Report: Hasan attended same radical mosque as 9/11 hijackers; Update: “He was a typical fundamentalist Muslim”

posted at 6:35 pm on November 7, 2009 by Allahpundit

And so a personnel file already teeming with red flags gets another giant one. If you’re wondering how a British newspaper managed to track down this information when the U.S. military apparently couldn’t, you’re not alone. There’s no question now that we need congressional hearings into how the army missed the warning signs on Hasan, especially given the suspicions as to why they might have looked the other way. Chop chop, Messrs. Boehner and Cantor.

Hasan, the sole suspect in the massacre of 13 fellow US soldiers in Texas, attended the controversial Dar al-Hijrah mosque in Great Falls, Virginia, in 2001 at the same time as two of the September 11 terrorists, The Sunday Telegraph has learnt. His mother’s funeral was held there in May that year.

The preacher at the time was Anwar al-Awlaki, an American-born Yemeni scholar who was banned from addressing a meeting in London by video link in August because he is accused of supporting attacks on British troops and backing terrorist organisations.

Hasan’s eyes “lit up” when he mentioned his deep respect for al-Awlaki’s teachings, according to a fellow Muslim officer at the Fort Hood base in Texas, the scene of Thursday’s horrific shooting spree.

Awlaki turned up in the 9/11 Commission report as someone whose connection to the hijackers might have been more than incidental. WaPo followed up last year and found that U.S. intelligence suspects him of having worked with Al Qaeda in the Gulf after leaving Virginia in 2002. Quote from a U.S. counterterrorism official: “There is good reason to believe Anwar Aulaqi has been involved in very serious terrorist activities since leaving the United States, including plotting attacks against America and our allies.”

More from the Telegraph piece via another Muslim soldier known as Richard, who was friends with Hasan and who talked about him to a mutual acquaintance, Kamran Pasha:

Richard had previously argued with Hasan when he said that he felt the “war on terror” was really a war against Islam, expressed anti-Jewish sentiments and defended suicide bombings.

“I asked Richard whether he believed that Hasan was motivated by religious radicalism in his murderous actions,” Mr Pasha said.

“Richard, with great sadness, said that he believed this was true. He also believed that psychological factors from Hasan’s job as an army psychiatrist added to his pathos. The news that he would be deployed overseas, to a war that he rejected, may have pushed him over the edge.

The Telegraph’s got a whole package on Hasan tonight, which I recommend. This piece — which includes details of a mysterious man seen with him for the first time just last week — is also worth reading, and provides the first hard details I’ve come across about him handing out Korans to the neighbors the night before the murders. Exit quotation from the hero of Fort Hood, uttered as her very first words after regaining consciousness: “Did anybody die?”

Update: Asra Nomani interviewed the congregants at the mosque he attended while living in Maryland. Quote: “He was a typical fundamentalist Muslim.”

But a closer look behind the doors of the mosque and inside the conversations between the engineer and the doctor reveal a more complex picture of a young first-generation American Muslim man living a life of dissonance between his identity as an American and his ideology as a Muslim who had accepted a literal, rigid interpretation of Islam, akin to the puritanical Wahhabi and Salafi interpretations of Islam that define the theology of militancy inside the Muslim world today, according to community members who knew Hasan.

“So many time I talked with him,” said Akhter, a community leader who is sort of like a mosque gadfly, challenging congregants to reject literal, rigid interpretations of Islam. “I was trying to modernize him. I tried my best. He used to hate America as a whole. He was more anti-American than American.”

Despite all the conversations, Akther said, “I couldn’t get through to him. He was a typical fundamentalist Muslim.”

Follow the link for details of Akhter’s exchange with Hasan about what “jihad” really means.

PTSD = Post traumatic stress disorder. What “taumatic incident” did Major Hasan experience to get ptsd from?

Even more troubling is that our own FBI does not think this is a terrorist event. Does anyone else think that the FBI needs a complete top to bottom overhaul?
Does anyone else think we need our congress and President to reenforce that the people who are at war with us are radical jihadists, and that we need to re-commit the U.S. government to rooting them out of all of our institutions?

bomb Mecca and Damascus as a warning and the apes may thi k they might lose unfortunately they win because we refuse to let their intent cost them

instead we ferry them here and pollute Europe there, they win u til we make them lose

maybe the Dutch might have the nuts to line ten thousand of them up against a wall and execute them because that’s what it will take

I don’t care if amillion of those apes die innocent or guilty if it saves one of our pets

I have just received an email forward, showing that Hasan was on President Obama’s HomeLand Security Transition team. I’m wondering whose idea that was?

FoxyLady on November 7, 2009 at 9:21 PM

Akhter argued, “Jihad means an inner struggle, fighting against corruption and injustice.”

The young doctor responded. “That’s not a correct interpretation. Jihad means holy war. When your religion isn’t safe, you have to fight for it. If someone attacks you, you must fight them. That is jihad. You can kill someone who is harming you.”

Gee… I guess I was… wrong?

LibTired on November 7, 2009 at 9:22 PM

The only traumatic stress that Major Hasan was under, was that his religion was ordering to kill infidels.

I proudly hate any belief system that wants to destroy human freedom.

Islam is a cancerous belief system. It has always been a force for oppression.

It’s OK to oppose Nazism. It’s OK to oppose Communism. It’s OK to oppose Islamism.

Hitler is alive and well and living in the Islamic Nation.

they are territorially am itious while we are neutral at best though we cede our rights( footbaths. Islamlbanks, taxi drivers who won’t take booze or disableds dogs

they have to be hurt and a few thousand deaths of their own don’t register a tick

a hundred thousand or a million while losing an oil bearing country would register

just calling it like I see it

and I will reiterate, politicians who sign stupid protections for these monkeys better hope I don’t lose someone important because of such law

And dear, solicitous Geraldo Rivera on CNN was following the Lamestream Media talking point about all those normal, decent, fully-Americanized Muslims who have to worry about a “backlash”.

Again, you media-whores: You’re simpering and whimpering and wringing your hands about a not-very-likely “maybe” while TOTALLY IGNORING the REAL CARNAGE done to REAL AMERICAN SOLDIERS –here on American soil– by an American-born soldier who identified more with his “Muslim culture” than with the American principles he took an oath to uphold as an Army officer.

I cannot think of an evil word strong enough to convey my disgust at those in the press who are more concerned about “Muslims’ fears of possible backlash” (I understand CAIR may have received as many as ONE hostile phone call!! The horror!!) than they are about the families of those MURDERED by a Muslim for the greater glory of bloodthirsty Allah.

My Phyc Prof. told my class to never go to a psychiatrist. If you need help see a phycologist. All the psychiatric students he met in medical school were trying to figure out what was wrong with themselves.
My company did a lot of work for a mid east embassy and I had a lengthy conversation after 9/11 with some off them. The gist was: We like you, however you are an infidel and if a conflict arises or your country were to insult Islam you would have to die.

There’s no question now that we need congressional hearings….

It’s not clear that the Americans can rely on their “federal” government to sustain an interest in the muslims or the mosque in one’s own neighborhood. What are the obstacles to state, city, and private action to remove dangerous muslims? Can those obstacles be curtailed or avoided? I’m not advocating any particular action; however, I’m proposing the most broadminded consideration of the problem of dangerous muslims and the higher problem of the obstacles to your removal of them. The Americans have not always been as helpless as you seem to be now; nor do I know that you must always remain so helpless.

Ace of Spades summed this current situation up perfectly:

After every terrorist attack people lament that no one “connected the dots”. Well, “connecting the dots” is irrelevant if you are unwilling to ever step back and look at the picture that they draw.

If Hasan had used a bomb instead of guns,I don’t think even liberals would be whining about how this is not a terrorist attack.

Bottom line is that Hasan was a muslim with radical views that included praising suicide bombings and killing American Soldiers. His anti-war/anti-American views have been made clear by his own words which also included yelling “allah akbar” before starting his shooting rampage.

This was a terrorist attack on American soil by a radical muslim….period.

Baxter Greene on November 8, 2009 at 2:26 AM

Asri Q Nomani did a perfect job framing the problem. More Muslim’s need to speak out against the Horrorists.
I waited long enough to make a judgment on this, Major Insane was a Islamic Horrorist. I cannot believe his peers didn’t detect this. Ummah, or what we know as not squealing on a brother, is a key issue, the Muslims should handle this them selfs then. These Horrorist have no problem killing Muslims, so why not turn them in, or take them out?

Ed Laskie on November 8, 2009 at 2:16 AM

You bring up a good point.

If the moderates aren’t willing to even tell us who the extremists might be, then are they really moderate? At what point do you cross the line from innocent bystander to unthinking collaborator or unwitting accomplice? Shouldn’t someone have told someone else ‘hey… umm… I think this guy’s beyond reason and could go over the deep end’?

How this man became an officer without such review is beyond me. How he stayed an officer is beyond me.

Chaz706 on November 8, 2009 at 2:27 AM

Another point I wanted to bring up:

The Obama administration wants to do everything it can to avoid the fact that this was the first attack on US Soil by Muslim Terrorists since 9/11 and that it happened on his watch while DHS was labeling veterans and conservative protesters as potential enemies of the state.

Correct, and the SRM runs cover for the administration.

All Christians shouldn’t be held responsible for Scott Roeder’s religiously inspired murder; neither should all Muslims be held responsible for Hasan’s cowardly act of terrorism. In America, at least, the Islamic extremists really are a tiny minority. We can deal with that minority without marginalizing the millions of American Muslims who didn’t commit mass murder.

There’s nothing to “get.” Some people are just homicidal lunatics. They can’t control their rage, so their rage controls them. Radical Islam is a popular choice for such people, but that only reflects poorly on radical Islam. The irony here is that, per the Daily Beast story, it was Muslims who did the most to try and reach Hasan before he lost it, yet it’s Muslims who are getting the most blame for Hasan’s actions.

While Obama’s Homeland Security goes after the super dangerous Americans protesting Government take over of Health care and Obama tells the country how dangerous Fox News and Rush Limbaugh are, we have this going on in our backyard:

(via mypetjawa)

NY Muslims: I Love Osama bin Laden & I’m Friends with Terrorists

http://mypetjawa.mu.nu/archives/199488.php

It looks like Joseph “Yousef al-Khattab” Cohen and Younis “Yes-I-do-A-to-M-for Joey” Abdullah Mohammed have finally gotten their wish and are fast becoming the Anjem Choudary and Trevor “Abu Izzadeen” Brooks of the US. Last night Younis was on AC360 and CNN has this report of their activities:

Protected by the Constitution of the country they detest, radical Muslim converts like Yousef al-Khattab and Younes Abdullah Mohammed preach that the killing of U.S. troops overseas is justified. In their thinking, so were the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States — and so are attacks on almost any American….

Al-Khattab and Mohammed consider al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden their model.

“I love him like I can’t begin to tell you, because he doesn’t seem to have done anything wrong from the sharia,” al-Khattab said, referring to Islamic law. “If you’re asking me if I love him as a Muslim, I love him more than I love myself.”

But it gets better as Joey now is admitting publicly what we’ve all known privately for some time: that he’s friends with terrorists:

Neil Bryant Vinas, a young New Yorker who has pleaded guilty to plotting to attack trains on the Long Island Rail Road, met with al-Khattab. Al-Khattab said Vinas and “some brothers” traveled to Atlantic City, New Jersey, and had dinner with him. Al-Khattab said they considered him something of a hero because he left Israel and converted to Islam.

Al-Khattab also claims friendships with Tarek Mehanna, now under indictment in Boston, Massachusetts, on charges of conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists, and Daniel Maldonado, who pleaded guilty before a federal judge in Texas to receiving military training from Islamic militants in Somalia.

Nothing to see here though.
It’s the “teabaggers” and people who watch “FOX news” that we need to watch out for.

But as Chris Matthews brilliantly lets us know, we may have no idea if this hate is based on their religion.

How long before liberals are selling shirts of Hasan right next to their CHE shirts:

NY Muslim: “Get Well Soon Major Nidal We Love You”

http://mypetjawa.mu.nu/archives/199484.php

New York’s own Joseph “Yousef al-Khattab” Cohen, who’s buddy wished my wife a slow painful death today, couldn’t help but praise the Muslim terrorist who murdered 12 Americans today:

Major Nidal Hasan M.D.

An officer and a gentleman was injured while partaking in a preemptive* attack.

Get Well Soon Major Nidal

We Love You

It’s just a wonderful thing to see the muslim community taking a stand against the radical elements by praising Osama and thanking Hasan for taking part in his Pre-emptive attack on our Soldiers.

Does anybody know which streets city officials are having to close off in our major cities due to “moderate muslims” taking a stand and protesting against the Jihadist that are killing hundreds of thousands in the name of “Islam”????

So far the only marches and protests I have seen from the “moderate muslims” were to rail against “racial profiling”,”discrimination”,and “islamaphobia”.

Baxter Greene on November 8, 2009 at 3:59 AM

I was around my city today and there are cops providing security to the islamic centers and mosques. WHY?

WHY is no security being provided by any government agency to our American military ,civilian or Christian/Jewish establishments ? You know those places that can be potential locations for massacre by muslims?

macncheez on November 8, 2009 at 4:34 AM

And now I hear on FOX,Hasan is off the ventilator and doing well. ISN’T THAT FRIKKIN SPECIAL!? GRRR

Actually, yeah. Call me a vindictive b*tch, but I get so sick of mass murderers killing themselves before we can get to them. And in THIS particular case, we’re talking about military justice…. and there is no justice like it. I anticipate some pain we will hear about and A LOT of pain that we won’t. I really don’t even care if it makes this guy into a martyr, so long as he sees justice.

Maybe I’m just extra angry and gun-clingy because of the House bill passing tonight, but I’m all about this guy getting what he deserves.

(Disclaimer: I do not think this treatment should be extended to all Muslims, since I know a few excellent and patriotic ones.)

Hasan, I do hope you’re in excellent health when you next face your fellow soldiers. How long your health will last after that, only Allah knows….

Animator Girl on November 8, 2009 at 4:41 AM

Foxnews has been totally taken in by this ” we did not know he was an extremist Islamist line” Shep Smith was totally gigged by this nut’s supposed cousin saying how much of an American Hasan is; then Rina Ninan goes to Ramallah to get the same crap from this guys supposed uncle. Foxnews has been as shamelessly avoiding the Jihadist elephant in the room just as much as the rest of the left wing media. I guess the Whitehouse campaign to get Foxnews to be supportive of the Obama agenda has worked. The worst case is O’Reilly who has been a total shill for the Islamists on this by presenting “the guy was a nut case” theory… as if all Islamist terrorists are not nutcases

Why do I think this incident isn’t the last?

I guess the sheeple are OK with Muslim terrorist events in the U.S. as long as they’re spread out a little and not too many people are murdered.

I guess we ‘ll have to wait for Hasan to get well and sit down for a heart-to-heart with Larry King and Dr Feel to get answers to such questions. Unless Hasan explains his strategy himself, we can’t jump to any conclusions!
Afterall, Hasan is a psychiatrist ! He knows stuff
He is a good terrorist because he didn’t kill himself while doing his job

Oh poor you, the “we may never know what motivated him” narrative is no longer operative so you switch to this one.

Tell you what if christian Bible and other mainstream christian sources mandated warfare against unbelievers, contained verses like “unbelievers are the worst of animals” etc and as a result of this we would have tens of thousands of christians who would behave as maniacs 24/7 while pointing to this sources as their inspiration, then any single christian SHOULD be held responsible if he is obstructing real anti-terror efforts because they may reflect badly on his religion.

Because this is what the majority of muslims do. They are much more concerned that no one think all this nastiness has anything to do with their religion than actually preventing terrorism.

It would be like in WW2 germans and non-germans like you advocate we shouldn’t concentrate our war efforts on Germany so that we don’t marginalize whole german community and just bomb the whole europe (or the whole world since we don’t want to marginalize Europe do we?).

Thanks for the comforting helping of pablum. Sounds good, means nothing.
“Typical fundamentalist Muslims” are what we have to worry about. Just because they aren’t extremists in the sense that they aren’t strapping on bombs, it doesn’t mean that they won’t sit quiet when someone else does, or when their imam is preaching about jihad at that mosque down your street.
