Obama may make decision to send 34K more troops to Af-Pak soon
posted at 12:00 pm on November 8, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
It’s been three months since General Stanley McChrystal informed the Obama administration of the resources he needs to successfully prosecute the war. The controversy over the elections in Afghanistan have been resolved for a week now, which supposedly kept Barack Obama from making a decision on whether to give McChrystal more troops and the number that will be sent. This morning, McClatchy reports on an apparent trial balloon coming from the White House that Obama will split the difference between McChrystal’s medium- and high-risk options for troop support of a counterinsurgency strategy — but still won’t make a decision until after Obama takes a tour of Asia later this month:
President Barack Obama is nearing a decision to send more than 30,000 additional U.S. troops to Afghanistan next year, but he may not announce it until after he consults with key allies and completes a trip to Asia later this month, administration and military officials have told McClatchy.
As it now stands, the administration’s plan calls for sending three Army brigades from the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Ky. and the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum, N.Y. and a Marine brigade, for a total of as many as 23,000 additional combat and support troops.
Another 7,000 troops would man and support a new division headquarters for the international force’s Regional Command (RC) South in Kandahar, the Taliban birthplace where the U.S. is due to take command in 2010. Some 4,000 additional U.S. trainers are likely to be sent as well, the officials said. …
It splits the difference between two other McChrystal options: a “high-risk” one that called for 20,000 additional troops and a “medium-risk” one that would add 40,000 to 45,000 troops.
The officials, all of whom spoke on the condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to discuss internal administration planning, cautioned that Obama’s decision isn’t final, and won’t be until after administration officials discuss it with the NATO allies at a Nov. 23 meeting of the alliance’s North Atlantic Council and its Military Committee.
Obama is touring Asia for economic and security reasons. He leaves Wednesday, but he’s already off to a bad start, as China has begun retaliating against Obama for his “protectionist” policies:
China on Friday accused the US of protectionist and biased trade policies less than a week before president Barack Obama’s first visit to Beijing.
In a stinging rebuke to Washington, China’s commerce ministry promised to take measures to protect its domestic industry after the US slapped anti-dumping duties on $2.6bn of Chinese steel pipe imports. The duties are part of a growing roster of trade conflicts between the two countries, despite a high-level meeting last week in China aimed at reducing tensions.
“China resolutely opposes such protectionist practices and will take steps to protect the interests of our domestic industries,” Yao Jian, ministry spokesman, said on its website.
Part of the reason Obama wants to make his Asia tour is to shore up efforts to force North Korea into disarming its nuclear stockpile. It doesn’t make much sense to alienate China, the one nation with the most influence on Kim Jong-Il, by starting a trade war. In fact, given the state of the US and global economies, a trade war would be just about the worst possible thing for everyone, especially the US, since China holds so much of our debt.
Putting that aside, the delay in making a decision has become an embarrassment, even if it does look as though Obama will move in the right direction by committing more resources to the Af-Pak theater. This is, after all, a war, a shooting war in which Americans and our allies are getting killed while Obama ruminates over a series of options that he’s had for months. Resolving the Karzai-Abdullah election standoff should not have precluded the Obama administration from consulting NATO about the troop levels needed for the war. It sounds like the latest excuse for an entire series of procrastinations that Obama has used to avoid a politically damaging decision.
And now the war has to wait for Obama to get some face time in Asia? Why not wait until after the Christmas shopping season?

He screws the soliders he is going to send even more by putting off his decision for so long. It takes TIME to prepare for a deployment. Paperwork, immunizations, training, ect. It took me almost a full year to get called up from reserve and in-processed to go to Iraq in time for 2005. I quit my job in late 2003 and headed to Kansas early 2004. I didn’t step off the plane in Kuwait until jan 2005. Now don’t get me wrong, an active duty unit wouldn’t take that long to get mobilized but it still takes a while. Right now these potential units are all in a state of Limbo.

Obama wants to pass Health care socializations before he takes the political hit of sending more troops to war. I would bet my next paycheck on it. Once Obamacare passes we’ll see a friday afternoon news dump detailing the number of troops getting sent over.

He’s not waiting until after the Christmas shopping season because he knows too many people will be worried (p—ed) about the economy then. Even when it’s the right choice (and I am not convinced that providing a number of troops between two well thought out tactical plans – is it high risk heavy, or low risk light? is the right choice), he has to find the perfect dead of a weekend night to do it.

Your point about alienating the Chinese is well taken. It’s worth noting, however, that before any really consequential meeting, they will almost always air a major grievance, or launch an assault on the good faith of the other party. Engendering such preemptive loss of face is a tried and true Chinese negotiating tactic, designed to throw those across the table off balance and on the defensive.

I feel very bad for the US military who have had the misfortune of having a truly worthless Commander in Chief like Obama. Thank you, moronic Americans for giving the world a truly moronic, gutless President.
Splitting the difference? What a gutless piece of chickensh**t this country elected as President.. All this tells me is that he was NEVER serious about Afghanistan or Pakistan.. not sending the necessary amount of troops is putting the entire mission at risk – calling this “medium risk” is nothing more than a shell game.
After the US muddles through this war for another 3 years with this “medium risk” strategy, Obama will then start officially retreating once he gets re-elected.
Obama sshould atleast be adult about this – this country does not have the stomach to fight a long drawn out war ANYWHERE – let alone Afghanistan. Electing a sissy like Obama is a sign of the times.
So,instead of playing this charade of “splitting the difference” and then retreating in 4 years, you might as well call it quits starting NOW… coming to think of it, may be this is what America is doing.

Obama doesn’t think, or ponder, or reason. It is obvious what is taking time. He gets health care and cap and trade he sends troops to Afghanistan. If he doesn’t get those things, then no troops. He’s a petulant man-child. This isn’t complicated. Obviously we need to be making more noise. The press isn’t doing it. Looks like it is us. Time to roll.
BetseyRoss on November 8, 2009 at 12:28 PM
That seems plausible, but if the Senate takes until January to pass Obamacare, that means he has to drag this out another 2 months. He’ll take an even bigger political hit if he does that.

We’re skipping right past Latin America in our downward spiral. Just wait until Israel hits Iran and that monetary shock hits the world. You ain’t seen nothing, yet. This feral government’s reaction is going to make Latin American dictators go, “Holy sh#t!”
Last night Congress showed us what rabid animals they are, pushing that ridiculously unpopular and totally un-Constitutional bill through RIGHT AFTER the Dems took a total thumping in the elections. As rabidly insane America-haters as the Indonesian imbecile and his gang of marxists, maoists and all around idiots in the White House are, Congress is keeping pace with them quite easily.
There are very few solutions to this feral government, though secession still remains the best option available. Any nation that has an infestation of leftists the way the US has is terminal. Leftists won’t let anyone have liberty (as they demand a national superstate that dictates everything to all) so they cannot be bargained with or dealt with like rational beings. This is the sad truth of today.

I said it before , I’ll say it again. This treasonous fraud is dithering until the Afghan winter sets in and the effectiveness in fighting the terrorists is diminished while the Taliban gets to regroup and build forces for a spring assault. By that time, the cry to pull out will have support.. handing a victory to the terrorists, who will then be that much closer to acquiring nukes.
This is being done on purpose, or incredible naive stupidity.

Thanks to the demented P.C. infecting the government and the military, about 50 fewer troops from Fort Hood will be available to deploy.
Allowing potential (or practically-open in
MajorTraitor Hasan’s case) jihadists into the service and the government during a global war against resurgent Islamic Imperialism (“Killing infidels since 622 A.D.!”) is as insane as having “nice Nazis” serve in Churchill’s Cabinet or FDR’s War Department during WW II.P.C. – fatal when swallowed.

Obama is giving himself cover.
Of course waiting to send the troops is ridiculous.
By sending half as many troops as are needed/requested simply gives Obama wiggle room to claim, “See, I sent more troops and it didn’t work, but we sure gave it the ‘ol college try there what, what!” which will strengthen the “retreat with honor” meme.

Obama wants out of Afghanistan but CAN’T because the facts (that he won’t talk about) shows Bush’ actions were correct.
He’s a Star Trek-Next Gen liberal who believes he can just dialog his way to a diplomatic solution… the problem is there’s nobody in Afghanistan to make a diplomatic solution with and neither ST:TNG or Marx told him how to think about this scenario. If he’s like most of the “educated” society today he has no capability to self-reason because he can’t google the answer.
So the only choice he can make is increase the troops which he finds personally distasteful becase, y’know, war isn’t the answer… pull out of Afghanistan which he can’t because it will be a disaster on all sides or stall until the answer becomes apparent to him.

The 7000 to man the command here in Kandahar is not part of the increase. We were already on the hook for that and he knew it. We’ve been talking about the bridging and the bridging force for RC South since 2006.
And we don’t need any more combat support troops as long as we have people (even within my brigade) who can spend their time taking college courses on base while we’re doing missions outside the wire every day.
But whatever you’re going to send, you need to notify those units now that the plan is set. They’re not going to get here overnight.

There is always the Constitutional ineligibility, but we would need a real judiciary to have that occur – not to mention too many on the right who argue more fervently for the proposition that dual citizens are included in the class of natural born citizens than many of the America-haters on the left.
It is a real shame that so many refused to see the peril our nation was headed into (I include fools like Krauthammer in that) and tried to make pretend that it was “just another day in America”. These same morons can’t even bring themselves to admit that the dithering on Afghanistan is purely intentional, designed to bleed our troops and harm our nation. They think they are being slick by assigning some sort of political motivation to the Traitor-in-Chief’s dithering, but it isn’t political. It is revenge and an active attack on America, writ boldly.
By the time these fools get around to figuring it out, though, it’s too late. The US will not make it to 2012 with this imbecile and America-hater in office. I wish people on the right would start to realize this and stop with all the public niceties, as they do the US no favors, at all.

If Obama increases the American troop level in the

+ 21,000 (added by Obama back a few months ago)
+ 34,000 (if that’s what it turns out to be)
= 102,000, so I will start calling him LBJ II.

I’m pretty sure that soon, sooner than O thinks, the CIA will be unearthing some interesting information on his middle east travels in the 90′s. Little things. Like his passport. And college admission applications.

At least Jimmy Carter had an entertaining brother.

Could make enough of a difference to swing a few districts and states which could make all the difference in the world.

As are they from our “allies” in the Afghan army and police, which preceded Ft. Hood and will almost certainly also follow it. But, we daren’t say that either as McChrystal, Obama’s hand-picked general, says they are just “isolated incidents”.

It’s a good thing we have the wise one to send the correct number of troops 34k rather than the liberal one of 80k. Politicians always know better than military experts./sarc
JERK! He’s putting our soldiers in danger by not going the mile.

The Precedent has committed many truly impeachable acts, starting with the obviously criminal funding of his campaign and extending to his intentional dithering on Afghanistan in order to bleed our troops (which goes beyond impeachable into the realm of pure treason). I’ve written “add this to the articles of impeachment” on many comment to be able to easily search his accumulated high crimes and misdemeanors.
Unfortunately, as you note, this rabid Congress would never impeach the America-hating slug (as they are just as bad as he is), so impeachment is just off the table as a real possibility. That doesn’t really leave much room. That’s how the left likes it, though. They are suicide bombers who are happy to take the US down with them, and The Precedent is the ultimate suicide bomber who slithered into the office with the intent of doing nothing but exacting revenge on the US, no matter the cost to him. He sees himself as the avenging angel of the third world come to wreak havoc on the first world. But, we invited just this with our moronic affirmative action and political correctness. Just as the intentional misvaluation of debt with Fannie and Freddie and the CRA took our monetary system to the brink of collapse (which we will arrive at, soon enough) the intentional misvaluation of human capital embedded in the affirmative action/political correctness attitude will bring our society to the brink of collapse – so the white guilters will finally get the ultimate atonement they sought to alleviate themselves of the illusory guilt that dominates their pea-brains and the emotional wreckage that constitute their personalities.

Let me guess. Pick NG troops from swing states, deploy them in extraordinary numbers prior to the 2010 elections, then restrict their overseas absentee ballots from being counted after the fact.
Tactics.

In fact, given the state of the US and global economies, a trade war would be just about the worst possible thing for everyone, especially the US, since China holds so much of our debt.
Ha-ha! What could go wrong?
A year ago DUMB Americans made a very grave mistake.
