, and the Secret Service.

The CSG had met regularly for many years, and its members had worked through numerous periods of heightened threat activity. As threat information increased, the CSG met more frequently, sometimes daily, to review and analyze the threat reporting and to coordinate actions in response. CSG members also had ready access to their Cabinet Secretaries and could raise any concerns they had at the highest levels

.

The threat reporting that we received in the spring and summer of 2001 was not specific as to time, nor place, nor manner of attack. Almost all of the reports focused on al Qaeda activities outside the United States, especially in the Middle East and North Africa.

In fact, the information that was specific enough to be actionable referred to terrorist operations overseas. More often, it was frustratingly vague. Let me read you some of the actual chatter that we picked up that spring and summer: “Unbelievable news coming in weeks,” “Big event … there will be a very, very, very, very big uproar,” “There will be attacks in the near future.”

Troubling, yes. But they don’t tell us when; they don’t tell us where; they don’t tell us who; and they don’t tell us how.

In this context, I want to address in some detail one of the briefing items we received, since its content has frequently been mischaracterized.

On August 6, 2001, the president’s intelligence briefing included a response to questions that he had earlier raised about any al Qaeda intentions to strike our homeland.

The briefing item reviewed past intelligence reporting, mostly dating from the 1990s, regarding possible al Qaeda plans to attack inside the United States. It referred to uncorroborated reporting that from 1998 that terrorists might attempt to hijack a U.S. aircraft in an attempt to blackmail the government into releasing U.S.-held terrorists who had participated in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. This briefing item was not prompted by any specific threat information. And it did not raise the possibility that terrorists might use airplanes as missiles

.

Despite the fact that the vast majority of the threat information we received was focused overseas, I was concerned about possible threats inside the United States. On July 5, chief of staff Andy Card and I met with Dick Clarke, and I asked Dick to make sure that domestic agencies were aware of the heightened threat period and were taking appropriate steps to respond, even though we did not have specific threats to the homeland.

Later that same day, Clarke convened a special meeting of his CSG, as well as representatives from the FAA, the INS, Customs, and the Coast Guard. At that meeting, these agencies were asked to take additional measures to increase security and surveillance.

Throughout this period of heightened threat information, we worked hard on multiple fronts to detect, protect against, and disrupt any terrorist plans or operations that might lead to an attack. For instance, the Department of Defense issued at least five urgent warnings to U.S. military forces that al Qaeda might be planning a near-term attack, and placed our military forces in certain regions on heightened alert.

The State Department issued at least four urgent security advisories and public worldwide cautions on terrorist threats, enhanced security measures at certain embassies, and warned the Taliban that they would be held responsible for any al Qaeda attack on U.S. interests.

No specific actionable intelligence.

Same intelligence that was supplied to Clinton( you know, the guy that let Osama go not once…not twice…but eight times) who did not shut airports down.
As a matter of fact, after receiving the same intelligence Bush did, Clinton had several opportunities to kill Bin Laden and passed.

But keep whining about Bush to hide the absolute failure that democrats have been in addressing National Security.

9/11 commission testimony showed that much was done in trying to protect America from these threats:

Despite the fact that the vast majority of the threat information we received was focused overseas, I was concerned about possible threats inside the United States. Fact: Terrorist acts were exclusively committed by Muslims so narrowing any search down to that group should substantially increase the chances of actually catching someone before they kill Americans.

They have it narrowed down much further. They know exactly who’s who in the mosques.

Why this didn’t lead to some better protection is beyond me, other than he had not yet taken any action. It might be easier to intercept a cell plan, actually. Then you can prove the intention to harm. With a lone mass murder plan, it’s hard to prove anything.

Well there is not much you can say to a guy / gal that refuses to recognize facts and revises history on a whim to ensure their personal hero escapes blame.

The fact is – yes there were a lot of indications before 9-11 that we’d be attacked. There was also a lot of noise and not too many specifics. There are also secret messages ebedded into Beatle albums if you play them backwards that I never found out about until someone else tipped me off to their existence.

So prior to 9-11, Bush – for the ten months he was president – didn’t know how to play the albums backwards.

He and Dick Cheney got real good at doing it after 9-11 – and they even showed Obama how to play the albums backward to find those hidden messages.

But Obama said … “I don’t need to do this s’hite! We’re not at war!”

So Obama quit playing the albums backward ..

And Ft. Hood happened.

Maybe he should have just done what Bush showed him how to do?

Nah!

Terrorism is a word describing a tactic, it is utter (yes Bush!) non-sense to be at war with a word. What, do declare victory only after all dictionary’s are eradicated? We are clearly not at war with Islam, which why we are losing to Islam which is at war with us.

If we continue to cling to political correctness, we will be still clutching it as we go to our graves. Domestically we have to enact measures in order to protect our population, as per our constitution.

And yes, I know that it is distasteful and not ideal, but screening, (profiling) segregating, and interring or deporting until the danger has passed is the sane solution. Again I point to the Nisei of WWII as example, it was not one of our stellar moments but we, and they survived to then go on and prosper.

Sometimes, no matter how unpleasant, one must choose the lesser of two evils.

Here is the PDB and summary:

CNN reports that the “White House declassified and released Saturday the daily intelligence briefing delivered to President Bush a month before the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.” [3]

“Portions of the intelligence report dealing with Osama bin Laden’s al Qaeda network and dated August 6, 2001, have been redacted for national security reasons, the White House said.

“The memo, titled ‘Bin Laden determined to attack inside the United States,’ had been described by the White House as a largely historical document with scant information about domestic al Qaeda threats.

“The memo includes intelligence on al Qaeda threats as recent as three months before the attacks.

“Much of the intelligence was uncorroborated, and nothing in the memo points directly to the September 11 attacks.

“Highlights of the report include:

* An intelligence report received in May 2001 indicating that al Qaeda was trying to send operatives to the United States through Canada to carry out an attack using explosives. That information had been passed on to intelligence and law enforcement agencies.

* An allegation that al Qaeda had been considering ways to hijack American planes to win the release of operatives who had been arrested in 1998 and 1999.

* An allegation that bin Laden was set on striking the United States as early as 1997 and through early 2001.

* Intelligence suggesting that suspected al Qaeda operatives were traveling to and from the United States, were U.S. citizens, and may have had a support network in the country.

* A report that at least 70 FBI investigations were under way in 2001 regarding possible al Qaeda cells/terrorist-related operations in the United States.

The following is a transcript of the August 6, 2001, presidential daily briefing entitled Bin Laden determined to strike in US. Parts of the original document were not made public by the White House for security reasons.

Clandestine, foreign government, and media reports indicate bin Laden since 1997 has wanted to conduct terrorist attacks in the US. Bin Laden implied in U.S. television interviews in 1997 and 1998 that his followers would follow the example of World Trade Center bomber Ramzi Yousef and “bring the fighting to America.”

After U.S. missile strikes on his base in Afghanistan in 1998, bin Laden told followers he wanted to retaliate in Washington, according to a — – service.

An Egyptian Islamic Jihad (EIJ) operative told – - service at the same time that bin Laden was planning to exploit the operative’s access to the U.S. to mount a terrorist strike.

The millennium plotting in Canada in 1999 may have been part of bin Laden’s first serious attempt to implement a terrorist strike in the U.S.

Convicted plotter Ahmed Ressam has told the FBI that he conceived the idea to attack Los Angeles International Airport himself, but that in —, Laden lieutenant Abu Zubaydah encouraged him and helped facilitate the operation. Ressam also said that in 1998 Abu Zubaydah was planning his own U.S. attack.

Ressam says bin Laden was aware of the Los Angeles operation. Although Bin Laden has not succeeded, his attacks against the U.S. Embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998 demonstrate that he prepares operations years in advance and is not deterred by setbacks. Bin Laden associates surveyed our embassies in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam as early as 1993, and some members of the Nairobi cell planning the bombings were arrested and deported in 1997.

Al Qaeda members — including some who are U.S. citizens — have resided in or traveled to the U.S. for years, and the group apparently maintains a support structure that could aid attacks.

Two al-Qaeda members found guilty in the conspiracy to bomb our embassies in East Africa were U.S. citizens, and a senior EIJ member lived in California in the mid-1990s.

A clandestine source said in 1998 that a bin Laden cell in New York was recruiting Muslim-American youth for attacks.

We have not been able to corroborate some of the more sensational threat reporting, such as that from a —- service in 1998 saying that Bin Laden wanted to hijack a U.S. aircraft to gain the release of “Blind Sheikh” Omar Abdel Rahman and other U.S.-held extremists.

Nevertheless, FBI information since that time indicates patterns of suspicious activity in this country consistent with preparations for hijackings or other types of attacks, including recent surveillance of federal buildings in New York.

The FBI is conducting approximately 70 full-field investigations throughout the U.S. that it considers bin Laden-related. CIA and the FBI are investigating a call to our embassy in the UAE in May saying that a group or bin Laden supporters was in the U.S. planning attacks with explosives.

Now remember…the NYTimes ran a story on it’s front page Sept.10,2001 by CIA and liberal hero Charles Johnson that stated Bin Laden did not have the means or ability to make any type of significant attacks in the US.

Don’t hear liberals whining about that ignorance coming from the leading source of information for the democratic party.

We also have a he!! of a lot more evidence that Iran is building a bomb and wants to use it but we still have liberals claiming that they stopped in 2003 (remember the idiotic 2007 intelligence report liberals cheered about so loud that stated this) and that there is no “absolute” proof that Iran wants to build and use an atomic bomb. It’s just made up by those crazy neo-cons.

But Bush gets old intelligence that has no specifics except to state the obvious intentions of al-qaeda wanting to attack America and this is verifiable proof that Airports should have been shut down.
Shutting down airports is the only way you would have been able to stop Atta and the other hijackers since they had visas,id’s, and legally bought tickets.

Of course we might know a lot more about what really happened during this time period and before it democratic hero Sandy Berger would reveal all the information he stole from the Achieves.

I could go on, but I am out of ink.

“And we questioned how somebody could take an oath of office…be an officer in the military and swear allegiance to the constitution and to defend America against all enemies, foreign and domestic and have that type of conflict,” Finell told ABC News.

Muslims are permitted to lie (taqiyya) in the promotion of their religion.

Sura 16:20 16:20 Those whom they invoke besides Allah create nothing and are themselves created.

Hence, an oath to the United States is invalid on its face, because the United States is not Allah.

Sura 16:106 Any one who, after accepting faith in Allah, utters Unbelief,- except under compulsion, his heart remaining firm in Faith – but such as open their breast to Unbelief, on them is Wrath from Allah, and theirs will be a dreadful Penalty.

It is permitted to utter a false oath of allegiance “under compulsion”.

Sura 3:28 3:28: Let not the believers take for friends or helpers unbelievers rather than believers. If any do that, in nothing will there be help from Allah; except by way of precaution, that ye may guard yourselves from them.

The “except by way of precaution” means that you are permitted to pretend to be friends, for the promotion of your own safety and of Islam.

Your “opinion” that it is not valid means nothing.

This testimony was verified and signed off on by Republicans and Democrats of the 9/11 commission.

“Bush KNEW about 9/11 and let it happen anyways!!! Want to know how I know this? Because the Whitehouse got memos saying that there is a possibility that a terrorist attack involving planes could happen sometime, somewhere, but we doen’t know where, when, or how.”

Heard it over and over again.

Now that Obama is in the White house and this happened on his watch:

U.S. intelligence agencies were aware months ago that Army Major Nidal Hasan was attempting to make contact with people associated with al Qaeda, two American officials briefed on classified material in the case told ABC News.

Nothing but crickets.

There really isn’t any terror until people think twice about going into military bases lest they be killed by unhinged jihadists.

As to the intelligence services failing miserably, I’d go you one further and suggest that the administration at Walter Reed needs to be held to account as well (if the stories of his time there are true). The evidence that Hasan was unfit to be in the Army is stacking up even without the connections to terrorist organizations and the 9/11/01 hijackers.
