It’s on: Palin vs Pelosi

If Nancy Pelosi isn’t taking a day off on her quest to have government run the health care industry, neither will Sarah Palin in her quest to stop ObamaCare. Using her Facebook platform, Palin reminded her followers what the Pelosi plan means for health care, small business, unemployment, and personal choice (via The Corner):
How much will this bill cost us? It’s unclear because the figures coming out of Washington keep changing – and always in the direction of costing more, not less. The latest numbers show it will cost more than a trillion dollars over the decade, but when has a government program ever come in on or under budget?
How will we pay for it? Taxes, of course – and not just on the “rich” (you know, the people who spur the economy by buying goods and running companies that employ people), but also on just about everyone, especially small businesses – the job-creating engine of our economy. One of the points of health care reform was to help small businesses with the cost, but this bill hurts them – and right at a time when so many Americans are out of work and need the jobs that small businesses produce.
What’s in this bill? The “death panel” provision is in it. Medicare cuts are in it. Coverage of illegal immigrants is in it. And federal funding for abortion is in it. I commend the many Republicans and Blue Dog Democrats who are taking a principled stance to fight this.
Critics will howl over the “death panel” reference, but Pelosi still has the Comparative Effectiveness Panel in the bill. The language establishing it takes up 22 pages of the bill (pages 739-760), and it does include experts on “health economics”. It doesn’t explicitly give government the power to dictate treatments — in fact, it does explicitly say that federal officers cannot dictate them — but findings by this panel will be used as baselines for payment by insurers, including the federal government, when it comes to deciding what options for treatment are available to whom. After all, comparative effectiveness is explicitly a rationing process. If it’s in the bill, it means that Pelosi plans on cost savings through rationing, which is really no surprise at all.
Palin also does well by hammering on the unemployment news from yesterday. This bill will not alleviate health-care costs for smaller businesses, the engine of new job growth. In fact, it will create a larger burden through mandates and new taxes, especially for small business owners who file taxes as individuals rather than corporations. They will have to pay excise taxes to fund ObamaCare, and the mandates will make small business owners think twice before expanding their labor force.
Pelosi proved Palin correct today in retreating before the Blue Dogs howling over abortion. Will the Blue Dogs stop howling after the Stupak amendment vote, or will they represent their constituents who oppose a government-run heath-insurance scheme and the infringement of their personal choices?
Update: I forgot to put this chart into the post from the Republicans on the Joint Committee for Taxation, which Palin linked in her Facebook statement. Click to enlarge (via Power Line):

I know how you feel. I got a personal? note “From the Desk of Sarah Palin” saying, “I truly appreciate your support. My sincere thanks. Sarah Palin.” I’m not sure she personally signed it, but it is still a keeper. In fact I keep it in my Bible where I’m reminded daily to pray for her and her family.

There are “death panels” operating within government run healthcare programs in the United States already.
http://www.wral.com/golo/blogpost/5755842/
Palin isn’t the one just making things up. Death panels exist here and now, and appearantly accountable to no one but themsevles. Just like in the U.K., Canada, and every other country where beauracrats make medical decsions instead of patients and doctors.

So it’s not a “death panel” then. Aren’t you people the ones always whining about how words have distinct meanings and should be read literally (esp. when it comes to the Constitution). Disgusting rabble rousing from the woman who’s afraid of the press.

“when deciding what options for treatment are available to whom”–Sounds like a death panel to me.
jimmy2shoes on November 7, 2009 at 4:28 PM
Any panel that dictates a course of treatment for a patient, which does not include the patient in the decision and holds the power in which they may ration or deny treatment- is a death panel(comparitive effectiveness panel).

Yes, we believe words have specific meanings.
We’re also intelligent enough to understand that hyperbole, and other forms of thoughtfull expression, can illuminate a larger point.
What seems to upset those on your side of this debate is that the effective use of the phrase “death panels” crystallized a specific objection to this plan; that it will, inevitably, lead to rationing, and give the government an enormous power to affect cost vs. ‘quality of life’ issues.
Don’t start nuthin, won’t be nuthin.

Obama’s Final Exam Quiz:
“Final costs” is to “burial fees” as “the government deciding options for end of life care” is to:
A) “death panels”
B) “death deciding panels”
C) “death prescribing panels”
or:
D) “panels of death“.
That nomenclature will kill ya.

Do not imagine for a moment, Mr. Morrissey, that leadership is a pleasure. On the contrary, it is a deep and heavy responsibility. No one believes more firmly than President Barack Obama and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi that America’s citizens should have freedom and liberty. They would be only too happy to let them have the freedom to do what they want for themselves and their families, but sometimes America’s citizens might be racists, Nazis or political terrorists and might not contribute to the DNC and might not even vote Democrat, even once, in the next election, Mr. Morrissey, and then where would we be?

Geochelone on November 7, 2009 at 7:36 PM
Try to extrapolate beyond the nose on your face. It’s the logical end result to having a panel of bureaucrats charged with maintaining cost effectiveness. Take a look around at what happens in states and countries that already have government-provided health care. Does it happen to some degree already with insurance companies? Of course it does — just not nearly as often as you leftists would like people to believe. And the difference is, if my insurance company tries to deny me treatment I can sue them. If the government denies me treatment? I guess I’ll just have to croak.

Take any number (of Healthcare Plan costs) coming out of Washington, CBO, Heritage, etc., etc., and add at least one more zero before the decimal point. Then you might be within an order of magnitude of the eventual price that you, your children, your grandchildren, great granchildren, ad infinitum will be paying for this POS.
But Oh, I forgot, there won’t be any of those people left because they will have taxed into non-existence or aborted.

When Pelosi said this seat had belonged to Republican’s since the Civil War, I had to check it out because it sounded impossible.
The 23rd District has had 22 Democrat representatives and 19 Republican representatives. Republican’s had it back to 1993. Democrats held it before back that to 1979. Republican back to 1973. Democrats before that back to 1923.
Not exactly what I would call a Republican stronghold.

You have completely missed the point!!! The government has no right to determine what measure to preserve and/or enhance life is “worth it”!!! This is an individual right guaranteed to us by our constitution!!!
In the private sector, we have the right to contract with anyone we want for any kind of care we want. And if the other party does not deliver, we have access to the justice system to correct the situation.
The Pelosi bill/Obamacare will take all of these rights away! You will have NO SAY in what care you can get…and if you don’t like it, there will be no appeal and you CAN’T sue!!!
Obamacare takes away the individual right to
“life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”
and replaces it with the evil
“as much life as the government will allow, and as much liberty and happiness as is convenient for the government to permit”
This is why Obamacare/Pelosi version is unconstitutional and evil.
Participating in arguments about “comparative effectiveness” is a trap: it concedes the (false) premise that it is the government’s right to make these judgements, and thus diverts you from arguing the important points.

Driefromseattle on November 8, 2009 at 2:03 AM
We’ve got to hold on to hope, and we’ve got to fight hard because Congressional action tonight just put America on a path toward an unrecognizable country.
The same government leaders that got us into the mortgage business and the car business are now getting us into the healthcare business.
Despite Americans’ decisive message last Tuesday that they reject the troubling path this country has been taking, Speaker Pelosi has broken her own promises of transparency to ram a health “care” bill through the House of Representatives just before midnight. Why did she push the 2,000 page bill this weekend? Was she perhaps afraid to give her peers and the constituents for whom she works the chance to actually read this monstrous bill carefully, if at all? Was she concerned that Americans might really digest the details of a bill that the Wall Street Journal has called “the worst piece of post-New Deal legislation ever introduced”?
This out-of-control bureaucratic mess will be disastrous for our economy, our small businesses, and our personal liberty. It will slam businesses at a time when we are at double-digit unemployment rates – the highest we’ve seen in a quarter of a century. This massive new bureaucracy will cost us and our children money we don’t have. It will rob Americans of more of our freedom and further hamper the free market.
Make no mistake: we’re on course to have government commandeer one-sixth of our economy. The people who gave us Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac now want to run our health care. Think about that.
All of us who value the sanctity of life are grateful for the success of the pro-life majority in the House this evening in its battle against federal funding of abortion in this bill, but it’s ironic because we were promised that abortion wasn’t covered in the bill to begin with. Our healthy distrust of these government leaders made us look deeper into the bill because unfortunately we knew better than to trust what they were saying. The victory tonight to amend the bill and eliminate that federal funding for abortion was great – because abortion is not health care. Now we can only hope that Rep. Stupak’s amendment will hold in the final bill, though the Democratic leadership has already refused to promise that it won’t be scrapped later.
We had been told there were no “death panels” in the bill either. But look closely at the provision mandating bureaucratic panels that will be calling the shots regarding who will receive government health care.
Look closely at provisions addressing illegal aliens’ health care coverage too.
Those of us who love freedom and believe in open and transparent government can only be dismayed by midnight action on a Saturday. Speaker Pelosi’s promise that Americans would have 72 hours to read the final bill before the vote was just another one of the D.C. establishment’s too-common political ploys. It’s broken promises like this that turn people off to politics and leave them disillusioned about the future of their country.
But despite this late-night maneuvering, many of us were paying close attention tonight. We’ll keep paying close attention. We need to let our legislators in Washington know that they still represent us, and that the majority of Americans are not in favor of the “reform” they are pushing. After all, this is still a country “of the people, by the people, and for the people.” We will make our voices heard. It’s on to the Senate now. Our legislators can listen now, or they can hear us in 2010. It’s their choice.
