NFL week 9 open thread
posted at 11:00 am on November 8, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
The Pittsburgh Steelers return from their week off to meet the Denver Broncos in the Mile High City. Denver comes off its first loss of the season, a 30-7 drubbing at the hands of Baltimore in which their defense got blasted for the first time all season. They’ll be looking for some revenge at home, but I think the Steelers can beat them on both sides of the ball. The Steelers’ defense has improved the last couple of games, and their offense has more potential. Plus, the Steelers are hard to beat on Monday nights, even on the road. I’ll pick Pittsburgh in a good game, 23-20.
Last week I went 3-3, my first non-winning week, and my record is now 30-11. Normally I’d pick the Vikings game, but Brett Favre and the purple gang have the week off. I’ll put my record on the line with these picks instead:
- Dallas at Philadelphia – All right, Philly proved something last week — they can look invincible at times, even if they did lose to the Raiders a couple of weeks ago. Dallas is also an inconsistent team, and probably more so than the Eagles, who have the home-field advantage. It should be a good game between two rivals, but I’ll pick the Eagles in a shoot-out, 35-27.
- Baltimore at Cincinnati – Baltimore is usually overrated, and the Bengals usually underrated. Still, both are coming off blowouts of good teams, and the Bengals are at home. I hate to do it, but I’ll take the Bengals, 17-10.
- Arizona at Chicago – Two underperforming teams meet, with Chicago having home-field advantage. I think Chicago gets the best of the Cardinals, 21-10.
- San Diego at New York Giants – The Giants have lost three games in a row, and I’ve picked them to win every single time. They’re too good to lose four in a row, which is usually the kind of logic that gets me in trouble in Vegas (and with Republicans). I’ll pick them to beat the inconsistent Bolts, 27-17.
- Houston at Indianapolis – A year ago, this would have been a walkover. In 2009, the Houston Texans are 5-3 and trail the Colts in the AFC South in second place. The Colts have struggled a bit while maintaining their unbeaten record, and their schedule gets tougher in the next two weeks. Safety Bob Sanders has been lost for the season, further weakening a defense that has been decimated by injury already. I’ll still pick the Colts, but don’t be surprised if this becomes the upset of the week. If this was in Houston, I wouldn’t go with Peyton Manning and 24-20 Colts, but that’s my pick for today.

Blowback

The Stillers might have a hard time without Timmons and Clark on the defensive side, I have to say.

Well looks like you have finally come around on the birds, though I think they’ll beat Dallas by at least ten.
This has been a strange season but its about time for some teams to reverse course and achieve some equilibrium, in past years it usually happened in four game swings. That being said Bengals lose to Ravens and handily, 24-10. I think the Bengals are overrated and the Ravens are just about where they should be. They are a good team, have a good quarterback, good coach, and good defense. They are much better than they’re record.
I think Chicago wins today, but since I have not accurately picked a Bears game in at least four years, so that means Arizona will end up winning. Not even bothering to pick a score.
Giants/Bolts- West coast team traveling east? Last time the Giants last to the Cards, before that they blew out Oakland. Lightning doesn’t strike twice, Giants come back from last weeks expected loss to a much better team.
Indy will not lose to Houston. The recorded crowd noise will be blasting from the speakers in Indy today.

I predict:
3 games decided by a referee’s call…and listening to the incessant whining of the loser, even after the replay shows ref was correct.
6 quarterbacks not living up to the hype, hype that no one on earth could live up to.
147 cliches from the men in the booth.
34 instances of replaying and the analysts saying (after the fact), “He should have never thrown into that coverage”.
5 statements of “He has to turn this team around, or he may be looking for a new job”.
Too many references to the Yankees.
8 instances of a black player being over rated.
8 instances of a white player being over rated.
No Jewish player will be over rated.
…and the number one prediction…..
The first hour of tomorrow morning nothing will get accomplished at work…

Bear down, Chicago Bears, make every play clear the way to victory;
Bear down, Chicago Bears, put up a fight with a might so fearlessly.
We’ll never forget the way you thrilled the nation with your T-formation.
Bear down, Chicago Bears, and let them know why you’re wearing the crown.

Was just listening to some of the local Boston sports critters on the wireless-they’re saying that if New Orleans can get by New England later this month, they could go 16-0.
Of course New Orleans has only played one game in their own division all season (Monday night) and they always have trouble with Carolina, today’s opponent. Combined with the short week, they could be upset.
As for the Patriots, should be interesting to see how much Miami uses the Wildcat this week.
Del Dolemonte on November 8, 2009 at 12:21 PM
I hope we don’t have a repeat of the Romo Romance of the Year.

This is going to be an awesome day of football, so many good matchups and rivalries today.
In the listed picks I’ll take Dallas (damn that’s gonna be a bloodbath), Baltimore, Arizona, San Diego (season on the line for both teams imo), Indianapolis.
I also pick New England over Miami (they’ll spank that Wildcat) and then next week the Pats will hand the Colts their first loss. Muwahahahah.

Jerome Horwitz on November 8, 2009 at 12:56 PM
Wild start to the game here in New England…Miami won the toss and deferred to the second half. New England started a drive, and Brady was intercepted. The Dolphins were driving at the New England 30 but apparently lost the ball which New England ran in for a TD. Miami appealed and won the call, so Miami retains possession, at the New England 39.
Del Dolemonte on November 8, 2009 at 1:14 PM
Colts score!
ladyingray on November 8, 2009 at 1:21 PM
New England held Miami to a long 54 yard field goal, then marched straight down the field for a TD on their next possession. 7-3 N.E.
Del Dolemonte on November 8, 2009 at 1:25 PM
Like I mentioned in last weeks’ thread, you can’t judge how good Oregon is by how they play at home, they are a completely different team at home versus away. I never bet on them unless they are at home.
LevStrauss on November 8, 2009 at 1:25 PM
Wow Bengals taking it to B-More
CWforFreedom on November 8, 2009 at 1:48 PM
Pats are gonna spank the fishes. simple stats. Pats have a huge record at home. too bad it’s not snowing, or else it would be another blowout like always when the flakes come down. I know there are those here who hate the Pats, but you gotta give it to ‘em. I’ve spent 30 yrs as a fan, back when we were 1-15. Good to see a few great years, hopefully more to come. I just hope that the new blood on both OFF/DEF are up to the task. Man I miss Bruschi.

Defensive battle so far-N.E. managed a field goal but hasn’t done much else on offense. 10-3 N.E. with 8 minutes left in the half.

Miami scored a TD on a Ricky Williams run, and New England answered right back but only with a field goal…2 minute warning, 13-10 N.E.
Del Dolemonte on November 8, 2009 at 2:30 PM
New England gets bogged down in the red zone again-Miami’s defenders have been flying to the ball. N.E. kicks a field goal as time runs out, 16-10 N.E.
Del Dolemonte on November 8, 2009 at 2:39 PM
Ed, the Colts Bob Sanders hasn’t really played all year, maybe one game, so how does losing him to IR further weaken the team? All it does is free up a slot for someone who can actually play. The dude is great when he’s healthy, but that’s been rare in recent years.
Log on November 8, 2009 at 2:55 PM
Second half…Miami uses The Wildcat and Ronnie Brown throws a TD. What a drive by Miami, who now lead 17-16.
Del Dolemonte on November 8, 2009 at 3:05 PM
71 yard pass play to Randy Moss for a TD-what a stiff-arm!
N.E. then gets the 2 point conversion (Brady to Moss yet again). Now N.E. 24, Miami 17.

However, it was a very costly game for the Bengals.

ladyingray on November 8, 2009 at 4:53 PM
Chicago sucked and Tampa Bay beat Green Bay and Carolina is beating New Orleans? At the bar we go to in Dallas to watch the Bears, there are fewer and fewer Chicago fans showing up each week. Not surprising, given how they played today and against Cinci.
I’m still hoping NO pulls this off and the Cowgirls beat Phili. I wouldn’t put money on the Dallas game, though.
Jimbo3 on November 8, 2009 at 4:54 PM
New Orleans down 17-6 to Carolina at the half. Can they come back they same way they blew out Miami in the second half a couple of weeks ago?
Del Dolemonte on November 8, 2009 at 5:34 PM
Saints come roaring back to start the second half-4 plays = 7 points. Now 17-13 Carolina with almost the entire second half to go.
Nice touch at halftime, longtime Saints kicker Morten Andersen was inducted into the Saints Hall of Fame.
Longtime Saints radio guy Jim Henderson used to have a great line whenever Morten made a crucial field goal-”The Great Dane has lifted his leg!”
Del Dolemonte on November 8, 2009 at 5:48 PM
All right, Cardinals!!!! Unbeaten on the road this year! Maybe it is time to wear the away jerseys even at home.
I’m definitely not a Bronco fan, but the Steelers will probably lose in Denver. The elevation is a killer. I grew up in Colorado. The elevation takes a toll on “low landers”. Even when I go back now I notice the elevation because I’m now accustomed to having oxygen to breath!
