It’s on: Palin vs Pelosi
posted at 10:35 am on November 7, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
If Nancy Pelosi isn’t taking a day off on her quest to have government run the health care industry, neither will Sarah Palin in her quest to stop ObamaCare. Using her Facebook platform, Palin reminded her followers what the Pelosi plan means for health care, small business, unemployment, and personal choice (via The Corner):
How much will this bill cost us? It’s unclear because the figures coming out of Washington keep changing – and always in the direction of costing more, not less. The latest numbers show it will cost more than a trillion dollars over the decade, but when has a government program ever come in on or under budget?
How will we pay for it? Taxes, of course – and not just on the “rich” (you know, the people who spur the economy by buying goods and running companies that employ people), but also on just about everyone, especially small businesses – the job-creating engine of our economy. One of the points of health care reform was to help small businesses with the cost, but this bill hurts them – and right at a time when so many Americans are out of work and need the jobs that small businesses produce.
What’s in this bill? The “death panel” provision is in it. Medicare cuts are in it. Coverage of illegal immigrants is in it. And federal funding for abortion is in it. I commend the many Republicans and Blue Dog Democrats who are taking a principled stance to fight this.
Critics will howl over the “death panel” reference, but Pelosi still has the Comparative Effectiveness Panel in the bill. The language establishing it takes up 22 pages of the bill (pages 739-760), and it does include experts on “health economics”. It doesn’t explicitly give government the power to dictate treatments — in fact, it does explicitly say that federal officers cannot dictate them — but findings by this panel will be used as baselines for payment by insurers, including the federal government, when it comes to deciding what options for treatment are available to whom. After all, comparative effectiveness is explicitly a rationing process. If it’s in the bill, it means that Pelosi plans on cost savings through rationing, which is really no surprise at all.
Palin also does well by hammering on the unemployment news from yesterday. This bill will not alleviate health-care costs for smaller businesses, the engine of new job growth. In fact, it will create a larger burden through mandates and new taxes, especially for small business owners who file taxes as individuals rather than corporations. They will have to pay excise taxes to fund ObamaCare, and the mandates will make small business owners think twice before expanding their labor force.
Pelosi proved Palin correct today in retreating before the Blue Dogs howling over abortion. Will the Blue Dogs stop howling after the Stupak amendment vote, or will they represent their constituents who oppose a government-run heath-insurance scheme and the infringement of their personal choices?
Update: I forgot to put this chart into the post from the Republicans on the Joint Committee for Taxation, which Palin linked in her Facebook statement. Click to enlarge (via Power Line):

Let’s say Pelosi and house Dems back away from trying to pass bill today and opt to postpone. Will the bill have been effectively defeated??
Robert_Paulson on November 7, 2009 at 10:53 AM
You mean calling it “unhelpful”? I like my shooting straight.
After the CBO’s estimates, it’s hard to fathom this bill passing, but danged if they don’t keep trying. With all the ‘we have the votes’ and ‘we don’t have the votes [yet]‘ it’s like watching a post player do a dozen headfakes before the shot. I’m starting to think that it’s going to be 3 seconds and the bill kicked past the ’10 elections.
Spirit of 1776 on November 7, 2009 at 10:53 AM
There needs to be a strong effort towards putting a range of costs associated with this bill and what it will mean to each family. I believe the overall debt that Barry has already run up comes in at something like $34,000 per family. It has to be put in terms that simple minded Americans can understand. People can’t connect to costs like “one trillion dollars!”

Ed,
I believe this is in error. IIRC, the bill explicitly gives “the Secretary” the final authority on what insurance plans will and will not cover, based the the recommendations of the panel.
So, while it is correct to say “the panel” does not determine what level/type of healthcare is provided to an individual, the statement stops short of the complete truth, which is the government will be deciding who gets what type of healthcare.
BobMbx on November 7, 2009 at 10:57 AM
There is a great read on C4P about her speech in Wisconsin last night. Best line of the night….Abortion is not Healthcare. http://www.conservatives4palin.com/2009/11/gov-palin-in-wi-dont-let-anyone-tell.html

What I don’t understand even about the GOP is why they didn’t put their aides on analyzing the specific impact so that they could stay on top of the talking points in a way that really means something to people.
I completely agree with Star20. I can understand that bloggers couldn’t do it fast enough. But the GOP had access to the bill, we pay for tons of aides, so what’s up with that?

A ‘no’ vote by a blue dog will be far easier to explain and/or justify to their constituents in 2010 than a ‘yes’, even if they pass the Stupak ammendment. Any one of the four areas Sarah mentioned (5 if you include the ridiculous cost) is reason enough.
Frankly, a ‘yes’ vote for Pelosi-care is a ‘no’ vote in 2010.

I got through in Pelosi’s office. The guy said he had not read the bill and that I should! I said the part I did read said if I opted out I’d pay up to $25k or go to jail. He called that a “small fee.”
The other talking point: the bill will be changed once it reaches the Senate, as in that part of the bill would probably be taken out. Huh? Why is there in the first place?

Sorry, comparative effctiveness is not death panel. It merely means–as the name suggests–to compare two or more treatments on their effectiveness and costs and choose the best one. No, doctors don’t know the best all the time! A lot of new treatments or drugs offer little additional benefit while increasing the costs. And benefiting the physicians. If folks don’t remember, we moved moved from a Fee-for-service to prospective payment system (PPS) where physicians get a fixed payment depending upon case complexity irrespective of the actual costs incurred precisely because we did not want to incentivize excessive care by physicians. And in case of hospitals it happened under Reagan administration.
As fiscal conservatives, we should be approving of steps to cut costs. Insurance companies do it all the time when they refuse to pay for certain treatments and ask patients be discharged even if the physicians may not feel so. Interestingly, it is the liberals who howl then that cost is placed on human lives!

No, they’ll carefully tuck it away until something else big hits then news. Then they’ll pull it out sometime in the middle of the night when nobody is looking and pass it with a voice vote, so there will be no voting records.
This is what Democrats call open, transparent legislative process.
mojojojo on November 7, 2009 at 11:25 AM
I do like that approach, personally. It can be used to develop practices that benefit people.
One of the issues I see is that doctors are sometimes put on pedestals too much in our system. People over-rely upon them.
I would think we’d all benefit from more actual investigation into what really works.
But, in general, I agree with Sarah that the discussion isn’t really over, and there’s no need to rush the vote.
