Open thread: PelosiCare vote coming tonight; Update: 35 Dems oppose? Update: Stupak amendment passes; Update: Bill passes, 220-215, one GOPer votes yes

Twitter’s hopping with rumors about vote-wrangling and backroom deals so I figured you guys could use a thread to exchange information. Just within the past half hour, Politico’s heard whispers from the Democratic leadership that they’ve reached 218. Debate on Stupak’s amendment to strip abortion funding from the bill is coming up, followed by a vote on that and then — sometime between nine and eleven p.m. — the big vote on PelosiCare itself. If you’re watching this all play out on C-SPAN (either on TV or online), keep your eye on Republicans demanding a promise from Pelosi that if Stupak’s amendment passes, it won’t later be dropped in the conference committee with the Senate. The Democrats have been coy about that thus far.

Updates will appear below as warranted. In the meantime, here’s Paul Ryan trying to rally the troops, apparently to no avail. Exit question via Karl: Should the GOP vote “present” on Stupak’s amendment instead of voting for it? Think strategically.

Update: The office of the GOP whip says 33 Democrats will vote no. 41 is the magic number.

Update: If you’re looking for reasons to hope, remember that Pelosi also thought she had 218 when TARP first came to the House floor for a vote last year. That went down in flames, only to be resuscitated a week later.

Update: Here’s a fun thought: What if the bill passes 218-217 … and Bill Owens casts the deciding vote? Dude.

Update: Locker-room pep talk, Obama style:

In listing their legislation they have passed to this point, the president told them, “You did this without any help from the other side,” complaining Republicans have been “saying ‘no,’ stopping progress, gumming up the works was their preferred strategy.”

“Are we going to stop now, or push forward?” Obama asked.

“Push forward,” a dozen or so Democrats shouted back.

“I’m absolutely confident we’ll get this thing done,” Obama told the group. “And when I’m in the Rose Garden signing a piece of legislation to give health care to all Americans, we’ll look back and say that was our finest moment.”

Update: Cantor says there are 35 Democratic no’s. It’ll be razor thin.

Update: At 10 p.m. ET, the vote on Stupak’s anti-abortion amendment is finally on. Stand by. As I write this, it’s 73/90 against passage.

Update: The vote on the amendment is 236/190 as I write this, which is bad news. Not only is there no guarantee that the amendment will survive the conference committee with the Senate (or a Supreme Court challenge, natch), but this gives pro-life Blue Dogs the cover they need to vote for the final bill. It’s going to pass. Sigh.

Update: A smart minority party would have voted present and made the Dems choke on it. Alas, this is our minority party:

“We believe in the sanctity of life, and the Stupak-Pitts Amendment addresses a moral issue of the utmost concern. It will limit abortion in the United States. Because of this, while we strongly and deeply oppose the underlying bill, we decided to stand with Life and support Stupak-Pitts.

“The danger of this bill passing without critical pro-life language was too great a risk to do otherwise. Indeed, a number of Democrat supporters of Stupak-Pitts had privately indicated to many of our colleagues that all they needed for “cover” was a vote, and they would support final passage even if the amendment failed.

“To be clear, the Stupak-Pitts Amendment’s passage is the right thing to do. We believe you just don’t play politics with life.

“When this bill is conferenced with the Senate, the pro-life majority in the House of Representatives must ensure that this important amendment is in the final legislation. If it does not, this same strong majority must defeat the bill.”

Update: It’s 10:45 ET and it looks like the final vote is coming within the next 15 minutes. I held out hope this morning that we might get a humpbot cameo tonight, but it looks like we’re in for an appearance by the melting bunny of death instead. Heart-ache.

Update: My prediction for the final vote, as of 10:52: 224-211.

Update: It was closer than I thought: 220-215, 39 Dems voting no and a solitary Republican — Joe Cao, who replaced “Dollar Bill” Jefferson in a blue district in Louisiana — voting yes. Take heart, righties: Reid is incompetent, which makes the likelihood of 60 votes in the Senate, especially after a vote this narrow, very slim indeed.

But for now, we grieve.

Rovin: Those dips that you cite from DU earlier do not realize that private insurers will have to raise their premiums to cover the same mandates in Pelosi-Care.

Those dips also do not understand that they will have to pay into Government Care for several years and yet have no coverage until the bill kicks in.

Any bill that covers a “child” on a parent’s insurance until the “child” is 26 has contributed to the dependence and infantilization of our nation.

And once Obama care starts to cut compensation to doctors, the smartest people will bail from medical school and go to other fields of study.

csdeven on November 8, 2009 at 9:23 AM

BINGO!! In the UK the average salary for a doctor is the equivalent of $90K. Who in their right mind will put in all the time and effort, go to medical school to make $90K a year? I sure as hell wouldn’t.

Put yourslef in the position of a college senior with good grades. Option 1: spend another 10 years in school to make $90K a year. Option 2 go to Wall St and make $100K starting salary.

Hmmmmmm….. I wonder what the choice will be.

It’ll pass in a watered-down, limp-wristed form in the Senate, and get charged up in conference. Obama will have his bill. It will be vague, incomprehensible and mostly harmless.

Until the regulators and bureaucrats go to work implementing it. Then we get to see first hand the power of the unelected and unaccountable.

This is what you wanted America. This is your “change”. This is now your “hope”: to be dragged, mind, body and soul, into a cesspool of enervating bureaucratic incompetence and malaise. You won’t get better health care; it will get exponentially worse. You won’t get a better economy; it will slowly grind to an indefinite crawl (”lost decade” anyone?).

But hey, you’ll still have Conan and super funny SNL skits about Sarah Palin anyone that argues against the socialist order, won’t you? And T.V. Plenty of T.V. Enough T.V. to rot your mind and sap your will to do anything about the crumbling world around you.

*sigh*

We’re doomed. [/derb]

I would pay anything to be in the waiting room at the ER when Bleeder or one of his kids has to wait 16 hours to be seen by a non-English speaking “doctor” who graduated from one of the “No Whites Need Apply” medical schools created by the bill.

Like I said, the only silver lining in all this for me is that Democrat voters will be hurt the most.

Are you being deliberately obtuse? I do not give a whit about what ethnic or minority background a health-care provider comes from. What I do object to is the preferential treatment given to said groups.

What has kept these minority groups out of health-care fields in the first place? Was it perchance their weak educational backgounds or poor grades? Are you saying that we should trust our health care to a person from the bottom half of the class?

Some of those other provisions that McCaughey cites have absolutely nothing to do with health care or delivery. They are social service programs…just as was that make-work job that Michelle Obama enjoyed as a political payoff.

onlineanalyst,

There are so many things these “dips” fail to comprehend. Unfortunatly, (or thankfully), I have no access to comment at DU. I guess my point was that (even from their warpped prospective of the bill), many of “them” see this bill as FLAWED LEGISLATION full of unwanted mandates. Even our poor representation of liberal trolls here fail to grasp this understanding.

Monsters. They have no idea what is in this bill and yet they signed off on it. This will go down in history as the quintessential culmination of the government take over of all public education – ignorance, evil and avarice. Infomation is all around us – easier to access than any moment in the history of mankind, and yet here we are at the center of a populace who deliberately choses to live in ignorance in exchange for empty promises that the government will take care of them.

From the foldings of its robe, it brought two children;
wretched, abject, frightful, hideous, miserable. They knelt
down at its feet, and clung upon the outside of its garment.

‘Oh, Man. look here. Look, look, down here.’ exclaimed the Ghost.

They were a boy and a girl. Yellow, meagre, ragged, scowling,
wolfish; but prostrate, too, in their humility. Where
graceful youth should have filled their features out, and
touched them with its freshest tints, a stale and shrivelled
hand, like that of age, had pinched, and twisted them, and
pulled them into shreds. Where angels might have sat
enthroned, devils lurked, and glared out menacing. No
change, no degradation, no perversion of humanity, in any
grade, through all the mysteries of wonderful creation, has
monsters half so horrible and dread.

Scrooge started back, appalled. Having them shown to him
in this way, he tried to say they were fine children, but
the words choked themselves, rather than be parties to a lie
of such enormous magnitude.

‘Spirit. are they yours.’ Scrooge could say no more.

‘They are Man’s,’ said the Spirit, looking down upon
them. ‘And they cling to me, appealing from their fathers.
This boy is Ignorance. This girl is Want. Beware them both,
and all of their degree, but most of all beware this boy,
for on his brow I see that written which is Doom
, unless the
writing be erased.

Oh yes…so brave…so daring… So brave that he waited until AFTER it was already sure it was going to pass before slinking over to the YEA column with his vote. *snickers* That was anything but brave. It looked to me more like trying to go where the wind blows. But if he thinks that the American people will stand for it, he will sorely learn how wrong that is. When all respectable polls show a majority are AGAINST the legislation, it becomes political suicide to go against that majority in such an open, public way.

I’ve already written my 2 Senators (Burr and Hagan). Burr – I asked him to do whatever he can to stop ObamaCare passing in the Senate. Hagan – I told her I’d be watching and that 2014 isn’t as far away as it sounds, and that she won’t have any national coattails to ride in that election.

Also dropped a line to my Congressman (Kissell) thanking him for voting NO last night. He’s now 2 for 2 – NO on cap-and-tax and PelosiCare.

Is it worth my time to “adopt” another Senator and call/write to him or her? Snowe? Collins?

Simply Bled-out:

Your strawman arguement re minorities is flawed.

At assorted times in our lives, my family and I have been treated by minority doctors. They were competent to excellent.

What is objectionable in the subsections of the PelosiScare bill is the provisions for preference and quotas for minorities. The insistence on Bennetton health providers does not necessarily assure quality health providers.

What’s next? Do we have to include a certain quota of assorted handicapped health-care providers…just to be fair?

What exactly is it that is keeping the young minorities from seeking health-care jobs? Are math and science classes too demanding?

Bleeds Blue, I’d really like to know why you think I should have to change my health coverage, that was part of a long term career incentive given to me by the military, in order to benefit you. I worked for 33 years and the current plan for retirement is to buy into a civilian version of what I have now. Excellent care under TriCare and Delta Dental for a fraction of the cost of this plan. Why does the majority of Americans have to suffer for a small minority.

God, it makes me miss Welfare. There, we could just let the government soak us in taxes and give the money away. But at least it didn’t require me to deprive one, what one could afford after they’d been raped on their taxes.

I have planned my life and my career for retirement. If you didn’t, bad on ya.

To make a WWII analogy: Congress has now authorized the immediate building of 10,000 Spruce Gooses to bomb Germany and demolish the Nazis. Elitist fantasies that sound great, but lack underlying engineering skill, have many modes of failure.

The inability of the CiC to protect American citizens from terrorist attacks on protected military bases sure speaks volumes. His and Bush’s inept administrations have rendered the fabric of this nation ragged.

We will see more. Compiled with rampant unemployment, the polling doesnt lie. America is waking up after spending the night with Obama suffering a killer hangover. If you think the protests during Bush’s administration were bad, just wait and see what 2010 and 2012 brings.

You all talk as if the consequences were insignificant.

My plan that I served 33 years to rate, through TriCare and Delta Dental would have cost combined, 4200 a year for premium coverage. This will cost me based on the last read, 17,200 a year. 13,000 dollars more.

I worked for the plan I wanted. I stayed in the military even after the retiree plan changed to a payer system with TC and DD because they were damn good deals. The government made a promise and this breaks that promise.

You’re both idiots, the country won’t unravel, at least not quickly. However, since every part of our lives relates to healthcare we idiot congressmen have voted for invasive government control of nearly every aspect of our lives. The country won’t collapse, but her citizens will slowly lose their liberties.

Was TARP bad? YES, I doubt you’ll find a conservative who’ll say otherwise. However…

1. Bush did not set out to “remake” America
2. Bush is no longer President and has no power
3. Bush spent money very poorly and was hustled by left-leaning advisers into some bad decisions, but the One and his congress are working hard to ensure that we will now work for the government
4. Bush dramatically increased our deficit, and this is bad, but Obama
quadrupled down on that increase.
5. Bamster has been in charge for nearly a year with a fully compliant Congress and Court, for that reason alone the “Bush’s fault” excuse holds no water.

I would agree – whether incremental or all at once, this kind of tyranny cannot stand.

People need to start thinking creatively about ways of stopping this.

Consider that we have an advantage of the perspective of history – we’ve all seen this movie before and know what they will do.

Knowing that gives us a great advantage that people facing the dark storm of Statism in the past didn’t have.

So the question becomes, what do we do with that knowledge?

Watch unemployment start shooting up and/or no rehiring. I read somewhere on a link that they are going to add 800,000 to the unemployment rolls in Feb. to correct for their over adjustment in the BLS birth/death model for businesses. That means that U3 unemployment is about 10.8% right now before the over adjustments they did reducing the workforce participation percentages.

The spoiled baby boomer hippies (libs) are going to be some of the first to receive this “care” as they age. Those of us that are slightly younger get to watch as they drool and mess their pants in public because they didn’t get the drug or device to prevent such embarassment.

Then, their ultra-cool, educated and enlightened persona will be all gone. And, I will be the first to point and laugh.

13Girl on November 8, 2009 at 8:36 AM

Yes that generation will be the first to suffer. But that would include anyone born between 1946-1964, you know those baby boomers/hippies! Not all of us were a)hippies or b)maintained that “groovy, turned on and tuned out” attitude.

As you’re laughing young lady, I pray that it’s not your parents or grandparents that are suffering because of rationing and the fact that their value is no longer cost effective. I pray that the day you become part of the elderly demographic that you don’t have to suffer the indignity of no care, reduced care and reduced value.

Part of the demographics of those who voted in this exemplary hope-n-change are the 66% of 18-29 year olds who voted, many first time voters. You know those who have been pampered and spoiled by their hippie era parents?

Take a look at the celebrity mouthpieces who are extolling the virtues of the liberal mindset, unless they’re over 45 they don’t belong to my generation.

If this nightmare does indeed become reality, know that one day the young people won’t be laughing at you as you dribble and wheeze, because that’s all they will have known and they will no longer care.

laugh away child, laugh away!

In the words of the late Jim Morrison: Whoever controls the media, controls the mind. remember that

and in the words of the late, great Thomas Jefferson: Those who desire to give up Freedom in order to gain Security, will not have, nor do they deserve, either one.

Chainsaw56 on November 8, 2009 at 11:53 AM

If you take the reduction of work force participation into account U3 is probably over 11% already if an apples to apples comparison is made with the Bush era.

This will be a heavy blow to those seeking a job and really willing to work. Business owners and managers will be reluctant to hire given the new higher levels of taxataion and the reduction in demand as the bureaucracy and medical providers absorb more of GDP.

ernesto on November 8, 2009 at 11:08 AM

Ernie,

America has always been a unique country. It was built on the principle of individual liberty and freedom. Government was there as a necessary evil and severely limited.

Forcing people to buy a product with the threat of jail time as punishment, goes against everything this country stands/stood for. It’s one thing to raise taxes. It’s one thing to increase spending. That’s just a level of taxation that ebbs and flows.

It’s a whole other when the government starts dictating to people what they MUST purchase. If you can’t see why this is the death knell of America, you’re either stupid or not paying attention.

Chainsaw56 on November 8, 2009 at 11:45 AM

a> We need to get organized. The socialists are out fundraising and out maneuvering us. We need our own conservative voices like “Moveon.org”, we need more conservative equivalents like “organize for America” to get the messasge out. We’ve already got some good foundations here (Fox news, HotAir, Rush, etc) but we need to coordinate the message as well as Rahm’s doing with the DNC.
b> We need political leadership capable of LEADING. McCain and the neocons still seem to have control of the party and that has to stop. We need tactical leadership now more than ever before but the GOP seems to be content to play political games that are good for the leaders of the GOP rather than promote their ideology.
c> We need to take back education and start getting conservative ideologies back into the schools. We can start with stopping the nanny-stating of the schools and “zero tolerance” policies which turn schools into nothing more than socialist state baby sitters with discovery time rather than centers of education. Self-reliance, self-growth and competition is long a thing of the past in schools… and that’s not unintentional.

I think the point was that the most outspoken proponents of the Bamster are the old hippies who now control the MSM. People like Whoopi, Oprah, Letterman, Stewart, etc. Young people have traditionally voted, much to my chagrin as I am 24 myself, liberal. But they generally do so because of the aforementioned celebutards, along with the multitude of musical and acting “talents” who are constantly barraging us with their political views. And despite the hype turnout for the 2008 election, as I recall hearing, was not significantly greater than usual.
