Obama may make decision to send 34K more troops to Af-Pak soon

posted at 12:00 pm on November 8, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

It’s been three months since General Stanley McChrystal informed the Obama administration of the resources he needs to successfully prosecute the war.  The controversy over the elections in Afghanistan have been resolved for a week now, which supposedly kept Barack Obama from making a decision on whether to give McChrystal more troops and the number that will be sent.  This morning, McClatchy reports on an apparent trial balloon coming from the White House that Obama will split the difference between McChrystal’s medium- and high-risk options for troop support of a counterinsurgency strategy — but still won’t make a decision until after Obama takes a tour of Asia later this month:

President Barack Obama is nearing a decision to send more than 30,000 additional U.S. troops to Afghanistan next year, but he may not announce it until after he consults with key allies and completes a trip to Asia later this month, administration and military officials have told McClatchy.

As it now stands, the administration’s plan calls for sending three Army brigades from the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Ky. and the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum, N.Y. and a Marine brigade, for a total of as many as 23,000 additional combat and support troops.

Another 7,000 troops would man and support a new division headquarters for the international force’s Regional Command (RC) South in Kandahar, the Taliban birthplace where the U.S. is due to take command in 2010. Some 4,000 additional U.S. trainers are likely to be sent as well, the officials said. …

It splits the difference between two other McChrystal options: a “high-risk” one that called for 20,000 additional troops and a “medium-risk” one that would add 40,000 to 45,000 troops.

The officials, all of whom spoke on the condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to discuss internal administration planning, cautioned that Obama’s decision isn’t final, and won’t be until after administration officials discuss it with the NATO allies at a Nov. 23 meeting of the alliance’s North Atlantic Council and its Military Committee.

Obama is touring Asia for economic and security reasons.  He leaves Wednesday, but he’s already off to a bad start, as China has begun retaliating against Obama for his “protectionist” policies:

China on Friday accused the US of protectionist and biased trade policies less than a week before president Barack Obama’s first visit to Beijing.

In a stinging rebuke to Washington, China’s commerce ministry promised to take measures to protect its domestic industry after the US slapped anti-dumping duties on $2.6bn of Chinese steel pipe imports. The duties are part of a growing roster of trade conflicts between the two countries, despite a high-level meeting last week in China aimed at reducing tensions.

“China resolutely opposes such protectionist practices and will take steps to protect the interests of our domestic industries,” Yao Jian, ministry spokesman, said on its website.

Part of the reason Obama wants to make his Asia tour is to shore up efforts to force North Korea into disarming its nuclear stockpile.  It doesn’t make much sense to alienate China, the one nation with the most influence on Kim Jong-Il, by starting a trade war.  In fact, given the state of the US and global economies, a trade war would be just about the worst possible thing for everyone, especially the US, since China holds so much of our debt.

Putting that aside, the delay in making a decision has become an embarrassment, even if it does look as though Obama will move in the right direction by committing more resources to the Af-Pak theater.  This is, after all, a war, a shooting war in which Americans and our allies are getting killed while Obama ruminates over a series of options that he’s had for months.  Resolving the Karzai-Abdullah election standoff should not have precluded the Obama administration from consulting NATO about the troop levels needed for the war.  It sounds like the latest excuse for an entire series of procrastinations that Obama has used to avoid a politically damaging decision.

And now the war has to wait for Obama to get some face time in Asia?   Why not wait until after the Christmas shopping season?

We’re skipping right past Latin America in our downward spiral. Just wait until Israel hits Iran and that monetary shock hits the world. You ain’t seen nothing, yet. This feral government’s reaction is going to make Latin American dictators go, “Holy sh#t!”

Last night Congress showed us what rabid animals they are, pushing that ridiculously unpopular and totally un-Constitutional bill through RIGHT AFTER the Dems took a total thumping in the elections. As rabidly insane America-haters as the Indonesian imbecile and his gang of marxists, maoists and all around idiots in the White House are, Congress is keeping pace with them quite easily.

There are very few solutions to this feral government, though secession still remains the best option available. Any nation that has an infestation of leftists the way the US has is terminal. Leftists won’t let anyone have liberty (as they demand a national superstate that dictates everything to all) so they cannot be bargained with or dealt with like rational beings. This is the sad truth of today.

Do what you can locally. The Tea Partiers here in Tucson managed to knock off one ultra-liberal council member in last week’s election and put in a conservative. May not seem like a big deal to some, but we have to start somewhere. We’ve been complacent for too long; it’s how these Liberal fools have gained so much power. We have to fight back — at every level of government. So do whatever you can in your own community. Volunteer to be a poll watcher, show up at local protests, donate money to your local Tea Party or conservative candidates — whatever you can do. And recognize that there will be setbacks and disappointments along the way. But don’t lose heart, and don’t ever give up. We can’t afford to sit back and do nothing anymore. We are literally in a fight for this country’s future. Stand up and be counted.

So back to our adventure in Afghanistan.

The brigade’s commander, Brig. Gen. Lawrence D. Nicholson, said his Marines will focus their efforts on protecting civilians from the Taliban and on restoring Afghan government services, instead of mounting a series of hunt-and-kill missions against the insurgents.

Insert Taliban laughter here.

By the time these fools get around to figuring it out, though, it’s too late. The US will not make it to 2012 with this imbecile and America-hater in office. I wish people on the right would start to realize this and stop with all the public niceties, as they do the US no favors, at all.

I mean giving Mr. Crow a Freedom Metal and then shouting him out about receiving the Congressional Metal of Honor and then talking about the killings at Fort Hood; totally ignorant and insensitive. My son serves there and was near the area where the killings occurred. Obama has less respect for our military than Clinton did and that is saying something.

If the Ditherer in Chief was replaced one morning with Osama Bin Laden, we would not find any difference. Let that sink it. If OBL became our President, he would do the exact same things that the current ditherer in chief is doing. He would wait for winter, send a measly amount of troops, withdraw from Afghanistan and give back a base to the Taliban. This man has no feelings for the United States. He is like the alien from “To Serve Man” or an anthropologist observing funny americans. The first thing he does after the first terrorist attack under his watch is to say “let’s not jump into conclusions”. Not outrage or anger or tears or determination but shoutouts. He ignores the terrorist’s religious motivations. He establishes relations with thugs around the world but calls Fox News evil and his opposition “anti goverment tea baggers”. He insults traditional allies, submits to our enemies and passes bills that in effect bankrupts the US. If OBL became our president by chance, how would he do anything differently?

All Obama cares about is giving the “appearance” he takes fighting the jihadist seriously.

Anyone paying attention can see that Obama’s decision making process is based on political considerations, not on military ones that are focused on winning the war against the jihadist that he claimed for 2 years was so important.

McCrystal’s plan states that the optimum chance to win includes bringing in about 80,000 troops.

We will see if Obama backs up his campaign rhetoric to take the fight to the jihadist and do what it takes to win.

Looking at Obama’s history so far suggest that he was just saying this to appear strong on National Defense and will do what benefits him politically.

I see Obama using the democratic controlled Congress as a cover for a slow phased surrender.
Obama will try to appear tough by “asking” (which the President does not have to do)for a significant amount of troops but will be “thwarted” by the democrats in Congress and their claims the American people don’t want to continue the fight.

This will lead to disaster for coalition troops and significant gains for the jihadist.

This will also pretty much fall in line with Obama’s policies of appeasement to our enemies:

US puts its faith in Pakistan’s military

By Syed Saleem Shahzad

http://www.atimes.com/atimes/South_Asia/KK06Df02.html

ISLAMABAD – Abdullah Abdullah, who this week withdrew from the presidential election runoff in Afghanistan, thereby handing victory to the incumbent, Hamid Karzai, did so under pressure from the United States, Asia Times Online has learned.

In exchange for the pullout of the non-Pashtun Abdullah, Pakistan’s military has agreed to actively mediate between Washington and the Taliban over a reconciliation plan that will allow the US to exit from Afghanistan, as it is doing in Iraq, with a semblance of success.

Of course the difference in leaving Iraq is that we defeated the terrorist and militias and turned it over to a fairly good functioning government, army, and police force.

The Obama administration is simply looking for a way out with the “semblance” of winning.

Turning the land over to the Taliban, thinking they can negotiate with the Taliban, and letting the Pakistani army take the lead in these negotiations is a joke.

Hillary stated this herself in the much ballyhooed comments about “not believing that Pakistan cannot get al-qaeda leaders”.

Now the Obama administration wants to let them take the lead.

This is nothing but a slow bleed surrender that uses our troops as political props to give the appearance of wanting to fight when in essence all Obama cares about is his socialist agenda here at home.

This has epic fail all over it and I hope our military leaders and the American people hold them responsible for this atrocity against our Soldiers, their mission, and the security of the United States.

Baxter Greene on November 8, 2009 at 2:49 PM

When Obama did shout outs for 2 minutes when it was time for him to announce the horrible killings at Ft. Hood, America learned that he simply has no intrinsic feelings for anyone else but himself. We conservatives knew that he was a cold calculating opportunist from the beginning, now the libs know it too. Obama is simply a campaign head and nothing more. He doesn’t have a leadership bone in his body.

Pity for all of us who didn’t vote for him.

nyx on November 8, 2009 at 2:54 PM

I was a strong advocate of the surge in Iraq just to let you know where I’m coming from.

However, I am growing increasingly alarmed that our brave troops are being placed in harm’s way for no good purpose.

1 The chief argument for staying in Afghanistan is because it was here that under Taliban protection, Al Qaeda planned and carried out the WTC and Pentagon attacks.

Yes that’s true. But it was POLITICAL CORRECTNESS that led to the SUCCESS of these attacks. Warning signs that “Middle Eastern” men were learning how to fly (BUT NOT LAND) planes within the very shadows of the CIA. either went ignored or the “Whistle blowers” were called RACISTS.

Also political correctness by the airlines because pilots could always make a violent turn with their aircraft but chose not to for fear of injuring passengers.A similar attempt today would lead to a violent turn, injuring all terrorists and a few passengers not buckled in. The remaining passengers would tear the terrorists apart and the injured passengers would make their trial lawyers rich.

2 A second reason given for remaining in Afghanistan is that the Taliban is growing in power (amazingly since Obama became president) and that these outlaw tribesmen can threaten a weakened Pakisitan’s nuclear arsenal.

As weak as it is, it’s unlikely that Taliban hill tribesmen could overwhelm Pakistan’s government and take control of nuclear weapons-and if they did, I’m sure even Hillary Clinton could figure out the correct response. Besides this threat is FAR FAR FAR LESS than that posed by a nuclear Iran who would freely give nukes to any qualified terrorist who asks.

I believe we should remain in Afghanistan only if certain criteria are met, viz:

1 US troops have the right to defend themselves in combat even against women and children who are either in the vicinity or are aiding or abetting the enemy.
2 US troops in Afghanistan are subject only to the laws of the United States and not some foreign adjudicatory panel or international tribunal.
3 Any large “wedding reception” or “festival” in a hot combat zone should not only be treated with scepticism but recognized as an enemy ploy.
4 Troop requests by field commanders should be responded to with alacrity-and accepted or rejected by the president giving copious reasons why.
5 The purpose of the war should be to destroy Al Qaeda and Taliban and all who help them including women, children, “wedding parties”, poppy growers,, weapons dealers, etc.
6 The purpose of the war should NOT be to build a stable government in a country which has never had one.Of course, with Taliban and Al Qaeda gone, the country can’t help but be at least a little more stable than it was.
7 US troops are combat-trained personnel and support elements who aid them and are neither missionaries nor social workers.
8 If “Allies” are not willing to help us in this venture, we reserve the right to reciprocate in the future when they need help. And no, Denmark, Holland and Norway, we will not submit to international law especially from countries who offered little or no resistance to the invading Nazis and then screamed for help (from us) when they were brutally occupied.

Unless we are willing to fight to win this war with the limited objectives outlined above and do not get involved with “nation building” we SHOULD GET OUT NOW!!!

Im sorry but sometimes you have to make a decision.
Now if that decision is bad – ok own up to it..

I had to do this on many occasions (but only with my job at stake) not soldiers lives ..

I just know three things
1. dithering or procrastinating does nothing to solve the situation and usually makes it worse

2. at some point you have to make a decision and then suffer the consequences

3. if it is wrong then you have to own up to it..

But there’s the rub..

The liberals want
all the glory
all the power
all the money and wealth

But they dont want to do what is necessary to gain such things..

They dont want to be servants so they just expect people will give them glory because of their start power (gag)..

The want the power but dont ever want to take responsiblity – again just like hollywood so called action heros (ALL FAKE) with nothing to back it up except hot air..

They want the wealth and riches but dont want to work hard or honestly for such wealth and instead to placate their guilt because of thier underserved riches they instead climb to power and then tax everyone elses wealth to give it to those who didnt earn it..

These people are all one and the same
Holly wood actors, liberals, activists, laywers whatever..

they all want you to worship them
But everyone knows not one of these liberals has done anything worthwhile to even be aknowledged for,

sorry obama – but your liberal ass is not in the frying pan
along with all of the liberals
. and if you screw up this time
People die..
Soldiers die
and you will be held responsible for it..

there is no blaming bush to get out of this one..

So to all the democrats and obama i say this
Choose but choose wisely..

He might be needing those troops closer to home if Hugo has anything to say about it. He is threatening to invade Columbia.

Just felt the need to vent because of what happened at Fort Hood, and then they make excuses for that sorry example of human garbage.
feel better now!!!

concernedsenior on November 8, 2009 at 7:53 PM

Seems to be a lot of us ol farts venting. I hate to spend my last years all pissed off, but ol Barry, Nancy, and the rest of the marxists don’t leave me much choice

I knew there had to be someone else that feels as frustrated as I do.
You know how Obummer says we should volunteer, well I live in AZ and am going to volunteer to work for Simcox for senate against McCain. think that’s what he means????

concernedsenior on November 8, 2009 at 9:35 PM

This is nothing but a slow bleed surrender that uses our troops as political props to give the appearance of wanting to fight when in essence all Obama cares about is his socialist agenda here at home.

First as tragedy, second as farce. We’ve been here before, during the Johnson Administration. Again a war left over from a previous Admin’s policy, that the sitting President didn’t have the guts to fish or cut bait, and instead bungled his way into a spiraling bloodbath. Dereliction of Duty by then-Major H. R. McMaster should be required reading for all candidates to the Presidency, and all Officers of the service, if only to gain an appreciation of what NOT to do in managing small-scale conflicts – with current Af-Pak policy as a supporting case study.

Blacksmith on November 8, 2009 at 10:01 PM

Obambi is an idiot.

Men and women who continue to volunteer to fight and die for our country pay every day because of it.

Here’s a wish: develop mini-nukes, just like the ones they used in Starship Troopers, and fire ‘em in the caves.

That…or start letting our people fight like they did in WW2. Kill anything that moves. Carpet bomb the hell out of everything. Rebuild what’s left. Save American lives.

HAnthonyWayne on November 8, 2009 at 10:27 PM

This is political triangulation at its worst. Pres. Obama is playing fast and loose with the lives of the men and women of the armed forces. He’s trying to appease both ends of the political spectrum: firstly to appease the right wing by sending troops at all and secondly to appease the left wing by not sending all of the troops for which McChrystal asked. This is a calculated move that shows a complete lack of appreciation for the sanctity of the lives of our soldiers.

Too little.

Too late.

Wrong reason.

That’s Obama trying to vote present long enough the problem goes away. He does not realize that no decision is a decision in itself.

35,000 maybe!, out of 80,000 requested for success, making it a medium to high risk operation. Running the war by trial balloon, Obama is putting our troops in danger. I’m very tempted to say 80,000 more or get out. Obama is setting this up to fail, and that will be counted in Solders life’s being loss for Obama’s political agenda. Only thing that interest Obama is how Karzai fixed the election.
I think he has to wait to see if it’s okay with China if we deploys more troops or not.
Okay so where not nation building, surly not a democracy, and we are not going into the mountains to behead the beast.
What the hell are we doing? I know,,, we are being targets.
We need clear objectives, which Obama has none.
Our troops are the best in the world, we should not waste them on Obama follies. The UN and World Bank need to step in and help develop the infrastructure, they could also supply the blue helmets to protect the workers.
Wait I ‘m confused I thought the plan was to stay in countryside, and keep out of cities, and now I’m hearing we will sip tea in Kabul. What did I miss? I say Give 80,000 and let the military fight the war. With Barry always micro-managing everything I think we have a serious problem. God Help US!!!

Additional Note on above-
General Stanley McChrystal and our troops will do the best even if Barry dithers, they will win the battles. Remember the War on Terror will most likely not be won in our life time.

Ed Laskie on November 9, 2009 at 8:13 AM

This morning, McClatchy reports on an apparent trial balloon coming from the White House that Obama will split the difference between McChrystal’s medium- and high-risk options for troop support of a counterinsurgency strategy — but still won’t make a decision until after Obama takes a tour of Asia later this month:

Why am I the only one outraged by this statement? You resource a strategy. YOU DO NOT “SPLIT THE DIFFERENCE” ON THE NUMBER OF TROOPS TO ENGAGE!

What war on terror? This President and the whore in charge of DHS have declared there is no such thing as a GWOT.

highhopes on November 9, 2009 at 8:24 AM

These troop figures were arrived at after careful deliberations with Al Qaeda and the Taliban. The training of jihadi and suicide bombers is an ongoing process and the Obama administration doesn’t want to cause this education program to fail.
This is all part of the Palestinian Assistance Package signed into law earlier this year at the White House.

flyoverboy on November 9, 2009 at 9:42 AM

In my long life I have always followed politics and voted for who I thought was the best for our country(remember Perot) I have never been actively engaged but this time I feel I have no choice, I can’t just sit and watch these old hippies/beatnicks destroy this great country. I will stand by her as long as I can. God Bless America
